Spin-Pure Stochastic-CASSCF via GUGA-FCIQMC Applied to Iron-Sulfur Clusters

Restricted Open-Shell Hartree-Fock Method for a General Configuration State Function Featuring Arbitrarily Complex Spin-Couplings

In this work, we present a general spin restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock (ROHF) implementation that is able to generate self-consistent field (SCF) wave functions for an arbitrary configuration state function (CSF). These CSFs can contain an arbitrary number of unpaired electrons in arbitrary spin-couplings. The resulting method is named CSF-ROHF. We demonstrate that starting from the ROHF energy expression, for example, the one given by Edwards and Zerner, it is possible to obtain the values of the ROHF vector-coupling coefficients by setting up an open-shell for each group of consecutive parallel-coupled spins dictated by the unique spin-coupling pattern of any given CSF. To achieve this important and nontrivial goal, we employ the machinery of the iterative configuration expansion configuration interaction (ICE-CI) method, which is able to tackle general CI problems on the basis of spin-adapted CSFs. This development allows for the efficient generation of SCF spin-eigenfunctions for systems with complex spin-coupling patterns, such as polymetallic chains and metal clusters, while maintaining SCF scaling with system size (quadratic or less, depending on the specific algorithm and approximations chosen).

Perspective: multi-configurational methods in bio-inorganic chemistry

Transition metal ions play crucial roles in the structure and function of numerous proteins, contributing to essential biological processes such as catalysis, electron transfer, and oxygen binding. However, accurately modeling the electronic structure and properties of metalloproteins poses significant challenges due to the complex nature of their electronic configurations and strong correlation effects. Multiconfigurational quantum chemistry methods are, in principle, the most appropriate tools for addressing these challenges, offering the capability to capture the inherent multi-reference character and strong electron correlation present in bio-inorganic systems. Yet their computational cost has long hindered wider adoption, making methods such as density functional theory (DFT) the method of choice. However, advancements over the past decade have substantially alleviated this limitation, rendering multiconfigurational quantum chemistry methods more accessible and applicable to a wider range of bio-inorganic systems. In this perspective, we discuss some of these developments and how they have already been used to answer some of the most important questions in bio-inorganic chemistry. We also comment on ongoing developments in the field and how the future of the field may evolve.

MBE-CASSCF Approach for the Accurate Treatment of Large Active Spaces

We present a novel implementation of the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method that makes use of the many-body expanded full configuration interaction (MBE-FCI) method to incrementally approximate electronic structures within large active spaces. On the basis of a hybrid first-order algorithm employing both Super-CI and quasi-Newton strategies for the optimization of molecular orbitals, we demonstrate both computational efficacy and high accuracy of the resulting MBE-CASSCF method. We assess the performance of our implementation on a set of established numerical tests before applying MBE-CASSCF in the investigation of the triplet-quintet spin gap of iron(II) porphyrin with active spaces as large as 50 electrons in 50 orbitals.

Toward Real Chemical Accuracy on Current Quantum Hardware Through the Transcorrelated Method

Quantum computing is emerging as a new computational paradigm with the potential to transform several research fields including quantum chemistry. However, current hardware limitations (including limited coherence times, gate infidelities, and connectivity) hamper the implementation of most quantum algorithms and call for more noise-resilient solutions. We propose an explicitly correlated Ansatz based on the transcorrelated (TC) approach to target these major roadblocks directly. This method transfers, without any approximation, correlations from the wave function directly into the Hamiltonian, thus reducing the resources needed to achieve accurate results with noisy quantum devices. We show that the TC approach allows for shallower circuits and improves the convergence toward the complete basis set limit, providing energies within chemical accuracy to experiment with smaller basis sets and, thus, fewer qubits. We demonstrate our method by computing bond lengths, dissociation energies, and vibrational frequencies close to experimental results for the hydrogen dimer and lithium hydride using two and four qubits, respectively. To demonstrate our approach's current and near-term potential, we perform hardware experiments, where our results confirm that the TC method paves the way toward accurate quantum chemistry calculations already on today's quantum hardware.

