High-Frequency 1H NMR Chemical Shifts of SnII and PbII Hydrides Induced by Relativistic Effects: Quest for PbII Hydrides

Exploring Spin-Orbit Effects in a [Cu6Tl]+ Nanocluster Featuring an Uncommon Tl-H Interaction

Reaction of [CuH(PPh3)]6 with 1 equiv. of Tl(OTf) results in formation of [Cu6TlH6(PPh3)6][OTf] ([1]OTf]), which can be isolated in good yields. Variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, confirms the presence of a rare Tl-H orbital interaction. According to DFT, the 1H chemical shift of the Tl-adjacent hydride ligands of [1]+ includes 7.7 ppm of deshielding due to spin-orbit effects from the heavy Tl atom. This study provides valuable new insights into a rare class of metal hydrides, given that [1][OTf] is only the third isolable species reported to contain a Tl-H interaction.

Relativistic DFT Calculations of Cadmium and Selenium Solid-State NMR Spectra of CdSe Nanocrystal Surfaces

Solid-state NMR spectra have been used to probe the structure of CdSe nanocrystals and propose detailed models of their surface structures. Density functional theory (DFT)-optimized cluster models that represent probable molecular structures of carboxylate-coordinated surface sites have been proposed. However, to the best of our knowledge, 113Cd and 77Se chemical shifts have not been calculated for these surface models. We performed relativistic DFT calculations of cadmium and selenium magnetic shielding tensors on model compounds with previously measured solid-state NMR spectra with (i) the four-component Dirac-Kohn-Sham (DKS) Hamiltonian and (ii) the scalar and (iii) spin-orbit levels within the ZORA Hamiltonian. Molecular clusters with Cd and Se sites in varying bonding environments were used to model CdSe (100) and CdSe(111) surfaces capped with carboxylic acid ligands. Our calculations identify the observed 113Cd isotropic chemical shifts δ(iso) of -465, -318, and -146 ppm arising from CdSeO3, CdSe2O2, and CdSe3O surface groups, respectively, with very good agreement with experimental measurements. The 113Cd chemical shifts linearly decrease with the number of O-neighbors. The calculated spans (δ11 - δ33) encompass the experimental values for CdSe3O and CdSe2O2 clusters but are slightly larger than the measured value for CdSeO3 clusters. Relativistic DFT calculations predicted a one-bond 113Cd-77Se scalar coupling of 258 Hz, which is in good agreement with the experimental values of 250 Hz. With a dense coverage of carboxylic acid ligands, the CdSe (100) surface shows a distribution of Cd-Se bond lengths and J-couplings. Relativistic DFT simulations thus aid in interpretation of NMR spectra of CdSe nanocrystals and related nanomaterials.

Access to Monomeric Lead(II) Hydrides with Remarkable Thermostability and Their Use in Catalytic Hydroboration of Carbonyl Derivatives

We report on the remarkable stability of unprecedented, monomeric lead(II) hydrides M⁺[LPb(II)H]^- (M[1-H]), where L = 2,6-bis(3,5-diphenylpyrrolyl)pyridine and M = (18-crown-6)potassium or ([2.2.2]-cryptand)potassium. The half-life of [K18c6][1-H] of ∼2 days in tetrahydrofuran at 25 °C is significantly longer than those reported for dimeric lead(II) hydrides supported by bulky terphenyl ligands (few hours at low temperatures), which are the only examples known for lead(II) hydride compounds. The presence of a Pb-H bond in [1-H]^- was unambiguously identified by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Remarkably, a ¹H resonance of the hydride ligand was found at δ = 41.43 ppm (¹J_PbH = 1312 Hz). For reactivity study, [1-H]^- serves as an excellent hydroboration catalyst with high turnover numbers and turnover frequencies for several carbonyl compounds.

