Abstract
Three new metal complexes have been obtained from the reaction of a new polyamine (L) with Ni(II), Cu(II), and Co(II) ions. The X-ray structural analysis of the Cu(II) complex shows that the copper atom is in a very distorted square pyramidal environment, coordinated by five of the six nitrogen donor atoms of the potentially hexadentate ligand. To evaluate the biological potential of the ligand and the synthesized metal complexes, their binding behavior with DNA was studied by molecular modeling methods. The Molecular docking studies showed that the free ligand and its complexes were bound to the major groove of DNA. The antioxidant activities of the ligand and its metal complexes were also assessed, in vitro, using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. The synthesized compounds were tested for activity against lung carcinoma epithelial cells (A549) using the MTT cell viability assay. A comparative study of the IC50 values indicated that the Cu(II) complex exhibited the highest activity, while the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes showed more potent antiproliferative activity than the ligand. The antibacterial activities of the synthesized complexes were evaluated using micro-broth dilution and disk diffusion methods. The complexes showed greater antibacterial activity than the free ligand.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Here, we demonstrate a label-free dual optical response strategy for the detection of cytochrome c (Cyt c) with ultrahigh sensitivity using highly luminescent lanthanides containing inorganic-organic hybrid nanotubular sensor arrays. These sensor arrays are formed by the sequential incorporation of the photosensitizers 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) or 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), and trivalent lanthanide terbium ions (Tb3+) into sodium lithocholate (NaLC) nanotube templates. Our sensing platform relies on the detection and quantification of Cyt c in solution by providing dual photoluminescence quenching responses from the nanotubular hybrid arrays in the presence of Cyt c. The large quenching of the sensitized Tb3+ emission within the DHN/Phen-Tb3+-NaLC nanotubular sensor arrays caused by the strong binding of the photosensitizers to Cyt c provides an important signal response for the selective detection of Cyt c. This long-lived lanthanide emission response-based sensing strategy can be highly advantageous for the detection of Cyt c in a cellular environment eliminating background fluorescence and scattering signals through time-gated measurements. The DHN containing nanotubular sensor arrays (DHN-NaLC and DHN-Tb3+-NaLC) provide an additional quenching response characterized by a unique spectral valley splitting with quantized quenching dip on the DHN fluorescence emission. This spectral quenching dip resulting from efficient FRET between the protein bound DHN photosensitizer and the heme group of Cyt c serves as an important means for specific detection and quantification of Cyt c in the concentration range of 0-30 μM with a low detection limit of around 20 nM.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO1.5)8(LnO1.5)4(O)(C5H8O2)6(EtOH)2(CH3CN)2⋅2CH3CN (where Ln = Tb, 1; Tb/Eu, 2; and Gd, 3), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb3+ and Tb3+/Eu3+-related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions. Compound 3 is used to assess the energies of the triplet states of the acac ligand. For compound 1, theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy transfer and multiphonon rates indicate a thermal balance between the 5D4 Stark components, while the mixed Tb3+/Eu3+ analog 2, with a Tb:Eu ratio of 3:1, showcases intra-cluster Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer, calculated theoretically as a function of temperature. By utilizing the intensity ratio between the 5D4→7F5 (Tb3+) and 5D0→7F2 (Eu3+) transitions in the range 11-373 K, we demonstrate the realization of a ratiometric luminescent thermometer with compound 2, operating in the range 11-373 K with a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.0% K-1 at 373 K. These findings highlight the potential of cage-like silsesquioxanes as versatile materials for optical sensing-enabled applications.

Abstract
By incorporating photoreactive anthracene moieties into binuclear Dy2O2 motifs, we obtain two new compounds with the formulas [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)4] (1) and [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)2(CH3CN)2] (2), where HL is 4-methyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol and dmpma is dimethylphosphonomethylanthracene. Compound 1 contains face-to-face π-π interacted anthracene groups that meet the Schmidt rule for a [4 + 4] photocycloaddition reaction, while stacking of the anthracene groups in compound 2 does not meet the Schmidt rule. Compound 1 undergoes a reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation upon UV-light irradiation and thermal annealing, forming a one-dimensional coordination polymer of [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)2(dmpma2)]n (1UV). The process is concomitant with changes in the magnetic dynamics and photoluminescent properties. The spin-reversal energy barrier is significantly increased from 1 (55.9 K) to 1UV (116 K), and the emission color is changed from bright yellow for 1 to weak blue for 1UV. This is the first binuclear lanthanide complex that exhibits synergistic photocontrollable magnetic dynamics and photoluminescence. Ab initio calculations are conducted to understand the magnetostructural relationships of compounds 1, 1UV, and 2.

