Abstract
Liver fibrosis is a dynamic pathological process that can be triggered by any chronic liver injury. If left unaddressed, it will inevitably progress to the severe outcomes of liver cirrhosis or even hepatocellular carcinoma. In the past few years, the prevalence and fatality of hepatic fibrosis have been steadily rising on a global scale. As a result of its intricate pathogenesis, the quest for pharmacological interventions targeting liver fibrosis has remained a formidable challenge. Currently, no pharmaceuticals are exhibiting substantial clinical efficacy in the management of hepatic fibrosis. Hence, it is of utmost importance to expedite the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of this condition. Various research studies have revealed the ability of different natural flavonoid compounds to alleviate or reverse hepatic fibrosis through a range of mechanisms, which are related to the regulation of liver inflammation, oxidative stress, synthesis and secretion of fibrosis-related factors, hepatic stellate cells activation, and proliferation, and extracellular matrix synthesis and degradation by these compounds. This review summarizes the progress of research on different sources of natural flavonoids with inhibitory effects on liver fibrosis over the last decades. The anti-fibrotic effects of natural flavonoids have been increasingly studied, making them a potential source of drugs for the treatment of liver fibrosis due to their good efficacy and biosafety.

Abstract
Diabetic testicular damage is quite a common and significant complication in diabetic men, which could result in infertility. The natural fertility rate of type 1 diabetes men is only 50% because of testicular damage. This research first aimed to explore the intervention effect of C3G on testicular tissue damage induced by diabetes. Here, a streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic rat model was established, and then C3G was administered. After 8 weeks of C3G supplementation, the symptoms of diabetes (e.g., high blood glucose, lower body weight, polydipsia, polyphagia) were relieved, and at the same time that sperm motility and viability increased, sperm abnormality decreased in C3G-treated diabetic rats. Furthermore, the pathological structure of testis was restored; the fibrosis of the testicular interstitial tissue was inhibited; and the LH, FSH, and testosterone levels were all increased in the C3G-treated groups. Testicular oxidative stress was relieved; serum and testicular inflammatory cytokines levels were significantly decreased in C3G-treated groups; levels of Bax, Caspase-3, TGF-β1 and Smad2/3 protein in testis decreased; and the level of Bcl-2 was up-regulated in the C3G-treated groups. A possible mechanism might be that C3G improved antioxidant capacity, relieved oxidative stress, increased anti-inflammatory cytokine expression, and inhibited the apoptosis of spermatogenic cells and testicular fibrosis, thus promoting the production of testosterone and repair of testicular function. In conclusion, this study is the first to reveal that testicular damage could be mitigated by C3G in type 1 diabetic rats. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the application of C3G in male reproductive injury caused by diabetes.

Abstract
Extracellular matrix (ECM) resolution by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is a well-documented mechanism. MMPs play a dual and complex role in modulating ECM degradation at different stages of liver fibrosis, depending on the timing and levels of their expression. Increased MMP-1 combats disease progression by cleaving the fibrillar ECM. Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) increase expression of MMP-2, -9, and -13 in different chemicals-induced animal models, which may alleviate or worsen disease progression based on animal models and the stage of liver fibrosis. In the early stage, elevated expression of certain MMPs may damage surrounding tissue and activate HSCs, promoting fibrosis progression. At the later stage, downregulation of MMPs can facilitate ECM accumulation and disease progression. A number of phytochemicals modulate MMP activity and ECM turnover, alleviating disease progression. However, the effects of phytochemicals on the expression of different MMPs are variable and may depend on the disease models and stage, and the dosage, timing and duration of phytochemicals used in each study. Here, we review the most recent advances in the role of MMPs in the effects of phytochemicals on liver fibrogenesis, which indicates that further studies are warranted to confirm and define the potential clinical efficacy of these phytochemicals.

