Phenolic amides (avenanthramides) in oats - an update review

Oats (Avena sativa L.) are one of the worldwide cereal crops. Avenanthramides (AVNs), the unique plant alkaloids of secondary metabolites found in oats, are nutritionally important for humans and animals. Numerous bioactivities of AVNs have been investigated and demonstrated in vivo and in vitro. Despite all these, researchers from all over the world are taking efforts to learn more knowledge about AVNs. In this work, we highlighted the recent updated findings that have increased our understanding of AVNs bioactivity, distribution, and especially the AVNs biosynthesis. Since the limits content of AVNs in oats strictly hinders the demand, understanding the mechanisms underlying AVN biosynthesis is important not only for developing a renewable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly source in both plants and microorganisms but also for designing effective strategies for enhancing their production via induction and metabolic engineering. Future directions for improving AVN production in native producers and heterologous systems for food and feed use are also discussed. This summary will provide a broad view of these specific natural products from oats.

Metabolomic analysis reveals the effect of ultrasonic-microwave pretreatment on flavonoids in tribute Citrus powder

In this study, the ultrasonic-microwave pretreatment was defined as a processing technology in the production of tribute citrus powder, and it could increase the flavonoid compounds in the processing fruit powder. A total of 183 upregulated metabolites and 280 downregulated metabolites were obtained by non-targeted metabolomics, and the differential metabolites was mainly involved in the pathways of flavonoid biosynthesis, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis. A total of 8 flavonoid differential metabolites were obtained including 5 upregulated metabolites (6"-O-acetylglycitin, scutellarin, isosakuranin, rutin, and robinin), and 3 downregulated metabolites (astragalin, luteolin, and (-)-catechin gallate) by flavonoids-targeted metabolomics. The 8 flavonoid differential metabolites participated in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis pathways, and isoflavonoid biosynthesis pathways. The results provide a reference for further understanding the relationship between food processing and food components, and also lay a basis for the development of food targeted-processing technologies.

Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15  PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

Resveratrol Attenuates Rheumatoid Arthritis Induce Neutrophil Extracellular Traps via TLR-4 Mediated Inflammation in C57BL/6 Mice

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether RSV inhibits neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) that induce joint hyperalgesia in C57BL/6 mice after adjuvant-induced arthritis. A subplantar injection of Freund's complete adjuvant was administered to C57BL/6 mice on day 0 for immunization in the AIA model. Resveratrol (RSV, 25 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally once daily starting on day 22 and continuing for two weeks. The effects of mechanical hyperalgesia and edema formation have been assessed in addition to histopathological scoring. Mice were sacrificed on day 35 to determine cytokine levels and PADI4 and COX-2 expression levels. ELISA was used to quantify neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) along with neutrophil elastase-DNA and myeloperoxidase-DNA complexes in neutrophils. An immunohistochemical stain was performed on knee joints to determine the presence of nuclear factor kappa B p65 (NF-kappaB p65). AIA mice were found to have higher levels of NET in joints and their joint cells demonstrated an increased expression of the PADI4 gene. Treatment with RSV in AIA mice (25 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly (P<0.05) inhibited joint hyperalgesia, resulting in a significant increase in mechanical threshold, a decrease in articular edema, a decrease in the production of inflammatory cytokines, increased COX-2 expression, and a decrease in the immunostaining of NF-kappaB. Furthermore, treatment with RSV significantly reduced the amount of neutrophil elastase (NE)-DNA and MPO-DNA complexes, which were used as indicators of NET formation (P<0.05). This study indicates that RSV reduces NET production and hyperalgesia by reducing inflammation mediated by PADI4 and COX-2. According to these data, NETs contribute to joint pain and resveratrol can be used to treat pain in RA through this pathway.

Identification and Characterization of the AREB/ABF Gene Family in Three Orchid Species and Functional Analysis of DcaABI5 in Arabidopsis

AREB/ABF (ABA response element binding) proteins in plants are essential for stress responses, while our understanding of AREB/ABFs from orchid species, important traditional medicinal and ornamental plants, is limited. Here, twelve AREB/ABF genes were identified within three orchids' complete genomes and classified into three groups through phylogenetic analysis, which was further supported with a combined analysis of their conserved motifs and gene structures. The cis-element analysis revealed that hormone response elements as well as light and stress response elements were widely rich in the AREB/ABFs. A prediction analysis of the orchid ABRE/ABF-mediated regulatory network was further constructed through cis-regulatory element (CRE) analysis of their promoter regions. And it revealed that several dominant transcriptional factor (TF) gene families were abundant as potential regulators of these orchid AREB/ABFs. Expression profile analysis using public transcriptomic data suggested that most AREB/ABF genes have distinct tissue-specific expression patterns in orchid plants. Additionally, DcaABI5 as a homolog of ABA INSENSITIVE 5 (ABI5) from Arabidopsis was selected for further analysis. The results showed that transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing DcaABI5 could rescue the ABA-insensitive phenotype in the mutant abi5. Collectively, these findings will provide valuable information on AREB/ABF genes in orchids.

Chemical characterization-function relationship of pectins from persimmon fruit within different ripeness

This study investigated the structural and functional characteristics of two different molecular weight persimmon pectin extracted from unripe persimmon (PP-1) and ripe persimmon (PP-2). The molecular weight was determined as 117.8 kDa and 61.3 kDa for PP-1 and PP-2, which consisting of glucose, rhamnose, mannose, galactose, and xylose. AFM results indicated PP-1 with many linear chains, and short chains in while short chains, branching points, and heterogeneous clumps were found in PP-2.Emulsion characterization and storage stability experiments revealed that PP-1 with more stable emulsifying properties than PP-2 and commercial citrus pectin. In vitro fermentation of PP-1 and PP-2 by gut microbiota indicated that PP-1 and PP-2 groups were higher than inulin group in total SCFAs production after 48 h of fermentation. This study provided useful information for high value utilization of persimmon pectin.

Blueberry anthocyanins extract inhibits advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) production and AGEs-stimulated inflammation in RAW264.7 cells

BACKGROUND

Pharmacological interference is considered to be a successful approach to inhibit advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) production and to block AGEs-induced diseases. Some synthetic medicines are effective for inhibiting the glycation reaction, but they cannot be widely applied in clinical as a result of their side effects and security concerns. The present study uses blueberry anthocyanins extract (BAE) to attenuate AGEs formation and AGEs-induced inflammatory response in vitro.