Abstract
A common criterion for designing performant single molecule magnets and pseudocontact shift tags is a large magnetic anisotropy. In this article we present a dysprosium complex chemically designed to exhibit strong easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy that is preserved in dichloromethane solution at room temperature. Our detailed theoretical and experimental studies on the magnetic properties allowed explaining several features typical of highly performant SMMs. Moreover, the NMR characterization shows remarkably large chemical shifts, outperforming the current state-of-the art PCS tags.

Abstract
The fine structure in the spectral lines of the visible fluorescence of Tb 3+ complexes are replaced by a single peak in the case of a singular molecular complex Tb(H 3 PTC) 3 , where H 4 PTC represents perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, and its emission wavelength depends on the film thickness. This single peak challenges the old creed that the f-orbital electrons of Tb 3+ are always protected from the influence of the surrounding atoms. We perform density functional theory calculations to show that the wavefunction of the ground state is localized and in addition, spin-polarized, and this facilitates fluorescent transitions under UV to the first excited state instead of the fundamental state. We discuss the possibility of making a spintronic device with the molecule, Tb(H 3 PTC) 3 .

Abstract
Lanthanide based single molecule magnets have recently become very promising systems for creating single molecule devices working at high temperatures (nitrogen boiling temperature). However, the variation of the direction of the anisotropy tensor as a function of the applied pressure still represents a quite unexplored field. Application of external pressure can be a promising method toward neat control of magnetic anisotropy and relaxation processes in the bulk phase. Required criteria for being eligible for such systems are as follows: the presence of first excited energy levels with significantly different orientations of its anisotropy tensor; sufficiently low energies of such levels so that they can mix with the ground state; and the possibility of tuning their energies by small geometrical perturbations. The archetype compound {Na[DyDOTA(H2O)]·4H2O} (1) (H4DOTA = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-N,N',N'',N'''-tetraacetic acid) fulfils all such criteria. A state-of-the-art in silico proof of concept study on the possibility of controlling the orientation of the anisotropy tensor as a function of pressure in [DyDOTA(H2O)]- by inducing different apical water molecule (AWM) orientations and/or DOTA-induced crystal field is presented.

Abstract
Seven-coordinate, pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) complexes [Ln(bbpen)Cl] and [Ln(bbppn)Cl], in which Ln = Tb3+ (products I and II), Eu3+ (III and IV), and Gd3+ (V and VI), with bbpen2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine and bbppn2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,2-propanediamine, were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements, and photoluminescence (steady-state and time-resolved) spectroscopy. Under a static magnetic field of 0.1 T, the Tb3+ complexes I and II revealed single-ion-magnet behavior. Also, upon excitation at 320 nm at 300 K, I and II presented very high absolute emission quantum yields (0.90 ± 0.09 and 0.92 ± 0.09, respectively), while the corresponding Eu3+ complexes III and IV showed no photoluminescence. Detailed theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy-transfer rates for the Tb3+ products indicated that both singlet and triplet ligand excited states contribute efficiently to the overall emission performance. The expressive quantum yields, QLnL, measured for I and II in the solid state and a dichloromethane solution depend on the excitation wavelength, being higher at 320 nm. Such a dependence was rationalized by computing the intersystem crossing rates (WISC) and singlet fluorescence lifetimes (τS) related to the population dynamics of the S1 and T1 levels. Thin films of product II showed high air stability and photostability upon continuous UV illumination, which allowed their use as downshifting layers in a green light-emitting device (LED). The prototypes presented a luminous efficacy comparable with those found in commercial LED coatings, without requiring encapsulation or dispersion of II in host matrixes. The results indicate that the PBP environment determined by the ethylenediamine (en)-based ligands investigated in this work favors the outstanding optical properties in Tb3+ complexes. This work presents a comprehensive structural, chemical, and spectroscopic characterization of two Tb3+ complexes of mixed-donor, en-based ligands, focusing on their outstanding optical properties. They constitute good molecular examples in which both triplet and singlet excited states provide energy to the Tb3+ ion and lead to high values of QLnL.
