Abstract
Using the Schiff base ligand H2L-pyra (N'-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazonamide) with multiple dentate sites, the trinuclear DyIII-based complex [Dy3(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)2(CH3COO)3]·2H2O (1) was synthesized. By analyzing the fragmented assembly process and fine-tuning the bridging anions, complex [Dy4(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)4(NO3)2(H2O)2]·8H2O (2) with different nuclear numbers was successfully synthesized. Magnetic studies demonstrated that 1 did not exhibit magnetic relaxation behavior under the external field; however, 2 exhibited zero-field single-molecule magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier (Ueff) of 197.44 K. This is attributed to the improved anisotropy of the single ion after the normalization of the crystal structure, thus realizing the molecular magnetic switching. Moreover, magnetic dilution analysis of 2 demonstrated that the weak magnetic interaction between metal ions inhibited the occurrence of quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), resulting in high-performance single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. The reasons for the magnetic difference between these two complexes were analyzed using ab initio calculation and magneto-structural correlations. This study provides a reasonable prediction of the ideal configuration of the approximately parallelogram DyIII-based SMMs, thus offering an effective approach for synthesizing Dy4 complexes with excellent properties.

Abstract
Two pairs of homochiral Dy(III) tetranuclear cluster complexes derived from (+)/(-)-3-trifluoroacetyl camphor (D-Htfc/L-Htfc), [Dy4(OH)2(L1)4(D-tfc)2(DMF)2]·4DMF (D-1) [H2L1 = (E)-2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)phenol)]/[Dy4(OH)2(L1)4(L-tfc)2(DMF)2]·4DMF (L-1) and [Dy4(OH)2(L2)4(D-tfc)2(DMF)2]·2H2O·3MeCN (D-2) [H2L2 = (E)-3-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)naphthalen-2-ol]/[Dy4(OH)2(L2)4(L-tfc)2(DMF)2]·2H2O·3MeCN (L-2), were synthesized at room temperature, which have a Dy4 parallelogram-like core. The magnetic studies revealed that D-1 exhibits single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior under zero dc magnetic field, and its magnetic relaxation has a distinct Raman process in addition to the Orbach process, with the Ueff/k value of 57.5 K and the C value of 28.27 s-1K-2.14; while D-2 displays dual magnetic relaxation behavior at 0 Oe field, with the Ueff/k value 114.8 K for the slow relaxation process (SR) and the C value of 10.656 s-1K-5.80 for the fast relaxation process (FR), respectively. Theoretical calculations indicated that the conjugated groups (phenyl vs naphthyl) of the Schiff base bridging ligands (H2L1 and H2L2) significantly affect the intramolecular magnetic interactions between the Dy3+ ions and ultimately lead to different relaxations. Furthermore, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements showed that these two pairs of Dy4 enantiomers exhibit strong room temperature magneto-optical Faraday effects; notably, increasing the conjugated group on the Schiff base bridging ligand is beneficial to enhancing the magneto-optical Faraday effects.

Abstract
Cyano-bridged 4d-4f molecular nanomagnets have re-called increasing research interests in molecular magnetism since they offer more possibilities in achieving novel nanomagnets with versatile structures and magnetic interactions. In this work, four β-diketone ligands bearing different substitution N-sites were designed and synthesized, namely 1-(2-pyridyl)-3-(3-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL1 ), 1,3-Bis (3-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL2 ), 1-(4-pyridyl)-3-(3-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL3 ), and 1,3-Bis (4-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL4 ), to tune the magnetic relaxation behaviors of cyano-bridged {DyIII MoV } systems. By reacting with DyCl3 ⋅ 6H2 O and K4 Mo(CN)8 ⋅ 2H2 O, four cyano-bridged complexes, namely {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL1 )2 (H2 O)3 ]} ⋅ 6H2 O (1), {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL2 )(H2 O)3 (CH3 OH)]}2 ⋅ 2CH3 OH ⋅ 3H2 O (2), {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL3 )(H2 O)2 (CH3 OH)] ⋅ H2 O}n (3), and {[Dy[MoV (CN)8 ](HL4 )2 (H2 O)3 ]} ⋅ 2H2 O⋅CH3 OH (4) were obtained. Structural analyses revealed that 1 and 4 are binuclear complexes, 2 has a tetragonal structure, and 3 exhibits a stair-like polymer chain structure. The DyIII ions in all complexes have eight-coordinated configurations with the coordination spheres DyO7 N1 for 1 and 4, DyO6 N2 for 2, and DyO5 N3 for 3. Magnetic measurements indicate that 1 is a zero-field single-molecule magnet (SMM) and complexes 2-4 are field-induced SMMs, with complex 4 featuring a two-step relaxation process. The magnetic characterizations and ab initio calculations revealed that changing the N-sites in the β-diketone ligands can effectively alter the structures and magnetic properties of cyano-bridged 4d-4f nanomagnets by adjusting the coordination environments of the DyIII centers.

