Oxidation-Induced Differentially Selective Turn-On Fluorescence via Photoinduced Electron Transfer Based on a Ferrocene-Appended Coumarin-Quinoline Platform: Application in Cascaded Molecular Logic

Light-driven reversible charge transfers from ITO nanocrystals

The combination of semiconductors and redox active molecules for light-driven energy storage systems has emerged as a powerful solution for the exploitation of solar batteries. On account of this, transparent conductive oxide (TCO) nanocrystals (NCs) demonstrated to be interesting materials, thanks to the photo-induced charge accumulation enabling light harvesting and storage. The charge transfer process after light absorption, at the base of the proper use of these semiconductors, is a key step, often resulting in non-reversible transformations of the chemicals involved. However, if considering the photocharging through TCO NCs not only as a charge provider for the system but potentially as part of the storage role, the reversible transformation of the redox compound represents a crucial aspect. In this paper, we explore the possible interaction of indium tin oxide (ITO) NCs and typical redox mediators commonly employed in catalytic applications with a twofold scope of enhancing or supporting the light-induced charge accumulation on the metal oxide NC side and controlling the reversibility of the whole process. The work presented focuses on the effect of the redox properties on the doped metal oxide response, both from the stability point of view and the photodoping performance, by monitoring the changes in the optical behavior of ITO/redox hybrid systems upon ultraviolet illumination.

Contemporary Developments in Ferrocene Chemistry: Physical, Chemical, Biological and Industrial Aspects

Ferrocenyl-based compounds have many applications in diverse scientific disciplines, including in polymer chemistry as redox dynamic polymers and dendrimers, in materials science as bioreceptors, and in pharmacology, biochemistry, electrochemistry, and nonlinear optics. Considering the horizon of ferrocene chemistry, we attempted to condense the neoteric advancements in the synthesis and applications of ferrocene derivatives reported in the literature from 2016 to date. This paper presents data on the progression of the synthesis of diverse classes of organic compounds having ferrocene scaffolds and recent developments in applications of ferrocene-based organometallic compounds, with a special focus on their biological, medicinal, bio-sensing, chemosensing, asymmetric catalysis, material, and industrial applications.

Metallocene-Naphthalimide Derivatives: The Effect of Geometry, DFT Methodology, and Transition Metals on Absorption Spectra

In the present paper, the photophysical properties of metallocene-4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide-piperazine molecules (1-M²⁺), as well as their oxidized and protonated derivatives (1-M³⁺, 1-M²⁺-H⁺, and 1-M³⁺-H⁺), where M = Fe, Co, and Ni, were studied via DFT and TD-DFT, employing three functionals, i.e., PBE0, TPSSh, and wB97XD. The effect of the substitution of the transition metal M on their oxidation state, and/or the protonation of the molecules, was investigated. The present calculated systems have not been investigated before and, except for the data regarding their photophysical properties, the present study provides important information regarding the effect of geometry and of DFT methodology on absorption spectra. It was found that small differences in geometry, specifically in the geometry of N atoms, reflect significant differences in absorption spectra. The common differences in spectra due to the use of different functionals can be significantly increased when the functionals predict minima even with small geometry differences. For most of the calculated molecules, the main absorption peaks in visible and near-UV areas correspond mainly to charge transfer excitations. The Fe complexes present larger oxidation energies at 5.4 eV, whereas Co and Ni complexes have smaller ones, at about 3.5 eV. There are many intense UV absorption peaks with excitation energies similar to their oxidation energies, showing that the emission from these excited states can be antagonistic to their oxidation. Regarding the use of functionals, the inclusion of dispersion corrections does not affect the geometry, and consequently the absorption spectra, of the present calculated molecular systems. For certain applications, where there is a need for a redox molecular system including metallocene, the oxidation energies could be lowered significantly, to about 40%, with the replacement of the iron with cobalt or nickel. Finally, the present molecular system, using cobalt as the transition metal, has the potential to be used as a sensor.

Synthesis, Electrochemical and Fluorescence Properties of the First Fluorescent Member of the Ferrocifen Family and of Its Oxidized Derivatives

The first fluorescent ferrociphenol derivative (P797) has been synthesized via McMurry cross-coupling followed by copper-catalyzed [3 + 2] azide-alkyne cycloaddition of the fluorescent group coumarin. Cyclic voltammograms of P797 exhibit either a monoelectronic oxidation wave ascribed to the ferrocene Fe(II) → Fe(III) conversion or a three-electron oxidation process in the presence of a base, leading to a Fe(III) quinone methide adduct. This general sequence is consistent with those previously described for non-fluorescent ferrociphenols. Furthermore, the fluorescence properties of P797 and its oxidized intermediates appear to strongly depend on the redox state of the ferrocene group. Indeed, electrochemical generation of Fe(III) (ferrocenium) states markedly increases the fluorescence emission intensity. In contrast, the emission of the Fe(II) (ferrocene) states is partially quenched by photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the Fe(II) donor to the coumarin acceptor and by concentration-dependent self-quenching. Owing to its switchable fluorescence properties, complex P797 could represent an innovative and useful tool to study the biodistribution and the redox state of ferrocifens in cancer cells.

