Optimization of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and graphite fillers to endow thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites with superior electromagnetic interference shielding performance

The rapid growth, integration, and miniaturization of electronics have raised significant concerns about how to handle issues with electromagnetic interference (EMI), which has increased demand for the creation of EMI shielding materials. In order to effectively shield against electromagnetic interference (EMI), this study developed a variety of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-based nanocomposites in conjunction with CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and graphite. The filler percentage and nanocomposite thickness were tuned and optimized. The designed GF15-TPU nanocomposite, which has a 5 mm thickness, 15 weight percent cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, and 35 weight percent graphite, showed the highest total EMI shielding effectiveness value of 41.5 dB in the 8.2-12.4 GHz frequency range, or 99.993% shielding efficiency, out of all the prepared polymer nanocomposites. According to experimental findings, the nanocomposite's dipole polarization, interfacial polarization, conduction loss, eddy current loss, natural resonance, exchange resonance, multiple scattering, and high attenuation significantly contribute to improving its electromagnetic interference shielding properties. The created TPU-based nanocomposites containing graphite and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have the potential to be used in communication systems, defense, spacecraft, and aircraft as EMI shielding materials.

Recent advances on outstanding microwave absorption and electromagnetic interference shielding nanocomposites of ZnO semiconductor

The electromagnetic interference shielding and microwave attenuation capabilities of ZnO semiconductor nanocomposites have recently been improved using a variety of approaches by correctly modifying their permittivity. To improve microwave attenuation, ZnO semiconductor nanostructures have been combined with graphene, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles and their alloys, two-dimensional MXene, spinel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles, polymer systems, and textiles. This paper covers the opportunities and constraints that these cutting-edge nanocomposites in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption encounter as well as the research progress of ZnO semiconductor-based nanocomposite. The structure-function relationship of electromagnetic wave absorption nanocomposites, design strategies, synthesis techniques, and various types of advanced nanocomposites based on ZnO semiconductor are also covered. In order to design and prepare high efficiency ZnO semiconductor based electromagnetic wave absorbing materials for use in applications of next-generation electronics and aerospace, this article can offer some useful ideas.

Chitosan/dialdehyde cellulose hydrogels with covalently anchored polypyrrole: Novel conductive, antibacterial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory materials

In this work, conductive composite hydrogels with covalently attached polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles are prepared. Hydrogels are based on partially re-acetylated chitosan soluble at physiological pH without any artificial structural modifications or need for an acidic environment, which simplifies synthesis and purification. Low-toxic and sustainable dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) was used for crosslinking chitosan and covalent anchoring of PPy colloidal particles. The condensation reaction between DAC and PPy is reported for the first time and improves not only the anchoring of PPy particles but also control over the properties of the final composite. The soluble chitosan and PPy particles are shown to act in synergy, which improves the biological properties of the materials. Prepared composite hydrogels are non-cytotoxic, non-irritating, antibacterial, can capture reactive oxygen species often related to excessive inflammation, have conductivity similar to human tissues, enhance in vitro cell growth (migration assay), and have immunomodulatory effects related to the stimulation of neutrophils and macrophages. The covalent attachment of PPy also strengthens the hydrogel network. The aldol condensation as a method for PPy covalent anchoring thus presents an interesting possibility for the development of advanced biomaterials in the future.

Highly efficient affinity anchoring of gold nanoparticles on chitosan nanofibers via dialdehyde cellulose for reusable catalytic devices

Polysaccharides are often utilized as reducing and stabilizing agents and as support in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). However, using approaches like spin coating or dip coating, AuNPs are generally bound to the support only by weak interactions, which can lead to decreased stability of the composite. Here, a two-stage approach for the preparation of composites with covalently anchored AuNPs is proposed. First, 5 nm AuNPs with high catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (TOF = 15.8 min-1) were synthesized and stabilized using fully oxidized and solubilized 2,3-dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). Next, the carbonyl groups in the shell of prepared nanoparticles were used to tether AuNPs to chitosan nanofibers with quantitative efficacy in a process that we termed "affinity anchoring". Schiff bases formed during this process were subsequently reduced to secondary amines by borohydride, which greatly improved the stability of the composite in the broad pH range from 3 to 9. The catalytic efficacy of the resulting composite is demonstrated using a model catalytic device, showing high stability, fast conversion rates, and direct reusability.

