Spectroscopic Analysis of Vibronic Relaxation Pathways in Molecular Spin Qubit [Ho(W5O18)2]9-: Sparse Spectra Are Key

Intramolecular bridging strategies to suppress two-phonon Raman spin relaxation in dysprosocenium single-molecule magnets

Dy(III) bis-cyclopentadienyl (Cp) sandwich compounds exhibit extremely strong single-ion magnetic anisotropy which imbues them with magnetic memory effects such as magnetic hysteresis, and has put them at the forefront of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Owing to the great success of design principles focused on maximising the anisotropy barrier, ever higher Ueff values have been reported leading to significant slow down of single-phonon Orbach spin relaxation. However, anisotropy-based SMM design has largely ignored two-phonon Raman spin relaxation, which is still limiting the temperatures at which a memory effect can be observed. In this work, we study the suppression of Raman relaxation through covalent bridging of the Cp ligands by alkyl chains, testing the hypothesis that increasing the rigidity of the ligand framework results in a blue shift of low frequency vibrations in the first coordination sphere of the Dy(III) ion. This reshaping of the vibrational low-energy density of states (DOS) results in lower occupation of pseudo-acoustic phonons available to drive Raman relaxation at low temperatures. We simulate Orbach and Raman spin relaxation in a series of zero-, mono-, di- and tri-bridged [Dy(Cpttt)2]+ analogues fully ab initio, using a quantum mechanics (QM)/molecular mechanics (MM) condensed phase embedding protocol in a periodic solvent matrix as a generic and experimentally testable environment model that can include (pseudo-)acoustic phononic degrees of freedom. We show that this approach can simulate magnetic relaxation dynamics in the condensed phase for the existing non-bridged [Dy(Cpttt)2]+ compound with quantitative experimental accuracy. Subsequently, we find a significant slowing down of Raman relaxation can be achieved for the singly-bridged SMM, while the introduction of further bridges leads to faster relaxation. A key result being that we find the two-phonon Raman rates correlate with the purity of the first-excited Kramers doublet in terms of its mJ = ±13/2 content. Even though the bridging design principle is successful at progressively reshaping the low-energy DOS, the introduction of linker atoms in the equatorial plane successively degrades magnetic anisotropy, suggesting the importance of refined design of the linker chemistry. The accuracy of our results emphasises the value of a generic periodic solvent embedding model, such that it permits the modelling of molecular spin dynamics in the condensed phase without knowledge of a crystal structure. This allows the study of hypothetical molecules or aggregates under real-world conditions, which we expect to have utility beyond the field of molecular magnetism.

Structural and vibrational properties of lanthanide Lindqvist polyoxometalate complexes

Molecular spin qubits have demonstrated immense potential in quantum information science research due to the addressability of electron spins using microwave frequencies, and the scalability and tunability of molecular systems. Exemplary in this regard is the holmium polyoxometalate, [Na9Ho(W5O18)2]·35H2O (HoW10), which features an accessible atomic clock transition at 9.4 GHz; however, the coherence time of this molecule is limited by spin-phonon coupling driven decoherence processes. To limit these decoherence pathways, materials need to be designed to reduce energy overlap between spin and phonon states, and this necessitates developing a better understanding on how structural modifications impact the vibrational landscape for classes of complexes. Herein we conducted a full investigation into the fundamental structural and vibrational properties of the lanthanide Lindqvist polyoxometalate series, [Na9Ln(W5O18)2]·xH2O (Ln = La(III)-Lu(III), except Pm(III)) (LnW10), to assess how structural changes effect vibrational characteristics and to elucidate pathways to improve the coherence properties of HoW10. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results revealed four distinct structural polymorphs in complexes 1-14 wherein first coordination spheres were identical, and differences manifested as changes in lattice packing. Interestingly, the subtle changes in packing exhibited by the four polymorphs were found to impact distortions away from ideal D4d symmetry for each of the LnW10 complexes. Raman and far-infrared (FIR) spectra of complexes 1-14 were collected to identify vibrational modes present in low energy regions and peak fitting assignments were made according to literature precedents. Qualitative and Partial least squares (PLS) analysis show correlations between complex structural parameters with the low energy Raman and FIR vibrational modes of interest. Overall, this investigation shows that the second coordination sphere plays an integral role in modulation of the structural and vibrational characteristics of LnW10 complexes, which makes it a viable route for tuning spin and vibrational manifolds of species within this series.