Hydrostannylation of carbon dioxide by a hydridostannylene molybdenum complex

Reaction of the aryltin(II) hydrides {Ar^iPr₄Sn(μ-H)}₂ or {Ar^iPr₆Sn(μ-H)}₂ (Ar^iPr₄ = -C₆H₃-2,6-(C₆H₃-2,6-ⁱPr₂)₂, Ar^iPr₆ = -C₆H₃-2,6-(C₆H₂-2,4,6-ⁱPr₃)₂) with two equivalents of the molybdenum carbonyl [Mo(CO)₅(THF)] afforded the divalent tin hydride transition metal complexes, Mo(CO)₅{Sn(Ar^iPr₆)H}, (1), or Mo(CO)₅{Sn(Ar^iPr₄)(THF)H} (2), respectively. Complex 1 effects the facile hydrostannylation of carbon dioxide, to yield Mo(CO)₅{Sn(Ar^iPr₆)(κ²-O,O'-O₂CH)}, (3), which features a bidentate formate ligand coordinating the tin atom. Reaction of 3 with the pinacolborane, HBpin (pin = pinacolato) in benzene regenerated 1 in quantitative yield. All complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, as well as UV-visible, IR, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopies. The isolation of 1 and 2 is consistent with the existence of monomeric forms of {Ar^iPr₄Sn(μ-H)}₂ and {Ar^iPr₆Sn(μ-H)}₂ in solution. Regeneration of 1 from 3via reaction with pinacolborane as the hydrogen source shows the catalytic potential of 1 in the hydrogenation of CO₂.

Towards Accurate Predictions of Proton NMR Spectroscopic Parameters in Molecular Solids

The factors contributing to the accuracy of quantum-chemical calculations for the prediction of proton NMR chemical shifts in molecular solids are systematically investigated. Proton chemical shifts of six solid amino acids with hydrogen atoms in various bonding environments (CH, CH₂ , CH₃ , OH, SH and NH₃ ) were determined experimentally using ultra-fast magic-angle spinning and proton-detected 2D NMR experiments. The standard DFT method commonly used for the calculations of NMR parameters of solids is shown to provide chemical shifts that deviate from experiment by up to 1.5 ppm. The effects of the computational level (hybrid DFT functional, coupled-cluster calculation, inclusion of relativistic spin-orbit coupling) are thoroughly discussed. The effect of molecular dynamics and nuclear quantum effects are investigated using path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations. It is demonstrated that the accuracy of the calculated proton chemical shifts is significantly better when these effects are included in the calculations.

Hydridoorganostannylene Coordination: Group 4 Metallocene Dichloride Reduction in Reaction with Organodihydridostannate Anions

Organodihydridoelement anions of germanium and tin were reacted with metallocene dichlorides of Group 4 metals Ti, Zr and Hf. The germate anion [Ar*GeH2 ]- reacts with hafnocene dichloride under formation of the substitution product [Cp2 Hf(GeH2 Ar*)2 ]. Reaction of the organodihydridostannate with metallocene dichlorides affords the reduction products [Cp2 M(SnHAr*)2 ] (M=Ti, Zr, Hf). Abstraction of a hydride substituent from the titanium bis(hydridoorganostannylene) complex results in formation of cation [Cp2 M(SnAr*)(SnHAr*)]+ exhibiting a short Ti-Sn interaction. (Ar*=2,6-Trip2 C6 H3 , Trip=2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl).

Deprotonation of Organogermanium and Organotin Trihydrides

Terphenyltin and terphenylgermanium trihydrides were deprotonated in reaction with strong bases, such as LiMe, LDA, or KBn. In the solid state, the Li salts of the germate anion 4 and 4a exhibit a Li-Ge contact. In the Li salt of the dihydridostannate anion 6a, the Li cation is not coordinated at the tin atom instead an interaction of the Li cation with the hydride substituents was found. Evidenced by ¹H-⁷Li-HOESY NMR spectroscopy the Li-salt of the deprotonated tin hydride 6a exhibits in toluene solution a contact between Li cation and hydride substituents, whereas in the ¹H-⁷Li-HOESY NMR spectrum of the homologous germate salt 4a, no crosspeak between hydride and Li signals was found. The organodihydridogermate and -stannate react as nucleophiles with low-valent Group 14 electrophiles. Thus, three compounds were synthesized: Ar-Ë'-EH₂-Ar (E', E = Sn, Ge; Pb, Ge; Pb, Sn; Ar = Ar', Ar*). Following an alternative synthesis Ar'SnH₂PbAr* was synthesized in reaction between [(Ar*PbH)₂] and [(Ar'SnH)₄] generated in situ. In reaction between low-valent organotin hydride [(Ar*SnH)₂] and organdihydridostannate [Ar*SnH₂]^- formation of distannate [Ar*₂Sn₂H₃]^- was found.