Abstract
The solvothermal reactions of LnCl3·6H2O and MCl2·6H2O (M = Co, Ni) with 2,2'-diphenol (H2L1) and 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline (HL2) gave three 3d-4f heterometallic wheel-like nano-clusters [Ln7M6(L1)6(L2)6(µ3-OH)6(OCH3)6Cl(CH3CN)6]Cl2·xH2O (Ln = Dy, M = Co, x = 3 for 1; Ln = Dy, M = Ni, x = 0 for 2; Ln = Tb, M = Ni, x = 0 for 3) with similar cluster structure. The innermost Ln(III) ion is encapsulated in a planar Ln6 ring which is further embedded in a chair-conformation M6 ring, constructing a Russian doll-like 3d-4f cluster wheel Ln(III)⸦Ln6⸦M6. 2 and 3 show obvious slow magnetic relaxation behavior with negligible opening of the magnetic hysteresis loop. Such a Russian doll-like 3d-4f cluster wheel with the lanthanide disc isolated by transition metallo-ring is rarely reported.

Abstract
The work in this report describes the syntheses, crystal structures, dc/ac magnetic behaviour, and theoretical calculations (both ab initio CASSCF and DFT) of three defect dicubane/planar butterfly type tetradysprosium(III) compounds of compositions [DyIII4L4(μ3-OH)2(carboxylate)2(dmf)2] (carboxylate = formate (1), acetate (2), propionate (3)), where H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylideneamino)phenol. In the butterfly type structures, two DyIII centres (Dyb) occupy the body positions while two other (Dyw) units occupy the wing positions. SHAPE analyses reveal that the coordination geometries of the Dyb and Dyw centres, both octacoordinated, are triangular dodecahedron (TDD) and square antiprism (SAPR), respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements give an indication of weak antiferromagnetic interactions and variable-field magnetization measurements reveal strong anisotropy in all the three compounds. The variable-temperature/frequency in-phase/out-of-phase AC susceptibility data reveal that all these three compounds are SMMs with two relaxation channels under zero dc field; slow relaxation (SR) and fast relaxation (FR) processes could be assigned to the SAPR (Dyw) and TDD (Dyb) metal centres, respectively. The simulated Ueff and τ0 values are: 49.0 cm-1 and 1.76 × 10-7 s for 1, 30.3 cm-1 and 1.51 × 10-8 s for 2 and 23.4 cm-1 and 9.64 × 10-7 s for 3. Furthermore, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations reveal that the ground state of DyIII centres are axial in nature with a dominating contribution from mJ = |±15/2>. The magnetization relaxation occurs via the first excited KD resulting in the large computed blocking barrier of Dyw (SAPR) centres compared to that of the Dyb (TDD) centres which corroborates the experimental measurements. The exchange parameters obtained from DFT calculations are generally in line with those obtained from the fitting of χMT vs. T in POLY_ANISO calculations. Interesting structural and magneto-structural correlations have been found, which are the major outcomes of this investigation.