RESULTS

In a bovine serum albumin-glucose model, BAE showed similar inhibitory activity on AGEs compared to the synthetic anti-glycation agent (aminoguanidine). The results showed that BAE exhibit strong anti-glycative action by scavenging glycosylated intermediates (Schiff base, fructosamine and α-dicarbonyl compounds), attenuating the molecular aggregation and amyloid-like fibrils formation, and preventing conformational modification. Additionally, BAE was found to dose-dependently inhibit the AGEs-induced secretions of nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and tumor necrosis factor-α) in RAW264.7 cells. The anti-inflammation activity of BAE was mediated by down-regulating the expressions of critical inflammatory markers, inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2, through nuclear factor-kappa B signaling pathways inhibition.

CONCLUSION

BAE could serve as a natural inhibitor for controlling AGEs and AGEs-induced chronic inflammation. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Advancements in nonthermal physical field technologies for prefabricated aquatic food: A comprehensive review

Aquatic foods are nutritious, enjoyable, and highly favored by consumers. In recent years, young consumers have shown a preference for prefabricated food due to its convenience, nutritional value, safety, and increasing market share. However, aquatic foods are prone to microbial spoilage due to their high moisture content, protein content, and unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, traditional processing methods of aquatic foods can lead to issues such as protein denaturation, lipid peroxidation, and other food safety and nutritional health problems. Therefore, there is a growing interest in exploring new technologies that can achieve a balance between antimicrobial efficiency and food quality. This review examines the mechanisms of cold plasma, high-pressure processing, photodynamic inactivation, pulsed electric field treatment, and ultraviolet irradiation. It also summarizes the research progress in nonthermal physical field technologies and their application combined with other technologies in prefabricated aquatic food. Additionally, the review discusses the current trends and developments in the field of prefabricated aquatic foods. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical basis for the development of new technologies and their implementation in the industrial production of prefabricated aquatic food.

Ultrasonically functionalized chitosan-gallic acid films inactivate Staphylococcus aureus through envelope-disruption under UVA light exposure

The significant threat of foodborne pathogens contamination has continuously promoted the development of efficient antimicrobial food packaging materials. Here, an antimicrobial film was prepared with gallic acid-grafted-chitosan (CS/GA) that obtained by a two-step ultrasound method. The resultant films exhibited good transparency, improved UV barrier performance, and enhanced mechanical strength. Specifically, with the grafting of 1.2 % GA, the UV blocking ability of CS/GA film at 400 nm was significantly increased by 19.7 % and the tensile strength was nearly two times higher than that of CS film. Moreover, the CS/GA films exhibited an inspiring photoactivated bactericidal ability under 400 nm UVA light irradiation that eradicated almost 99.9 % of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) cells within 60 min. To gain more insights into the antibacterial mechanism, the treated S. aureus cells were further investigated by visualizing bacterial ultrastructure and analyzing membrane properties. The results pointed to the peptidoglycan layer as the primary action target when bacteria come into contact with CS/GA films. Afterward, the intracellular oxidative lesions, disrupted bacterial integrity, and disordered membrane functional properties collectively resulted in eventual cell death. The findings revealed the unique peptidoglycan targeting and membrane disruptive mechanisms of CS/GA films, confirming the application values in controlling foodborne pathogens.

Effects of dietary Astragalus membranaceus and Codonopsis pilosula extracts on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune status, and intestinal health in broilers

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of dietary Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) consisting of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge (AMT) and Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf (CPO) extracts on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune status, and intestinal health of broiler chickens. Two groups were formed, each consisting of six replicates of 12 one-day-old healthy male 817 white feather broilers. Broilers were fed either a basal diet (CON group) or a basal diet supplemented with 500 mg/kg CHM. The trial lasted 50 days. The results showed that CHM supplementation resulted in enhanced feed efficiency and antioxidant capacity in both the serum and liver, while it reduced uric acid and endotoxin levels, as well as diamine oxidase activity (p < 0.05). Additionally, CHM treatment increased the height of jejunum villi and upregulated Claudin-1 expression in the jejunal mucosa accompanied by an increase in the mRNA levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interferon-β (IFN-β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) (p < 0.05). The presence of dietary CHM caused an increase in the proportions of Bacteroidetes and unclassified Bacteroidales but led to a decrease in those of Firmicutes and Alistipes (p < 0.05). The composition of the jejunal mucosa microbiota was correlated with the feed conversion ratio, serum metabolites, and gene expression based on Spearman correlation analysis. The findings indicated that the consumption of dietary CHM improved the utilization of feed, increased the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the jejunal mucosa, and decreased the endotoxin level and activities of diamine oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase in the serum, which could potentially be linked to changes in the gut microbiota of broiler chickens.

Composition, functional properties and safety of honey: a review

Honey has been used not only as a food source but also for medicinal purposes. Recent studies have indicated that honey exhibits antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic and anti-obesity properties, as well as anticancer, anti-atherosclerotic, hypotensive, neuroprotective and immunomodulatory activities. These health benefits of honey could be attributed to its wide range of nutritional components, including polysaccharides and polyphenols, which have been proven to possess various beneficial properties. It is notable that the composition of honey can also be affected by nectar, season, geography and storage condition. Moreover, the safety of honey requires caution to avoid any potential safety incidents. Therefore, this review aims to provide recent research regarding the chemical composition, biological activities and safety of honey, which might be attributed to comprehensive utilization of honey. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Measurement of Ultra-High-Energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10  TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60  TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

[The safety and efficacy of prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for elderly patients with locally advanced gastric cancer: a propensity score matching analysis]

