Ion Solvation and Transport in Narrow Carbon Nanotubes: Effects of Polarizability, Cation-π Interaction, and Confinement

Water Electric Field Induced Modulation of the Wetting of Hexagonal Boron Nitride: Insights from Multiscale Modeling of Many-Body Polarization

Understanding the behavior of water contacting two-dimensional materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), is important in practical applications, including seawater desalination and energy harvesting. Water, being a polar solvent, can strongly polarize the hBN surface via the electric fields that it generates. However, there is a lack of molecular-level understanding about the role of polarization effects at the hBN/water interface, including its effect on the wetting properties of water. In this study, we develop a theoretical framework that introduces an all-atomistic polarizable force field to accurately model the interactions of water molecules with hBN surfaces. The force field is then utilized to self-consistently describe the water-induced polarization of hBN using the classical Drude oscillator model, including predicting the hBN-water binding energies which are found to be in excellent agreement with diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) predictions. By carrying out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we demonstrate that the polarizable force field yields a water contact angle on multilayered hBN which is in close agreement with the recent experimentally reported values. Conversely, an implicit modeling of the hBN-water polarization energy utilizing a Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential, a commonly utilized approximation in previous MD simulation studies, leads to a considerably lower water contact angle. This difference in the predicted contact angles is attributed to the significant energy-entropy compensation resulting from the incorporation of polarization effects at the hBN-water interface. Our work highlights the importance of self-consistently modeling the hBN-water polarization energy and offers insights into the wetting-related interfacial phenomena of water on polarizable materials.

Structural and dynamical properties of concentrated alkali- and alkaline-earth metal chloride aqueous solutions

Concentrated ionic aqueous electrolytes possess a diverse array of applications across various fields, particularly in the field of energy storage. Despite extensive examination, the intricate relationships and numerous physical mechanisms underpinning diverse phenomena remain incompletely understood. Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to probe the attributes of aqueous solutions containing LiCl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2, spanning various solute fractions. The primary emphasis of the simulations is on unraveling the intricate interplay between these attributes and the underlying physical mechanisms. The configurations of cation-Cl- and Cl--Cl- pairs within these solutions are disclosed. As the solute fraction increases, consistent trends manifest regardless of solute type: (i) the number of hydrogen bonds formed by the hydration water surrounding ions decreases, primarily attributed to the growing presence of counter ions in proximity to the hydration water; (ii) the hydration number of ions exhibits varying trends influenced by multiple factor; and (iii) the diffusion of ions slows down, attributed to the enhanced confinement and rebound of cations and Cl- ions from the surrounding atoms, concurrently coupled with the changes in ion vibration modes. In our analysis, we have, for the first time, clarified the reasons behind the slowing down of the diffusion of the ions with increasing solute fraction. Our research contributes to a better understanding and manipulation of the attributes of ionic aqueous solutions and may help designing high-performance electrolytes.

Structure and Dynamics of Confined Water Inside Diphenylalanine Peptide Nanotubes

Diphenylalanine (FF) peptides exhibit a unique ability to self-assemble into nanotubes with confined water molecules playing pivotal roles in their structure and function. This study investigates the structure and dynamics of diphenylalanine peptide nanotubes (FFPNTs) using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) and grand canonical Monte Carlo combined with MD (GCMC/MD) simulations with both the CHARMM additive and Drude polarizable force fields. The occupancy and dynamics of confined water molecules were also examined. It was found that less than 2 confined water molecules per FF help stabilize the FFPNTs on the x-y plane. Analyses of the kinetics of confined water molecules revealed distinctive transport behaviors for bound and free water, and their respective diffusion coefficients were compared. Our results validate the importance of polarizable force field models in studying peptide nanotubes and provide insights into our understanding of nanoconfined water.