Controlled Drug Delivery Device for Cornea Treatment and Novel Method for Its Testing

A new solution for local anesthetic and antibiotic delivery after eye surgery is presented. A contact lens-shaped collagen drug carrier was created and loaded by Levofloxacin and Tetracaine with a riboflavin crosslinked surface layer, thus impeding diffusion. The crosslinking was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, whereas the drug release was investigated using UV-Vis spectrometry. Due to the surface barrier, the drug gradually releases into the corneal tissue. To test the function of the carrier, a 3D printed device and a new test method for a controlled drug release, which mimics the geometry and physiological lacrimation rate of the human eye, were developed. The experimental setup with simple geometry revealed that the prepared drug delivery device can provide the prolonged release profile of the pseudo-first-order for up to 72 h. The efficiency of the drug delivery was further demonstrated using a dead porcine cornea as a drug recipient, without the need to use live animals for testing. Our drug delivery system significantly surpasses the efficiency of antibiotic and anesthetic eyedrops that would have to be applied approximately 30 times per hour to achieve the same dose as that delivered continuously by our device.

Sub PPM Detection of NO2 Using Strontium Doped Bismuth Ferrite Nanostructures

The present work investigates the NO₂ sensing properties of acceptor-doped ferrite perovskite nanostructures. The Sr-doped BiFeO₃ nanostructures were synthesized by a salt precursor-based modified pechini method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The synthesized materials were drop coated to fabricate chemoresistive gas sensors, delivering a maximum sensitivity of 5.2 towards 2 ppm NO₂ at 260 °C. The recorded values of response and recovery time are 95 s and 280 s, respectively. The sensor based on Bi_0.8Sr_0.2FeO_3-δ (BSFO) that was operated was shown to have a LOD (limit of detection) as low as 200 ppb. The sensor proved to be promising for repeatability and selectivity measurements, indicating that the Sr doping Bismuth ferrite could be a potentially competitive material for sensing applications. A relevant gas-sensing mechanism is also proposed based on the surface adsorption and reaction behavior of the material.

Boosting the Photoelectrochemical Performance of Au/ZnO Nanorods by Co-Occurring Gradient Doping and Surface Plasmon Modification

Band bending modification of metal/semiconductor hybrid nanostructures requires low-cost and effective designs in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. To this end, it is evinced that gradient doping of Au nanoparticles (NPs) inwards the ZnO nanorods (NRs) through thermal treatment facilitated faster transport of the photo-induced charge carriers. Systematic PEC measurements show that the resulting gradient Au-doped ZnO NRs yielded a photocurrent density of 0.009 mA/cm² at 1.1 V (vs. NHE), which is 2.5-fold and 8-fold improved compared to those of Au-sensitized ZnO and the as-prepared ZnO NRs, respectively. The IPCE and ABPE efficiency tests confirmed the boosted photoresponse of gradient Au-incorporated ZnO NRs, particularly in the visible spectrum due to the synergistic surface plasmonic effect of Au NPs. A gradient Au dopant profile promoted the separation and transfer of the photo-induced charge carriers at the electrolyte interface via more upward band bending according to the elaborated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy analyses. Therefore, this research presents an economical and facile strategy for preparing gradient plasmonic noble NP-incorporated semiconductor NRs, which have excellent potential in energy conversion and storage technologies.

