Abstract
Novel hydrophilic and color-changeable single chameleon luminophores composed of Tb(III)/Sm(III) nona-nuclear clusters [TbxSm9-x(Sal-PEG-n)16(μ-OH)10]+(NO3)- (x = 1, 2, 3, and 9; Sal-PEG-n: salicylate polyethylene glycolmethylester, n = 2 and 4) are reported for water mapping measurements. Their characteristic sandglass structures and aggregates were analyzed using X-ray single crystal analysis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The green- and yellow-luminescence of [Tb3Sm6(Sal-PEG-4)16(μ-OH)]+(NO3)- in water were observed at 20 and 50 °C, respectively. The ratio-metric luminescence analysis using green Tb(III) and orange Sm(III) emission bands is a promising candidate for exact temperature distribution measurements in fluid dynamics. The effective temperature-sensing property based on the competitive intramolecular energy transfer processes between Tb(III)-to-ligand and Tb(III)-to-Sm(III) in a non-a-nuclear cluster is explained using temperature-dependent kinetic analyses in the excited state.

Abstract
Lanthanide luminescent MOF materials show excellent luminescent properties. However, obtaining lanthanide luminescent MOFs with high quantum yield is a challenging research. A novel bismuth-based metal-organic framework [Bi(SIP)(DMF)2] was constructed by solvothermal method, utilizing 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (NaH2SIP) and Bi(NO3)3·5H2O. Thereafter, doped MOFs (Ln-Bi-SIP, Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, Dy, Yb, Nd, Er) with different luminescent properties have been obtained by in situ doping with different lanthanide metal ions, among which Eu-Bi-SIP, Tb-Bi-SIP, Sm-Bi-SIP, and Dy-Bi-SIP have high quantum yield. What is special is that the doping amount of Ln3+ ions is very low, and the doped MOF can achieve high luminescence quantum yields. EuTb-Bi-SIP obtained by Eu3+/Tb3+ codoping and Dy-Bi-SIP exhibit good temperature sensing performance over a wide temperature range with the maximum sensitivity Sr of 1.6%·K-1 (433 K) and 2.6%·K-1, respectively (133 K), while the cycling experiments also show good repeatability in the assay temperature range. Finally, considering the practical application value, EuTb-Bi-SIP was blended with an organic polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce a thin film, which shows different color changes at different temperatures.

Abstract
Felodipine is an effective drug to treat hypertension, but its abuse can cause bardycardia. It is significant to develop highly sensitive detection platform for felodipine to enable the efficient treatment of hypertension diseases. In this work, to highly efficiently detect felodipine, multi-emission near-infrared (NIR) hierarchical magnetic core-shell lanthanide-MOF nanoparticles, namely Nd-MOF@Yb-MOF@SiO2@Fe3O4 (NIR-1), has been synthesized by layer-by-layer (LBL) method. LBL method can adjust the optical properties of NIR-1 and expose more active sites to improve sensitivity in detection process. NIR-1 has near-infrared luminescence emission, which can efficiently avoid the interference of autofluorescence in biological tissues. Photo-luminescent (PL) experiments also reveal that NIR-1 could be used as a near-infrared ratiometric luminescent sensor for felodipine detection with high selectivity and sensitivity, the low of detection limit (LOD) is 6.39 nM in felodipine detection, which is also performed using real biological samples. In addition, NIR-1 can be used as a ratiometric thermometer could also be applied in the temperature sensing from 293 K to 343 K. Finally, detection mechanisms for felodipine and temperature sensing performance based on near-infrared (NIR) emission were also investigated and discussed in detail.

Abstract
Several isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks, viz. [Ln(DCHB)1.5phen]n (Ln-MOFs, where Ln = Eu for 1, Tb for 2, Sm for 3 and Dy for 4), are successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal reactions of 4'-di(4-carboxylphenoxy)hydroxyl-2, 2'-bipyridyl (H2DCHB) and lanthanide nitrates as well as chelator 1,10-phenantroline (phen). These structures are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the representative Ln-MOF 1 is a fivefold interpenetrated framework with the uncoordinated Lewis base N sites form DCHB2- ligands. The photoluminescence research studies reveal that Ln-MOFs 1-4 exhibit characteristic fluorescent emissions from ligand-induced lanthanide Ln(III) ions, while the single-component emission spectra of Ln-MOF 4 are all located in a white region under different excitations. The absence of coordinated water and the interpenetration property of the structures are conducive to the structure rigidity, and the results display that Ln-MOF 1 has high thermal/chemical stabilities in common solvents and a wide pH range as well as the boiling water. Notably, luminescent sensing studies reveal that Ln-MOF 1 with prominent fluorescence properties can perform in highly sensitive and selective sensing of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) in aqueous systems (KSV = 562.8 L·mol-1; LOD = 4.6 × 10-4 M), which can potentially establish a detection platform for the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma via multiquenching mechanisms. Moreover, the 1@MMMs sensing membranes comprised of Ln-MOF 1 and a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer can also be facilely developed for VMA detection in aqueous media, suggesting the enhanced convenience and efficiency of practical sensing applications.