Abstract
Rice (Oryza L.) is an essential food for more than 50 percent of the world's population and is the world's second-largest grain crop. Pigmented rice comes in various colors, such as black, red, brown, and green. Anthocyanins, like cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and peonidin-3-O-glucoside, are the primary color pigments in colored rice, whereas proanthocyanidins and flavan-3-ol oligosaccharides, with catechins as the central synthesis unit, are found in brown rice. This review article's aim is to give information and a summary of rice activities, research methods, also mechanisms of action (Oryza L.). Intake of pigmented rice was already associated with a number of health benefits, including antioxidant activity, anticancer, antitumor, antidiabetic activity, and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Rice contains several bioactive compounds, such as γ-oryzanol, phenolic acid, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, carotenoids, and phytosterols, which have been widely studied and shown to have several pharmacological activities. The use of current herbal compounds is rapidly increasing, including the practice of pharmacological disease prevention and treatment. Herbal remedies have entered the international market as a result of research into plant biopharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. Through a variety of pharmacological activities, it is clear that Oryza L. is a popular herb. As a result, additional research on Oryza L. can be conducted to investigate more recent and comprehensive pharmacological effectiveness, to provide information and an overview of Rice (Oryza L.) activities, research methods, and mechanisms of action. Several natural substances are characterized by low water solubility, low stability, and sensitivity to light and oxygen, and the potential for poor absorption of the active substances requires modification of the formulation. To improve the effectiveness of pharmacologically active substances originating from natural ingredients, drug delivery systems that use lipid-based formulations can be considered innovations.

Abstract
It has recently been reported that black rice (BR) extract has anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and anti-osteoporosis effects. It has been shown to reduce obese-related kidney dysfunction in animal models. This study aimed to investigate the effect of resistant starch from BR (RS) on renal inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in obese insulin resistant rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups: normal diet (ND), ND treated with 150 mg of RS (NDRS150), high-fat (HF) diet, HF treated with 100 and 150 mg of RS (HFRS100), (HFRS150), and HF treated with metformin as a positive control. Insulin resistance was shown in the HF rats by glucose intolerance, increased insulin, total area under the curve of glucose and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. The resulting metabolic disturbance in the HF rats caused renal inflammation, fibrosis and apoptosis progressing to kidney injury and dysfunction. Prebiotic RS including anthocyanin from BR at doses of 100 and 150 mg ameliorated insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and liver injury. Treatment with RS reduced TGF-β fibrotic and apoptotic pathways by inhibition of NF-κB and inflammatory cytokines which potentially restore kidney damage and dysfunction. In conclusion, prebiotic RS from BR ameliorated obesity induced renal injury and dysfunction by attenuating inflammatory, fibrotic, and apoptotic pathways in insulin resistant rats induced by HF.

Abstract
Farnesoid X receptor (FXR), a bile acid receptor, plays an essential role in maintaining bile acid and liver homeostasis and has been recognized as an essential target for drug-induced liver injury (DILI). This study aimed to identify potential FXR agonists by virtual screening, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and biological assays. First, an in-house Traditional Chinese medicine compound database was screened using a virtual approach based on molecular docking to reveal potential FXR agonists. Secondly, MD was applied to analyze the process of agonist binding. Finally, the acetaminophen (APAP)-induced L02 cells model evaluated the pharmacodynamic activity of agonists treating DILI. Virtual screening results showed that kaempferol-7-O-rhamnoside was confirmed as the FXR agonist. MD results showed that kaempferol-7-O-rhamnoside could stably bind the FXR. In addition, in vitro cell-based assay showed that kaempferol-7-O-rhamnoside could promote the expression of the FXR gene and inhibit the Cyp7a1 gene expression in APAP-induced cells, significantly reducing the activities of AST, AKP and ROS, and enhancing the expression of GSH. The current study confirmed that kaempferol-7-O-rhamnoside might improve liver function by promoting proliferation, ameliorating oxidative stress, and regulating FXR target genes as observed in vitro. Therefore, in this study, discovering the FXR agonist, kaempferol-7-O-rhamnoside, provides valuable guidance for developing novel drugs against DILI.

