C-H···O Hydrogen Bonding. The Prototypical Methane-Formaldehyde System: A Critical Assessment

Pd(II)/N,N'-Disulfonyl Bisimidazoline-Catalyzed Enantioselective Synthesis of Cyclic Quaternary Centers and Mechanistic Investigations

A Pd(II)/N,N'-disulfonyl bisimidazoline-catalyzed asymmetric 1,4-conjugate addition reaction of low-cost arylboronic acids with readily available β-substituted cyclic enones is described, providing a straightforward way of constructing cyclic all-carbon quaternary stereocenters with high enantioselectivity, in which ≥96% ee was obtained in most cases. The reaction proceeded without the protection of inert gas, making the operation process simple. Theoretical calculations have been applied to understand the origins of enantioselectivity.

Quantifying the Intrinsic Strength of C-H⋯O Intermolecular Interactions

It has been recognized that the C-H⋯O structural motif can be present in destabilizing as well as highly stabilizing intermolecular environments. Thus, it should be of interest to describe the strength of the C-H⋯O hydrogen bond for constant structural factors so that this intrinsic strength can be quantified and compared to other types of interactions. This description is provided here for C_2h-symmetric dimers of acrylic acid by means of the calculations that employ the coupled-cluster theory with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] together with an extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. Dimers featuring the C-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogens bonds are carefully investigated in a wide range of intermolecular separations by the CCSD(T)/CBS approach, and also by the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) method, which is based on the density-functional theory (DFT) treatment of monomers. While the nature of these two types of hydrogen bonding is very similar according to the SAPT-DFT/CBS calculations and on the basis of a comparison of the intermolecular potential curves, the intrinsic strength of the C-H⋯O interaction is found to be about a quarter of its O-H⋯O counterpart that is less than one might anticipate.

Highly Enantioselective Iridium(I)-Catalyzed Hydrocarbonation of Alkenes: A Versatile Approach to Heterocyclic Systems Bearing Quaternary Stereocenters

We report a versatile, highly enantioselective intramolecular hydrocarbonation reaction that provides a direct access to heteropolycyclic systems bearing chiral quaternary carbon stereocenters. The method, which relies on an iridium(I)/bisphosphine chiral catalyst, is particularly efficient for the synthesis of five-, six- and seven-membered fused indole and pyrrole products, bearing one and two stereocenters, with enantiomeric excesses of up to >99 %. DFT computational studies allowed to obtain a detailed mechanistic profile and identify a cluster of weak non-covalent interactions as key factors to control the enantioselectivity.

Prototypical π-π dimers re-examined by means of high-level CCSDT(Q) composite ab initio methods

The benzene-ethene and parallel-displaced (PD) benzene-benzene dimers are the most fundamental systems involving π-π stacking interactions. Several high-level ab initio investigations calculated the binding energies of these dimers using the coupled-cluster with singles, doubles, and quasi-perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] method at the complete basis set [CBS] limit using various approaches such as reduced virtual orbital spaces and/or MP2-based basis set corrections. Here, we obtain CCSDT(Q) binding energies using a Weizmann-3-type approach. In particular, we extrapolate the self-consistent field (SCF), CCSD, and (T) components using large heavy-atom augmented Gaussian basis sets [namely, SCF/jul-cc-pV{5,6}Z, CCSD/jul-cc-pV{Q,5}Z, and (T)/jul-cc-pV{T,Q}Z]. We consider post-CCSD(T) contributions up to CCSDT(Q), inner-shell, scalar-relativistic, and Born-Oppenheimer corrections. Overall, our best relativistic, all-electron CCSDT(Q) binding energies are ∆E_e,all,rel = 1.234 (benzene-ethene) and 2.550 (benzene-benzene PD), ∆H₀ = 0.949 (benzene-ethene) and 2.310 (benzene-benzene PD), and ∆H₂₉₈ = 0.130 (benzene-ethene) and 1.461 (benzene-benzene PD) kcal mol^-1. Important conclusions are reached regarding the basis set convergence of the SCF, CCSD, (T), and post-CCSD(T) components. Explicitly correlated calculations are used as a sanity check on the conventional binding energies. Overall, post-CCSD(T) contributions are destabilizing by 0.028 (benzene-ethene) and 0.058 (benzene-benzene) kcal mol^-1, and thus, they cannot be neglected if sub-chemical accuracy is sought (i.e., errors below 0.1 kcal mol^-1). CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pwCVTZ core-valence corrections increase the binding energies by 0.018 (benzene-ethene) and 0.027 (benzene-benzene PD) kcal mol^-1. Scalar-relativistic and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections are negligibly small. We use our best CCSDT(Q) binding energies to evaluate the performance of MP2-based, CCSD-based, and lower-cost composite ab initio procedures for obtaining these challenging π-π stacking binding energies.