Unravelling the role of spin-vibrational coupling in designing high-performance pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single ion magnets

At the cutting edge of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) lie lanthanide-based complexes, renowned for their potent magnetic anisotropy. SMMs containing one metal centre are defined as single-ion magnets (SIMs). The performance of SMMs is measured generally via the barrier height for magnetisation reversal (Ueff) and blocking temperature (TB), below which the magnetisation is fully frozen. To enhance the Ueff and TB values in lanthanide-based SMMs, the static crystal field splitting of mJ levels has been effectively adjusted through ligand design, leveraging the oblate/prolate ground state 4f electron density shape. However, the maximum fine-tuning achievable through ligand design, known as the axial limit, has already been reached in this class of compounds. This necessitates new design principles to enhance SMM characteristics to better suit end-user applications. Among other avenues that can be explored to improve SMM characteristics, a deeper understanding of spin-phonon coupling is critical to advancing TB values. However, there are only a handful of examples where this has been deciphered. In this work, using a combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF calculations, we have performed spin-phonon calculations on five classes of pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) SIMs exhibiting TB values in the range of 4.5 K to 36 K ([Dy(bbpen)Br] (1, H2bbpen = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine), [Dy(OCMe3)Br(THF)5][BPh4] (2) [Dy(OSiMe3)Br(THF)5] [BPh4] (3), [Dy(LN5)(Ph3SiO)2](BPh4)·CH2Cl2 (4) and [L2Dy(H2O)5][I]3·L2·H2O (5, L = tBuPO(NHiPr)2)). Unlike the method employed elsewhere for the calculation of spin-phonon coupling, in this work, we have employed a set of criteria and intuitively selected vibrational modes to perform the spin-phonon coupling analysis. The approach provided here not only reduces the computational cost significantly but also suggests chemical intuition to improve the performance of this class of compounds. Our calculations reveal that low-energy vibrational modes govern the magnetisation relaxation in these SIMs. A flexible first coordination sphere found on some of the complexes was found to be responsible for low-energy vibrations that flip the magnetisation, reducing the TB values drastically (complexes 2 and 3). On the other hand, a rigid first coordination sphere and a stiff ligand framework move the spin-vibrational coupling that causes the relaxation to lie beyond the secondary coordination sphere, resulting in an increase in TB values. Our calculations also reveal that not only the atoms in the first coordination sphere but also those in the secondary coordination sphere affect the performance of the SMMs. Learning from this exercise, we have undertaken several in silico models based on these vibrations to improve the TB values. Some of these predictions were correlated with literature precedents, offering confidence in the methodology employed. To this end, our comprehensive investigation, involving twenty-three molecules/models and five sets of geometries for pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single-ion magnets (SIMs), unveils a treasure trove of chemically sound design clues, poised to enhance the TB values in this fascinating molecular realm.

Dipolar Coupling as a Mechanism for Fine Control of Magnetic States in ErCOT-Alkyl Molecular Magnets

The design of molecular magnets has progressed greatly by taking advantage of the ability to impart successive perturbations and control vibronic transitions in 4fn systems through the careful manipulation of the crystal field. Herein, we control the orientation and rigidity of two dinuclear ErCOT-based molecular magnets: the inversion-symmetric bridged [ErCOT(μ-Me)(THF)]2 (2) and the nearly linear Li[(ErCOT)2(μ-Me)3] (3). The conserved anisotropy of the ErCOT synthetic unit facilitates the direction of the arrangement of its magnetic anisotropy for the purposes of generating controlled internal magnetic fields, improving control of the energetics and transition probabilities of the electronic angular momentum states with exchange biasing via dipolar coupling. This control is evidenced through the introduction of a second thermal barrier to relaxation operant at low temperatures that is twice as large in 3 as in 2. This barrier acts to suppress through-barrier relaxation by protecting the ground state from interacting with stray local fields while operating at an energy scale an order of magnitude smaller than the crystal field term. These properties are highlighted when contrasted against the mononuclear structure ErCOT(Bn)(THF)2 (1), in which quantum tunneling of the magnetization processes dominate, as demonstrated by magnetometry and ab initio computational methods. Furthermore, far-infrared magnetospectroscopy measurements reveal that the increased rigidity imparted by successive removal of solvent ligands when adding bridging methyl groups, along with the increased excited state purity, severely limits local spin-vibrational interactions that facilitate magnetic relaxation, manifesting as longer relaxation times in 3 relative to those in 2 as temperature is increased.