Abstract
Platelet chemokines play well-established roles in the atherosclerotic inflammation. Cyanidin-3-O-β-glucoside (Cy-3-g) is one of the main bioactive compounds in anthocyanins, but its effects on chemokines during atherosclerosis have not been determined yet. In the present study, ApoE-/- mice were fed on the chow diet, high-fat diet (HFD), and HFD-supplemented Cy-3-g at 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg diet. After 16 weeks, Cy-3-g significantly alleviated the atherosclerotic lesion and inhibited platelet aggregation and activation. Moreover, Cy-3-g significantly reduced inflammatory chemokines CXCL4, CXCL7, CCL5, CXCL5, CXCL12, and CCL2 in plasma and downregulated CXCR4, CXCR7, and CCR5 on platelets and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Besides, Cy-3-g decreased the mRNA of TNFα, IFNγ, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, CD68, MMP7, CCL5, CXCR4, and CCR5 in the aorta of mice. Therefore, it suggests that Cy-3-g plays important preventive roles in the process of atherosclerosis via attenuating chemokines and receptors in ApoE-/- mice.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels and is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Increasingly more evidence has shown that the senescence of vascular endothelial cells is the key to endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases. Anthocyanin is a type of water-soluble polyphenol pigment and secondary metabolite of plant-based food widely existing in fruits and vegetables. The gut microbiome is involved in the metabolism of anthocyanins and mediates the biological activities of anthocyanins and their metabolites, while anthocyanins also regulate the growth of specific bacteria in the microbiota and promote the proliferation of healthy anaerobic flora. Accumulating studies have shown that anthocyanins have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects. Many animal and in vitro experiments have also proven that anthocyanins have protective effects on cardiovascular-disease-related dysfunction. However, the molecular mechanism of anthocyanin in eliminating aging endothelial cells and preventing cardiovascular diseases is very complex and is not fully understood. In this systematic review, we summarize the metabolism and activities of anthocyanins, as well as their effects on scavenging senescent cells and cardioprotection.

Abstract
Whole grains are a pivotal food category for the human diet and represent an invaluable source of carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, phytocompunds, minerals, and vitamins. Many studies have shown that the consumption of whole grains is linked to a reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. However, several of their positive health effects seem to disappear when grains are consumed in the refined form. Herein we review the available literature on whole grains with a focus on molecular composition and health benefits on many chronic diseases with the aim to offer an updated and pragmatic reference for physicians and nutrition professionals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The unripe fruits of Rubus chingii Hu. ("Fu-peng-zi" in Chinese) is a well-known herbal tonic in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for tonifying liver and kidney. However, little is known regarding its therapeutic efficacy against liver fibrosis and the underlying mechanism. METHODS The current research aims to explore the potential of Rubus chingii Hu. unripe fruits extract (RF) in the treatment of liver fibrosis and explore the underlying mechanism. RF was administered (450 and 900 mg·kg- 1 of body weight per day) orally to male C57BL/6 mice with CCl4-induced liver fibrosis for 3 weeks. The histopathological changes and fibrosis stage in liver tissue were assessed using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Sirius red staining. The distribution of α-SMA and Col1A1 in the liver was analyzed to determine the hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation using immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescent analysis. Various biochemical markers in serum (ALT, AST) and liver (Hyp, IL1-β, IL6, TNF-α and MCP-1) were observed to assess the liver's injury, fibrosis, and inflammation. In liver tissue, fibrosis-associated proteins including α-SMA, TGF-β1, Smad2/3, p-Smad2/3, and Smad4 were detected through a Western blot assay. Pyrosequencing-based analysis of bacterial 16 S ribosomal RNA from variable regions V3-V4 of fecal samples characterized the gut microbiota. Spearman's rank correlation analysis was performed for the association between altered bacterial genera by RF and pharmacodynamics parameters. RESULTS Three weeks of RF treatment can significantly lower liver inflammatory levels, pathological abnormalities, and collagen fibrous deposition in mice with CCl4-induced liver fibrosis. The expressions of α-SMA and Col1A1 were lowered by RF, while the expression levels of TGF-β/Smads signaling pathway-related proteins, including TGF-β1, p-Smad2/3, and Smad4, were dramatically decreased by RF. The RF treatment significantly increased or reduced 18 different bacterial species, restoring the CCl4-induced gut microbiota imbalance to the normal group's levels. According to correlation analysis, the bacterial genera Bifidobacterium and Turicibacter were the most significant in restoring CCl4-induced liver fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS RF can reduce liver damage and delay the onset of liver fibrosis through modulating TGF-β/Smads signaling pathway. Furthermore, RF's anti-liver fibrosis effect was related to balancing the gut microbial community, partly attained by increasing Bifidobacterium and Turicibacter in liver fibrosis.