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) on elderly patients diagnosed with locally advanced gastric cancer based on a propensity score matching analysis. Methods: Clinical data of elderly patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who underwent radical gastrectomy in Beijing Hospital from January 2017 to December 2021 were retrospectively collected. According to whether HIPEC was used, the patients were divided into HIPEC group (radical gastrectomy combined with HIPEC) and control group (radical gastrectomy alone), and 29 patients in HIPEC group and 122 patients in control group. After 1∶1 matching of PSM, there were 28 patients in each group. The clinicopathological data, surgical data, postoperative recovery and long-term survival of the two groups were compared and analyzed. Results: Before PSM, the mean age in the HIPEC group was (70.7±4.0) years, and in the control group was (73.1±5.8) years (P=0.011). After PSM, the mean age in the HIPEC group was (70.9±3.9) years, and it was (71.8±5.4) years in the control group (P=0.739). Before PSM, the incidence of postoperative complications was 20.7% (6 cases) in the HIPEC group and 26.2% (32 cases) in the control group (P=0.639). After PSM, the incidence of postoperative complications was 21.4% (6 cases) in the HIPEC group and 14.3% (4 cases) in the control group (P=0.730). Before PSM, the mean duration of hospitalization after radical gastrectomy was (13.6±7.6) days in HIPEC group and (16.2±13.0) days in control group, respectively (P=0.312). After PSM, the mean duration of hospitalization after radical gastrectomy was (13.7±7.8) days in HIPEC group and (15.4±9.7) days in control group, respectively (P=0.479). Before PSM, the 1-and 3-year overall survival rates of the HIPEC group were 88.2% and 69.7%, and 88.0% and 66.1% for control group, respectively, with no statistical difference between the two groups in overall survival (P=0.499). After PSM, the 1-and 3-year overall survival rates of the HIPEC group were 86.8% and 69.7%, and 93.1% and 67.5% for control group, respectively, with no statistical difference between the two groups in overall survival (P=0.425). Before PSM, the 1-and 3-year disease-free survival rates of the HIPEC group were 88.2% and 67.1%, and 87.8% and 64.3% for control group, respectively, with no statistical difference between the two groups in disease-free survival (P=0.863). After PSM, the 1-and 3-year disease-free survival rates of the HIPEC group were 88.2% and 62.8%, and 93.7% and 64.7% for control group, respectively, with no statistical difference between the two groups in disease-free survival (P=0.804). Conclusions: Radical surgery combined with HIPEC for elderly patients with gastric cancer does not increase postoperative complications and postoperative recovery time. However, there was no significant difference in overall survival and disease-specific survival between the two groups.

Effects of Dietary Bacillus subtilis HC6 on Growth Performance, Antioxidant Capacity, Immunity, and Intestinal Health in Broilers

This study aimed to investigate the impact of Bacillus subtilis HC6 on the growth performance, immunity, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal health of broilers. A total of 180 one-day-old white feather broilers were randomly divided into two experimental groups, each comprising six replicates of fifteen chicks from 1 to 50 d of age. The groups were either fed a basal diet (CON) or the same diet supplemented with 5 × 108 cfu/kg of Bacillus subtilis HC6 (BS). Our results indicated that compared with the CON, dietary supplementation with BS increased feed efficiency during d 21-50 and d 1-50 (p < 0.05). Moreover, BS supplementation enhanced antioxidant capacity in the serum and liver, and also decreased the activity of diamine oxidase and the level of endotoxins (p < 0.05). Additionally, BS treatment increased the villi height in the jejunum and ileum, increased the ratio of villus height/crypt depth in the ileum, upregulated the expression of tight junction proteins in the jejunal mucosa, and downregulated the levels of IL-22 and IFN-γ on day 50 (p < 0.05). Principal coordinates analysis yielded clear clustering of two groups; dietary BS increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidales_unclassified (genus) and Olsenella (genus), and decreased the abundance of genera Alistipes on day 50, which identified a strong correlation with FCR, serum differential metabolites, or differential gene expression in the jejunal mucosa by spearman correlation analysis. The PICRUSt2 analysis revealed that supplementation with BS enriched the pathways related to xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, signaling molecules and interaction, the digestive system, and transport and catabolism. These results demonstrated that dietary BS increased feed efficiency, antioxidant capacity, and the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the jejunal mucosa; and decreased the activity of diamine oxidase in serum, which might be attributed to the modulation of community composition and the functions of cecal microbiota in white-feathered broilers.

Effects of a combination of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde on growth performance, gut morphology, and gut microbiota of yellow-feathered broilers

A total of 480 one-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 replicates of 20 chicks per replicate. A basal diet was administered to the control group (CON), whereas CML350, CML500, and CML1000 groups were fed with basal diet supplemented with 350, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex, respectively. However, adding 500 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex improved weight gain (P < 0.01), enhanced intestinal morphology, increased serum total protein and albumin content, and total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.01), and significantly increased the Chao1 and Ace indices (P < 0.01), indicating an increase in the richness of the gut microbiota. At the phylum level, CML500 group reduced the abundance of Fusobacteriota at 21 d and Proteobacteria at 42 d (P < 0.01). At the genus level, CML500 group increased the abundance of Faecalibacterium and Alistipes at 42 d (P < 0.01) and decreased the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella (P < 0.01). At the species level, CML500 group reduced the abundance of Escherichia coli at 42 d (P < 0.01) and increased the abundance of Alistipes_sp_CHKCI003 at 42 d (P < 0.01). According to these results, adding 500 mg/kg of lauric acid monoglyceride and cinnamaldehyde complex in feed can improve the growth performance, intestinal morphology, and gut microbiota of yellow-feathered broilers.

Characterization and Correlation of Microbiota and Higher Alcohols Based on Metagenomic and Metabolite Profiling during Rice-Flavor Baijiu Fermentation

Higher alcohol, as an inevitable product of fermentation, plays an important role in the flavor and quality of Baijiu. However, the relationship between the complex microbial metabolism and the formation of higher alcohols in rice-flavor Baijiu was not clear. To investigate the relationship between microorganisms and higher alcohol production, two fermentation mashes inoculated with starters from Heyuan Jinhuangtian Liquor Co., Ltd. (Heyuan, China) as JM and Guangdong Changleshao Co., Ltd. (Meizhou, China) as CM, respectively, with significant differences in higher alcohol profiles during rice-flavor Baijiu fermentation were selected. In general, higher alcohols presented a rapid accumulation during the early fermentation stages, especially in JM, with higher and faster increases than those in CM. As for their precursors including amino acids, pyruvic acid and ketoacids, complex variations were observed during the fermentation. Metagenomic results indicated that Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Rhizopus microsporus were the microorganisms present throughout the brewing process in JM and CM, and the relative abundance of R. microsporus in JM was significantly higher than that in CM. The results of higher alcohol metabolism in JM may contribute to the regulation of higher alcohols in rice-flavor Baijiu.