Endohedral metallofullerene molecular nanomagnets

Magnetic lanthanide (Ln) metal complexes exhibiting magnetic bistability can behave as molecular nanomagnets, also known as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), suitable for storing magnetic information at the molecular level, thus attracting extensive interest in the quest for high-density information storage and quantum information technologies. Upon encapsulating Ln ion(s) into fullerene cages, endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have been proven as a promising and versatile platform to realize chemically robust SMMs, in which the magnetic properties are able to be readily tailored by altering the configurations of the encapsulated species and the host cages. In this review, we present critical discussions on the molecular structures and magnetic characterizations of EMF-SMMs, with the focus on their peculiar molecular and electronic structures and on the intriguing molecular magnetism arising from such structural uniqueness. In this context, different families of magnetic EMFs are summarized, including mononuclear EMF-SMMs wherein single-ion anisotropy is decisive, dinuclear clusterfullerenes whose magnetism is governed by intramolecular magnetic interaction, and radical-bridged dimetallic EMFs with high-spin ground states that arise from the strong ferromagnetic coupling. We then discuss how molecular assemblies of SMMs can be constructed, in a way that the original SMM behavior is either retained or altered in a controlled manner, thanks to the chemical robustness of EMFs. Finally, on the basis of understanding the structure-magnetic property correlation, we propose design strategies for high-performance EMF-SMMs by engineering ligand fields, electronic structures, magnetic interactions, and molecular vibrations that can couple to the spin states.

Spectroscopic techniques to probe magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling in metal complexes

Magnetism of molecular quantum materials such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been actively studied for potential applications in the new generation of high-density data storage using SMMs and quantum information science. Magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling are two key properties of d- and f-metal complexes. Here, phonons refer to both intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. Direct determination of magnetic anisotropy and experimental studies of spin-phonon coupling are critical to the understanding of molecular magnetism. This article discusses our recent approach in using three complementary techniques, far-IR and Raman magneto-spectroscopies (FIRMS and RaMS, respectively) and inelastic neutron scatterings (INS), to determine magnetic excited states. Spin-phonon couplings are observed in FIRMS and RaMS. DFT phonon calculations give energies and symmetries of phonons as well as calculated INS spectra which help identify magnetic peaks in experimental INS spectra.

Spin-Vibronic Dynamics in Open-Shell Systems beyond the Spin Hamiltonian Formalism

Vibronic coupling has a dramatic influence over a large number of molecular processes, ranging from photochemistry to spin relaxation and electronic transport. The simulation of vibronic coupling with multireference wave function methods has been largely applied to organic compounds, and only early efforts are available for open-shell systems such as transition metal and lanthanide complexes. In this work, we derive a numerical strategy to differentiate the molecular electronic Hamiltonian in the context of multireference ab initio methods and inclusive of spin-orbit coupling effects. We then provide a formulation of open quantum system dynamics able to predict the time evolution of the electron density matrix under the influence of a Markovian phonon bath up to fourth-order perturbation theory. We apply our method to Co(II) and Dy(III) molecular complexes exhibiting long spin relaxation times and successfully validate our strategy against the use of an effective spin Hamiltonian. Our study sheds light on the nature of vibronic coupling, the importance of electronic excited states in spin relaxation, and the need for high-level computational chemistry to quantify it.

Analytical nonadiabatic coupling and state-specific energy gradient for the crystal field Hamiltonian describing lanthanide single-ion magnets

Paramagnetic molecules with a metal ion as an electron spin center are promising building blocks for molecular qubits and high-density memory arrays. However, fast spin relaxation and decoherence in these molecules lead to a rapid loss of magnetization and quantum information. Nonadiabatic coupling (NAC), closely related to spin-vibrational coupling, is the main source of spin relaxation and decoherence in paramagnetic molecules at higher temperatures. Predicting these couplings using numerical differentiation requires a large number of computationally intensive ab initio or crystal field electronic structure calculations. To reduce computational cost and improve accuracy, we derive and implement analytical NAC and state-specific energy gradient for the ab initio parametrized crystal field Hamiltonian describing single-ion molecular magnets. Our implementation requires only a single crystal field calculation. In addition, the accurate NACs and state-specific energy gradients can be used to model spin relaxation using sophisticated nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, which avoids the harmonic approximation for molecular vibrations. To test our implementation, we calculate the NAC values for three lanthanide complexes. The predicted values support the relaxation mechanisms reported in previous studies.