Abstract
Given the general beneficial effects of antioxidants-rich foods on human health and disease prevention, there is a continuous interest in plant secondary metabolites conferring attractive colors to fruits and grains and responsible, together with others, for nutraceutical properties. Cereals and Solanaceae are important components of the human diet, thus, they are the main targets for functional food development by exploitation of genetic resources and metabolic engineering. In this review, we focus on the impact of antioxidants-rich cereal and Solanaceae derived foods on human health by analyzing natural biodiversity and biotechnological strategies aiming at increasing the antioxidant level of grains and fruits, the impact of agronomic practices and food processing on antioxidant properties combined with a focus on the current state of pre-clinical and clinical studies. Abstract
SCOPE Anthocyanin cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (Cy3G) possesses a great potential in prevention of diabetes and its vascular complications while the underlying mechanisms are still far from clear. Accumulating evidence suggests that endothelial insulin transport plays a critical role in regulating metabolic insulin sensitivity. Whether Cy3G can modulate metabolic insulin resistance via regulating endothelial insulin transport is not reported yet. METHODS AND RESULTS Palmitic acid (PA)-treated mouse aortic endothelial cells (MAECs) model and high-fat diet (HFD) fed mice model are used. Compared with HFD mice, Cy3G supplementation decrease exogenous insulin content in skeletal muscle and ameliorate metabolic insulin resistance. In culture, Cy3G can directly ameliorate PA-induced impairment on FITC-insulin uptake in MAECs. Mechanistically, Cy3G can effectively decrease inflammatory cytokines and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-kappa-B inhibitor alpha (IκBα) activation, and restore the attenuated Akt/eNOS signaling pathway. Blunted nitric oxide (NO) synthase with N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) can effectively abolish the protective role of Cy3G on endothelial insulin transport and insulin-stimulated glucose utilization in HFD-fed mice. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that Cy3G supplementation can directly restore the attenuated nitic oxide-mediated endothelial insulin transport and thereby ameliorate metabolic insulin resistance. Our finding can provide a novel explanation for the anti-diabetic effects of Cy3G.

Abstract
Berries are natural sources of anthocyanins, especially cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G), and exhibit significant antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects against various oxidative stress-induced disorders. C3G and its metabolites possess higher absorption and bioavailability, and interaction with gut microbiota may enhance their health benefits. Various in vitro studies have shown the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mitigating potential of C3G. However, in in vivo models, C3G exerts its cytoprotective properties by regulating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant-responsive element (ARE) pathway. Despite existing reports stating various health benefits of C3G, its antioxidant potential by modulating the Nrf2 pathway remains less identified. This review discusses the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant response of C3G in modulating oxidative stress against DNA damage, apoptosis, carcinogen toxicity, and inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, we have reviewed the recent clinical trial data to establish cross talk between a berry-rich diet and disease prevention.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a potentially toxic trace element frequently existed in foods, water, and air, threatening liver function from its continuous bioaccumulation and induction of oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the hepatotoxicity of Cd during puberty remains unclear. In this study, pubertal mice were given cadmium chloride at a dose of 5.0 mg/kg·bw by gavage, and the liver damage was investigated at different treatment points of 10, 20, and 30 days. After Cd exposure, there is an obvious inflammatory hepatocyte infiltration accompanied by more apoptotic cells at 20 days and an increase in alanine aminotransferases and aspartate aminotransferases in circulation at 30 days. Additionally, the soaring TNF-α and MCP-1 were found in liver, and the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-18) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (TGF-β, IL-10, and IL-13) were both significantly upregulated. Moreover, the activated M1 and M2 macrophages were confirmed in charge of these cytokines release. Most importantly, the data validated a pivotal role of NOD-like receptor pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in Cd-induced inflammation in liver at puberty. Collectively, our results suggested that low-dose Cd oral exposure can cause liver inflammation via activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and give rise to severe liver injury at puberty.