Self-Consistent Field Approach for the Variational Quantum Eigensolver: Orbital Optimization Goes Adaptive

We present a self-consistent field (SCF) approach within the adaptive derivative-assembled problem-tailored ansatz variational quantum eigensolver (ADAPT-VQE) framework for efficient quantum simulations of chemical systems on near-term quantum computers. To this end, our ADAPT-VQE-SCF approach combines the idea of generating an ansatz with a small number of parameters, resulting in shallow-depth quantum circuits with a direct minimization of an energy expression that is correct to second order with respect to changes in the molecular orbital basis. Our numerical analysis, including calculations for the transition-metal complex ferrocene [Fe (C5H5)2], indicates that convergence in the self-consistent orbital optimization loop can be reached without a considerable increase in the number of two-qubit gates in the quantum circuit by comparison to a VQE optimization in the initial molecular orbital basis. Moreover, the orbital optimization can be carried out simultaneously within each iteration of the ADAPT-VQE cycle. ADAPT-VQE-SCF thus allows us to implement a routine analogous to the complete active space SCF, a cornerstone of state-of-the-art computational chemistry, in a hardware-efficient manner on near-term quantum computers. Hence, ADAPT-VQE-SCF paves the way toward a paradigm shift for quantitative quantum-chemistry simulations on quantum computers by requiring fewer qubits and opening up for the use of large and flexible atomic orbital basis sets in contrast to earlier methods that are predominantly based on the idea of full active spaces with minimal basis sets.

Distributed Implementation of Full Configuration Interaction for One Trillion Determinants

Full configuration interaction (FCI) can provide an exact molecular ground-state energy within a given basis set and serve as a benchmark for approximate methods in quantum chemical calculations, including the emerging variational quantum eigensolver. However, its exponential computational and memory requirements easily exceed the capability of a single server and limit its applicability to large molecules. In this paper, we present a distributed FCI implementation employing a hybrid parallelization scheme with multithreading and multiprocessing to expand FCI's applicability. We optimize this scheme to minimize the bottlenecks arising from interprocess communications and interthread data management. Our implementation achieves higher scalability than the naive combination of prior works and successfully calculates the exact energy of C3H8/STO-3G with 1.31 trillion determinants, which is the largest FCI calculation to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive list of FCI results with 136 combinations of molecules and basis sets for future evaluation and development of approximate methods.

Toward a Stochastic Complete Active Space Second-Order Perturbation Theory

In this work, an internally contracted stochastic complete active space second-order perturbation theory, stochastic-CASPT2, is reported. The method relies on stochastically sampled reduced density matrices (RDMs) up to rank four and contractions thereof with the generalized Fock matrix. A new protocol for calculating higher-order RDMs in full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) has been designed based on (1) restricting sampling of the corresponding excitations to a deterministic subspace, (2) averaging the RDMs from independent dynamics and (3) projecting them onto the closest positive semi-definite matrix. Our protocol avoids previously encountered numerical conditioning problems in the orthogonalization of the perturber overlap matrix stemming from numerical noise. The chromium dimer CASSCF(12,12)/CASPT2 binding curve is computed as a proof of concept.

Exploiting Locality in Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo for Fast Excitation Generation

In this paper, we propose an improved excitation generation algorithm for the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method, which is particularly effective in systems described by localized orbitals. The method is an extension of the precomputed heat-bath strategy of Holmes et al., with more effective sampling of double excitations and a novel approach for nonuniform sampling of single excitations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm for a chain of 30 hydrogen atoms with atom-localized orbitals, a stack of benzene molecules, and an Fe(II)-porphyrin model complex, whereby we show an overall efficiency gain by a factor of two to four, as measured by variance reduction per wall-clock time.

The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

Measuring Electron Correlation: The Impact of Symmetry and Orbital Transformations

In this perspective, the various measures of electron correlation used in wave function theory, density functional theory and quantum information theory are briefly reviewed. We then focus on a more traditional metric based on dominant weights in the full configuration solution and discuss its behavior with respect to the choice of the N-electron and the one-electron basis. The impact of symmetry is discussed, and we emphasize that the distinction among determinants, configuration state functions and configurations as reference functions is useful because the latter incorporate spin-coupling into the reference and should thus reduce the complexity of the wave function expansion. The corresponding notions of single determinant, single spin-coupling and single configuration wave functions are discussed and the effect of orbital rotations on the multireference character is reviewed by analyzing a simple model system. In molecular systems, the extent of correlation effects should be limited by finite system size and in most cases the appropriate choices of one-electron and N-electron bases should be able to incorporate these into a low-complexity reference function, often a single configurational one.

