Lithium Aluminate Complexes and Alumoles from 1,4-Dilithio-1,3-Butadienes and AlEt2Cl

Aluminagerma[5]pyramidanes-Formation and Skeletal Rearrangement

The salt metathesis reaction of dipotassium germacyclopentadienediide with aluminum(III) dichlorides provides either half-sandwich alumole complexes of germanium(II) or aluminylene germole complexes. Their molecular structure and the delocalized bonding situation, revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, are equally described as isomeric aluminagerma[5]pyramidanes with either the germanium or the aluminum atom in the apical position of the pentagonal pyramid. The product formation and the selectivity of the reaction depends on the third substituent of the aluminum dichloride. Aryl-substituents favor the formation of alumole complexes and Cp*-substituents that of the isomeric germole complexes. With amino-substituents at the aluminum atom mixtures of both isomers are formed and the positional exchange of the two heteroatoms is shown by NMR spectroscopy. The alumole complexes of germanium(II) undergo facile reductive elimination of germanium and form the corresponding alumoles.

The Field of Main Group Lewis Acids and Lewis Superacids: Important Basics and Recent Developments

New developments in the field of Lewis acidity are highlighted, with the focus of novel Lewis acids and Lewis superacids of group 2, 13, 14, and 15 elements. Several important basics, illustrated by modern examples (classification of Donor-Acceptor (DA) complexes, amphoteric nature of any compound in terms of DA interactions, reorganization energies of main group Lewis acids and the role of the energies of frontier orbitals) are presented and discussed. It is emphasized that the Lewis acidity phenomena are general and play vital role in different areas of chemistry: from weak "atomophilic" interactions to the complexes of Lewis superacids.

C,C- and C,N-Chelated Organocopper Compounds

Copper-catalyzed and organocopper-involved reactions are of great significance in organic synthesis. To have a deep understanding of the reaction mechanisms, the structural characterizations of organocopper intermediates become indispensable. Meanwhile, the structure-function relationship of organocopper compounds could advance the rational design and development of new Cu-based reactions and organocopper reagents. Compared to the mono-carbonic ligand, the C,N- and C,C-bidentate ligands better stabilize unstable organocopper compounds. Bidentate ligands can chelate to the same copper atom via η²-mode, forming a mono-cupra-cyclic compounds with at least one acute C-Cu-C angle. When the bidentate ligands bind to two copper atoms via η¹-mode at each coordinating site, the bimetallic macrocyclic compounds will form nearly linear C-Cu-C angles. The anionic coordinating sites of the bidentate ligand can also bridge two metals via μ₂-mode, forming organocopper aggregates with Cu-Cu interactions and organocuprates with contact ion pair structures. The reaction chemistry of some selected organocopper compounds is highlighted, showing their unique structure-reactivity relationships.

Isolation and Reactivity of an Antiaromatic s-Block Metal Compound

The concepts of aromaticity and antiaromaticity have a long history, and countless demonstrations of these phenomena have been made with molecules based on elements from the p, d, and f blocks of the periodic table. In contrast, the limited oxidation-state flexibility of the s-block metals has long stood in the way of their participation in sophisticated π-bonding arrangements, and truly antiaromatic systems containing s-block metals are altogether absent or remain poorly defined. Using spectroscopic, structural, and computational techniques, we present herein the synthesis and authentication of a heterocyclic compound containing the alkaline earth metal beryllium that exhibits significant antiaromaticity, and detail its chemical reduction and Lewis-base-coordination chemistry.

An Unusual and Facile Synthetic Route to Alumoles

Reaction of the aluminum dialkynyl LAl(CCR)₂ (L=N,N‐chelate ligand and R=organic group) with B(C₆F₅)₃ proceeds through an intermediate with Al⋅⋅⋅η²‐C≡C side‐on coordination to form the alumoles (2, 4, 6). A distinctive reaction pattern indicates a new facile synthetic route to aluminum‐containing heterocycles. The synthetic process is described, and the characterization of compounds and computational calculations were carried out. Furthermore, alumoles 2 and 4 exhibit an aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) of the bright yellow fluorescence.

Ring expansion of alumoles with organic azides: selective formation of six-membered aluminum-nitrogen heterocycles

A cyclopentadienyl-substituted alumole is shown to undergo ring expansions with a series of organic azides, affording 1,2-azaaluminabenzenes either with or without an azo group.