Self-Assembled Nanodot Actuator with Changeable Fluorescence by π-π Stacking Force Based on a Four-Armed Foldable Phthalocyanine Molecule and Its Supersensitive Molecular Recognition

Designing intelligent molecules and smart nanomaterials as molecular machines is becoming increasingly important in the nanoscience fields. Herein, we report a nanodot actuator with changeable fluorescence by π-π stacking force based on a four-armed foldable phthalocyanine molecule. The assembled nanodot possessed a three-dimensional molecular space structure and multiple supramolecular interactions. The arms of the nanodot could fold and open intelligently in response to environmental molecular stimuli such as natural plant mimosa, which could lead to multiple variable fluorescence emissions. The nanodot was highly sensitive to the biomolecule thyroxine at the molecular level. The accurate molecular recognition and the changeable fluorescence conversion of the nanodot were attributed to multiple supramolecular interactions, including photoinduced electron transfer (PET), intramolecular fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and π-π stacking of the nanodots, resulting in an intelligent "nanodot machine with folding arms". The self-assembled nanodot actuators with changeable fluorescence have potential applications in advanced intelligent material fields.

Synthesis and bioimaging of a BODIPY-based fluorescence quenching probe for Fe3

Iron is the main substance for maintaining life. Real-time determination of ferric ion (Fe3+) in living cells is of great significance for understanding the relationship of Fe3+ concentration changes with various physiological and pathological processes. Fluorescent probes are suitable for the detection of trace metal ions in cells due to their low toxicity and high sensitivity. In this work, a boron-dipyrromethene-based fluorescent probe (BODIPY-CL) for selective detection of Fe3+ was synthesized. The fluorescence emission of BODIPY-CL was determined at 516 nm. In a pH range of 1 to 10, the probe BODIPY-CL exhibits a quenching response to Fe3+. Meanwhile, BODIPY-CL showed a highly selective response to Fe3+ compared with 16 kinds of metal ions. The stoichiometry ratio of BODIPY-CL bound to Fe3+ was nearly 2 : 1. The fluorescence quenching response obtained by the sensor was linear with the Fe3+ concentration in the range of 0-400 μM, and the detection limit was 2.9 μM. BODIPY-CL was successfully applied to image Fe3+ in cells. This study provides a promising fluorescent imaging probe for further research on the physiological and pathological effects of Fe3+.

Novel Benzothiazole-Based Highly Selective Ratiometric Fluorescent Turn-On Sensors for Zn2+ and Colorimetric Chemosensors for Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ Ions

Metal ions play a very important role in environmental as well as biological fields. The detection of specific metal ions at a minute level caught much attention, and hence, several probes are available in the literature. Even though benzothiazole-based molecules have a special place in the medicinal field, only very few chemosensors are reported based on this moiety. The current work describes the design and synthesis of the benzothiazole-based chemosensor for a highly selective and sensitive detection of biologically important metal ions such as Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+. The sensing studies of compound-1 showed a ratiometric as well as colorimetric response toward Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions and color changes from colorless to yellow and is found to be insensitive toward various metal ions (Cd2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Ba2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+). Further, compound-1 exhibited ratiometric as well as turn-on-enhanced fluorescence response toward Zn2+ ions and turn off response for Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. The Job plots revealed that the binding stoichiometry of compound-1 and metal ions is 2:1. The detection limits were found to be 0.25 ppm for Zn2+, while it was 0.30 ppm and 0.34 ppm for Ni2+ and Cu2+, respectively. In addition, density functional theory results strongly support the colorimetric response of metals, and the reversibility studies suggested that compound-1 can be used as a powerful chemosensor for the detection of Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions. The bioimaging data illustrated that compound-1 is a very effective ratiometric sensor for Zn2+ ions in live cells.

Fluorescent chemosensors containing redox-active ferrocene: a review

The redox-active ferrocene containing two cyclopentadienyl rings and iron was extensively employed in the field of sensing, catalysis, medicine, biotechnology etc., due to the structural stability, solubility in common solvents and easy structural modification to make a wide variety of ferrocene derivatives. The ferrocene moiety can be linked suitably with fluoro-chromogenic units and applied for the multichannel (fluorescent, chromogenic and redox) sensing of various bioactive and toxic analytes. This review was narrated to compile some important ferrocene based fluorescent chemosensors developed for the detection of metal ions, anions and neutral analytes. The analytical novelty and sensing mechanisms of the summarized chemosensors are discussed to open new scopes for future research.