Abstract
A dinuclear complex with the formula Dy2L2(H2L)Cl2(EtOH)2 (Dy2) has been synthesized by reacting DyCl3·H2O with a ligand H2L (H2L = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)) using ethanol as the solvent. Its crystal structure can be viewed as a dimer of two Dy(III) fragments, where each Dy(III) site shows a N2O6Cl coordination sphere with a pentagonal bipyramid geometry (D5h). Magnetic measurements reveal that Dy2 behaves as a single-ion magnet (SIM) under a zero field. When the field is applied, the ac magnetic susceptibilities show double and triple peaks under high (≥600 Oe) and low (<600 Oe) dc fields, respectively. In contrast to the common double relaxation pathways in SIMs, such multiple and intricate relaxation pathways have not been reported yet in the previous literature. In this work, by experimental analysis of the ac signals, we attribute the three slow relaxation pathways to quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM), intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction and spin reversal, respectively. In addition, ab initio calculations are used to elucidate the magnetic behaviours of Dy2. Overall, our work indicates that the interpretation of the relaxation process using double relaxation pathways is incomplete and difficult in previously reported literature.

Abstract
A dinuclear dysprosium cluster [Dy2(NO3)4(H2O)2(L)2]·2CH3CN was successfully prepared by employing HL (HL = 2,6-dimethoxyphenol) and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O in a mixture of CH3OH and CH3CN. The conversion of this Dy2 compound by reaction with additional deprotonated ligand generated a Dy9 cluster [Dy9(μ4-OH)2(μ3-OH)8(μ2-OCH3)4(NO3)8(H2O)8(L)4](OH)·2H2O with the well-known "diabolo" topology. Magnetic investigation revealed that both of the clusters exhibit typical SMM characteristics, and variable magnetic relaxation with the energy barrier changing from 217.87 K to 9.24 K along with the transition from a dinuclear dysprosium cluster to a nonanuclear one. Ab initio calculations further confirm the corresponding structure-activity relationships that originate the different magnetic behaviours. This design may afford a feasible strategy for modulating the magnetic relaxation dynamics of polynuclear systems.

Abstract
The unique family of coordination polymers [Ln4(OH)2(piv)10(H2O)2]∞ of 11 lanthanides (Ln = La-Er) has been prepared by a simple solution method based on controlled hydrolysis. The ribbon-like polymeric structure consisting of connected tetranuclear clusters and supported by pivalate ligands and a framework of H-bonds has been revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. While the compounds demonstrate similar PXRD patterns and unit cell parameters, the joint single-crystal XRD and pair distribution function data suggest the significant local structure change along the lanthanide series. The compounds exist as two packing polymorphs (α and β) with similar ribbon geometry, but different supramolecular arrangement of the ribbons. Dehydration of either polymorph does not disturb the tetranuclear core but leads to a translational symmetry loss along the ribbon and a transformation of the 3D-ordered crystal into a 2D-ordered mesostructure. Rehydration of the mesostructure leads to the β polymorph (except La and Ce), allowing the deliberate switching between the polymorphs via dehydration-rehydration evidenced by means of powder X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Ab initio calculations reveal significant magnetic anisotropy of Ln3+ ions with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions within tetranuclear [Ln4(OH)2(piv)10(H2O)2] species. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated antiferromagnetic coupling, slow magnetic relaxation for Dy, Ho, and Er complexes, and field-induced single-chain magnetism for the Dy compound.

Abstract
Two dimeric Ln–Cr clusters with formula {Ln(H2O)8[Ln6Cr3(L)6(CH3COO)6(μ3-OH)12(H2O)12]}·(ClO4)6·xH2O (Ln = Gd, x = 35 for 1 and Ln = Dy, x = 45 for 2, HL = 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid) were obtained by a ligand-controlled hydrolytic method with a mixed ligand system (2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid and acetate). Single crystal structure analysis showed that two trigonal bipyramids of [Gd3Cr2(μ3-OH)6]9+ worked as building blocks in constructing the metal-oxo cluster core of [Gd6Cr3(μ3-OH)12]15+ by sharing a common top – a Cr3+ ion. Additionally, compound 1 forms a three-dimensional framework with a one-dimensional nanopore channel along the a-axis through a hydrogen-bond interaction between the cationic cluster core and the free mononuclear cation [Gd(H2O)8]3+ and the π-bond interactions of the pyrazine groups on the two cationic cluster cores. Magnetic calculations indicated a weak ferromagnetic coupling interaction for Gd⋯Gd and Gd⋯Cr in compound 1, with its magnetic entropy change (−ΔSm) reaching 21.1 J kg−1 K−1 at 5 K, 7 T, while compound 2 displayed an obvious frequency-dependency at Hdc = 2000 Oe. Two decanuclear Ln–Cr clusters Ln7Cr3 were obtained, which formed a three-dimensional framework with one-dimensional nanopore channel through hydrogen-bond and π-bond interactions. Gd7Cr3 had a magnetic entropy change of 21.1 J kg−1 K−1 at 5 K, 7 T.![]()