Abstract
Fibrosis is a chronic and progressive disorder characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix, which leads to scarring and loss of function of the affected organ or tissue. Indeed, the fibrotic process affects a variety of organs and tissues, with specific molecular background. However, two common hallmarks are shared: the crucial role of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and the involvement of the inflammation process, that is essential for initiating the fibrotic degeneration. TGF-β in particular but also other cytokines regulate the most common molecular mechanism at the basis of fibrosis, the Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT). EMT has been extensively studied, but not yet fully explored as a possible therapeutic target for fibrosis. A deeper understanding of the crosstalk between fibrosis and EMT may represent an opportunity for the development of a broadly effective anti-fibrotic therapy. Here we report the evidences of the relationship between EMT and multi-organ fibrosis, and the possible therapeutic approaches that may be developed by exploiting this relationship.

Abstract
Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) have been reported to hold a plentitude of health-promoting properties beyond basic nutrition, mainly attributed to their anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity. In this article, we built the phytochemical profile of three wild bilberry fruit extract formulations (aqueous, methanolic, and hydro-methanolic) using UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS putative analysis, identifying 88 individual phytochemicals, mainly flavonoids (total content 8.41 ± 0.11 mg QE/g dw), free amino acids, polyphenols (total content 21.68 ± 0.19 mg GAE/g dw), carboxylic acids, and vitamins. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the extract was assessed, reaching 78.03 ± 0.16% DPPH free radical scavenging activity, comparable to literature values determined for bilberry extracts of other origin. Due to the increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome and based on the reviewed benefits of bilberries, we tested the most potent formulation of our bilberry extracts in this biological context. The in vivo rescue effect of a bilberry extract supplemented diet on Drosophila melanogaster was assessed by monitoring biochemical and genomic markers. Hemolymph trehalose levels were halved upon addition of 3% hydro-methanolic bilberry extract to a high-sugar (1.5 M sucrose) diet, as compared to the non-supplemented high-sugar diet. Noteworthy, the rescue seen for flies kept on the bilberry extract supplemented high-sugar diet appeared to parallel the trehalose levels observed in the case of the control diet (50 mM sucrose) flies. Moreover, next to the trehalose-lowering type of in vivo effects, other gene expression related rescues were also detected for genes such as InR, Akh, AstA, AstC, Irk, Npc2g, and CCHa2 upon supplementation of the high-sugar diet with our hydro-methanolic bilberry fruit extract. Our findings suggest that such a bilberry fruit extract could generate physiological and genomic type of compensatory mechanisms so that further translational approaches would advance the understanding of some human specific pathological conditions.