Development of New Health Risk Assessment of Nanoparticles: EPA Health Risk Assessment Revised

The concentration of nanoparticles in the ambient air can lead to induced toxicities; however, it appears that nanoparticles’ unique properties are completely omitted when assessing health risks. This paper aims to enhance the EPA health risk assessment by incorporating two new variables that consider the size of nanoparticles: the toxicity multiplier and the size multiplier. The former considers the qualitative aspect of the size of particles within a concentration, whilst the latter takes into account the effects associated with the number of particles of the specific i-th size distribution interval. To observe the impact of the new variables, a case study was performed. The studied element was cadmium, which was measured using ICP-MS to discover concentrations of size fractions, ranging from <15.1 to <9830 nm. Next, the cadmium concentration is assessed using both the current state-of-the-art method and the proposed method with adjustments. Based on the new approach, the final risk was 1.1 × 10−5, which was almost 24 times higher compared with the current method. The contribution of nanoparticles to the risk value grew from barely 6% to an alarming 88%. Therefore, the enhanced method can lead to more realistic results when assessing the health risks of nanoparticles.

Dicarboxylated hyaluronate: Synthesis of a new, highly functionalized and biocompatible derivative

Sequential periodate-chlorite oxidation of sodium hyaluronate to 2,3-dicarboxylated hyaluronate (DCH), a novel biocompatible and highly functionalized derivative bearing additional pair of COOH groups at C2 and C3 carbons of oxidized ᴅ-glucuronic acid units, is investigated. The impact of various reaction parameters (time, oxidizer concentration, and molar amount) on DCH's composition, molecular weight, degree of oxidation, and cytotoxicity are investigated to guide the synthesis of DCH derivatives of desired properties. Subsequently, fully (99%) and partially (70%) oxidized DCH derivatives were compared to untreated sodium hyaluronate in terms of anticancer drug cisplatin loading efficacy, carrier capacity, drug release rates, and cytotoxicity towards healthy and cancerous cell lines. DCH derivatives were found to be superior in every aspect, having nearly twice the carrier capacity, significantly slower release rates, and higher efficacy. DCH is thus a highly interesting hyaluronate derivative with an adjustable degree of oxidation, molecular weight, and great potential for further modifications.

One-step synthesis of gold nanoparticles for catalysis and SERS applications using selectively dicarboxylated cellulose and hyaluronate

Properties and applications of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) depend on their characteristics which are intrinsically connected to the reducing and capping agents used in their synthesis. Although polysaccharides are commonly used for Au salt reduction, the control over the result is often limited. Here, the selectively dicarboxylated cellulose (DCC) and hyaluronate (DCH) with adjustable composition and molecular weight are used for the first time as reducing and capping agents for AuNPs preparation in an environmental friendly one-step synthesis. Mechanism of reduction and structure-function relationships between the composition of oxidized polysaccharides and properties of formed AuNPs are elucidated and the variances in the macromolecular architecture of dicarboxypolysaccharides are applied to guide the growth of AuNPs. While the homogenous structure and high density of carboxyl groups of fully-oxidized DCC induced isotropic growth of small and uniform AuNPs with good catalytic performance (d = ~20 nm, TOF = 7.3 min^-1, k = 1.47 min^-1), the lower stabilizing potential and slower reduction rates of the DCH induced the anisotropic growth of larger polyhedral ~50 nm nanoparticles, which increased the Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering efficacy (9× stronger Raman signals on average compared to AuDCC). The use of dicarboxypolysaccharides with adjustable composition and properties thus introduced a new degree of freedom for the preparation of AuNPs with desired properties.

Comparison of dialdehyde polysaccharides as crosslinkers for hydrogels: The case of poly(vinyl alcohol)

A little is known about the link between the macromolecular architecture of dialdehyde polysaccharides (DAPs), their crosslinking capabilities, and the properties of resulting hydrogels. Here, DAPs based on cellulose, dextrin, dextran, and hyaluronate were compared as crosslinkers for poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA. The swelling, network parameters, viscoelastic properties, porosity, and cytotoxicity of PVA/DAP hydrogels were investigated concerning the crosslinker structure, molecular weight, aldehyde group density per macromolecule, and the size of spontaneously formed crosslinker nano-assemblies. Generally, crosslinkers based on linear polysaccharides (cellulose, hyaluronate) performed more reliably, while the presence of branching could be both beneficial (dextran) but also detrimental (dextrin) at lower crosslinker concentrations. For example, the hydrogel swelling differed by up to one-third (600 vs. 400%) and storage modulus even by up to one half (~7000 vs. ~3500 Pa) depending on crosslinker structure and properties. These differences were rationalized by variances in crosslinking modes derived based on obtained data.