Abstract
Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) hold promise for unmatched information storage density as well as for applications in quantum computing and spintronics. To date, the most successful SMMs have been organometallic lanthanide complexes. However, their surface immobilization, one of the requirements for device fabrication and commercial application, remains challenging due to the sensitivity of the magnetic properties to small changes in the electronic structure of the parent SMM. Thus, finding controlled approaches to SMM surface deposition is a timely challenge. In this contribution we apply the concept of isolobality to identify siloxides present at the surface of partially dehydroxylated silica as a suitable replacement for archetypal ligand architectures in organometallic SMMs. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that isolated siloxide anchoring sites not only enable successful immobilization but also lead to a 2 orders of magnitude increase in magnetization relaxation times.

Abstract
The aggregation and formation of heterometallic nanoclusters usually involves a variety of complex self-assembly processes; thus, the exploration of their assembly mechanisms through process tracking is more challenging than that for homometallic nanoclusters. We explored here the effect of solvent on the formation of heterometallic clusters, which gave two heterometallic nanoclusters, [Dy2Co8(μ3-OCH3)2(L)4(HL)2(OAc)2(NO3)2(CH3CN)2]·CH3CN·H2O (1) and [Dy4Co6(L)4(HL)2(OAc)6(OCH2CH2OH)2(HOCH2CH2OH)(H2O)]·9CH3CN (2), with the H3L ligand formed from the in situ condensation reaction of 3-amino-1,2-propanediol with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde in the presence of Co(OAc)2·4H2O and Dy(NO)3·6H2O. It is worth noting that the skeleton of cluster 1 has a high stability under high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) conditions with a gradually increasing energy of the ion source. Cluster 2 underwent a multistep fragmentation even under a zero ion-source voltage for the measurement of HRESI-MS. Further analysis showed that cluster 2 underwent a possible fragmentation mechanism of Dy4Co6L6 → Dy2Co6L5/DyL → DyCo2L3/DyCo2L → DyL/Co2L2. Most notably, the species emerging in the formation process of cluster 1 were tracked using time-dependent HRESI-MS, from which we proposed its possible formation mechanism of H2L → Co2L2 → Co2DyL2/Co3L2 → Co3DyL2 → Co4DyL2 → Co5Dy2L4 → Co8Dy2L6. As far as we know, it is the first time to track the formation process of Dy-Co heterometallic clusters through HRESI-MS with the proposed assembly mechanism. The magnetic properties of the two titled DyIIIxCoII10-x (x = 2, 4) clusters were studied. Both of them exhibit slow magnetic relaxation, and 1 is a single-molecule magnet at zero direct-current field.