Excited States, Symmetry Breaking, and Unphysical Solutions in State-Specific CASSCF Theory

State-specific electronic structure theory provides a route toward balanced excited-state wave functions by exploiting higher-energy stationary points of the electronic energy. Multiconfigurational wave function approximations can describe both closed- and open-shell excited states and avoid the issues associated with state-averaged approaches. We investigate the existence of higher-energy solutions in complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) theory and characterize their topological properties. We demonstrate that state-specific approximations can provide accurate higher-energy excited states in H₂ (6-31G) with more compact active spaces than would be required in a state-averaged formalism. We then elucidate the unphysical stationary points, demonstrating that they arise from redundant orbitals when the active space is too large or symmetry breaking when the active space is too small. Furthermore, we investigate the singlet-triplet crossing in CH₂ (6-31G) and the avoided crossing in LiF (6-31G), revealing the severity of root flipping and demonstrating that state-specific solutions can behave quasi-diabatically or adiabatically. These results elucidate the complexity of the CASSCF energy landscape, highlighting the advantages and challenges of practical state-specific calculations.

Magnetic Interactions in a [Co(II)3Er(III)(OR)4] Model Cubane through Forefront Multiconfigurational Methods

Strong electron correlation effects are one of the major challenges in modern quantum chemistry. Polynuclear transition metal clusters are peculiar examples of systems featuring such forms of electron correlation. Multireference strategies, often based on but not limited to the concept of complete active space, are adopted to accurately account for strong electron correlation and to resolve their complex electronic structures. However, transition metal clusters already containing four magnetic centers with multiple unpaired electrons make conventional active space based strategies prohibitively expensive, due to their unfavorable scaling with the size of the active space. In this work, forefront techniques, such as density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC), and multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MCPDFT), are employed to overcome the computational limitation of conventional multireference approaches and to accurately investigate the magnetic interactions taking place in a [Co(II)₃Er(III)(OR)₄] (chemical formula [Co(II)₃Er(III)(hmp)₄(μ₂-OAc)₂(OH)₃(H₂O)], hmp = 2-(hydroxymethyl)-pyridine) model cubane water oxidation catalyst. Complete active spaces with up to 56 electrons in 56 orbitals have been constructed for the seven energetically lowest different spin states. Relative energies, local spin, and spin-spin correlation values are reported and provide crucial insights on the spin interactions for this model system, pivotal in the rationalization of the catalytic activity of this system in the water-splitting reaction. A ferromagnetic ground state is found with a very small, ∼50 cm^-1, highest-to-lowest spin gap. Moreover, for the energetically lowest states, S = 3-6, the three Co(II) sites exhibit parallel aligned spins, and for the lower states, S = 0-2, two Co(II) sites retain strong parallel spin alignment.

Nonlinear Molecular Electronic Spectroscopy via MCTDH Quantum Dynamics: From Exact to Approximate Expressions

We present an accurate and efficient approach to computing the linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy of a closed quantum system subject to impulsive interactions with an incident electromagnetic field. It incorporates the effect of ultrafast nonadiabatic dynamics by means of explicit numerical propagation of the nuclear wave packet. The fundamental expressions for the evaluation of first- and higher-order response functions are recast in a general form that can be used with any quantum dynamics code capable of computing the overlap of nuclear wave packets evolving in different states. Here we present the evaluation of these expressions with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. Application is made to pyrene, excited to its lowest bright excited state S₂ which exhibits a sub-100-fs nonadiabatic decay to a dark state S₁. The system is described by a linear vibronic coupling Hamiltonian, parametrized with multiconfiguration electronic structure methods. We show that the ultrafast nonadiabatic dynamics can have a remarkable effect on the spectral line shapes that goes beyond simple lifetime broadening. Furthermore, a widely employed approximate expression based on the time scale separation of dephasing and population relaxation is recast in the same theoretical framework. Application to pyrene shows the range of validity of such approximations.

Resolution of Electronic States in Heisenberg Cluster Models within the Unitary Group Approach