CONAN─Novel Tool to Create and Analyze Liquids in Confined Space

Modeling of complex liquids at solid surfaces and in confinement is gaining attention due to an increase in computer power and advancement of simulation techniques. Therefore, tools to set up structures and for analysis are needed. In this paper, we present CONAN─a Python code designed to facilitate the study of liquids interacting with solid structures, such as walls or pores. Among other things, the program provides the option to generate a variety of different structures, including carbon walls and nanotubes and their boron nitride analogs, as well as the ability to analyze various structural properties of confined and interfacial liquids. In the case of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate in carbon nanotubes of different sizes, we demonstrate the abilities of our tool. The average density within the confinement highly depends on the carbon nanotube size, and it is generally lower than the density of the bulk liquid. The arrangement of the individual species within the tube also depends on size, with radial layers forming within the tubular confinement. The density is largely increased in the respective layers, while it is drastically reduced between the layers.

Scalable Synthesis of Carbon Nanomembranes from Amorphous Molecular Layers

Nanoporous carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) created by self-assembled monolayers ideally combine a high water flux and precise ion selectivity for molecular separation and water desalination. However, their practical implementation is often challenged by the availability of large epitaxial substrates, limiting the membrane up-scaling. Here, we report a scalable synthesis of CNMs from poly(4-vinylbiphenyl) (PVBP) spin-coated on SiO2/Si wafers. Electron irradiation of the amorphous PVBP molecular layers induces the formation of a continuous membrane with a thickness of 15 nm and a high density of subnanometer pores, providing a water permeance as high as 530 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, while repelling ions and molecules larger than 1 nm in size. A further introduction of a reinforced porous block copolymer layer enables the fabrication of centimeter-scale CNM composites that efficiently separate organic dyes from water. These results suggest a feasible route for large-scale nanomembrane fabrication.

Surface-charge governed ionic blockade in angstrom-scale latent-track channels

When channels are scaled down to the size of hydrated ions, Coulomb interactions are enhanced in confinement, resulting in new phenomena. Herein, we found blockade of ionic transport in latent-track angstrom-scale channels governed by surface charge, fundamentally different from Coulomb blockade or Wien effects. The channels are non-conductive at low voltage, blocked by cations bound at the surface in confinement; however, they change to conductive with increasing voltage due to the release of bound ions. The increase in surface charge density gradually causes the conduction to be ohmic. Using Kramers' escape framework, we rationalized an analytical equation to describe the experimental results, uncovering new fundamental insights into ion transport in the smallest channels.

Mechanistic Insights on Permeation of Water over Iron Cations in Nanoporous Silicon Oxide Films for Selective H2 and O2 Evolution

Electrocatalysts encapsulated by an ultrathin and semipermeable oxide layer offer a promising avenue for efficient, selective, and cost-effective production of hydrogen through photoelectrochemical water splitting. This architecture is especially attractive for Z-scheme water splitting, for which a nanoporous oxide film can be leveraged to mitigate undesired, yet kinetically facile, reactions involving redox shuttles, such as aqueous iron cations, by limiting transport of these species to catalytically active sites. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were combined with electrochemical measurements to provide a mechanistic understanding of permeation of water and Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox shuttles through nanoporous SiO₂ films. It is shown that even for SiO₂ pores with a width as small as 0.8 nm, water does not experience any energy barrier for permeating into the pores due to a favorable interaction with hydrophilic silanol groups on the oxide surface. In contrast, permeation of Fe(III) and Fe(II) into microporous SiO₂ pores is limited due to high energy barriers, which stem from a combination of distortion and dehydration of the second and third ion solvation shells. Our simulations and experimental results show that SiO₂ coatings can effectively mitigate undesired Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox reactions at underlying electrodes by attenuating permeation of iron cations, while allowing water to permeate and thus participate in water splitting reactions. In a broader context, our study demonstrates that selectivity of solvated cations can be manipulated by controlling the pore size and surface chemistry of oxide films.