The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

Direct observation of magnetoelastic coupling in a molecular spin qubit: new insights from crystal field neutron scattering data

Single-molecule magnets are promising candidates for data storage and quantum computing applications. A major barrier to their use is rapid magnetic relaxation and quantum decoherence due to thermal vibrations. Here we report a reanalysis of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data of the candidate qubit Na9[Ho(W5O18)2]·35D2O, wherein we demonstrate for the first time that magnetic relaxation times and mechanisms can be directly observed as crystal field (CF) peak broadening in INS spectra of a lanthanoid molecular system. The magnetoelastic coupling between the lower energy CF states and phonons (lattice vibrations) is determined by the simultaneous measurement of CF excitations and the phonon density of states, encoded within the same INS experiment. This directly results in the determination of relaxation coupling pathways that occur in this molecule. Such information is invaluable for the further advancement of SMMs and to date has only been obtained from techniques performed in external magnetic fields. Additionally, we determine a relaxation rate of quantum-tunnelling of magnetisation that is consistent with previously measured EPR spectroscopy data.

Quantum Mimicry With Inorganic Chemistry

Quantum objects, such as atoms, spins, and subatomic particles, have important properties due to their unique physical properties that could be useful for many different applications, ranging from quantum information processing to magnetic resonance imaging. Molecular species also exhibit quantum properties, and these properties are fundamentally tunable by synthetic design, unlike ions isolated in a quadrupolar trap, for example. In this comment, we collect multiple, distinct, scientific efforts into an emergent field that is devoted to designing molecules that mimic the quantum properties of objects like trapped atoms or defects in solids. Mimicry is endemic in inorganic chemistry and featured heavily in the research interests of groups across the world. We describe a new field of using inorganic chemistry to design molecules that mimic the quantum properties (e.g. the lifetime of spin superpositions, or the resonant frequencies thereof) of other quantum objects, "quantum mimicry." In this comment, we describe the philosophical design strategies and recent exciting results from application of these strategies.

Unraveling the Contributions to Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Kramers Single-Molecule Magnets

The study of how spin interacts with lattice vibrations and relaxes to equilibrium provides unique insights into its chemical environment and the relation between electronic structure and molecular composition. Despite its importance for several disciplines, ranging from magnetic resonance to quantum technologies, a convincing interpretation of spin dynamics in crystals of magnetic molecules is still lacking due to the challenging experimental determination of the correct spin relaxation mechanism. We apply ab initio spin dynamics to a series of 12 coordination complexes of Co2+ and Dy3+ ions selected among ∼240 compounds that largely cover the literature on single-molecule magnets and well represent different regimes of spin relaxation. Simulations reveal that the Orbach spin relaxation rate of known compounds mostly depends on the ions' zero-field splitting and little on the details of molecular vibrations. Raman relaxation is instead found to be also significantly affected by the features of low-energy phonons. These results provide a complete understanding of the factors limiting spin lifetime in single-molecule magnets and revisit years of experimental investigations by making it possible to transparently distinguish Orbach and Raman relaxation mechanisms.

Analytic Linear Vibronic Coupling Method for First-Principles Spin-Dynamics Calculations in Single-Molecule Magnets

Accurate modeling of vibronically driven magnetic relaxation from ab initio calculations is of paramount importance to the design of next-generation single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Previous theoretical studies have been relying on numerical differentiation to obtain spin-phonon couplings in the form of derivatives of spin Hamiltonian parameters. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to obtain these derivatives fully analytically by combining the linear vibronic coupling (LVC) approach with analytic complete active space self-consistent field derivatives and nonadiabatic couplings computed at the equilibrium geometry with a single electronic structure calculation. We apply our analytic approach to the computation of Orbach and Raman relaxation rates for a bis-cyclobutadienyl Dy(III) sandwich complex in the frozen-solution phase, where the solution environment is modeled by electrostatic multipole expansions, and benchmark our findings against results obtained using conventional numerical derivatives and a fully electronic description of the whole system. We demonstrate that our LVC approach exhibits high accuracy over a wide range of coupling strengths and enables significant computational savings due to its analytic, "single-shot" nature. Evidently, this offers great potential for advancing the simulation of a wide range of vibronic coupling phenomena in magnetism and spectroscopy, ultimately aiding the design of high-performance SMMs. Considering different environmental representations, we find that a point charge model shows the best agreement with the reference calculation, including the full electronic environment, but note that the main source of discrepancies observed in the magnetic relaxation rates originates from the approximate equilibrium electronic structure computed using the electrostatic environment models rather than from the couplings.

