Abstract
Neurocognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and postoperative cognitive dysfunction, are non-psychiatric brain syndromes in which a significant decline in cognitive function causes great trauma to the mental status of the patient. The lack of effective treatments for neurocognitive disorders imposes a considerable burden on society, including a substantial economic impact. Over the past few decades, the identification of resveratrol, a natural plant compound, has provided researchers with an opportunity to formulate novel strategies for the treatment of neurocognitive disorders. This is because resveratrol effectively protects the brain of those with neurocognitive disorders by targeting some mechanisms such as inflammation and oxidative stress. This article reviews the status of recent research investigating the use of resveratrol for the treatment of different neurocognitive disorders. By examining the possible mechanisms of action of resveratrol and the shared mechanisms of different neurocognitive disorders, treatments for neurocognitive disorders may be further clarified.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Tetrastigma hemsleyanum is an endemic Chinese herb with a wide range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, antitumor, and immunomodulatory activities. However, the effect and mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory activity of T. hemsleyanum root extract against dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) have not yet been fully investigated. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effect and molecular mechanisms of T. hemsleyanum root extract in DSS-induced UC mice and knockdown cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS T. hemsleyanum root extract was obtained and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The therapeutic effects of T. hemsleyanum root extract on DSS-induced UC mice were evaluated by the disease activity index (DAI) score, colon length, serum inflammatory cytokines and oxidant/antioxidant levels, and histopathological features of the ileum and colon. Genome-wide gene expression profiles of ileal and colonic tissues were collected by transcriptomics, and signaling pathways were analyzed by the KEGG database. UC-related pathways were uploaded to the STRING database, then the protein-protein interactions (PPIs) were determined by Cytoscape, and the enriched genes were evaluated by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). The protein-ligand complexes were docked by AutoDock, and the genes were knocked down in Caco-2 cells by shRNA. The non-targeted metabolomic profiling of ileal contents was analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), and gut microflora were sequenced by an Illumina MiSeq System. RESULTS Ten components that alleviated UC symptoms in mice by decreasing the DAI and serum inflammatory cytokines and oxidant levels, promoting intestinal development, and increasing serum antioxidant levels were identified in T. hemsleyanum root extract. T. hemsleyanum root extract activated the B cell receptor signaling pathway in the colon tissue of UC mice, in which two components, rutin and astragaline, bound to the spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) protein but also restored gut microflora diversity and increased the proportion of probiotics. Furthermore, metabolites of T. hemsleyanum root extract were involved in vitamin metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, and ferroptosis. CONCLUSIONS The rutin and astragaline components of T. hemsleyanum root extract, by binding to SYK protein, activated the B cell receptor signaling pathway and restored gut microflora diversity to alleviate UC symptoms in mice.

Abstract
Aquatic foods are nutritious, enjoyable, and highly favored by consumers. In recent years, young consumers have shown a preference for prefabricated food due to its convenience, nutritional value, safety, and increasing market share. However, aquatic foods are prone to microbial spoilage due to their high moisture content, protein content, and unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, traditional processing methods of aquatic foods can lead to issues such as protein denaturation, lipid peroxidation, and other food safety and nutritional health problems. Therefore, there is a growing interest in exploring new technologies that can achieve a balance between antimicrobial efficiency and food quality. This review examines the mechanisms of cold plasma, high-pressure processing, photodynamic inactivation, pulsed electric field treatment, and ultraviolet irradiation. It also summarizes the research progress in nonthermal physical field technologies and their application combined with other technologies in prefabricated aquatic food. Additionally, the review discusses the current trends and developments in the field of prefabricated aquatic foods. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical basis for the development of new technologies and their implementation in the industrial production of prefabricated aquatic food.

Abstract
Endophytic fungi possess a versatile metabolism which is related to their ability to live in diverse ecological niches. While culturing under laboratory conditions, their metabolism is mainly influenced by the culture media, time of incubation and other physicochemical factors. In this study, we focused on the production of 3 thiodiketopiperazines (TDKPs) botryosulfuranols A-C produced by an endophytic strain of Cophinforma mamane isolated from the leaves of Bixa orellana L collected in the Peruvian Amazon. We studied the time-course production of botryosulfuranols A-C during 28 days and evaluated the variations in the production of secondary metabolites, including the TDKPs, produced by C. mamane in response to different culture media, light versus dark conditions and different incubation times. We observed a short time-frame production of botryosulfuranol C while its production was significantly affected by the light conditions and nutrients of the culture media. Botryosulfuranols A and B showed a similar production pattern and a similar response to culturing conditions. Molecular networking allowed us to detect three compounds related to TDKPs that will be the focus of future experiments.

Abstract
The problems of spoilage, disease, and biofilm caused by bacterial quorum-sensing (QS) systems have posed a significant challenge to the development of the food industry. Quorum-quenching (QQ) enzymes can block QS by hydrolyzing or modifying the signal molecule, making these enzymes promising new candidates for use as antimicrobials. With many recent studies of QQ enzymes and their potential to target foodborne bacteria, an updated and systematic review is necessary. Thus, the goals of this review were to summarize what is known about the effects of bacterial QS on the food industry; discuss the current understanding of the catalytic mechanisms of QQ enzymes, including lactonase, acylase, and oxidoreductase; and describe strategies for the engineering and evolution of QQ enzymes for practical use. In particular, this review focuses on the latest progress in the application of QQ enzymes in the field of food. Finally, the current challenges limiting the systematic application of QQ enzymes in the food industry are discussed to help guide the future development of these important enzymes.