Abstract
The generation of two types of complexes with different topological connections and completely different structural types merely via the substitution effect is extremely rare, especially for -CH3 and -C2H5 substituents with similar physical and chemical properties. Herein, we used 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde, 1,2-cyclohexanediamine, and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O to react under solvothermal conditions (CH3OH:CH3CN = 1:1) at 80 °C to obtain the butterfly-shaped tetranuclear DyIII cluster [Dy4(L1)4(μ3-O)2(NO3)2] (Dy4, H2L1 = 6,6'-((1E,1'E)-(cyclohexane-1,3-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2-methoxyphenol)). The ligand H2L1 was obtained by the Schiff base in situ reaction of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine. In the Dy4 structure, (L1)2- has two different coordination modes: μ2-η1:η2:η1:η1 and μ4-η1:η2:η1:η1:η2:η1. The four DyIII ions are in two coordination environments: N2O6 (Dy1) and O9 (Dy2). The magnetic testing of cluster Dy4 without the addition of an external field revealed that it exhibited a clear frequency-dependent behavior. We changed 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde to 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde and obtained one case of a hydrogen-bonded helix framework, [DyL2(NO3)3]n·2CH3CN (Dy-HHFs, H2L2 = 6,6'-((1E,1'E)-(cyclohexane-1,3-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2-ethoxyphenol)), under the same reaction conditions. The ligand H2L2 was formed by the Schiff base in situ reaction of 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine. All DyIII ions in the Dy-HHFs structure are in the same coordination environment (O9). The twisted S-shaped (L2)2- ligand is linked by a Dy(III) ion to form a spiral chain. The spiral chain is one of the independent units that is interconnected to form Dy-HHFs through three strong hydrogen-bonding interactions. Magnetic studies show that Dy-HHFs exhibits single-ion-magnet behavior (Ueff = 68.59 K and τ0 = 1.10 × 10-7 s, 0 Oe DC field; Ueff = 131.5 K and τ0 = 1.22 × 10-7 s, 800 Oe DC field). Ab initio calculations were performed to interpret the dynamic magnetic performance of Dy-HHFs, and a satisfactory consistency between theory and experiment exists.

Abstract
The two mononuclear complexes of the formula [Dy(tta)3(L)] (1) and [Dy(hfac)3(L)] (2) (where tta- = 2-thenoytrifluoroacetylacetonate and hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were obtained from the coordination reaction of the Dy(tta)3·2H2O or Dy(hfac)3·2H2O units with the 1,10-phenantroline-5,6-dione ligand (L). Their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals, and they revealed a supramolecular assembly of tetramers through σ-π interactions. Both complexes displayed a Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior without an external applied magnetic field. Magnetic relaxation happened through Orbach, Raman and Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM). Wavefunction theory calculations were realized to rationalize the magnetic properties.

Abstract
In this study, four in situ hydro(solvo)thermal metal-ligand reactions, including oxidation (H2L1), C-C coupling (H4L2), nitration (H2L3), and condensation (HL4-6), based on bis[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl]methane (H2L0), in the presence of DyIII ions, were carried out. The in situ metal-ligand reaction gave six new ligands existing in eight novel DyIII coordination complexes, which were characterized by crystal structure, mass spectrometry, and magnetism.

Abstract
Three novel polyoxometalate (POM) clusters of K10Na10[Dy3(H2O)6Ni(H2O)(W3O11)(B-α-SbW9O33)3]·(H2O)45 (1), (NH4)5K4Na8[Dy3(H2O)6SbV(H2O)(W3O11)(B-α-SbW9O33)3]·(H2O)50 (2), and (NH4)9Na[Ni2(H2O)6(WO2)2(B-β-SbW9O33)2]·(H2O)24 (3) were successfully obtained using the same precursor under different ionic strength conditions. Structural analysis showed that compounds 1-3 possess discrepant structural characteristics in 1 M KCl, 1 M NH4Cl, and saturated NH4Cl, respectively. Among them, 2 is the first reported lanthanide cluster including both Sb3+ and Sb5+ in POM derivatives. Furthermore, the analysis of ac magnetic data proved that 1 and 2 embodied dramatic field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, and the effective barrier of 2 was estimated as Ueff/KB = 21.10 K based on the Orbach process. It was found that the structure and magnetic properties of POM materials can be regulated using an effective and satisfactory ionic strength-controlled strategy.