In this work ground and excited electronic states of Heisenberg cluster models, in the form of configuration interaction many-body wave functions, are characterized within the spin-adapted Graphical Unitary Group Approach framework, and relying on a novel combined unitary and symmetric group approach. Finite-size cluster models of well-defined point-group symmetry and of general local-spin Slocal>12 are presented, including J₁-J₂ triangular and tetrahedral clusters, which are often used to describe magnetic interactions in biological and biomimetic polynuclear transition metal clusters with unique catalytic activity, such as nitrogen fixation and photosynthesis. We show that a unique block-diagonal structure of the underlying Hamiltonian matrix in the spin-adapted basis emerges when an optimal lattice site ordering is chosen that reflects the internal symmetries of the model investigated. The block-diagonal structure is bound to the commutation relations between cumulative spin operators and the Hamiltonian operator, that in turn depend on the geometry of the cluster investigated. The many-body basis transformation, in the form of the orbital/site reordering, exposes such commutation relations. These commutation relations represent a rigorous and formal demonstration of the block-diagonal structure in Hamiltonian matrices and the compression of the corresponding spin-adapted many-body wave functions. As a direct consequence of the block-diagonal structure of the Hamiltonian matrix, it is possible to selectively optimize electronic excited states without the overhead of calculating the lower-energy states by simply relying on the initial ansatz for the targeted wave function. Additionally, more compact many-body wave functions are obtained. In extreme cases, electronic states are precisely described by a single configuration state function, despite the curse of dimensionality of the corresponding Hilbert space. These findings are crucial in the electronic structure theory framework, for they offer a conceptual route toward wave functions of reduced multireference character, that can be optimized more easily by approximated eigensolvers and are of more facile physical interpretation. They open the way to study larger ab initio and model Hamiltonians of increasingly larger number of correlated electrons, while keeping the computational costs at their lowest. In particular, these elements will expand the potential of electronic structure methods in understanding magnetic interactions in exchange-coupled polynuclear transition metal clusters.

Performance of a one-parameter correlation factor for transcorrelation: Study on a series of second row atomic and molecular systems

In this work, we investigate the performance of a recently proposed transcorrelated (TC) approach based on a single-parameter correlation factor [E. Giner, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 084119 (2021)] for systems involving more than two electrons. The benefit of such an approach relies on its simplicity as efficient numerical-analytical schemes can be set up to compute the two- and three-body integrals occurring in the effective TC Hamiltonian. To obtain accurate ground state energies within a given basis set, the present TC scheme is coupled to the recently proposed TC-full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method [Cohen et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 061101 (2019)]. We report ground state total energies on the Li-Ne series, together with their first cations, computed with increasingly large basis sets and compare to more elaborate correlation factors involving electron-electron-nucleus coordinates. Numerical results on the Li-Ne ionization potentials show that the use of the single-parameter correlation factor brings on average only a slightly lower accuracy (1.2 mH) in a triple-zeta quality basis set with respect to a more sophisticated correlation factor. However, already using a quadruple-zeta quality basis set yields results within chemical accuracy to complete basis set limit results when using this novel single-parameter correlation factor. Calculations on the H₂O, CH₂, and FH molecules show that a similar precision can be obtained within a triple-zeta quality basis set for the atomization energies of molecular systems.

Spin Purification in Full-CI Quantum Monte Carlo via a First-Order Penalty Approach

In this article, we demonstrate that a first-order spin penalty scheme can be efficiently applied to the Slater determinant based Full-CI Quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) algorithm, as a practical route toward spin purification. Two crucial applications are presented to demonstrate the validity and robustness of this scheme: the ¹Δ_g ← ³Σ_g vertical excitation in O₂ and key spin gaps in a [Mn₃^(IV)O₄] cluster. In the absence of a robust spin adaptation/purification technique, both applications would be unattainable by Slater determinant based ground state methods, with any starting wave function collapsing into the higher-spin ground state during the optimization. This strategy can be coupled to other algorithms that use the Slater determinant based FCIQMC algorithm as configuration interaction eigensolver, including the Stochastic Generalized Active Space, the similarity-transformed FCIQMC, the tailored-CC, and second-order perturbation theory approaches. Moreover, in contrast to the GUGA-FCIQMC technique, this strategy features both spin projection and total spin adaptation, making it appealing when solving anisotropic Hamiltonians. It also provides spin-resolved reduced density matrices, important for the investigation of spin-dependent properties in polynuclear transition metal clusters, such as the hyperfine-coupling constants.

iCISCF: An Iterative Configuration Interaction-Based Multiconfigurational Self-Consistent Field Theory for Large Active Spaces

An iterative configuration interaction (iCI)-based multiconfigurational self-consistent field (SCF) theory, iCISCF, is proposed to handle systems that require large active spaces. The success of iCISCF stems from three ingredients: (1) efficient selection of individual configuration state functions spanning the active space while maintaining full spin symmetry; (2) the use of Jacobi rotation for optimization of the active orbitals in conjunction with a quasi-Newton algorithm for the core/active-virtual and core-active orbital rotations; (3) a second-order perturbative treatment of the residual space left over by the selection procedure (i.e., iCISCF(2)). Several examples that go beyond the capability of CASSCF are taken as showcases to reveal the efficacy of iCISCF and iCISCF(2), facilitated by iCAS for imposed automatic selection and localization of active orbitals.