Abstract
Liver fibrosis resulting from continuous long-term hepatic damage represents a heavy burden worldwide. Liver fibrosis is recognized as a complicated pathogenic mechanism with extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation and hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation. A series of drugs demonstrate significant antifibrotic activity in vitro and in vivo. No specific agents with ideally clinical efficacy for liver fibrosis treatment have been developed. In this review, we summarized the antifibrotic effects and molecular mechanisms of 29 kinds of common natural products. The mechanism of these compounds is correlated with anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and antifibrotic activities. Moreover, parenchymal hepatic cell survival, HSC deactivation, and ECM degradation by interfering with multiple targets and signaling pathways are also involved in the antifibrotic effects of these compounds. However, there remain two bottlenecks for clinical breakthroughs. The low bioavailability of natural products should be improved, and the combined application of two or more compounds should be investigated for more prominent pharmacological effects. In summary, exploration on natural products against liver fibrosis is becoming increasingly extensive. Therefore, natural products are potential resources for the development of agents to treat liver fibrosis.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the serious complications in diabetes. Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) from black rice was reported to have hypoglycemic effects and an anti-osteoporosis effect in diabetic rats. Whether it has preventive effects on DN has not been reported. In this study, we established a rat model of DN, and C3G at two doses (10 and 20 mg kg-1 day-1) were administered to see its anti-DN effect. A total of 8 weeks of C3G supplementation decreased blood glucose and serum insulin, improved the renal function, and relieved renal glomerular sclerosis and interstitial fibrosis of DN rats. Also, the kidneys of DN rats had improved the oxidative defense system. Pro-inflammatory mediators were markedly reduced in serum and kidneys of the C3G-treated groups. Transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), phosphor-Smad2, and phosphor-Smad3 protein expression levels were significantly decreased in the kidney of the C3G-treated group, whereas the Smad7 expression level was upregulated by C3G. Our results indicate that C3G can ameliorate DN via antioxidative stress and anti-inflammation and regulate the TGF-β1/Smad2/3 pathway. Our results suggest that C3G from black rice might be used as a renal-protective nutrient in DN.

Abstract
AIMS Increasing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) by Nicotinamide riboside (NR) provides protective benefits in multiple disorders. However, the role of NR on liver fibrosis is unclear. We performed in vivo and in vitro experiments to test the hepatic protective effects of NR against liver fibrosis and the underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mice were injected with CCl4 to establish liver fibrosis model. NR was given by gavage to explore the hepatic protection of NR. LX-2 cells were given a TGF-β stimulation ± NR, the activation of LX-2 cells and the acetylation of Smads were analyzed. To further confirm the role of Sirt1 on the protective pathway of NR, we knockdown Sirt1 in LX-2 cells. KEY FINDINGS We found NR could prevent liver fibrosis and reverse the existing liver fibrosis. NR inhibited the activation of LX-2 cells induced by TGF-β, activated Sirt1 and deacetylated Smad2/3. Sirt1 knockdown diminished the inhibiting effect of NR on LX-2 cells activation, and increased expressions of acetylated Smads. In conclusion, NR could prevent liver fibrosis via suppressing activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). This protective effect was mediated by regulating the acetylation of Smads signaling pathway. SIGNIFICANCE NR protected mice against liver fibrosis induced by CCl4. NR suppressed activation of hepatic stellate cells induced by TGF-β. NR protects liver fibrosis via increasing the activity of Sirt1 and decreasing the expression of P300, resulting in the deacetylation of Smads in stellate cells.

Abstract
Cyanidin-3-O-β-glucoside (Cy-3-g), a typical and abundant monomer of anthocyanins, exhibits a variety of biological activities, such as anti-atherosclerosis, anti-obesity, and anticancer effects. However, to date little is known about its effects on asthma. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of dietary Cy-3-g on allergic asthma in an animal model. BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) to induce allergic asthma. The pathological changes of the lung tissues, type 2 helper (Th2)-associated cytokine production in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and the interleukin 4 receptor alpha (IL-4Rα)-signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) signaling pathway activities were assessed. We found that Cy-3-g significantly inhibited OVA-induced inflammatory cell infiltration and mucus hyper-production in lung tissues, reduced the production of interleukin 4 (IL-4), interleukin 5 (IL-5) and interleukin 13 (IL-13) in BALF. Furthermore, Cy-3-g effectively suppressed OVA-induced up-regulation of the IL-4Rα-STAT6 signaling pathway activity of the lung tissues. These results demonstrated that dietary Cy-3-g could attenuate allergic airway inflammation in a murine asthma model, and Cy-3-g might be used as an agent for asthma prevention and/or treatment in the future.