On the heavy atom on light atom relativistic effect in the NMR shielding constants of phosphine tellurides

The relativistic HALA effect has been shown to depend on the spatial deformation of the lone electron pairs of a heavy atom, as demonstrated for alkyl and alkene phosphine tellurides. It was found that HALA effect on phosphorous nuclear magnetic resonance shielding constant is strongly dependent on the spatial arrangements of light substituents on phosphorus, resulting in the deformation of the lone electron pairs of tellurium.

Two quasi-stable lead(ii) hydrides at ambient temperature

Simple reactions of their terphenyl lead bromide precursors with DIBAL-H in diethyl ether solution at ca. -78 °C leads to the isolation of the hydrides {Pb(μ-H)ArPri4}2 (ArPri4 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-Pri2)2) (1) and {Pb(μ-H)ArMe6}2 (ArMe6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2) (2) in good yield (60-80%). The isolated solids are stable at up to 5 °C for several weeks but are thermally labile in solution. Hydride 1 decomposes to the diplumbyne ArPri4PbPbArPri4, while 2 decomposes to the plumbylene Pb(ArMe6)2. The decomposition of 1 was determined to be zero order with a rate constant of ca. 2.0 × 10-5 M min-1 at 298 K.

Taking Solution Proton NMR to Its Extreme: Prediction and Detection of a Hydride Resonance in an Intermediate-Spin Iron Complex

Guided by DFT based modeling the chemical shift range of a hydride resonance in the proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum of the intermediate-spin, square planar iron complex ^tBu(PNP)Fe-H was predicted and detected as a broad resonance at -3560 ppm (295 K) with a temperature dependent shift of approximately 2000 ppm between 223 and 383 K. The first detection of a metal-bonded hydrogen atom by solution NMR in a complex with a paramagnetic ground state illustrates the interplay of theory and experiment for the characterization of key components in paramagnetic base metal catalysis.

NMR 1H-Shielding Constants of Hydrogen-Bond Donor Reflect Manifestation of the Pauli Principle

NMR spectroscopy is one of the most useful methods for detection and characterization of hydrogen bond (H-bond) interactions in biological systems. For H bonds X-H···Y, where X and Y are O or N, it is generally believed that a decrease in ¹H-shielding constants relates to a shortening of H-bond donor-acceptor distance. Here we investigated computationally the trend of ¹H-shielding constants for hydrogen-bonded protons in a series of guanine C8-substituted GC pair model compounds as a function of the molecular structure. Furthermore, the electron density distribution around the hydrogen atom was analyzed with the Voronoi deformation density (VDD) method. Our findings demonstrate that ¹H-shielding values of the hydrogen bond are determined by the depletion of charge around the hydrogen atom, which stems from the fact that electrons obey the Pauli exclusion principle.

Low-valent group 14 element hydride chemistry: towards catalysis

The chemistry of group 14 element(ii) hydride complexes has rapidly expanded since the first stable example of such a compound was reported in 2000. Since that time it has become apparent that these systems display remarkable reactivity patterns, in some cases mimicking those of late transition-metal (TM) hydride compounds. This is especially so for the hydroelementation of unsaturated organic substrates. Recently, this aspect of their reactivity has been extended to the use of group 14 element(ii) hydrides as efficient, "TM-like" catalysts in organic synthesis. This review will detail how the chemistry of these hydride compounds has advanced since their early development. Throughout, there is a focus on the importance of ligand effects in these systems, and how ligand design can greatly modify a coordinated complex's electronic structure, reactivity, and catalytic efficiency.