Computational design of magnetic molecules and their environment using quantum chemistry, machine learning and multiscale simulations

Having served as a playground for fundamental studies on the physics of d and f electrons for almost a century, magnetic molecules are now becoming increasingly important for technological applications, such as magnetic resonance, data storage, spintronics and quantum information. All of these applications require the preservation and control of spins in time, an ability hampered by the interaction with the environment, namely with other spins, conduction electrons, molecular vibrations and electromagnetic fields. Thus, the design of a novel magnetic molecule with tailored properties is a formidable task, which does not only concern its electronic structures but also calls for a deep understanding of the interaction among all the degrees of freedom at play. This Review describes how state-of-the-art ab initio computational methods, combined with data-driven approaches to materials modelling, can be integrated into a fully multiscale strategy capable of defining design rules for magnetic molecules.

Toward exact predictions of spin-phonon relaxation times: An ab initio implementation of open quantum systems theory

Spin-phonon coupling is the main driver of spin relaxation and decoherence in solid-state semiconductors at finite temperature. Controlling this interaction is a central problem for many disciplines, ranging from magnetic resonance to quantum technologies. Spin relaxation theories have been developed for almost a century but often use a phenomenological description of phonons and their coupling to spin, resulting in a nonpredictive tool and hindering our detailed understanding of spin dynamics. Here, we combine time-local master equations up to the fourth order with advanced electronic structure methods and perform predictions of spin-phonon relaxation time for a series of solid-state coordination compounds based on both transition metals and lanthanide Kramers ions. The agreement between experiments and simulations demonstrates that an accurate, universal, and fully ab initio implementation of spin relaxation theory is possible, thus paving the way to a systematic study of spin-phonon relaxation in solid-state materials.

Analysis of vibronic coupling in a 4f molecular magnet with FIRMS

Vibronic coupling, the interaction between molecular vibrations and electronic states, is a fundamental effect that profoundly affects chemical processes. In the case of molecular magnetic materials, vibronic, or spin-phonon, coupling leads to magnetic relaxation, which equates to loss of magnetic memory and loss of phase coherence in molecular magnets and qubits, respectively. The study of vibronic coupling is challenging, and most experimental evidence is indirect. Here we employ far-infrared magnetospectroscopy to directly probe vibronic transitions in [Yb(trensal)] (where H₃trensal = 2,2,2-tris(salicylideneimino)trimethylamine). We find intense signals near electronic states, which we show arise due to an "envelope effect" in the vibronic coupling Hamiltonian, which we calculate fully ab initio to simulate the spectra. We subsequently show that vibronic coupling is strongest for vibrational modes that simultaneously distort the first coordination sphere and break the C₃ symmetry of the molecule. With this knowledge, vibrational modes could be identified and engineered to shift their energy towards or away from particular electronic states to alter their impact. Hence, these findings provide new insights towards developing general guidelines for the control of vibronic coupling in molecules.

Effect of an axial coordination environment on quantum tunnelling of magnetization for dysprosium single-ion magnets with theoretical insight

Herein, we report two mononuclear dysprosium complexes [Dy(H₄L){B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂}₂](Cl)·MeOH (1) and [Dy(H₄L){MeOH)₂(NCS)₂}](Cl) (2) [where H₄L = 2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(N-phenylhydrazinecarboxamide)] with different axial coordination environments. The structural analysis revealed that the pentadentate H₄L ligand binds through the equatorial position in both complexes. In complex 1, the axial positions are occupied by bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate [B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂]^-. On the other hand, in complex 2, one axial position is occupied by two NCS^- and one MeOH molecule while another MeOH molecule is coordinated to the other axial position. Magnetic measurements disclose the presence of field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization with an energy barrier of U_eff = 30 K for 1 whereas no such effective barrier was observed in complex 2. Detailed analysis of field and temperature dependence of the relaxation time confirms the major role of Raman, QTM, and direct processes rather than the Orbach process in complex 1. It was observed that [B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂]^- provides higher axial anisotropy which slows down the QTM process (relaxation time for the QTM process is 2.70 × 10^-5 s) in 1 as compared to NCS anions and MeOH molecules in 2 (1.03 × 10^-8 s), and is responsible for the absence of an effective energy barrier in the latter complex as confirmed by ab initio calculations. The calculations also show that the presence of a large bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate ligand in axial positions may result in high-performance Dy-based single-ion magnets.