Abstract
Three principal factors may influence the final structure of coordination polymers (CPs): (i) the nature of the ligand, (ii) the type and coordination number of the metal center, and (iii) the reaction conditions. Further, flexible carboxylate aliphatic ligands have been widely employed as building blocks for designing and synthesizing CPs, resulting in a diverse array of materials with exciting architectures, porosities, dimensionalities, and topologies as well as an increasing number of properties and applications. These ligands show different structural features, such as torsion angles, carbon backbone number, and coordination modes, which affect the desired products and so enable the generation of polymorphs or crystalline phases. Additionally, due to their large coordination numbers, using 4f and 5f metals as coordination centers combined with aliphatic ligands increases the possibility of obtaining different crystal phases. Additionally, by varying the synthetic conditions, we may control the production of a specific solid phase by understanding the thermodynamic and kinetic factors that influence the self-assembly process. This revision highlights the relationship between the structural variety of CPs based on flexible carboxylate aliphatic ligands and f-elements (lanthanide and actinides) and their outstanding luminescent properties such as solid-state emissions, sensing, and photocatalysis. In this sense, we present a structural analysis of the CPs reported with the oxalate ligand, as the one rigid ligand of the family, and other flexible dicarboxylate linkers with –CH2– spacers. Additionally, the nature of the luminescence properties of the 4f or 5f-CPs is analyzed, and finally, we present a novel set of CPs using a glutarate-derived ligand and samarium, with the formula [2,2′-bipyH][Sm(HFG)2 (2,2′-bipy) (H2O)2]•(2,2′-bipy) (α-Sm) and [2,2′-bipyH][Sm(HFG)2 (2,2′-bipy) (H2O)2] (β-Sm).

Abstract
A new coordination polymer, poly[(acetato)aqua(μ3-phthalato)europium(III)], [Eu(C8H4O4)(CH3O2)(H2O)] n or [EuIII(phth)(OAc)(H2O)] (phth2- = phthalate and OAc- = acetate) was synthesized and characterized, revealing it to be a supra-molecular assembly of one-dimensional [EuIII(phth)(OAc)(H2O)] chains. Each chain is built up of edge-sharing distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic TPRS-{EuIIIO9} building motifs and assembled in a regular fashion through hydrogen-bonding and aromatic π-π inter-actions. The fully deprotonated phth2- ligand was shown to be an effective sensitizer, promoting the characteristic 5 D 0→7 FJ (J = 1-4) emissions of EuIII even in the presence of the non-sensitizing OAc- group.

Abstract
In recent years, luminescent materials doped with Ln3+ ions have attracted much attention for their application as optical thermometers based on both downshifting and upconversion processes. This study presents research done on the development of highly sensitive optical thermometers in the physiological temperature range based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films doped with two series of visible Ln3+ complexes (Ln3+ =Tb3+ , Eu3+ , and Sm3+ ) and SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) coated with these PMMA films. The best performing PMMA film doped with Tb3+ and Eu3+ complexes was the PMMA[TbEuL1 tppo]1 film (L1 =4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butadionate; tppo=triphenylphosphine oxide), which showed good temperature sensing of Sr =4.21 % K-1 at 313 K, whereas for the PMMA films doped with Tb3+ and Sm3+ complexes the best performing was the PMMA[TbSmL2 tppo]3 film (L2 =4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3-butadionate), with Sr =3.64 % K-1 at 313 K. Additionally, SiO2 NPs coated with the best performing films from each of the series of PMMA films (Tb-Eu and Tb-Sm) and their temperature-sensing properties were studied in water, showing excellent performance in the physiological temperature range (PMMA[TbEuL1 tppo]1@SiO2 : Sr =3.84 % °C at 20 °C; PMMA[TbSmL2 tppo]3@SiO2 : Sr =3.27 % °C at 20 °C) and the toxicity of these nanoparticles on human cells was studied, showing that they were nontoxic.

Abstract
Theoretical description of a four-level system for luminescent thermometry was proposed. Based on this description, the sensitivity was proved not to exceed Sr =|E23 - E12|/T2, where T is the temperature and |E23 - E12| is the absolute energy difference between the excited state energy gaps. The analysis was verified for the terbium-europium coordination compounds, the most studied class of four-level thermometry systems, which revealed that most of the examples fall within either this theory or represent three-level systems, where the ligand is not involved in the thermally-activated processes. From this description, it follows that the highest Sr can be reached either when the triplet state is not involved or when the ligand triplet state is very high, which in the case of terbium-europium coordination compounds means exceeding 26 800 cm-1.

