Detection and Sorption of Heavy Metal Ions in Aqueous Media by a Fluorescent Zr(IV) Metal-Organic Framework Functionalized with 2-Picolylamine Receptor Groups

Hexavalent Chromium Reduction Mediated by Interfacial Electron Transfer over the Co@NC Nanosheet-Assembled Microflowers

The reductive transformation of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) mediated by formic acid with efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts is a promising strategy for remediating Cr(VI) contamination. Herein, we report the facile construction of uniform Co@NC nanosheet-assembled microflowers for the reduction of Cr(VI). Both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the vital role of the intensive interfacial electronic interaction between Co nanoparticles and the N-doped carbon layer in facilitating the anchoring and dispersion of Co nanoparticles within the carbon framework. The interfacial electron transfer from Co to NC contributes to the interaction with Cr2O72- ions, promoting the subsequent H-transfer reaction. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model has been established for the Cr(VI) reduction catalyzed by the CNCF2 (pyrolyzed at 700 °C), which shows a superior reaction performance. This study provides a facile strategy to delicately design well-assembled heterostructures with rich interfaces and strong interfacial interactions for a series of applications in environmental/thermal catalysis.

Silver Nanoparticle-Functionalized Postsynthetically Modified Thiol MOF UiO-66-NH-SH for Efficient CO2 Fixation

Thiols are essential functional groups imparting unique properties, such as reactivity and selectivity, to many vital enzymes and biomolecules. The integration of electronically soft thiol groups within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) yields elevated reactivity and a pronounced affinity for soft metal ions. However, the scarcity of thiol-based ligands and synthetic challenges hinder the advancement of thiol-based MOFs. To bypass the difficulties of synthesizing thiol MOFs by a direct reaction between thiol-based ligands and corresponding metal salts, postsynthetic modification (PSM) of MOFs is an efficient strategy to introduce thiol functionality. Herein, we have introduced Ag nanoparticles in postsynthetically modified thiol MOFs UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and thioglycolic acid) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and 3-mercaptopropionic acid) to synthesize a series of heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 fixation. Catalysts Cat 1-2 and Cat 3 - 4 were synthesized from UiO-66-NH-SH (1) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2), respectively, by using varying concentrations of silver (AgNO3). Catalyst Ag@UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (Ag = 3.45%; namely Cat 2) shows the highest efficiency for the catalytic conversion of propargylic alcohol and terminal epoxide to the corresponding cyclic carbonates. Finally, a rationalized reaction mechanism is proposed by correlating our results with the current literature. This work presents a viable strategy to utilize the thiol functionality of MOFs (avoiding the complexities associated with synthesizing thiol MOFs directly from thiol ligands) as a platform for introducing catalytically active metal centers and applying them as a heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 fixation reactions.

Recent advances in metal-organic framework (MOF)-based agricultural sensors for metal ions: a review

Metal ions have great significance for agricultural development, food safety, and human health. In turn, there exists an imperative need for the development of novel, sensitive, and reliable sensing techniques for various metal ions. Agricultural sensors for the diagnosis of both agricultural safety and nutritional health can establish quality and safety traceability systems of both agro-products and food to guarantee human health, even life safety. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are utilized widely for the design of diversified sensors due to their distinctive structural characteristics and extraordinary optical and electrical properties. To serve agricultural sensors better, this review is dedicated to providing a brief overview of the synthesis of MOFs, the modification of MOFs, the fabrication of MOF-based film electrodes, the applications of MOF-based agricultural sensors for metal ions, which are centered on electrochemical sensors and optical sensors, and current challenges of MOF-based agricultural sensors. In addition, this review also provides potential future opportunities for the development and practical application of agricultural sensors.

Computational Insights on the Chemical Reactivity of Functionalized and Crosslinked Polyketones to Cu2+ Ion for Wastewater Treatment

Today, the high concentrations of copper found in water resources result in an urgent problem to solve since human health and aquatic ecosystems have been affected. Functionalized crosslinked polyketone resins (XLPK) have demonstrated high performance for the uptake of heavy metals in water solutions. In addition, its green chemical synthesis makes these resins very attractive as sorbents for metal ions contained in wastewater. XLPK are not soluble in aqueous media and do not require any catalyst, solvent, or harsh conditions to carry out the uptake process. In this paper, a series of functionalized XLPK with pending amino-derivatives namely; butylamine (BA), amino 2-propanol (A2P), 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid (HAMC), 6-aminohexanoic acid (PAMBA), and 1,2 diamino propane (DAP) directly attached to the pyrrole backbone of the polymers and crosslinked by di-amine derivatives was investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our computational analysis revealed that dipole-dipole interactions played a crucial role in enhancing the adsorption of Cu2+ ions onto XLPKs. The negatively charged ketone moieties and functional groups within XLPKs were identified as key adsorption sites for the selective binding of Cu2+ ions. Additionally, we found that XLPKs exhibited strong electrostatic interactions primarily through the -NH2 and -C=O groups. Evaluation of the adsorption energies in XLPK-Cu(II) complexes showed that the DAP-Cu(II) complex exhibited the highest stability, attributed to strong Cu(II)-N binding facilitated by the amino moiety (-NH2). The remaining XLPKs displayed binding modes involving oxygen atoms (Cu(II)-O) within the ketone moieties in the polymer backbone. Furthermore, the complexation and thermochemical analysis emphasized the role of the coordinator atom (N or O) and the coordinating environment, in which higher entropic effects involved in the adsorption of Cu2+ ions onto XLPKs describes a lower spontaneity of the adsorption process. The adsorption reactions were favored at lower temperatures and higher pressures. These findings provide valuable insights into the reactivity and adsorption mechanisms of functionalized and crosslinked polyketones for Cu2+ uptake, facilitating the design of high-performance polymeric resins for water treatment applications.