Abstract
In recent decades, the capability of mankind spermatogenesis is declining due to various threats. Anthocyanins as colorful polyphenols possess beneficial functions for the organisms, including Leydig cells, but their effects on male spermatogenesis remain underexplored. In our study, the protective effect of cyanidin-3- O-glucoside (C3G) was investigated on the 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) caused rat spermatogenic disorders. At low doses, C3G improved the number and motility of the sperms, alleviating the seminiferous tubule injury. Interestingly, C3G showed no influence on sexual hormone but increased the androgen receptor expression. Meanwhile, C3G reduced the oxidative stress and number of apoptotic cells and promoted the integrity of the blood-testis barrier in the testis. Additionally, C3G mediated the activation of p-ERK, p-JNK, and p53, which are related to the protection of Sertoli cells and spermatogenesis. In conclusion, C3G protected against the 3-MCPD caused testis damage and spermatogenic disorders under appropriate doses, which indicates the potential protection of anthocyanins on male reproduction.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and inflammatory response are well known to be involved in the pathogenesis of acute liver injury. This study was performed to examine the hepatoprotective effect of ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) against CCl4 -induced acute liver injury, and further to elucidate the involvement of Nrf2 signaling pathway in vivo and in vitro. Mice were orally administered Rg1 (15, 30, and 60 mg/kg) or sulforaphane (SFN) once daily for 1 week prior to 750 μL/kg CCl4 injection. The results showed that Rg1 markedly altered relative liver weights, promoted liver repair, increased the serum level of TP and decreased the serum levels of ALT, AST and ALP. Hepatic oxidative stress was inhibited by Rg1, as evidenced by the decrease in MDA, and increases in GSH, SOD, and CAT in the liver. Further research demonstrated that Rg1 suppressed liver inflammation response through repressing the expression levels of inflammation-related genes including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, COX-2, and iNOS. In addition, Rg1 enhanced antioxidative stress and liver detoxification abilities by up-regulating Nrf2 and its target-genes such as GCLC, GCLM, HO-1, NQO1, Besp, Mrp2, Mrp3, Mrp4, and down-regulating Cyp2e1. However, the changes in Nrf2 target-genes, as well as ameliorative liver histology induced by Rg1 were abrogated by Nrf2 antagonist all-transretinoic acid in vivo and Nrf2 siRNA in vitro. Overall, the findings indicated that Rg1 might be an effective approach for the prevention against acute liver injury by activating Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
The use of phytochemicals for preventing chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress such as cataracts is hindered by their low bioavailability. The effects of nano-carriers on the antioxidant activities of extracts of black rice with giant embryo (BRGEx) and soybeans (SBx) have been determined in human lens epithelial B3 cells. Scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that rGO (reduced graphene oxide) has a flat surface unlike GO (graphene oxide), which has a distinctive wrinkled structure with defects. UPLC analysis revealed 41.9 μg/100 g of γ-oryzanols in water extract of BRGE, and 111.8 μg /100 g of lutein, 757.7 μg/100 g of γ-tocotrienol, 4071.4 μg/100 g of γ-tocopherol in 40% ethanol extract of soybeans, respectively. Even though a low concentration of BRGEx alone did not show any antioxidant activity in B3 cells, co-treatment of BRGEx with rGO together substantially reduced hydrogen peroxide and methylglyoxal-induced DNA damage, as determined by phosphorylated γH2AX. In addition, SBx with rGO also attenuated DNA damage. Furthermore, intracellular reactive oxygen species were significantly decreased by combining extracts of these colored grains with rGO. These results suggest a potential application of nanocarriers for enhancing the bioavailability of phytochemicals.