Abstract
Microbial spoilage of fish is attributed to quorum sensing (QS)-based activities. QS is a communication process between the cells in which microorganisms secrete and sense the specific chemicals (autoinductors, AIs) that regulate proteolysis, lipolysis, and biofilm formation. These activities change the organoleptic characteristics and reduce the safety of the products. Although the microbial community of fish is diverse and may consist of a range of bacterial strains, the deterioration of fish-based products is attributed to the growth and activity of Pseudomonas spp. This work summarizes recent advancements to assess the influence of QS mechanisms on seafood spoilage by Pseudomonas spp. The quorum sensing inhibition (QSI) in the context of fish preservation has also been discussed. Detailed recognition of this phenomenon is crucial in establishing effective strategies to prevent the premature deterioration of fish-based products.

Abstract
Tailoring enzymes are important modification biocatalysts in natural product biosynthesis. We report herein six orthologous two‐gene clusters for mycocyclosin and guatyromycine biosynthesis. Expression of the cyclodipeptide synthase genes gymA1–gymA6 in Escherichia coli resulted in the formation of cyclo‐l‐Tyr‐l‐Tyr as the major product. Reconstruction of the biosynthetic pathways in Streptomyces albus and biochemical investigation proved that the cytochrome P450 enzymes GymB1–GymB6 act as both intramolecular oxidases and intermolecular nucleobase transferases. They catalyze not only the oxidative C−C coupling within cyclo‐l‐Tyr‐l‐Tyr, leading to mycocyclosin, but also its connection with guanine and hypoxanthine, and are thus responsible for the formation of tyrosine‐containing guatyromycines, instead of the reported tryptophan‐nucleobase adducts. Phylogenetic data suggest the presence of at least 47 GymB orthologues, indicating the occurrence of a widely distributed enzyme class.

Abstract
Aquatic products are delicious and have high nutritive value, however, they are highly perishable during storage due to the growth and metabolism of microorganisms. The spoilage process of aquatic products was demonstrated to be highly related to the composition of microorganisms, in which the specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) are the main factors. In this article, the spoilage indicators of SSOs were systematically described, which could make a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of aquatic products. Quorum sensing (QS) regulates the growth, metabolism and characteristics of SSOs, the common signaling molecules and the QS system in the major SSOs of aquatic products were discussed. Moreover, we compared various technologies for the analysis of SSOs in aquatic products. Besides, quality control techniques based on microbiota regulating of aquatic products, including physical, chemical and biological preservation strategies, were also compared. In conclusion, novel preservation technologies and hurdle techniques are expected to achieve comprehensive inhibition of SSOs.

Abstract
Foodborne pathogens with high-pressure processing (HPP) tolerance and their pathogenicity have gained considerable attention in the field of food safety. However, tolerance to pressure treatment varies among microorganisms and growth phases, and the mechanism by which Vibrio parahaemolyticus can become tolerant of HPP is currently not known. In this study, 183 strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated from seafood products, and one strain, C4, carried a thermostable direct hemolysin (tdh) gene. A strain, N11, which was acquired from the C4 strain through adaptive laboratory evolution under HPP stress, could tolerate up to 200 MPa for 10 min. Compared with the C4 strain, the catalase and Na+/K+-ATPase activities in N11 strain were increased by about 2–3 times, and the cells maintained an intact cell membrane structure under HPP treatment. As shown by murine infection trials, the C4 and N11 strains impacted the physiological activities of mice and damaged liver and spleen cells. Comparative genomic analysis showed that 19 nucleotides were mutated in the N11 strain, which led to sustained high expression of mlaC and mlaD genes in this strain. Knockout of these genes confirmed that they were involved in the high-pressure stress response, and also related to pathogenicity of V. parahaemolyticus. Thereby, our findings revealed a HPP tolerance mechanism of V. parahaemolyticus, and the high-pressure-tolerant strain still retained pathogenicity in mice with skin and fur pleating and lethargy, indicating the pressure-tolerant foodborne pathogens present health risks.