Enhancing cisplatin anticancer effectivity and migrastatic potential by modulation of molecular weight of oxidized dextran carrier

The molecular weight (M_w) of dextran derivatives, such as regioselectively oxidized dicarboxydextran (DXA), is greatly influencing their faith in an organism, which could be possibly used to improve anticancer drug delivery. Here we present a modified method of sulfonation-induced chain scission allowing direct and accurate control over the M_w of DXA without increasing its polydispersity. Prepared DXA derivatives (M_w = 10-185 kDa) have been conjugated to cisplatin and the M_w of the carrier found to have a significant impact on cisplatin release rates, in vitro cytotoxicity, and migrastatic potential. Conjugates with the high-M_w DXA showed particularly increased anticancer efficacy. The best conjugate was four times more effective against malignant prostatic cell lines than free cisplatin and significantly inhibited the ovarian cancer cell migration. This was traced to the characteristics of spontaneously formed cisplatin-crosslinked DXA nanogels influenced by M_w of DXA and amount of loaded cisplatin.

High-Performance, Lightweight, and Flexible Thermoplastic Polyurethane Nanocomposites with Zn2+-Substituted CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles and Reduced Graphene Oxide as Shielding Materials against Electromagnetic Pollution

The development of flexible, lightweight, and thin high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding materials is urgently needed for the protection of humans, the environment, and electronic devices against electromagnetic radiation. To achieve this, the spinel ferrite nanoparticles CoFe2O4 (CZ1), Co0.67Zn0.33Fe2O4 (CZ2), and Co0.33Zn0.67Fe2O4 (CZ3) were prepared by the sonochemical synthesis method. Further, these prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were embedded in a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix. The maximum electromagnetic interference (EMI) total shielding effectiveness (SET) values in the frequency range 8.2-12.4 GHz of these nanocomposites with a thickness of only 0.8 mm were 48.3, 61.8, and 67.8 dB for CZ1-rGO-TPU, CZ2-rGO-TPU, and CZ3-rGO-TPU, respectively. The high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding characteristics of the CZ3-rGO-TPU nanocomposite stem from dipole and interfacial polarization, conduction loss, multiple scattering, eddy current effect, natural resonance, high attenuation constant, and impedance matching. The optimized CZ3-rGO-TPU nanocomposite can be a potential candidate as a lightweight, flexible, thin, and high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding material.

Superparamagnetic ZnFe2O4 Nanoparticles-Reduced Graphene Oxide-Polyurethane Resin Based Nanocomposites for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Application

Superparamagnetic ZnFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles were prepared by the sonochemical synthesis method at different ultra-sonication times of 25 min (ZS25), 50 min (ZS50), and 100 min (ZS100). The structural properties of ZnFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles were controlled via sonochemical synthesis time. The average crystallite size increases from 3.0 nm to 4.0 nm with a rise of sonication time from 25 min to 100 min. The change of physical properties of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles with the increase of sonication time was observed. The prepared ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles show superparamagnetic behavior. The prepared ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (ZS25, ZS50, and ZS100) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were embedded in a polyurethane resin (PUR) matrix as a shield against electromagnetic pollution. The ultra-sonication method has been used for the preparation of nanocomposites. The total shielding effectiveness (SET) value for the prepared nanocomposites was studied at a thickness of 1 mm in the range of 8.2-12.4 GHz. The high attenuation constant (α) value of the prepared ZS100-RGO-PUR nanocomposite as compared with other samples recommended high absorption of electromagnetic waves. The existence of electric-magnetic nanofillers in the resin matrix delivered the inclusive acts of magnetic loss, dielectric loss, appropriate attenuation constant, and effective impedance matching. The synergistic effect of ZnFe2O4 and RGO in the PUR matrix led to high interfacial polarization and, consequently, significant absorption of the electromagnetic waves. The outcomes and methods also assure an inventive and competent approach to develop lightweight and flexible polyurethane resin matrix-based nanocomposites, consisting of superparamagnetic zinc ferrite nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide as a shield against electromagnetic pollution.