Abstract
Liver ageing is a significant risk factor for chronic liver diseases. Anthocyanin is a food additive that has previously shown efficacy in increasing longevity. Here, we tested whether anthocyanins could protect young mice from accelerated ageing of the liver. Kunming mice were injected with D-galactose to accelerate ageing and were given 20 or 40 mg/kg anthocyanins as an intervention. After eight weeks, whole liver function and structure were evaluated, and the expression levels of genes involved in the DNA damage signalling pathway were assessed by Western blot analysis. Anthocyanins delayed the reduction of the liver index (p < 0.05), hepatic tissue injury and fibrosis. Anthocyanins also maintained the stability of the redox system (GSH-PX, T-SOD and MDA) in plasma and liver structures (p < 0.001) and reduced the levels of inflammatory factors (IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α) in the liver (p < 0.05). Moreover, the expression levels of sensors (ATM and ATR), mediators (H2AX and γ-H2AX) and effectors (Chk1, Chk2, p53 and p-p53) in the DNA damage signalling pathway were all reduced. Anthocyanins could be widely used in the field of health products to slow ageing-related deterioration of liver function and structure by inhibiting DNA damage.

Abstract
Coloured (black, purple, blue, pink, red, and brown) cereal grains have gained much attention recently due to attractive nutritional values. A major type of pigments responsible for the colours as well as the health benefits of the cereals are anthocyanins. Focusing on the recent updates, this review summarises the chemical composition of the anthocyanins in diverse cereals including maize, rice, wheat, barley, sorghum, millet, and rye. There is a great diversity in anthocyanin composition among various cereals. Special cereal genotypes with much enhanced anthocyanin content (e.g., endosperm of rice kernels rich in anthocyanins) have been developed by genetic means. The coloured cereals as potential ingredients for functional food production have been subjected to extensive research for health benefits. Both in vitro and in vivo studies on the health effects of the anthocyanins from the cereals have been summarised. The claimed health benefits include anti-oxidation, anti-cancer, glycemic and bodyweight regulation, neuroprotection, retinal protection, hypolipidemia, hepatoprotection, and anti-ageing. These health effects suggest potential uses of the cereal anthocyanins for positive human nutrition. However, clinical and human studies are needed to confirm these claimed health effects.

Abstract
Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal.) Iljinskaja (C. paliurus), known locally as 'sweet tea tree', is commonly cultivated in China. Flavonoids from Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal.) Iljinskaja (FC) is reported to exhibit multiple biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic activities. However, their influence on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury remains unclear. This study was designed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of total flavonoids from C. paliurus leaves. Results revealed that flavonoids from C. paliurus significantly decreased CCl4-induced elevation of activities of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as well as the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), and markedly increased the levels of SOD, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) compared with the model group. Structures of mainly compounds were elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) spectroscopic and chemical analyses. This study clearly shows that flavonoids from C. paliurus exert a potent protective effect against CCl4-induced acute liver injury in mice. Its hepatoprotective effect appears to be closely associated with its antioxidant activity. The results indicated that flavonoids from C. paliurus leaves could be considered as a potent food supplement in the prevention of acute liver injury.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Black rice has been consumed for centuries in Asian countries such as China, Korea or Japan. Nowadays, extracts and derivatives are considered as beneficial functional foods because of their high content in several bioactive molecules such as anthocyanins, other phenolics and terpenoids. The purpose of this review is to summarize and discuss recent developments on black rice bioactivities. RECENT FINDINGS Some sterols and triterpenoids with potential anticancer properties already tested in vitro and in vivo have been isolated and identified from bran extracts of black rice. Protection against osteoporosis has been suggested for the first time for black rice extracts. Because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, black rice also protects liver and kidney from injuries. One clinical study reported the interest of black rice in case of alcohol withdrawal. SUMMARY Several advances have been recently achieved on the understanding of the potential biological effects of black rice and its derivatives. They further confirm that black rice should be considered as a promising source of health-promoting functional foods targeting a large set of noninfectious diseases. However, more clinical studies are needed to support the findings highlighted in this review.