Complexes of Formaldehyde and α-Dicarbonyls with Hydroxylamine: FTIR Matrix Isolation and Theoretical Study

The interactions of formaldehyde (FA), glyoxal (Gly) and methylglyoxal (MGly) with hydroxylamine (HA) isolated in solid argon and nitrogen were studied using FTIR spectroscopy and ab initio methods. The spectra analysis indicates the formation of two types of hydrogen-bonded complexes between carbonyl and hydroxylamine in the studied matrices. The cyclic planar complexes are stabilized by O–H⋯O(C), and C–H⋯N interactions and the nonplanar complexes are stabilized by O–H⋯O(C) bond. Formaldehyde was found to form with hydroxylamine, the cyclic planar complex and methylglyoxal, the nonplanar one in both argon and nitrogen matrices. In turn, glyoxal forms with hydroxylamine the most stable nonplanar complex in solid argon, whereas in solid nitrogen, both types of the complex are formed.

When are two hydrogen bonds better than one? Accurate first-principles models explain the balance of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors found in proteins

Hydrogen bonds (HBs) play an essential role in the structure and catalytic action of enzymes, but a complete understanding of HBs in proteins challenges the resolution of modern structural (i.e., X-ray diffraction) techniques and mandates computationally demanding electronic structure methods from correlated wavefunction theory for predictive accuracy. Numerous amino acid sidechains contain functional groups (e.g., hydroxyls in Ser/Thr or Tyr and amides in Asn/Gln) that can act as either HB acceptors or donors (HBA/HBD) and even form simultaneous, ambifunctional HB interactions. To understand the relative energetic benefit of each interaction, we characterize the potential energy surfaces of representative model systems with accurate coupled cluster theory calculations. To reveal the relationship of these energetics to the balance of these interactions in proteins, we curate a set of 4000 HBs, of which >500 are ambifunctional HBs, in high-resolution protein structures. We show that our model systems accurately predict the favored HB structural properties. Differences are apparent in HBA/HBD preference for aromatic Tyr versus aliphatic Ser/Thr hydroxyls because Tyr forms significantly stronger O–H⋯O HBs than N–H⋯O HBs in contrast to comparable strengths of the two for Ser/Thr. Despite this residue-specific distinction, all models of residue pairs indicate an energetic benefit for simultaneous HBA and HBD interactions in an ambifunctional HB. Although the stabilization is less than the additive maximum due both to geometric constraints and many-body electronic effects, a wide range of ambifunctional HB geometries are more favorable than any single HB interaction.

Correlated wavefunction theory predicts and high-resolution crystal structure analysis confirms the important, stabilizing effect of simultaneous hydrogen bond donor and acceptor interactions in proteins.

The HOX⋯SO2 (X=F, Cl, Br, I) Binary Complexes: Implications for Atmospheric Chemistry

Sulfur dioxide and hypohalous acids (HOX, X=F, Cl, Br, I) are ubiquitous molecules in the atmosphere that are central to important processes like seasonal ozone depletion, acid rain, and cloud nucleation. We present the first theoretical examination of the HOX⋯SO₂ binary complexes and the associated trends due to halogen substitution. Reliable geometries were optimized at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z level of theory for HOF and HOCl complexes. The HOBr and HOI complexes were optimized at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(D+d)Z level of theory with the exception of the Br and I atoms which were modeled with an aug-cc-pwCVDZ-PP pseudopotential. 27 HOX⋯SO₂ complexes were characterized and the focal point method was employed to produce CCSDT(Q)/CBS interaction energies. Natural Bond Orbital analysis and Symmetry Adapted Perturbation Theory were used to classify the nature of each principle interaction. The interaction energies of all HOX⋯SO₂ complexes in this study ranged from 1.35 to 3.81 kcal mol^-1 . The single-interaction hydrogen bonded complexes spanned a range of 2.62 to 3.07 kcal mol^-1 , while the single-interaction halogen bonded complexes were far more sensitive to halogen substitution ranging from 1.35 to 3.06 kcal mol^-1 , indicating that the two types of interactions are extremely competitive for heavier halogens. Our results provide insight into the interactions between HOX and SO₂ which may guide further research of related systems.