Oxidized polysaccharides for anticancer-drug delivery: What is the role of structure?

Study provides an in-depth analysis of the structure-function relationship of polysaccharide anticancer drug carriers and points out benefits and potential drawbacks of differences in polysaccharide glycosidic bonding, branching and drug binding mode of the carriers. Cellulose, dextrin, dextran and hyaluronic acid have been regioselectively oxidized to respective dicarboxylated derivatives, allowing them to directly conjugate cisplatin, while preserving their major structural features intact. The structure of source polysaccharide has crucial impact on conjugation effectiveness, carrier capacity, drug release rates, in vitro cytotoxicity and cellular uptake. For example, while branched structure of dextrin-based carrier partially counter the undesirable initial burst release, it also attenuates the cellular uptake and the cytotoxicity of carried drug. Linear polysaccharides containing β-(1→4) glycosidic bonds and oxidized at C2 and C3 (cellulose and hyaluronate) have the best overall combination of structural features for improved drug delivery applications including potentiation of the cisplatin efficacy towards malignances.

Vibration Sensing Systems Based on Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) and Microwave-Assisted Synthesized ZnO Star-Like Particles with Controllable Structural and Physical Properties

This study deals with the effect of zinc oxide (ZnO) star-like filler addition to the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix, and its effect on the structural and physical properties and consequences to the vibration sensing performance. Microwave-assisted synthesis in open vessel setup was optimized for the preparation of the star-like shape of ZnO crystalline particles. The crystalline and star-like structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). Furthermore, the PVDF-based composites were prepared using a spin-coating technique from solution. An investigation of the transformation of the α crystalline phase to the β crystalline phase of the neat PVDF matrix and with various filler concentrations was performed using Fourier-Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which shows an enhanced β-phase from 44.1% to 66.4% for neat PVDF and PVDF with 10 wt.% of particles, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements and investigation showed enhanced crystallinity and melting enthalpy of the composite systems in comparison to neat PVDF, since ZnO star-like particles act as nucleating agents. The impact of the filler content on the physical properties, such as thermal and dynamic mechanical properties, which are critical for the intended applications, were investigated as well, and showed that fabricated composites exhibit enhanced thermal stability. Because of its dynamic mechanical properties, the composites can still be utilized as flexible sensors. Finally, the vibration sensing capability was systematically investigated, and it was shown that the addition of ZnO star-like filler enhanced the value of the thickness mode d₃₃ piezoelectric constant from 16.3 pC/N to 29.2 pC/N for neat PVDF and PVDF with 10 wt.% of ZnO star-like particles.

Design of dialdehyde cellulose crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels for transdermal drug delivery and wound dressings

2,3-Dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) was used as an efficient and low-toxicity crosslinker to prepare thin PVA/DAC hydrogel films designed for topical applications such as drug-loaded patches, wound dressings or cosmetic products. An optimization of hydrogel properties was achieved by the variation of two factors - the amount of crosslinker and the weight-average molecular weight (M_w) of the source PVA. The role of each factor to network parameters, mechanical, rheological and surface properties, hydrogel porosity and transdermal absorption is discussed. The best results were obtained for hydrogel films prepared using 0.25 wt% of DAC and PVA with M_w = 130 kDa, which had a high porosity and drug-loading capacity (high water content), mechanical properties allowing easy handling, best adherence to the skin from all tested samples and improved transdermal drug-delivery. Hydrogel films are biocompatible, show no cytotoxicity and have no negative impact on cell growth and morphology in their presence. Furthermore, hydrogels do not support cell migration and attachment to their surface, which should ensure easy removal of hydrogel patches even from wounded or damaged skin after use.