Involvement of branched RG-I pectin with hemicellulose in cell-cell adhesion of tomato during fruit softening

Cell adhesion of four cultivars of tomato fruit, "Micro Tom (MT)", "Heinz 1706 (H1706)", "Money Maker (MM)", "Ailsa Craig (AC)" were evaluated and cell walls were analyzed in order to assess the possible contribution of pectic and hemicellulosic polysaccharides to the softening and altered cell adhesion at two different stages of ripeness. Cell wall material (CWM) and solubilised fractions of green and red ripe fruit were analyzed by chemical, enzymatic techniques. In comparison with the four cultivars of tomato fruits, H1706 and MM are harder than MT and AC at both green and red ripe stage. The ripening-associated solubilisation of rhamnogalacturonan-riched pectic polysaccharides was reduced in H1706 and MM, and the content of side -chain sugars from RG-I reduced by more than 50% in MT and AC. In addition to recognized pectic modifying enzymes, RGase had a good effect on cell separation of H1706 and MM fruit at red ripe stage. The higher RG-I content and branching degree have been associated with increased cell adhesion and reduced cell wall porosity, thus maintained fruit firmness.

Characteristic volatiles fingerprints in olive vegetable stored at different conditions by HS-GC-IMS

The olive vegetable is popular food owing to its unique flavor. This study innovatively used headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry to evaluate olive vegetables' volatiles under different conditions. A total of 57 volatile compounds were determined from olive vegetables, including 30 aldehydes, 8 ketones, 5 alcohols, 2 esters, 8 hydrocarbons, 1 furans, 3 sulfur compounds. The PCA distinguished the olive vegetable stored at different conditions by volatiles. The gallery plot showed that olive vegetables stored at 4 °C for 21 d produced more limonene, which had a desirable fruity odor. The (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-pentenal, (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal, 5-methylfurfural, and heptanal in fresh olive vegetables were lowest and increased with storage time. Furthermore, the change of volatiles was the least when the olive vegetable was stored at 0 °C. This study can provide theoretical bases for improving the flavor quality of olive vegetables and developing traditional food for standardized industrial production.

Effects of high pressure synergistic enzymatic physical state and concentration on the denaturation of polyphenol oxidase

The synergistic effect of the initial state of the enzyme and pressure level on the denaturation of PPO has not been clear yet, but it significantly affects the application of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) in the enzyme-containing food processing. Solid (S-) and low/high concentration liquid (LL-/HL-) polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was used as the study object, and the microscopic conformation, molecular morphology and macroscopic activity of PPO under HHP treatments (100-400 MPa, 25 °C/30 min) were investigated by spectroscopic techniques. The results show that the initial state has a significant effect on the activity, structure, active force and substrate channel of PPO under pressure. The effec can be ranked as follows: physical state > concentration > pressure, S-PPO > LL-PPO > HL-PPO. High concentration has a weakening effect on the pressure denaturation of the PPO solution. Under high pressure, the α-helix and concentration factors play a crucial role in stabilizing the structure.

[Analysis of prognosis and related factors in oldest-old patients with left-side or right-side colon cancer after hemicolectomy]

Objective: This study aimed to explore the difference of prognosis in oldest-old colon cancer patients between the left-side and right-side hemicolectomy. Methods: A total of 238 oldest-old (≥75 years old) colon cancer patients who received surgical treatment in Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of Beijing Hospital from December 2010 to December 2020 were retrospectively collected. They were divided into right-side hemicolectomy (RCC) group (130 cases) and left-side hemicolectomy (LCC) group (108 cases) by surgical methods. The difference in postoperative short-term complications and long-term prognosis was compared between the two groups, and the related factors of postoperative death was analyzed using multivariate Cox regression model. Results: The age of 238 oldest-old patients with colon cancer ranged from 75 to 93 years old (80.5±3.7). There were 128 males and 110 females. The ages of patients in the LCC group and RCC group were (80.4±3.7) and (80.6±3.7) years old (P=0.699), respectively. There was no significant difference in gender, body mass index (BMI) and co-existing chronic diseases between two groups (P>0.05). The proportion of the duration of surgery exceeding 170 min in the LCC group was significantly higher than that in the RCC group (56.5% vs 43.1%, P=0.039). The incidence of postoperative short-term complications in RCC group was slightly higher than LCC group (P>0.05), and there was no significant difference in overall survival (OS), tumor-specific survival (CSS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between two groups. However, the two groups had different prognostic risk factors, pathological Ⅳ stage (HR=28.970,95%CI:1.768-474.813,P=0.018), intraoperative bleeding (HR=2.297,95%CI:1.351-3.907,P=0.002) and cancer nodules (HR=2.044,95%CI:1.047-3.989,P=0.036) were independent prognostic risk factors in LCC group. Underweight (HR=0.428,95%CI:0.192-0.955,P=0.038), overweight(HR=0.316,95%CI:0.125-0.800,P=0.015),obesity (HR=0.211,95%CI:0.067-0.658,P=0.007), lymph node metastasis (HR=2.682,95%CI:1.497-4.807,P=0.001), tumor nodule (HR=2.507,95%CI:1.301-4.831,P=0.027) and postoperative length of stay of 9 days (HR=1.829,95%CI:1.070-3.128,P=0.006) were independent risk factors for poor prognosis in RCC group. Conclusions: The duration of surgery of oldest-old colon cancer patients in the LCC group was longer than that in the RCC group. However, there was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications between the two groups. High pathological stage, more intraoperative bleeding and cancer nodules were independent prognostic risk factors in the LCC group. Abnormal BMI, lymph node metastasis, cancer nodules and postoperative length of stay were independent risk factors for poor prognosis in the RCC group.