Abstract
The development of novel 2D materials, due to the promising applications they have enabled through their unique properties, has attracted increasingly more research interest. In this regard, novel dual-emitting coordination polymer nanosheets were developed by doping Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions into the nanostructures of the [Ba(DPA)2(H2O)2] n (DPA = dipicolinic acid) coordination polymer (BCP). Single crystal x-ray crystallography revealed that BCP is a 1D coordination polymer and its three-dimensional supramolecular architecture is constructed with a relatively strong hydrogen bonding in the ac crystallographic plane and weak non-covalent interactions along the b axis. Using energetic ultrasound irradiations, synthesis of nanoscale BCP along with the unzipping of the weak interactions between the ac layers was accomplished. The resulting BCP nanosheets was used as the host lattice and was doped with Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions. Remarkably, the sensing ability of both Eu3+ and Tb3+ doped coordination polymer (Ln@BCP) nanosheets towards temperature and the DPA anthrax biomarker were investigate. The high relative sensitivity value of 2.42% K-1 and their reusability, makes Ln@BCP nanosheets an ideal candidate for the nanothermometry. They also exhibited high selective detection characteristics towards the DPA anthrax biomarker with a 0.03 nM detection limit. Therefore, Ln@BCP nanosheets can also be considered as an efficient multi-responsive optical sensor.

Abstract
Ongoing demand for accurate self-calibrated noninvasive thermometers for micro-/nano-scale applications, particular biomedical diagnosis, is driving the development of temperature sensors. Here a new type of lanthanide metal-organic framework having near-infrared absorption and near-infrared emission features is presented, and it is based on efficient Nd3+ -to-Yb3+ energy transfer in 808 nm photoexcitation. The results show that the ratiometric parameter of Nd0.5 Yb0.5 TPTC (TPTC= 1,1':4',1''-terphenyl]-3,3'',5,5''-tetracarboxylic acid) can deliver good exponential-type luminescence response to temperature in the physiological regime (293-328 K) with high relative sensitivity and accurate temperature resolution, as well as good biocompatibility and chemical stability. Such lanthanide-based materials are especially useful in biomedical applications.

Abstract
A novel three-dimensional microporous framework, [Tb(pddb)phen(ox)0.5] n (Tb-MOF), was synthesized hydrothermally with V-shaped 4,4'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2pddb), oxalate (ox), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen). The framework of Tb-MOF features one-dimensional channels functionalized with pyridine-N Lewis base groups and the absence of coordinated and lattice water molecules in the structure. The Tb-MOF exhibits high thermostability (up to 385 °C) and chemical stability in a wide pH range (4-11) and common organic solvents as well as boiling water. The luminescence investigations of the Tb-MOF in common solvents, water with different pH values, and inorganic ions were performed. Results show that the Tb-MOF has high luminescence stability and the ability to probe Fe3+ ions. Significantly, the Tb-MOF with particularly high water stability can be first developed as a highly selective and sensitive luminescent sensor for the biomarker 2-thiazolidinethione-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) via fluorescence quenching. The low detection limit (1 ppm), reusability, and high antidisturbance together make the Tb-MOF become a promising sensor for the practical detection of TTCA in urine systems, and for the first time realize the detection of urinary TTCA through fluorescence spectrometry based on an Ln-MOF sensor.

Abstract
Reactions in water of lanthanide chlorides with the sodium salt of 1,4-carboxyphenylboronic acid lead to two series of isostructural compounds with respective general chemical formulas [Ln(cpb)3(H2O)2]∞ for Ln = La or Ce and [Ln(cpbOH)(H2O)2·(cpb)]∞ for Ln = Pr-Lu (except Pm) plus Y. Heterolanthanide coordination polymers that are isostructural to the second series have been synthesized, and their photophysical properties have been studied. This study evidences that it is possible to design multiemissive lanthanide-based coordination polymers that could find their application as multigauge luminescent thermometric probes.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of six new lanthanide networks [Ln(L)(ox)(H2O)] with Ln = Eu3+, Gd3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+ and Yb3+ is reported. They were synthesized by solvo-ionothermal reaction of lanthanide nitrate Ln(NO3)3·xH2O with the 1,3-bis(carboxymethyl)imidazolium [HL] ligand and oxalic acid (H2ox) in a water/ethanol solution. The crystal structure of these compounds has been solved on single crystals and the magnetic and luminescent properties have been investigated relying on intrinsic properties of the lanthanide ions. The synthetic strategy has been extended to mixed lanthanide networks leading to four isostructural networks of formula [Tb1- x Eu x (L)(ox)(H2O)] with x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10. These materials were assessed as luminescent ratiometric thermometers based on the emission intensities of ligand, Tb3+ and Eu3+. The best sensitivities were obtained using the ratio between the emission intensities of Eu3+ (5D0→7F2 transition) and of the ligand as the thermometric parameter. [Tb0.97Eu0.03(L)(ox)(H2O)] was found to be one of the best thermometers among lanthanide-bearing coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks, operative in the physiological range with a maximum sensitivity of 1.38%·K-1 at 340 K.