Abstract
The solvent-induced topological and structural diversities of two Co(II) complexes, namely, [Co(L)2(SCN)2] (Co1) and [Co2(L)2(SCN)(OAc)3] (Co2) (L = 8-methoxyquinoline), were comparatively analyzed. Certain proportions of L, Co(OAc)2·4H2O, and NaSCN were mixed and dissolved in CH3OH at 60 °C to obtain complex Co1. Complex Co2, an asymmetric dinuclear compound, was obtained by simply replacing CH3OH with CH3CN as the solvent. The Co(II) ion in complex Co1 was coordinated by the N4O2 mode provided by two L ligands and two SCN- anions. The two Co(II) ions in Co2 were in the N2O4 and NO5 coordination environment and were linked by two μ2-OAc- bridges and one rare μ3-OAc- bridge. Weak interaction analysis revealed that complexes Co1 and Co2 exhibited 6-connected shp and 14-connected fcu nets, respectively. Magnetic studies showed that Co1 demonstrated single-ion magnet behavior under 2000 Oe. These behaviors are indicative of clearly field-induced single-ion magnetic behavior with U eff = 34.7(2) K and τ0 = 2.7(2) × 10-7 s under 2000 Oe dc field, respectively. By contrast, Co2 lacked frequency dependence under zero-field conditions. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry indicated that two complexes were stable in N,N-dimethylformamide.

Abstract
Lanthanide ions when complexed by polyamino-polycarboxylate chelators form a class of compounds of paramount importance in several research and technological areas, particularly in the fields of magnetic resonance and molecular magnetism. Indeed, the gadolinium derivative is one of the most employed contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging while the dysprosium one belongs to a new generation of contrast agents for T2-weighted MRI. In molecular magnetism, Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) containing lanthanide ions have become readily popular in the chemistry and physics communities since record energy barriers to the reversal of magnetization were reported. The success of lanthanide complexes lies in their large anisotropy due to the contribution of the unquenched orbital angular momentum. However, only a few efforts have been made so far to understand how the f-orbitals can be influenced by the surrounding ligands. The outcomes have been rationalized using mere electrostatic perturbation models. In the archetype compound [Na{Dy(DOTA) (H2O)}]·4H2O (Na{DyDOTA}·4H2O) an unexpected easy axis of magnetization perpendicular to the pseudo-tetragonal axis of the molecule was found. Interestingly, a dependency of the orientation of the principal magnetization axis on the simple rotation of the coordinating apical water molecule (AWM) - highly relevant for MRI contrast - around the Dy-OAWM bond was predicted by ab initio calculations, too. However, such a behaviour has been contested in a subsequent paper justifying their conclusions on pure electrostatic assumptions. In this paper, we want to shed some light on the nature of the subtle effects induced by the water molecule on the magnetic properties of the DyDOTA archetype complex. Therefore, we have critically reviewed the structural models already published in the literature along with new ones, showing how the easy axis orientation can dangerously depend on the chosen model. The different computed behaviors of the orientation of the easy axis of magnetization have been rationalized as a function of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited doublet. Magneto-structural correlations together with a mapping of the electrostatic potential generated by the ligands around the Dy(iii) ion through a multipolar expansion have also been used to evidence and quantify the covalent contribution of the AWM orbitals.

Abstract
To better understand the factors determining the multi-step relaxation processes in polynuclear lanthanide single molecule magnets (SMMs), two Dy(iii)4 SMMs showing two-step relaxation processes were elaborately designed and investigated for their structure-dependent magnetic properties. Through targetedly fine-tuning the auxiliary ligand (from the anion of 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione to 2-acetylcyclopentanone) on specific Dy(iii) sites while retaining the same type of coordination atoms, one of the two relaxation processes shifted to higher temperature with an increase of energy barrier, which permits the unambiguous assignment of the relaxation processes to specific metal sites. Therefore, the present {Dy4} systems provide a good example to probe the factors determining the relaxation dynamics, and point to a simple way to optimize the magnetic performance of polynuclear dysprosium SMMs.