Biological Activities and Solubilization Methodologies of Naringin

Naringin (NG), a natural flavanone glycoside, possesses a multitude of pharmacological properties, encompassing anti-inflammatory, sedative, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-osteoporosis, and lipid-lowering functions, and serves as a facilitator for the absorption of other drugs. Despite these powerful qualities, NG's limited solubility and bioavailability primarily undermine its therapeutic potential. Consequently, innovative solubilization methodologies have received considerable attention, propelling a surge of scholarly investigation in this arena. Among the most promising solutions is the enhancement of NG's solubility and physiological activity without compromising its inherent active structure, therefore enabling the formulation of non-toxic and benign human body preparations. This article delivers a comprehensive overview of NG and its physiological activities, particularly emphasizing the impacts of structural modification, solid dispersions (SDs), inclusion compound, polymeric micelle, liposomes, and nanoparticles on NG solubilization. By synthesizing current research, this research elucidates the bioavailability of NG, broadens its clinical applicability, and paves the way for further exploration and expansion of its application spectrum.

A tera-electron volt afterglow from a narrow jet in an extremely bright gamma-ray burst

Some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a tera-electron volt (TeV) afterglow, but the early onset of this has not been observed. We report observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory of the bright GRB 221009A, which serendipitously occurred within the instrument field of view. More than 64,000 photons >0.2 TeV were detected within the first 3000 seconds. The TeV flux began several minutes after the GRB trigger, then rose to a peak about 10 seconds later. This was followed by a decay phase, which became more rapid ~650 seconds after the peak. We interpret the emission using a model of a relativistic jet with half-opening angle ~0.8°. This is consistent with the core of a structured jet and could explain the high isotropic energy of this GRB.

Dietary sinensetin and polymethoxyflavonoids: Bioavailability and potential metabolic syndrome-related bioactivity

Sinensetin is among the most ubiquitous polyphenols in citrus fruit and recently has been extensively studied for its ability to prevent or treat diseases. The current literature on the bioavailability of sinensetin and its derivatives was reviewed and the potential ameliorative effects of metabolic syndrome in humans were evaluated. Sinensetin and its derivatives mainly aggregated in the large intestine and extensively metabolized through gut microbiota (GM) and the liver. So intestinal microorganisms had a significant influence on the absorption and metabolism of sinensetin. Interestingly, not only GM acted on sinensetin to metabolize them, but sinensetin also regulated the composition of GM. Thus, sinensetin was metabolized as methyl, glucuronide and sulfate metabolites in the blood and urine. Furthermore, sinensetin was reported to have the beneficial effect of ameliorating metabolic syndromes, including disorders of lipid metabolism (obesity, NAFLD, atherosclerosis), glucose metabolism disorder (insulin resistant) and inflammation, in terms of improving the composition of intestinal flora and modulating metabolic pathway factors in relevant tissues. The present work strongly elucidated the potential mechanism of sinensetin in improving metabolic disorders and supported the contribution of sinensetin to health benefits, thus offering a better perspective in understanding the role played by sinensetin in human health.

Spike height improves prediction of future seizure risk

OBJECTIVE

We evaluated whether interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) rate and morphological characteristics predict seizure risk.

METHODS

We evaluated 10 features from automatically detectable IEDs in a stereotyped population with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS). We tested whether the average value or the most extreme values from each feature predicted future seizure risk in cross-sectional and longitudinal models.

RESULTS

10,748 individual centrotemporal IEDs were analyzed from 59 subjects at 81 timepoints. In cross-sectional models, increases in average spike height, spike duration, slow wave rising slope, slow wave falling slope, and the most extreme values of slow wave rising slope each improved prediction of an increased risk of a future seizure compared to a model with age alone (p < 0.05, each). In longitudinal model, spike rising height improved prediction of future seizure risk compared to a model with age alone (p = 0.04) CONCLUSIONS: Spike height improves prediction of future seizure risk in SeLECTS. Several other morphological features may also improve prediction and should be explored in larger studies.

SIGNIFICANCE

Discovery of a relationship between novel IED features and seizure risk may improve clinical prognostication, visual and automated IED detection strategies, and provide insights into the underlying neuronal mechanisms that contribute to IED pathology.

Phenolamide extract of apricot bee pollen alleviates glucolipid metabolic disorders and modulates the gut microbiota and metabolites in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

Obesity is a serious health problem, and it is important to discover natural active ingredients for alleviating it. In this study, we investigated the effect of phenolamide extract (PAE) from apricot bee pollen on obese mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The main compounds in PAE were identified by HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS, and HFD-fed mice were treated with PAE for 12 weeks. The results demonstrated that the content of phenolamides in PAE was 87.75 ± 5.37%, with tri-p-coumaroyl spermidine as the dominant compound. PAE intervention in HFD-fed mice effectively reduced weight gain and lipid accumulation in the liver and epididymal fat, increased glucose tolerance, reduced insulin resistance and improved lipid metabolism. In terms of the gut microbiota, PAE could reverse the increase in the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio in HFD-fed mice. In addition, PAE could increase beneficial bacteria such as Muribaculaceae and Parabacteroides, and reduce harmful bacteria such as Peptostreptococcaceae and Romboutsia. Metabolomic analysis revealed that PAE could regulate the levels of metabolites, including bile acids, phosphatidyl choline (PC), lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC), lysophosphatidylethanolamine (lysoPE) and tyrosine. This is the first study finding that PAE can regulate glucolipid metabolism and modulate the gut microbiota and metabolites in HFD-induced obese mice, and the results indicate that PAE can be used as a functional dietary supplement to alleviate HFD-induced obesity.

Effect of Heat Transfer Medium and Rate on Freezing Characteristics, Color, and Cell Structure of Chestnut Kernels

This paper compared the effects of air and nitrogen on the freezing characteristics, color, and cell structures of chestnut kernels at different rates of heat transfer and adopted liquid nitrogen spray quick-freezing (NF−40 °C/−60 °C/−80 °C/−100 °C) and still air freezing (AF−20 °C/−40 °C) as the freezing methods. The ratio of heat transfer coefficients in N2 groups was two times as high as those in air groups, and NF−100 °C and NF−80 °C showed better freezing characteristics, good protection for cytoskeletons, and the color was similar to those of the fresh group. Taking both Multivariate Analysis of Variance (Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis) and economic factors, NF−80 °C can be used as a suitable method for chestnut kernel freezing. When the ambient freezing temperature was lower than Tg, both NF and AF treatment groups presented poor quality. The rate and medium of heat transfer jointly influenced the freezing characteristics and quality. The former had a greater effect than the latter, however.