A Cu(II) MOF with laccase-like activity for colorimetric detection of 2,4-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with aqueous stability have a good potential application in the field of mimetic enzymes. However, most of them have poor robustness in aqueous solution due to competitive coordination effects between water molecules and central metal ions. Herein, a copper-based MOF (Cu-SM MOF) was prepared using copper ions and 5-(sulfomethyl) isophthalic acid (5-SMIPA) by a hydrothermal process. Considering the similarity of coordination and morphology with HKUST-1, the aqueous stability and laccase-like activity of the Cu-SM MOF were investigated using HKUST-1 as the reference. The Cu-SM MOF shows superior aqueous stability to HKUST-1 after immersion in buffer solutions, especially under alkaline conditions. Moreover, the Cu-SM MOF possesses higher catalytic activity than HKUST-1 at a high salt concentration, high temperature, etc., because the Cu-SM MOF exhibits lower K_m and higher V_max values than those of laccase and reported mimetic enzymes. The mimetic enzyme behavior of the Cu-SM MOF is demonstrated in the oxidation of phenols, as well as in the detection of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP) and p-nitrophenol with linear ranges of 1-100 μM and 2-250 μM, and limits of detection of 0.53 μM and 1.62 μM, respectively. Owing to the excellent aqueous stability and laccase-like activity of the Cu-SM MOF, it has great application prospects in many fields, such as the determination of phenols and the treatment of industrial wastewater.

Composite Materials Based on a Zr4+ MOF and Aluminosilicates for the Simultaneous Removal of Cationic and Anionic Dyes from Aqueous Media

Environmental pollution has been a reality for many decades, with its contamination intensifying daily due to rapid urbanization and the ever-increasing world population. Dyes, and especially synthetic ones, constitute a category of pollutants that not only affect the quality of water but also exhibit high toxicity toward living organisms. This study was thoroughly planned to explore the removal of two toxic dyes, namely the methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) compounds from contaminated aqueous media. For this purpose, we designed and synthesized two new composite materials based on ammonium-functionalized Zr⁴⁺ MOF (MOR-1 or UiO-66-NH₃⁺) and naturally occurring sorbents, such as bentonite and clinoptilolite. The composite materials displayed exceptional sorption capability toward both MB⁺ and MO^- ions. A key finding of this study was the high efficiency of the composite materials to simultaneously remove MB⁺ and MO^- under continuous flow conditions, also showing regeneration capability and reusability, thus providing an alternative to well-known mixed bed resins.

Carbon and zeolite-based composites for radionuclide and heavy metal sorption

Zeolites have been investigated as sorbents of heavy metals from water. Since graphene oxide was already reported as promising radionuclide sorbent, we developed composite materials containing both a synthetic zeolite (type A, P or Y) and graphene oxide to be multifunctional sorbents. The extension of multifunctionality of sorbents was done by presence of third component, exfoliated graphite, to have additional properties as conductivity. The changing sorption activities of a composite was studied depending on its composition and functional modification. The composites, characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Raman, FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, were tested for sorption of selected radionuclides (¹³⁴Cs⁺, ⁸⁵Sr²⁺) and heavy metals (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺). The dependency on composition was found in connection with a high sorption of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺. Finally, optimized multifunctional sorbents (Gr-GO-COOH-A in ratio 40:40:20 and Gr:GO:A in ratio 25:25:50) were found to keep interesting high sorption activities for heavy metals and radionuclides with good conductivity properties.

Zr4+-terephthalate MOFs with 6-connected structures, highly efficient As(III/V) sorption and superhydrophobic properties

The use of terephthalate ligands with C_nH_2n+1NH-chains (n ≥ 6) led to the isolation of the first examples of Zr⁴⁺-terephthalate MOFs with 6-connected frameworks. The material with hexyl-amino functional groups has been proved to be an exceptional sorbent for the removal of As(III/V) toxic species from aqueous media, whereas MOFs with heptyl to dodecyl-amino moieties are superhydrophobic with promising oil-water separation properties.

Rapid Determination of Mercury Ions in Environmental Water Based on an N-Rich Covalent Organic Framework Potential Sensor

In this article, an N-rich covalent organic framework (COFTFPB-TZT) was successfully synthesized using 4,4′,4′-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) trianiline (TZT), and 4-[3,5-bis (4-formyl-phenyl) phenyl] benzaldehyde (TFPB). The as-prepared COFTFPB-TZT possesses irregular cotton wool patches with a large specific surface area. A novel selective electrode based on COFTFPB-TZT was used for the determination of Mercury ions. The abundance of N atoms in COFTFPB-TZT provides more coordination sites for Hg2+ adsorption, resulting in a change in the surface membrane potential of the electrode to selectively recognize Hg2+. Under optimal experimental conditions, the ion-selective electrode shows a good potential response to Hg2+, with a linear range of 1.0 × 10−9∼1.0 × 10−4, a Nernst response slope of 30.32 ± 0.2 mV/-PC at 25°C and a detection limit of 4.5 pM. At the same time, the mercury-ion electrode shows a fast response time of 10 s and good reproducibility and stability. The selectivity coefficients for Fe2+, Zn2+, As3+, Cr6+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Pb2+, NH4+, Ag+, Ba2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+ are found to be small, indicating no interference in the detection system. The proposed method can be successfully applied to the determination of Hg2+ in 3 typical environmental water samples, with a recovery rate of 98.6–101.8%. In comparison with the spectrophotometric method utilizing dithizone, the proposed method is simple and fast and holds great potential application prospects in environmental water quality monitoring and other fields.