Abstract
The study of mononuclear lanthanide-based systems, where the observed Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) properties originate from the local magnetic anisotropy of the single lanthanide ion, has been extensively investigated in the literature. The case for polynuclear lanthanide SMMs becomes more challenging both experimentally and theoretically due to the complexity of such architectures involving interactions between the magnetic centers. Much interest was devoted to the study of the structural effect on the magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics. However, the understanding of the structural influence on those two factors remains a difficult task. To address this issue, a system containing two structurally related tetranuclear Dy(iii) SMMs, namely [Dy4(L)4(OH)2(DMF)4(NO3)2]·2(DMF)·(H2O) (1) and [Dy4(L)4(OH)2(DMF)2(NO3)2] (2) (H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)phenol), is introduced and investigated. Through modifying the ligands on the changeable coordination sites, the intramolecular magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics in these two Dy(iii)4 SMMs can be tuned. Both complexes exhibit slow relaxation of their magnetization with a relaxation barrier of 114 K for complex 2 while a blocking temperature below 2 K is observed for complex 1. Ab initio calculations reveal that changes in coordination numbers and geometries on the Dy(iii) sites can significantly affect the magnetic interactions as well as single-ion anisotropy. The combination of experimental work and ab initio calculations offers insight into the relationship between structures and magnetic properties and sheds light on the rational design of future polynuclear lanthanide SMMs with enhanced magnetic properties.

Abstract
In the search for new single molecule magnets (SMM), i.e., molecular systems that can retain their magnetization without the need to apply an external magnetic field, a successful strategy is to associate 3d and 4f ions to form molecular coordination clusters. In order to efficiently design such systems, it is necessary to chemically project both the magnetic building blocks and the resultant interaction before the synthesis. Lanthanide ions can provide the required easy axis magnetic anisotropy that hampers magnetization reversal. In the rare examples of 3d/4f SMMs containing CrIII ions, the latter turn out to act as quasi-isotropic anchors which can also interact via 3d-4f coupling to neighbouring Ln centres. This has been demonstrated in cases where the intramolecular exchange interactions mediated by CrIII ions effectively reduce the efficiency of tunnelling without applied magnetic field. However, describing such high nuclearity systems remains challenging, from both experimental and theoretical perspectives, because the overall behaviour of the molecular cluster is heavily affected by the orientation of the individual anisotropy axes. These are in general non-collinear to each other. In this article, we combine single crystal SQUID and torque magnetometry studies of the octanuclear [Cr4Dy4(μ3-OH)4(μ-N3)4(mdea)4(piv)8]·3CH2Cl2 single molecule magnet (piv=pivalate and mdea=N-methyldiethanol amine). These experiments allowed us to probe the magnetic anisotropy of this complex which displays slow magnetization dynamics due to the peculiar arrangement of the easy-axis anisotropy on the Dy sites. New ab initio calculations considering the entire cluster are in agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract
To develop new lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs), two new complexes of [Dy2(MeOH)2(HL1)2(NO3)2]·2MeOH (1) and [Dy6(μ3-OH)2(L2)2(HL2)2(H2L2)2Cl2(EtOH)2]Cl2·3EtOH·CH3CN (2) were obtained by reacting Dy(NO)3·6H2O with 3-amino-1,2-propanediol in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 1 and by reacting DyCl3·6H2O with 1,1-di(hydroxymethyl)ethylamine in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 2, respectively, in which the Schiff base ligands of 3-(((2-hydroxynaphthaen-1-yl)methylene)amino)-propane-1,2-diol (H3L1) and 2-(β-naphthalideneamino)-2-(hydroxylmethyl)-1-propanol (H3L2) were in situ formed. The two Dy(III) ions in 1 are linked by two Oalkoxy atoms of two (HL1)2- ligands to build a dinuclear skeleton. Complex 2 presents a nearly planar hexanuclear skeleton constructed from four edge-shared triangular Dy3 units with the two peripheral Dy3 units consolidated by two μ3-O bridges and the two central Dy3 units consolidated by one μ3-O bridge. Obviously, they exhibit a different topological arrangement resulting from the linkage of the Schiff base ligands. Both of them are typical SMMs under zero dc fields, with a Ueff/ kB value of 34 K for 1 and 40 K for 2, respectively. Multiple processes are involved in the relaxation processes of 1 and 2. The different SMM performances of the two titled complexes reveal a tuning effect of Schiff base ligands through tuning the coordination environments and topological arrangements of dysprosium(III) ions, which is supported by the theoretical calculations.
