Abstract
Lignin is a polymer with a complex structure. It is widely present in lignocellulosic biomass, and it has a variety of functional group substituents and linkage forms. Especially during the oxidation reaction, the positioning effect of the different substituents of the benzene ring leads to differences in lignin reactivity. The position of the benzene ring branched chain with respect to methoxy is important. The study of the effect of benzene substituents on the oxidation reaction's activity is still an unfinished task. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) and the m062x/6-311+g (d) basis set were used. Differences in the processes of phenolic oxygen intermediates formed by phenolic lignin structures (with different substituents) with chlorine dioxide during the chlorine dioxide reaction were investigated. Six phenolic lignin model species with different structures were selected. Bond energies, electrostatic potentials, atomic charges, Fukui functions and double descriptors of lignin model substances and reaction energy barriers are compared. The effects of benzene ring branched chains and methoxy on the mechanism of chlorine dioxide oxidation of lignin were revealed systematically. The results showed that the substituents with shorter branched chains and strong electron-absorbing ability were more stable. Lignin is not easily susceptible to the effects of chlorine dioxide. The substituents with longer branched chains have a significant effect on the flow of electron clouds. The results demonstrate that chlorine dioxide can affect the electron arrangement around the molecule, which directly affects the electrophilic activity of the molecule. The electron-absorbing effect of methoxy leads to a low dissociation energy of the phenolic hydroxyl group. Electrophilic reagents are more likely to attack this reaction site. In addition, the stabilizing effect of methoxy on the molecular structure of lignin was also found.

Abstract
This paper reports the first example of C-H arylation of benzene under mild conditions, using H2 as an electron source {turnover numbers (TONs)=0.7-2.0 for 24 h}. The reaction depends on a Rh-based electron storage catalyst, and proceeds at room temperature and in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the H2 is inactive during the radical transfer step, greatly reducing unwanted side reactions.

Abstract
Herein we described an access to biaryl lactones from ortho-aryl benzoic acids via intramolecular O-H/C-H oxidative coupling with the commonly used cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) as the one-electron oxidant under a thermal condition. The radical interrupting experiment suggested a radical process, while the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) showed that the C-H cleavage likely was not involved in the rate-determining step. Competitive reactions, especially the strikingly different ρ values of Hammett equations, indicated that the reaction rate was more sensitive to the electronic properties on the aryl moiety rather than the carboxylic moiety, which corresponded to the first single electron transfer (SET) step. In addition, the quite negative ρ values (-4.7) of the aryl moiety unveiled the remarkable electrophilic nature of the second intramolecular radical addition process, which was also consistent with product yields and regioselectivity. Moreover, control experiments disclosed that the single electron in the third step was also transferred to CeIV instead of molecular oxygen. Besides, the possible role of co-solvents trifluoroethanol (TFE) and its influences on the CeIV species were discussed. This work elucidated the possible mechanism by proposing the step that had more effects on the total reaction rate and the species that was responsible for the last single electron transfer.

Abstract
Muscarinic M3 receptor antagonists and inverse agonists displaying high affinity and subtype selectivity over the antitarget M2 are valuable pharmacological tools and may enable improved treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or urinary incontinence. On the basis of known M3 antagonists comprising a piperidine or quinuclidine unit attached to a biphenyl carbamate, 5-fluoro substitution was responsible for M3 subtype selectivity over M2, while 3'-chloro substitution substantially increased affinity through a σ-hole interaction. Resultantly, two piperidinyl- and two quinuclidinium-substituted biphenyl carbamates OFH243 (13n), OFH244 (13m), OFH3911 (14n), and OFH3912 (14m) were discovered, which display two-digit picomolar affinities with Ki values from 0.069 to 0.084 nM, as well as high selectivity over the M2 subtype (46- to 68-fold). While weak inverse agonistic properties were determined for the biphenyl carbamates 13m and 13n, neutral antagonism was observed for 14m and 14n and tiotropium under identical assay conditions.

Abstract
Aryl radicals generated in the aqueous phase of biphasic mixtures have-regardless of a comparably low polarity- a strong preference to react with aromatic substrates in the aqueous phase and not to undergo phase-transfer into a lipophilic phase, independent from the presence of a surfactant. These results represent an important prerequisite toward future studies in biological systems, which typically consist of various compartments of either hydrophilic or lipophilic character.

Abstract
The rich legacy of arenediazonium salts in the synthesis of unsymmetrical biaryls, built around the seminal works of Pschorr, Gomberg and Bachmann more than a century ago, continues to make important contributions at various evolutionary stages of modern biaryl synthesis. Based on in-depth mechanistic analysis and design of novel pathways and reaction conditions, the scope of biaryl synthesis with arenediazonium salts has enormously expanded in recent years through applications of transition metal/photoredox-catalysed cross-coupling, thermal/photosensitized radical chain CH-arylation of (hetero)arenes and arylative radical annulation reactions with alkynes. These recent developments have provided facile synthetic access to a wide variety of unsymmetrical biaryls of pharmaceutical, agrochemical and optoelectronic importance with green scale-up options and created opportunities for late-stage modification of peptides, nucleosides, carbon nanotubes and electrodes, the details of which are captured in this review.

Abstract
The radical arylation of anilines and pyrroles can be achieved under transition-metal- and catalyst-free conditions by using aryldiazotates in strongly alkaline aqueous solutions. The aryldiazotates act as protected diazonium ions, which do not undergo azo coupling with electron-rich aromatic substrates, but can still serve as an aryl radical source at slightly elevated temperatures. Based on an improved preparation of aryldiazotates in aqueous solution, homolytic aromatic substitutions of anilines and pyrroles were conducted with good overall yields and high regioselectivity. Moreover, DFT calculations provided further mechanistic insights.