Significance of hydrogen bonding and other noncovalent interactions in determining octahedral tilting in the CH3NH3PbI3 hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cell semiconductor

The CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (methylammonium lead triiodide) perovskite semiconductor system has been viewed as a blockbuster research material during the last five years. Because of its complicated architecture, several of its technological, physical and geometrical issues have been examined many times. Yet this has not assisted in overcoming a number of problems in the field nor in enabling the material to be marketed. For instance, these studies have not clarified the nature and type of hydrogen bonding and other noncovalent interactions involved; the origin of hysteresis; the actual role of the methylammonium cation; the nature of polarity associated with the tetragonal geometry; the unusual origin of various frontier orbital contributions to the conduction band minimum; the underlying phenomena of spin-orbit coupling that causes significant bandgap reduction; and the nature of direct-to-indirect bandgap transition features. Arising from many recent reports, it is now a common belief that the I···H–N interaction formed between the inorganic framework and the ammonium group of CH₃NH₃⁺ is the only hydrogen bonded interaction responsible for all temperature-dependent geometrical polymorphs of the system, including the most stable one that persists at low-temperatures, and the significance of all other noncovalent interactions has been overlooked. This study focussed only on the low temperature orthorhombic polymorph of CH₃NH₃PbI₃ and CD₃ND₃PbI₃, where D refers deuterium. Together with QTAIM, DORI and RDG based charge density analyses, the results of density functional theory calculations with PBE with and without van der Waals corrections demonstrate that the prevailing view of hydrogen bonding in CH₃NH₃PbI₃ is misleading as it does not alone determine the a⁻b⁺a⁻ tilting pattern of the PbI₆⁴⁻ octahedra. This study suggests that it is not only the I···H/D–N, but also the I···H/D–C hydrogen/deuterium bonding and other noncovalent interactions (viz. tetrel-, pnictogen- and lump-hole bonding interactions) that are ubiquitous in the orthorhombic CH₃NH₃PbI₃/CD₃ND₃PbI₃ perovskite geometry. Their interplay determines the overall geometry of the polymorph, and are therefore responsible in part for the emergence of the functional optical properties of this material. This study also suggests that these interactions should not be regarded as the sole determinants of octahedral tilting since lattice dynamics is known to play a critical role as well, a common feature in many inorganic perovskites both in the presence and the absence of the encaged cation, as in CsPbI₃/WO₃ perovskites, for example.

A comparison between hydrogen and halogen bonding: the hypohalous acid–water dimers, HOX⋯H2O (X = F, Cl, Br)

Hypohalous acids (HOX) are a class of molecules that play a key role in the atmospheric seasonal depletion of ozone and have the ability to form both hydrogen and halogen bonds.

Intramolecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bond cooperativity in D-glucopyranose and D-galactopyranose-A DFT/GIAO, QTAIM/IQA, and NCI approach

Density functional theory calculations are used to compute proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts, interatomic distances, atom-atom interaction energies, and atomic charges for partial structures and conformers of α-D-glucopyranose, β-D-glucopyranose, and α-D-galactopyranose built up by introducing OH groups into 2-methyltetrahydropyran stepwisely. For the counterclockwise conformers, the most marked effects on the NMR shift and the charge on the OH1 proton are produced by OH2, those of OH3 and OH4 being somewhat smaller. This argues for a diminishing cooperative effect. The effect of OH6 depends on the configuration of the hydroxymethyl group and the position, axial or equatorial, of OH4, which controls hydrogen bonding in the 1,3-diol motif. Variations in the interaction energies reveal that a "new" hydrogen bond is sometimes formed at the expense of a preexisting one, probably due to geometrical constraints. Whereas previous work showed that complexing a conformer with pyridine affects only the nearest neighbour, successive OH groups increase the interaction energy of the N⋯H1 hydrogen bond and reduce its length. Analogous results are obtained for the clockwise conformers. The interaction energies for C-H⋯OH hydrogen bonding between axial CH protons and OH groups in certain conformers are much smaller than for O-H⋯OH bonds but they are largely covalent, whereas those of the latter are predominantly coulombic. These interactions are modified by complexation with pyridine in the same way as O-H⋯OH interactions: the computed NMR shifts of the CH protons increase, the atom-atom distances are shorter, and interaction energies are enhanced.