Abstract
The marine environment is an excellent resource for natural products with therapeutic potential. Its microbial inhabitants, often associated with other marine organisms, are specialized in the synthesis of bioactive secondary metabolites. Similar to their terrestrial counterparts, marine Actinobacteria are a prevalent source of these natural products. Here, we discuss 77 newly discovered alkaloids produced by such marine Actinobacteria between 2017 and mid-2021, as well as the strategies employed in their elucidation. While 12 different classes of alkaloids were unraveled, indoles, diketopiperazines, glutarimides, indolizidines, and pyrroles were most dominant. Discoveries were mainly based on experimental approaches where microbial extracts were analyzed in relation to novel compounds. Although such experimental procedures have proven useful in the past, the methodologies need adaptations to limit the chance of compound rediscovery. On the other hand, genome mining provides a different angle for natural product discovery. While the technology is still relatively young compared to experimental screening, significant improvement has been made in recent years. Together with synthetic biology tools, both genome mining and extract screening provide excellent opportunities for continued drug discovery from marine Actinobacteria.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS), usually performed by N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) in Gram-staining-negative bacteria, plays an important role in plant-bacteria interactions. Rhizobium oryzihabitans M15 is a plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) isolated from rice roots. In this study, we found a QS system in the endogenous plasmid of R. oryzihabitans M15 and detected the activity of AHLs by a bioassay method. We identified five AHL analogues in R. oryzihabitans M15 using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The most dominant AHL analogue was N-(3R-hydroxy-7-cis-tetradecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone according to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mosher's reactions. Furthermore, the rosI mutant abolished AHL production and significantly decreased growth, exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, biofilm formation, and motility compared to the wild-type strain. These results lay the foundation for further investigating the QS regulation mechanism and signal pathway of R. oryzihabitans M15 and its interactions with the host plant.

Abstract
Diketopiperazines are potential structures with extensive biological functions, which have attracted much attention of natural product researchers for a long time. These compounds possess a stable six-membered ring, which is an important pharmacophore. The marine organisms have especially been proven to be a wide source for discovering diketopiperazine derivatives. In recent years, more and more interesting bioactive diketopiperazines had been found from various marine habitats. This review article is focused on the new 2,5-diketopiperazines derived from marine organisms (sponges and microorganisms) reported from the secondary half-year of 2014 to the first half of the year of 2021. We will comment their chemical structures, biological activities and sources. The objective is to assess the merit of these compounds for further study in the field of drug discovery.

Abstract
Shewanella baltica is a typical specific spoilage organism causing the deterioration of seafood, but the exact regulation of its adaptive and competitive dominance in diverse environments remains undefined. In this study, the regulatory function of two sigma factors, RpoS and RpoN, in environmental adaptation and spoilage potential were evaluated in S. baltica SB02. Two in-frame deletion mutants, ΔrpoS and ΔrpoN, were constructed to explore the roles in their motility, biofilm formation, stress response and spoilage potential, as well as antibiotics by comparing the phenotypes and transcription with those of wild type (WT) strain. Compared with WT strain, the ΔrpoN showed the slower growth and weaker motility due to loss of flagella, while swimming of the ΔrpoS was increased. Deletion of rpoN significantly decreased biofilm biomass, and production of exopolysaccharide and pellicle, resulting in a thinner biofilm structure, while ΔrpoS formed the looser aggregation in biofilm. Resistance of S. baltica to NaCl, heat, ethanol and three oxidizing disinfectants apparently declined in the two mutants compared to WT strain. The ΔrpoN mutant decreased sensory score, accumulation of trimethylamine, putrescine and TVB-N and protease activity, while a weaker effect was observed in ΔrpoS. The two mutants had significantly higher susceptibility to antibiotics than WT strain, especially ΔrpoN. Deficiency of rpoN and rpoS significantly repressed the activities of two diketopiperazines related to quorum sensing (QS). Furthermore, transcriptome analyses revealed that RpoN was involved in the regulation of the expression of 143 genes, mostly including flagellar assembly, nitrogen and amino acid metabolism, ABC transporters. Transcript changes of seven differentially expressed coding sequences were in agreement with the phenotypes observed in the two mutants. Our findings reveal that RpoN, as a central regulator, controls the fitness and bacterial spoilage in S. baltica, while RpoS is a key regulatory factor of stress response. Characterization of these two sigma regulons in Shewanella has expanded current understanding of a possible co-regulatory mechanism with QS for adaptation and spoilage potential.

Abstract
Five new flavonoids (1-5), along with 25 known compounds, were isolated from the rhizomes of Potentilla anserina L. and their structures were identified using spectroscopic and chemical evidence. The extract, all fractions, and all isolated compounds were evaluated for their antioxidant, α-glucosidase, and tyrosinase inhibitory activities, and their structure-activity relationship was interpreted. The biflavanols and quercetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside-2″-gallate (14) exhibited significant antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibition activities. In this study, anti-tyrosinase activity and its mechanism of active compounds (potenserin C (4), potenserin D (5), and quercetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside-2″-gallate (14)) were explored by a combination of computational simulations and kinetic studies. Kinetic studies indicated that potenserin C (4) and quercetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside-2″-gallate (14) inhibited tyrosinase in a competitive manner, whereas potenserin D (5) acted in a reversible noncompetitive manner. The molecular docking result indicated that the substitution of the glucose moiety with galloyl and the presence of 3', 4', 5'-OH in flavonoid aglycones played a crucial role for the tyrosinase inhibiting effect. Moreover, the presence of biflavanols increased the activity against tyrosinase because of strong hydrogen binding, π-alkyl binding, and electrostatic interaction. Thus, the presented experiments developed several new lead compounds that could act as antioxidants and α-glucosidase inhibitors. Furthermore, biflavanols and quercetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside-2″-gallate played important roles in the anti-browning activity during food processing.