Similar, Yet Different: Long-Range Metal-Metal Coupling and Electron-Transfer Processes in Metal-Free 5,10,15,20-Tetra(ruthenocenyl)porphyrin

The electronic structure, redox properties, and long-range metal-metal coupling in metal-free 5,10,15,20-tetra(ruthenocenyl)porphyrin (H₂TRcP) were probed by spectroscopic (NMR, UV-vis, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)), electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry, CV, and differential pulse voltammetry, DPV), spectroelectrochemical, and chemical oxidation methods, as well as theoretical (density functional theory, DFT, and time-dependent DFT, TDDFT) approaches. It was demonstrated that the spectroscopic properties of H₂TRcP are significantly different from those in H₂TFcP (metal-free 5,10,15,20-tetra(ferrocenyl)porphyrin). Ruthenocenyl fragments in H₂TRcP have higher oxidation potentials than the ferrocene groups in the H₂TFcP complex. Similar to H₂TFcP, we were able to access and spectroscopically characterize the one- and two-electron oxidized mixed-valence states in the H₂TRcP system. DFT predicts that the porphyrin π-system stabilizes the [H₂TRcP]⁺ mixed-valence cation and prevents its dimerization, which is characteristic for ruthenocenyl systems. However, formation of the mixed-valence [H₂TRcP]²⁺ is significantly less reproducible than the formation of [H₂TRcP]⁺. DFT and TDDFT calculations suggest the ruthenocenyl fragment dominance in the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy region and the presence of the low-energy MLCT (Rc → porphyrin (π*)) transitions in the visible region with energies higher than the predominantly porphyrin-centered Q-bands.

Light-Triggered Metal Coordination Dynamics in Photoswitchable Dithienylethene-Ferrocene System

The C₂-symmetric photochromic molecule 3, containing dithienylethene (DTE) and ferrocene units connected by an alkyne bridge, represents a unique probe where a metal (Hg²⁺) binds with the central DTE moiety. Both photoisomerized states of 3 (open, 3o; closed, 3c) are found to interact with Hg²⁺ ion by the S atoms of the DTE core; however, the binding constants (from a UV-vis study) and DFT calculations suggest that the open isomer (3o) binds with the metal ion more strongly than that of the closed isomer (3c). Notably, the course of metal binding does not perturb the inherent photoisomerization properties of the DTE core and the photoswitchability persists even in the metal-coordinated form of 3, however, with a comparatively slower rate. The quantum yields for photocyclization (Φ_o→c) and photocycloreversion (Φ_c→o) in the free form are 0.56 and 0.007, respectively, whereas the photocyclization quantum yield in the Hg²⁺ complexed species is 0.068, 8.2 times lower than the photocyclization quantum yield (Φ_o→c) of free 3o. Thus, the rate of photoisomerization can be modulated by a suitable metal coordination to the DTE core. The dynamics of photoswitchability in the metal-coordinated form of DTE has been explored by experimental means (UV-vis and electrochemical studies) as well as quantum chemical calculations.

Probing Electronic Communication and Excited-State Dynamics in the Unprecedented Ferrocene-Containing Zinc MB-DIPY

The electronic communication between two ferrocene groups in the electron-deficient expanded aza-BODIPY analogue of zinc manitoba-dipyrromethene (MB-DIPY) was probed by spectroscopic, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and theoretical methods. The excited-state dynamics involved sub-ps formation of the charge-separated state in the organometallic zinc MB-DIPYs, followed by recovery of the ground state via charge recombination in 12 ps. The excited-state behavior was contrasted with that observed in the parent complex that lacked the ferrocene electron donors and has a much longer excited-state lifetime (670 ps for the singlet state). Much longer decay times observed for the parent complex without ferrocene confirm that the main quenching mechanism in the ferrocene-containing 4 is reflective of the ultrafast ferrocene-to-MB-DIPY core charge transfer (CT).

Novel Quinoline-Based Thiazole Derivatives for Selective Detection of Fe3+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ Ions

New quinoline-based thiazole derivatives QPT and QBT were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies. The metal-sensing properties of the probes were further examined by absorption and fluorescence spectrometry. The fluorescence intensity of QPT and QBT was remarkably quenched during the addition of Fe³⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions in THF/H₂O (1:1) at pH = 7.4 in HEPES buffer, while the addition of other metal ions did not affect the fluorescence intensity of the ligands. The detection ability of the probes QPT and QBT was further investigated by titration with various equivalents of metal ions, optimized pH ranges for detection, and reversibility with Na₂EDTA for biological applications.