Aside from simple Lewis acid–base chemistry, the reaction chemistry of aluminacyclopentadienes, which are commonly referred to as aluminoles or simply alumoles, remains relatively underdeveloped. To date, few attempts to extend their inherent insertion and cycloaddition reactivity to the construction of stable aluminum-containing heterocycles have been reported. Herein, we demonstrate the selective ring expansion of a cyclopentadienyl-substituted alumole with a series of organic azides to form unsaturated six-membered AlN heterocycles. Depending on the substituent on the azide, the reaction proceeds either with or without loss of dinitrogen, leading to incorporation of only the “NR” unit of the azide or the entire azo substituent into the periphery of the heterocycle. A deeper understanding of these ring expansion reactions is reached through computational studies, illustrating deviations in the mechanism as a function of the organic azide employed.

Alkaline-earth metallacyclic complexes bearing a diborane-bridged tetraamide ligand: synthesis, structure and fluorescence property

A series of alkaline-earth (Mg, Ca, and Sr) metallacyclic complexes bearing a diborane-bridged tetraamide ligand were achieved for the first time through a clean one-step approach. All of these metallacycles were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. UV-Vis absorption/emission spectroscopy showed deep blue fluorescence of these complexes.

Comparing Neutral (Monometallic) and Anionic (Bimetallic) Aluminum Complexes in Hydroboration Catalysis: Influences of Lithium Cooperation and Ligand Set

Bimetallic lithium aluminates and neutral aluminum counterparts are compared as catalysts in hydroboration reactions with aldehydes, ketones, imines and alkynes. Possessing Li–Al cooperativity, ate catalysts are found to be generally superior. Catalytic activity is also influenced by the ligand set, alkyl and/or amido. Devoid of an Al−H bond, iBu₂Al(TMP) operates as a masked hydride reducing benzophenone through a β‐Η transfer process. This catalyst library therefore provides an entry point into the future design of Al catalysts targeting substrate specific transformations.

Metallacyclopentadienes: synthesis, structure and reactivity

Metallacyclopentadienes, which possess two M-C(sp²) bonds and feature the structure of M(C[upper bond 1 start]R¹[double bond, length as m-dash]CR²-CR³[double bond, length as m-dash]C[upper bond 1 end]R⁴), are an important class of five-membered metallacycles. They are considered as both reactive intermediates in the stoichiometric and catalytic transformations of organic molecules and useful precursors to main group element compounds, and have received considerable attention in organometallic chemistry, coordination chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry over the past six decades because of their unique metallacyclic structure. This review comprehensively presents the synthesis, structure and reactivity of the s-, p-, d- and f-block metallacyclopentadienes distributed in the whole periodic table. In addition, their application in synthetic organic chemistry and polymer chemistry is summarized. This review aims to be beneficial for the design and synthesis of novel metallacyclopentadienes, and for promoting the rapid development of metallacyclic chemistry.

The Recently Synthesized Dimagnesiabutadiene and the Analogous Dimetalla-Beryllium, -Calcium, -Strontium, and -Barium Compounds

The 2014 synthesis of the remarkable dimagnesium compound Mg₂ [C₄ (CH₃ )₂ (Si(CH₃ )₃ )₂ ](C₃ H₇ )₂ (C₄ H₈ O)₂ may point the way to a new chapter in alkaline earth organometallic chemistry. Accordingly, we have studied the known Mg compound and the analogous Be, Ca, Sr, and Ba structures. Although most of our theoretical predictions come from density functional methods, the latter have been benchmarked using coupled cluster theory including single, double, and perturbative triplet excitations, CCSD(T) using cc-pVTZ basis sets. Among our most important predictions are the energies for dissociation to the butadiene plus the RM-MR [R=(C₃ H₇ )₂ (C₄ H₈ O)₂ ; M=Be, Mg, Ca, Si, and Ba] entities. The most reliable predictions for the dissociation energies are 99-104 (Be), 85-93 (Mg), 90-99 (Ca), 83-92 (Sr), and 83-94 (Ba) kcal mol^-1 . Thus, there is reason to anticipate that the four unknown compounds should be achievable synthetically. The predicted metal-metal distances (not single bonds) are 2.89 Å (Mg⋅⋅⋅Mg), 3.46 Å (Ca⋅⋅⋅Ca), 3.75 Å (Sr⋅⋅⋅Sr), and 4.04 Å (Ba⋅⋅⋅Ba). The separated RM-MR compounds have longer M-M distances but genuine metal-metal single bonds. This perhaps counter intuitive result is due to the presence of the bridging carbons in the alkaline earth butadiene compounds. All five compounds incorporate metal-carbon ionic interactions.

The Preparation of Complexes of Germanone from a Germanium μ-Oxo Dimer

Complexes of germanone containing formal Ge=O→M bonds (M=Zn, B, Ge, Sn) were isolated and characterized. The compounds were prepared through a novel synthetic route using a germanium μ-oxo dimer 3 as the starting material. This method circumvents the need to employ germanones to prepare complexes of germanones.