Penta-O-galloyl-β-d-glucose inhibits the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs): A mechanistic investigation

Penta-O-galloyl-β-d-glucose (PGG) was prepared from tannic acid methanolysis products based on HSCCC, and its protective effects and mechanism on the glucose-induced glycation were investigated for the first time. PGG was confirmed to exhibit strong anti-AGEs effects in bovine serum albumin (BSA)-glucose (Glu) and BSA-methylglyoxal (MGO) glycation systems. It was showed that PGG could inhibit the AGEs formation by blocking glycated intermediates (fructosamine and α-dicarbonyl compounds), eliminating radicals, and chelating metal-ions. In-depth mechanism analysis proved that PGG could prevent BSA from glycation by hindering the accumulation of amyloid fibrils, stabilizing the BSA secondary structures, and binding the partial glycation sites. Furthermore, PGG exhibited a prominent trapping capacities on the reactive intermediate MGO by generating PGG-mono-MGO adduct. This research indicated that PGG could be an effective agent to block Glu/MGO-triggered glycation and offered new insights into PGG as a functional ingredient in food materials for preventing diabetic syndrome.

Hemicelluloses-based sprayable and biodegradable pesticide mulch films for Chinese cabbage growth

In this study, one high-performance hemicelluloses (HC)-based sprayable and biodegradable pesticide mulch film was developed. Firstly, HC was transesterified with vinyl acetate (VA) to improve its solubility and film-forming ability. Then abamectin (ABA) was encapsulated by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to endow mulch film persistent anti-pesticide activity. After that, sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin were added to develop the mechanical performances of the mulch film. As a result, the obtained mulch film showed good characteristics, with optimum mechanical strength, elongation at break, water vapor permeability (WVP), swelling ratio (SR), and weight loss (biodegradability) of 7.9 ± 0.3 MPa, 43.6 ± 2.0 %, 2.1 ± 0.1 × 10^-11 g mm m^-2 s^-1 kPa^-1, 73.8 ± 2.0 %, and 69.3 %, respectively. After covering with mulch film, the soil moisture and temperature were developed to 90.8 % and 19.3 ± 0.2 °C, respectively, which could facilitate Chinese cabbage growth, with optimum germination rate of 98.6 ± 6.4 %.

Constraints on Heavy Decaying Dark Matter from 570 Days of LHAASO Observations

The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^{5} and 10^{9}  GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Functional analysis of the dehydratase domains of the PUFA synthase from Emiliania huxleyi in Escherichia coli and Arabidopsis thaliana

BACKGROUND

Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) synthase is a multi-domain mega-enzyme that effectively synthesizes a series of PUFAs in marine microorganisms. The dehydratase (DH) domain of a PUFA synthase plays a crucial role in double bond positioning in fatty acids. Sequencing results of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (E. huxleyi, Eh) indicated that this species contains a PUFA synthase with multiple DH domains. Therefore, the current study, sought to define the functions of these DH domains (EhDHs), by cloning and overexpressing the genes encoding FabA-like EhDHs in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana).

RESULTS

A complementation test showed that the two FabA-like DH domains could restore DH function in a temperature-sensitive (Ts) mutant. Meanwhile, overexpression of FabA-like EhDH₁ and EhDH₂ domains increased the production of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) in recombinant E. coli by 43.5-32.9%, respectively. Site-directed mutagenesis analysis confirmed the authenticity of active-site residues in these domains. Moreover, the expression of tandem EhDH₁-DH₂ in A. thaliana altered the fatty acids content, seed weight, and germination rate.

CONCLUSIONS

The two FabA-like DH domains in the E. huxleyi PUFA synthase function as 3-hydroxyacyl-acyl carrier protein dehydratase in E. coli. The expression of these domains in E. coli and A. thaliana can alter the fatty acid profile in E. coli and increase the seed lipid content and germination rate in A. thaliana. Hence, introduction of DH domains controlling the dehydration process of fatty acid biosynthesis in plants might offer a new strategy to increase oil production in oilseed plants.

Physicochemical properties of dietary fiber of bergamot and its effect on diabetic mice

Bergamot (Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis) contains different bioactive compounds, and their effects remain unclear. Therefore, the structural and bio-function of bergamot dietary fiber were investigated. A sequential extraction procedure was utilized to obtain soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) from bergamot. The main monosaccharide in SDF and IDF is arabinose. SDF had a porous structure, which enhanced the water and oil holding capacity, as well as the cholesterol and glucose adsorption capacity, which was superior to that of IDF. In db/db diabetic mice, SDF and IDF regulated glucose tolerance and controlled blood glucose levels. Reduction of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in SDF and IDF could be observed. In summary, SDF and IDF from bergamot effectively promoted health in patients with diabetes.

Change in membrane fluidity induced by polyphenols is highly dependent on the position and number of galloyl groups

The cell membrane fluidity was very important in adipogenesis and galloyl groups on polyphenolic structures could enhance their antiadipogenic activity. However, the effect of polyphenols on membrane fluidity and the role of galloyl groups in fluidity changes remain unclear. Therefore, the present study chose structurally different polyphenols to compare their effects on the membrane morphology and fluidity of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, and then the reasons behind the changes of membrane fluidity induced by galloylated polyphenols were explored from structural and molecular insights using liposome model and molecular dynamic simulation technology. Our results indicated that galloylated polyphenols could significantly change 3T3-L1 cell membrane morphology and decrease membrane fluidity, while non-galloylated ones could not. The membrane interference effect of polyphenols was enhanced as the number of galloyl groups increased. Morever, the decrease in membrane fluidity induced by galloylated polyphenols was due to the disturbance of polyphenols on lipid alkyl chains in the cell membrane. Galloylated polyphenols could not only locate in the polar head, but also insert into hydrophobic center of lipid bilayer to interfere with the lipid alkyl chains arrangement, thus decreasing the membrane fluidity and showing strong affinity for the membrane. In addition, differences in position of galloyl groups in polyphenols induced distinct effect on cell membranes interactions, thus affecting the binding manner and bioactivity. The results expanded the understanding on the strong antiadipogenic activity of galloylated polyphenols through the aspect of their effects on cell membrane by both experimental and theoretically simulated ways.