Fluids and Electrolytes under Confinement in Single-Digit Nanopores

Confined fluids and electrolyte solutions in nanopores exhibit rich and surprising physics and chemistry that impact the mass transport and energy efficiency in many important natural systems and industrial applications. Existing theories often fail to predict the exotic effects observed in the narrowest of such pores, called single-digit nanopores (SDNs), which have diameters or conduit widths of less than 10 nm, and have only recently become accessible for experimental measurements. What SDNs reveal has been surprising, including a rapidly increasing number of examples such as extraordinarily fast water transport, distorted fluid-phase boundaries, strong ion-correlation and quantum effects, and dielectric anomalies that are not observed in larger pores. Exploiting these effects presents myriad opportunities in both basic and applied research that stand to impact a host of new technologies at the water-energy nexus, from new membranes for precise separations and water purification to new gas permeable materials for water electrolyzers and energy-storage devices. SDNs also present unique opportunities to achieve ultrasensitive and selective chemical sensing at the single-ion and single-molecule limit. In this review article, we summarize the progress on nanofluidics of SDNs, with a focus on the confinement effects that arise in these extremely narrow nanopores. The recent development of precision model systems, transformative experimental tools, and multiscale theories that have played enabling roles in advancing this frontier are reviewed. We also identify new knowledge gaps in our understanding of nanofluidic transport and provide an outlook for the future challenges and opportunities at this rapidly advancing frontier.

Putting together the puzzle of ion transfer in single-digit carbon nanotubes: mean-field meets ab initio

Nature employs channel proteins to selectively pass water across cell membranes, which inspires the search for bio-mimetic analogues. Carbon nanotube porins (CNTPs) are intriguing mimics of water channels, yet ion transport in CNTPs still poses questions. As an alternative to continuum models, here we present a molecular mean-field model that transparently describes ion coupling, yet unlike continuum models, computes ab initio all required thermodynamic quantities for the KCl salt and H⁺ and OH^- ions present in water. Starting from water transfer, the model considers the transfer of free ions, along with ion-pair formation as a proxy of non-mean-field ion-ion interactions. High affinity to hydroxide, suggested by experiments, making it a dominant charge carrier in CNTPs, is revealed as an exceptionally favorable transfer of KOH pairs. Nevertheless, free ions, coexisting with less mobile ion-pairs, apparently control ion transport. The model well explains the observed effects of salt concentration and pH on conductivity, transport numbers, anion permeation and its activation energies, and current rectification. The proposed approach is extendable to other sub-nanochannels and helps design novel osmotic materials and devices.

ROS-triggered nanoinducer based on dermatan sulfate enhances immunogenic cell death in melanoma

Due to its complexity, diversity and heterogeneity, melanoma is a kind of malignant tumor. It has been proved that the enhancement of anti-tumor immune response such as immunogenic cell death (ICD) is an important therapeutic strategy. In previous studies, we confirmed that dermatan sulfate (DS) from skin tissue could specifically homing to melanoma B16F10 cells. In this study, we propose a nanoinducer (DOX/ADS NP) based on a functional DS for melanoma. This nanosystem is composed of DS as framework, aromatic thioketal derivative (ATK) as functional grafting unit and doxorubicin (DOX) designed as an ICD inducer. Through the intermolecular interaction between DOX and ATK, DOX/ADS NP with specific-homing, high-loading and ROS-triggering release was obtained via self-assemble. Compared with free DOX and non-functionalized nanomedicine, DOX/ADS NP could release DOX into B16F10 cells better, and strongly induce the translocation of calreticulin (CRT) to the cell membrane. CRT is a marker of ICD, also as a "eat me" signal to stimulate the maturation and antigen presentation of dendritic cells. Therefore, a series of subsequent immune responses were activated: maturation of dendritic cells, T cells proliferation, increased tumor-infiltrating CTLs and the ratio of CTLs to Tregs, and up-regulated cytotoxic cytokine expression. In conclusion, DOX/ADS NP promoted ICD-associated immune response through more specific targeting effect and sensitive responsive DOX release, achieving better inhibitory effect on melanoma than free DOX and other nanoformulation. This biomimetic ICD nanoinducer based on DS is expected to provide new strategies and references for the treatment of melanoma.