Impact of sonochemical synthesis condition on the structural and physical properties of MnFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles

Herein, we report sonochemical synthesis of MnFe₂O₄ spinel ferrite nanoparticles using UZ SONOPULS HD 2070 Ultrasonic homogenizer (frequency: 20 kHz and power: 70 W). The sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input cause appreciable changes in the structural, cation distribution and physical properties of MnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles. The average crystallite size of synthesized MnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles was increased with increase of sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input. The occupational formula by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles was (Mn_0.29Fe_0.42)[Mn_0.71Fe_1.58]O₄ and (Mn_0.28Fe_0.54) [Mn_0.72Fe_1.46]O₄ at sonication time 20 min and 80 min, respectively. The value of the saturation magnetization was increased from 1.9 emu/g to 52.5 emu/g with increase of sonication time 20 min to 80 min at constant 50% amplitude of ultrasonic power input, whereas, it was increased from 30.2 emu/g to 59.4 emu/g with increase of the percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input at constant sonication time 60 min. The highest value of dielectric constant (ε') was 499 at 1 kHz for nanoparticles at sonication time 20 min, whereas, ac conductivity was 368 × 10^-9 S/cm at 1 kHz for spinel ferrite nanoparticles at sonication time 20 min. The demonstrated controllable physical characteristics over sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input are a key step to design spinel ferrite material of desired properties for specific application. The investigation of microwave operating frequency suggest that these prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles are potential candidate for fabrication of devices at high frequency applications.

NiFe2O4 Nanoparticles Synthesized by Dextrin from Corn-Mediated Sol-Gel Combustion Method and Its Polypropylene Nanocomposites Engineered with Reduced Graphene Oxide for the Reduction of Electromagnetic Pollution

In this work, nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by dextrin from corn-mediated sol-gel combustion method and were annealed at 600, 800, and 1000 °C. The structural and physical characteristics of prepared nanoparticles were studied in detail. The average crystallite size was 20.6, 34.5, and 68.6 nm for NiFe2O4 nanoparticles annealed at 600 °C (NFD@600), 800 °C (NFD@800), and 1000 °C (NFD@1000), respectively. The electromagnetic interference shielding performance of prepared nanocomposites of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NFD@600 or NFD@800 or NFD@1000) in polypropylene (PP) matrix engineered with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been investigated; the results indicated that the prepared nanocomposites consisted of smaller-sized nickel ferrite nanoparticles exhibited excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding characteristics. The total EMI shielding effectiveness (SET) for the prepared nanocomposites have been noticed to be 45.56, 36.43, and 35.71 dB for NFD@600-rGO-PP, NFD@800-rGO-PP, and NFD@1000-rGO-PP nanocomposites, respectively, at the thickness of 2 mm in microwave X-band range (8.2-12.4 GHz). The evaluated values of specific EMI shielding effectiveness (SSE) were 38.81, 32.79, and 31.73 dB·cm3/g, and the absolute EMI shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) values were 388.1, 327.9, and 317.3 dB·cm2/g for NFD@600-rGO-PP, NFD@800-rGO-PP, and NFD@1000-rGO-PP, respectively. The prepared lightweight and flexible sheets can be considered useful nanocomposites against electromagnetic radiation pollution.

Polypropylene Nanocomposite Filled with Spinel Ferrite NiFe2O4 Nanoparticles and In-Situ Thermally-Reduced Graphene Oxide for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Application

Herein, we presented electromagnetic interference shielding characteristics of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles-in-situ thermally-reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-polypropylene nanocomposites with the variation of reduced graphene oxide content. The structural, morphological, magnetic, and electromagnetic parameters and mechanical characteristics of fabricated nanocomposites were investigated and studied in detail. The controllable composition of NiFe2O4-RGO-Polypropylene nanocomposites exhibited electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) with a value of 29.4 dB at a thickness of 2 mm. The enhanced EMI shielding properties of nanocomposites with the increase of RGO content could be assigned to enhanced attenuation ability, high conductivity, dipole and interfacial polarization, eddy current loss, and natural resonance. The fabricated lightweight NiFe2O4-RGO-Polypropylene nanocomposites have potential as a high performance electromagnetic interference shielding nanocomposite.