Microbial Interaction between Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae: Transcriptome Level Mechanism of Cell-Cell Antagonism

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are frequently co-isolated in food, although playing different roles. This study aimed at investigating the microbial interaction between L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae, especially cell-cell direct interaction and their mechanism. Cell-cell and supernatant-cell coculture models were set up, with CFU counting, OD₆₀₀ measurement, optical and atomic force microscopy performed to examine the growth and morphology of L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae cells. In cell-cell coculture model, L. plantarum cells inhibited S. cerevisiae growth (inhibition rate ~80%) with its own growth pattern unaffected. Cell-cell aggregation happened during coculture with surface roughness changed and partial S. cerevisiae cell lysis. Mature (24 h) L. plantarum cell-free culture supernatant showed inhibition (35%-75%) on S. cerevisiae growth independent of pH level, while supernatant from L. plantarum-S. cerevisiae coculture showed relatively stronger inhibition. Upon transcriptomics analysis, hypothesis on the mechanism of microbial interaction between L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae was demonstrated. When L. plantarum cell density reached threshold at 24 h, all genes in lamBDCA quorum sensing (QS) system was upregulated to potentially increase adhesion capability, leading to the aggregation to S. cerevisiae cell. The downregulation of whole basic physiological activity from DNA to RNA to protein, cell cycle, meiosis, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, as well as growth maintenance essential genes ari1, skg6, and kex2/gas1 might induce the decreased growth and proliferation rate and partial death of S. cerevisiae cells in coculture. IMPORTANCE L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae are frequently co-isolated in food, although playing different roles. The co-existence of L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae could result in variable effects, raising economic benefits and safety concerns in food industry. Previous research has reported the microbial interaction between L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae mainly rely on the signaling through extracellular metabolites. However, cell-cell aggregation has been observed with mechanism remain unknown. In the current study, the microbial interaction between L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae was investigated with emphasis on cell-cell direct interaction and further in-depth transcriptome level study showed the key role of lamBDCA quorum sensing system in L. plantarum. The results yield from this study demonstrated the antagonistic effect between L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae.

Effect of replacing inorganic minerals with small peptide chelated minerals on production performance, some biochemical parameters and antioxidant status in broiler chickens

Due to the low bio-availability of inorganic trace minerals, its application in poultry production has been causing many problems such as environment pollution and waste of resources. The current study was designed to evaluate if replacing inorganic trace minerals (ITM) with small peptide chelate trace minerals (SPM) affects production performance, some biochemical parameters and antioxidant status, tibia mineral deposition, and fecal mineral content in 817 white-feathered broilers. A total of 432 broilers (21-day-old) were randomly divided into four groups with six replicates of 18 chicks each. The four groups included inorganic trace minerals group (addition of 1,000 mg/kg ITM; common practice by commercial poultry farms), three organic trace minerals groups with supplementation of 150, 300, and 500 mg/kg SPM, respectively. The experiment lasted for 30 days. The results showed that there was no significant difference in growth performance and slaughter performance among the four groups (p > 0.05). Total cholesterol in the SPM group was significantly lower than those in the ITM groups (p < 0.01). Compared with the ITM group, the serum urea nitrogen in 150 and 300 mg/kg SPM groups decreased significantly (p < 0.01). Among all SPM treatments, 300 mg/kg SPM groups had the highest serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity (p < 0.01). The activity of copper and zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) of liver in ITM group was the lowest among the four groups (p < 0.01). The catalase (CAT) activity of liver in the 150 mg/kg SPM group was significantly higher than the ITM group and 300 mg/kg SPM group (p < 0.05). Compared to the ITM group, the iron content of the tibia was significantly increased in 300 mg/kg SPM group (p < 0.05) and 500 mg/kg SPM group (p < 0.01). Compared to the ITM group, dietary supplementation with SPM significantly reduced fecal content of zinc and manganese (p < 0.01). The 150 mg/kg SPM and 300 mg/kg SPM group had significantly reduced content of iron (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that replacing inorganic minerals with low doses of SPM (300 and 500 mg/kg) did not negatively affect growth and slaughter performance, as well as the antioxidant status of broiler chickens. In addition, SPM can also promote mineral content in the tibia and reduce mineral content in the feces.

Development of functional hydroxyethyl cellulose-based composite films for food packaging applications

Cellulose-based functional composite films can be a good substitute for conventional plastic packaging to ensure food safety. In this study, the semi-transparent, mechanical strengthened, UV-shielding, antibacterial and biocompatible films were developed from hydroxyethyl cellulose Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL) were respectively used as reinforcing agent and antibacterial agent, and chemical cross-linking among these three components were constructed using epichlorohydrin The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break were 95.9 ± 4.1 MPa and 148.8 ± 2.6%, respectively. TG-FTIR and XRD analyses indicated that chemical structure of the composite films could be well controlled by varying component proportion. From UV-Vis analysis, the optimum values of the percentage of blocking from UV-A and UV-B and ultraviolet protection factor values were 98.35%, 99.99% and 60.25, respectively. Additionally, the composite films exhibited good water vapor permeability, swelling behavior, antibacterial activity and biocompatibility. In terms of these properties, the shelf life of grapes could be extended to 6 days after packing with the composite film.

Effects of Dietary Essential Oils Supplementation on Egg Quality, Biochemical Parameters, and Gut Microbiota of Late-Laying Hens

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of adding essential oils (EO) to diets on egg quality, biochemical parameters and intestinal flora of late laying hens. The number of 252 Dawu Golden Phoenix laying hens (55 weeks old) were randomly sorted into two groups: the control group (CG) fed a basal diet and the EO group fed a basal diet with 300 mg/kg of essential oils. The average egg weight, feed-to-egg ratio, and egg production rate were determined every week. The trial started at week 55 and lasted for 8 weeks. During the experiment’s last week, 36 eggs out of each group were chosen at random to test. In our study, dietary supplementation with EO considerably decreased the egg breaking rate (p = 0.01) and increased the shell-breaking strength (p = 0.04). The treatment group’s alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were considerably lower than those of the control group (p = 0.03). The EO group had substantially higher total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) (p = 0.04 and p =0.03, respectively). However, there were no differences in alpha diversity indicators between the two groups. It is worth noting that Firmicutes were increased considerably (p < 0.05), while Spirochaetota and Proteobacteria were significantly reduced in the EO group. At genus levels, the EO supplementation increased the relative abundance of Intestinimonas (p < 0.05) and Megamonas (p < 0.01). In conclusion, a dietary supplementation of 300 mg/kg EO can improve the production performance of laying hens and the egg quality. It can also regulate the abundance of cecal flora and serum biochemical indicators.