Stochastic Generalized Active Space Self-Consistent Field: Theory and Application

An algorithm to perform stochastic generalized active space calculations, Stochastic-GAS, is presented, that uses the Slater determinant based FCIQMC algorithm as configuration interaction eigensolver. Stochastic-GAS allows the construction and stochastic optimization of preselected truncated configuration interaction wave functions, either to reduce the computational costs of large active space wave function optimizations, or to probe the role of specific electron correlation pathways. As for the conventional GAS procedure, the preselection of the truncated wave function is based on the selection of multiple active subspaces while imposing restrictions on the interspace excitations. Both local and cumulative minimum and maximum occupation number constraints are supported by Stochastic-GAS. The occupation number constraints are efficiently encoded in precomputed probability distributions, using the precomputed heat bath algorithm, which removes nearly all runtime overhead of GAS. This strategy effectively allows the FCIQMC dynamics to a priori exclude electronic configurations that are not allowed by GAS restrictions. Stochastic-GAS reduced density matrices are stochastically sampled, allowing orbital relaxations via Stochastic-GASSCF, and direct evaluation of properties that can be extracted from density matrices, such as the spin expectation value. Three test case applications have been chosen to demonstrate the flexibility of Stochastic-GAS: (a) the Stochastic-GASSCF [5·(6, 6)] optimization of a stack of five benzene molecules, that shows the applicability of Stochastic-GAS toward fragment-based chemical systems; (b) an uncontracted stochastic MRCISD calculation that correlates 96 electrons and 159 molecular orbitals, and uses a large (32, 34) active space reference wave function for an Fe(II)-porphyrin model system, showing how GAS can be applied to systematically recover dynamic electron correlation, and how in the specific case of the Fe(II)-porphyrin dynamic correlation further differentially stabilizes the ³E_g over the ⁵A_1g spin state; (c) the study of an Fe₄S₄ cluster's spin-ladder energetics via highly truncated stochastic-GAS [4·(5, 5)] wave functions, where we show how GAS can be applied to understand the competing spin-exchange and charge-transfer correlating mechanisms in stabilizing different spin-states.

The Static-Dynamic-Static Family of Methods for Strongly Correlated Electrons: Methodology and Benchmarking

A series of methods (SDSCI, SDSPT2, iCI, iCIPT2, iCISCF(2), iVI, and iCAS) is introduced to accurately describe strongly correlated systems of electrons. Born from the (restricted) static-dynamic-static (SDS) framework for designing many-electron wave functions, SDSCI is a minimal multireference (MR) configuration interaction (CI) approach that constructs and diagonalizes a [Formula: see text] matrix for [Formula: see text] states, regardless of the numbers of orbitals and electrons to be correlated. If the full molecular Hamiltonian H in the QHQ block (which describes couplings between functions of the first-order interaction space Q) of the SDSCI CI matrix is replaced with a zeroth-order Hamiltonian [Formula: see text] before the diagonalization is taken, we obtain SDSPT2, a CI-like second-order perturbation theory (PT2). Unlike most variants of MRPT2, SDSPT2 treats single and multiple states in the same way and is particularly advantageous in the presence of near degeneracy. On the other hand, if the SDSCI procedure is repeated until convergence, we will have iterative CI (iCI), which can converge quickly from the above to the exact solutions (full CI) even when starting with a poor guess. When further combined with the selection of important configurations followed by a PT2 treatment of dynamic correlation, iCI becomes iCIPT2, which is a near-exact theory for medium-sized systems. The microiterations of iCI for relaxing the coefficients of contracted many-electron functions can be generalized to an iterative vector interaction (iVI) approach for finding exterior or interior roots of a given matrix, in which the dimension of the search subspace is fixed by either the number of target roots or the user-specified energy window. Naturally, iCIPT2 can be employed as the active space solver of the complete active space (CAS) self-consistent field, leading to iCISCF(2), which can further be combined with iCAS for automated selection of active orbitals and assurance of the same CAS for all states and all geometries. The methods are calibrated by taking the Thiel set of benchmark systems as examples. Results for the corresponding cations, a new set of benchmark systems, are also reported.