Unprecedently large 37Cl/35Cl equilibrium isotopic fractionation on nano-confinement of chloride anion

Confinement can result in unusual properties leading to new, exciting discoveries in the nano-realm. One such consequence of confinement at the nanoscale is extremally large isotopic fractionation, especially at sub-van der Waals distances. Herein, on the example of chlorine isotope effects, we show that at conditions of nanoencapsulation these effects may reach values by far larger than observed for the bulk environment, which in the case of nanotubes can lead to practical applications (e.g., in isotopic enrichment) and needs to be considered in analytical procedures that employ nanomaterials.

Hydrodynamic slip of alkali chloride solutions in uncharged graphene nanochannels

Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate the effect of concentration and alkali cation types (K⁺, Na⁺, and Li⁺) on the hydrodynamic slip of aqueous alkali chloride solutions in an uncharged graphene nanochannel. We modeled the graphene-electrolyte interactions using the potential of Williams et al. [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 8, 703 (2017)], which uses optimized graphene-ion Lennard-Jones interaction parameters to effectively account for surface and solvent polarizability effects on the adsorption of ions in an aqueous solution to a graphene surface. In our study, the hydrodynamic slip exhibits a decreasing trend for alkali chloride solutions with increasing salt concentration. The NaCl solution shows the highest reduction in the slip length followed by KCl and LiCl solutions, and the reduction in the slip length is very much dependent on the salt type. We also compared the slip length with that calculated using a standard unoptimized interatomic potential obtained from the Lorentz-Berthelot mixing rule for the ion-carbon interactions, which is not adjusted to account for the surface and solvent polarizability at the graphene surface. In contrast to the optimized model, the slip length of alkali chloride solutions in the unoptimized model shows only a nominal change with salt concentration and is also independent of the nature of salts. Our study shows that adoption of the computationally inexpensive optimized potential of Williams et al. for the graphene-ion interactions has a significant influence on the calculation of slip lengths for electrolyte solutions in graphene-based nanofluidic devices.

Photosensitizer-driven nanoassemblies of homodimeric prodrug for self-enhancing activation and synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy

Carrier-free prodrug-nanoassemblies have emerged as promising nanomedicines. In particular, the self-assembled nanoparticles (NPs) composed of homodimeric prodrugs with ultrahigh drug loading have attracted broad attention. However, most homodimeric prodrugs show poor self-assembly ability due to their symmetric structures. Herein, we developed photosensitizer-driven nanoassemblies of homodimeric prodrug for self-enhancing activation and chemo-photodynamic synergistic therapy.

Methods: In this work, a pyropheophorbide a (PPa)-driven nanoassemblies of an oxidation-responsive cabazitaxel homodimer (CTX-S-CTX) was fabricated (pCTX-S-CTX/PPa NPs). The assembly mechanisms, aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect alleviation, singlet oxygen generation, self-enhancing prodrug activation, cellular uptake, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and synergistic cytotoxicity of pCTX-S-CTX/PPa NPs were investigated in vitro. Moreover, the pharmacokinetics, ex vivo biodistribution and in vivo therapeutic efficacy of pCTX-S-CTX/PPa NPs were studied in mice bearing 4T1 tumor.

Results: Interestingly, PPa was found to drive the assembly of CTX-S-CTX, which cannot self-assemble into stable NPs alone. Multiple intermolecular forces were found to be involved in the assembly process. Notably, the nanostructure was destroyed in the presence of endogenous ROS, significantly relieving the ACQ effect of PPa. In turn, ROS generated by PPa under laser irradiation together with the endogenous ROS synergistically promoted prodrug activation. As expected, the nanoassemblies demonstrated potent antitumor activity in a 4T1 breast cancer BALB/c mice xenograft model.

Conclusion: Our findings offer a simple strategy to facilitate the assembly of homodimeric prodrugs and provide an efficient nanoplatform for chemo-photodynamic therapy.