Sonochemical synthesis of Gd3+ doped CoFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles and its physical properties

In this work, a facile and green method for gadolinium doped cobalt ferrite (CoFe_2-xGd_xO₄; x=0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) nanoparticles by using ultrasonic irradiation was reported. The impact of Gd³⁺ substitution on the structural, magnetic, dielectric and electrical properties of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles was evaluated. The sonochemically synthesized spinel ferrite nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) study confirmed the formation of single phase spinel ferrite of CoFe_2-xGd_xO₄ nanoparticles. XRD results also revealed that ultrasonic irradiation seems to be favourable to achieve highly crystalline single crystal phase gadolinium doped cobalt ferrite nanoparticles without any post annealing process. Fourier Transform Infrared and Raman Spectra confirmed the formation of spinel ferrite crystal structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the impact of Gd³⁺ substitution in CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles on cation distribution at the tetrahedral and octahedral site in spinel ferrite crystal system. The electrical properties showed that the Gd³⁺ doped cobalt ferrite (CoFe_2-xGd_xO₄; x=0.20) exhibit enhanced dielectric constant (277 at 100Hz) and ac conductivity (20.2×10^-9S/cm at 100Hz). The modulus spectroscopy demonstrated the impact of Gd³⁺ substitution in cobalt ferrite nanoparticles on grain boundary relaxation time, capacitance and resistance. Magnetic property measurement revealed that the coercivity decreases with Gd³⁺ substitution from 234.32Oe (x=0.00) to 12.60Oe (x=0.05) and further increases from 12.60Oe (x=0.05) to 68.62Oe (x=0.20). Moreover, saturation magnetization decreases with Gd³⁺ substitution from 40.19emu/g (x=0.00) to 21.58emu/g (x=0.20). This work demonstrates that the grain size and cation distribution in Gd³⁺ doped cobalt ferrite nanoparticles synthesized by sonochemical method, is effective in controlling the structural, magnetic, and electrical properties, and can be find very promising applications.

The enhanced magnetorheological performance of carbonyl iron suspensions using magnetic Fe3O4/ZHS hybrid composite sheets

The facile two-step microwave-assisted synthesis of Fe₃O₄/ZHS hybrid composite sheets with 2D morphology considerably improves the MR performance and suspension redispersibility.

1-(1-Adamantylmeth-yl)-1H-benzimidazole

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(18)H(22)N(2), contains two independent mol-ecules which differ slightly with respect to the torsion angles involving the atoms joining the adamantyl and benzimidazole groups. The bond angles in the adamantane cage vary within the range 108.27 (9)-110.55 (10)°. The benzimidazole ring system in both mol-ecules is essentially planar, the maximum deviations from the best planes being 0.0134 (15) and 0.0229 (14) Å. In the crystal, weak C-H⋯π inter-actions link the molecules.

Ultraviolet photoinduced weak bonds in aryl-substituted polysilanes

The susceptibility of aryl-substituted polysilylenes to photodegradation by ultraviolet (UV) radiation is examined on the prototypical materials poly[methyl(phenyl)silylene] (PMPSi) and poly[(biphenyl-4-yl)methylsilylene] (PBMSi). We extend the scope of our last paper (Schauer et al 2004 Polym. Degrad. Stabil. 84 383) with the elucidation of the degradation mechanisms for two different degradation wavelengths: 266 and 355 nm. The main purpose of this paper was to study photoluminescence (PL) after major degradation, predominantly in long-wavelength range 400-600 nm, studying the disorder, dangling bonds (DBs) and weak bonds (WBs) created by the degradation process. We claim that the PL of the 500-600 nm band is related to the existence of WBs on the Si chain and originates in the σ(*)-σ exciton migration at room temperature by diffusion, free electron-hole formation, trapping in WBs and subsequent radiative recombination by tunnelling. Increase of the normalized PL 520-540 nm band after UV degradation can be then evaluated as the increase of the density of states (DOS) of WBs. The efficiency of the WB creation in PMPSi is greater for 266 nm irradiation, supporting the notion of the suppressed exciton transport compared to the less energetical photon of 355 nm, where the WB creation is lowered due to the exciton migration to longer segments and/or already existing defects. For PBMSi the WB creation kinetics for 355 nm degradation is similar to that of PMPSi. The 266 nm degradation results then support the model calculations of DB and WB reconstruction in the more rigid Si skeleton.