Effects of fulvic acid addition on laying performance, biochemical indices, and gut microbiota of aged hens

The purpose of this study was to appraise the effect of fulvic acid on production, biochemical indices, and gut microbiota of laying hens. A total of 252 Dawu Golden Phoenix laying hens (55-week-old) were allotted to two treatments randomly, each with six replicates and 21 hens per replicate, including the control group (CG) and fulvic acid (500 mg/kg) group (FA). The trial period was 8 weeks. Adding FA raised egg weight (P = 0.03), shell-breaking strength (P = 0.03), and reduced egg breaking rate (P < 0.01), compared with CG. There was no difference in eggshell thickness and egg shape index between the two treatments; however, the FA group increased egg production by 1.45% and reduced the feed-to-egg ratio by 0.09. Moreover, dietary FA decreased the aspartate aminotransferase levels in serum (P = 0.04), and glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity were increased (P = 0.02 and 0.04, respectively). Despite this, the two groups had no differences in the alpha diversity indices (PD_whole trees, Shannon, Ace, Simpson, Chao1, and goods_coverage). Obviously, at the phylum level, the abundances of Firmicutes were improved (P < 0.01), Actinobacteriota (P < 0.01), and Proteobacteria (P < 0.01) were reduced by dietary FA. Supplementation with FA could improve the abundances of Megamonas (P < 0.01) and reduce Enterobacter (P < 0.01) at the genus level. To sum up, this study showed the addition of 500 mg/kg FA may boost production and egg quality and modulate the cecal microflora abundance and serum biochemical indices of laying hens.

Effect of various drying methods on the physicochemical characterizations, antioxidant activities and hypoglycemic activities of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) pulp polysaccharides

Suitable drying method is critical for the preservation of physicochemical and pharmacological quality of lychee pulp polysaccharides (LPPs). In current work, the effects of five drying methods, i.e. air drying (A), infrared drying (I), heat pump drying (H), vacuum freeze drying (F) and freeze vacuum drying combined with heat pump drying (FH) on the physicochemical characterizations, antioxidant activities and hypoglycemic activities of LPPs were explored. Results showed all five drying methods led to thermal aggregation of LPPs and the stronger the thermal effect induced by drying, the more serious the aggregations were. Additionally, the thermal aggregation significantly affected the composition, structure and biological activity of LPPs. Less thermal aggregation was observed in LPPF and LPPFH, which exhibited stronger oxygen, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, higher ferric-reducing power and better α-glycosidase and α-amylase inhibition activities, resulting from their higher contents of neutral sugar, protein and uronic acid and lower molecular weight than LPPA and LPPI. Besides, FH consumed about half drying time and one fifth energy of F. Therefore, from industrial perspective, FH is a promising alternative to F for producing LPPs by comprehensively considering physicochemical characterizations, bioactivity as well as energy consumption.

Characteristics of Radiation-Related Intracranial Aneurysms: A Multicenter Retrospective Study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Intracranial aneurysms, a rare complication of radiation therapy, have been reported mainly in case reports or case series. We performed a multicenter, retrospective cohort study to investigate the characteristics of radiation-induced intracranial aneurysms.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Data on 2641 patients with intracranial aneurysms were retrospectively collected from 3 hospitals between January 2005 and June 2014. An additional 1519 patients were recruited from a single center between July 2014 and March 2020. Aneurysms in patients with a history of radiation therapy for at least 6 months were defined as radiation-related aneurysms. Patients' demographic profiles, clinical characteristics, and aneurysm parameters detected on CTA were compared between radiation-related and control groups.

RESULTS

Of the 4160 patients, the average age was 57.9 (SD, 13.5) years, 2406 (57.8%) were women, 477 (11.5%) had multiple aneurysms, 3009 (72.3%) had SAH, and 34 (0.8%) had radiation-related aneurysms. The male-to-female ratio in the radiation-related group was significantly higher than that in the control group (2.4:1 versus 0.72:1, P = .001). The mean age of the radiation-related group was significantly younger than in the control group (51.4 [SD, 15.0] years versus 58.2 [SD, 13.5] years, P = .003). More patients in the radiation-related group presented with SAH than in the control group (without age and sex matching, 88.2% versus 72.2%, P = .037; with age and sex matching, 88.2% versus 58.8%, P = .006). Of the 4813 intracranial aneurysms, only 43 (0.9%) aneurysms were categorized as in the radiation-related group, whereas 4770 (99.1%) aneurysms constituted the control group. Compared with the control group, there was a significantly higher proportion of sidewall aneurysms (46.5% versus 32.3%, P = .048) and a predilection for aneurysms involving the ICA and posterior circulation arteries (72.1% versus 52.2%, P = .046) in the radiation-related group.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with the control group, radiation-related aneurysms are more prone to occur in men and young patients, with a higher percentage of sidewall aneurysms located in the ICA and posterior circulation arteries. Furthermore, SAH is highly prevalent in patients with radiation-induced aneurysms, indicating that dedicated screening for aneurysms after radiation therapy is necessary, but further studies are needed to determine when and how to screen.

Debate: Could the litchi pericarp oligomeric procyanidins bioconverted by Lactobacillus plantarum increase the inhibitory capacity on advanced glycation end products?

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have already been used as fermentation strains to enhance the antioxidant capacity of polyphenols. Antioxidant capacity is one of the most important factors to inhibit advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation and could LAB increase the inhibitory capacity of procyanidins on AGEs formation? It was surprising that opposite results were obtained both in simulated food processing and gastrointestinal digestion systems. After incubation with Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum), litchi pericarp oligomeric procyanidins (LPOPCs) were bioconverted to several phenolic acids, which increased the antioxidant activity as expected. However, antiglycation ability and trapping carbonyl compounds capacity both weakened and it might be the primary reason for decreasing the inhibitory effect on AGE formation. Furthermore, it was found that LPOPCs incubated with L. plantarum inhibited the activity of digestive enzymes and thus decreased the digestibility of glycated protein. Our study systematically proposed for the first time that procyanidins bioconversion is an effective means to improve the antioxidant activity but has no remarkable promoting effect on AGEs inhibition.
