Abstract
Increased interest in chiral functional dyes has stimulated activity in the field of boron-containing helicenes over the past few years. Despite the fact that the introduction of boron endows π-conjugated scaffolds with attractive electronic and optical properties, boron helicenes have long remained underdeveloped compared to other helicenes containing main group elements. The main reason was the lack of reliable synthetic protocols to access these scaffolds. The construction of boron helicenes proceeds against steric strain, and thus the methods developed for planar systems have sometimes proven ineffective in their synthesis. Recent advances in the general boron chemistry and the synthesis of strained derivatives have opened the way to a wide variety of boron-containing helicenes. Although the number of helically chiral derivatives is still limited, these compounds are currently at the forefront of emissive materials for circularly-polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Yet the design of good emitters is not a trivial task. In this perspective, we discuss a number of requirements that must be met to provide an excellent emissive material. These include chemical and configurational stability, emission quantum yields, luminescence dissymmetry factors, and color purity. Understanding of these parameters and some structure-property relationships should aid in the rational design of superior boron helicenes. We also present the main achievements in their synthesis and point out niches in this area, e.g. stereoselective synthesis, necessary to accelerate the development of this fascinating class of compounds and to realize their potential in OLED devices and in other fields.

Abstract
The effects of polymethylene bridges on the chiroptical properties of trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms were examined both experimentally and theoretically using newly designed planar chiral Pt analogues (1) having three-dimensional superstructures. A series of optically pure polymethylene-vaulted Pt complexes (R)- and (S)-1 were synthesized and characterized with regard to the chiroptical behaviour of the trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms. These complexes were found to exhibit structure-dependent chiroptical characteristics in solution, such that the absolute values of specific rotation, the circular dichroism dissymmetry factor (gabs) and the circularly polarized luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) all increased upon shortening the polymethylene bridges. Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations were used to analyse vaulted and non-vaulted complexes, which demonstrated that the present linker-dependent chiroptical properties resulted from constraint-induced changes in the square planar Pt coordination centres rather than from chiral distortion along the coordination platforms.

Abstract
A chiral shape-persistent macrocyclic compound (Si-[3]), designed by the C/Si substitution in the spiro-atom of spirobifluorene in the cyclic trimer (C-[3]), has been successfully synthesized in this study. The C/Si substitution made the spiro-conjugation and energy levels of HOMO and LUMO decrease. Due to the silicon substitution, the macrocyclic compound Si-[3] was able to be degraded by fluoride ions, but its reaction rate was slower than that of the unsubstituted spirosilabifluorene, showing the chemical stability of Si-[3]. Furthermore, the chiroptical properties of Si-[3] with D3-symmetric macrocyclic structure were investigated, and (P,P,P)-Si-[3] showed a high emission quantum yield (Φf=80 %) and moderate dissymmetry factor of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) (glum,exp=-1.2×10-3). According to the time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations using polarizable continuum model (PCM), the bright CPL from Si-[3] was explained by a planarization of one bisilafluorenyl moiety at the excited state, which is responsible for the almost fully-allowed radiative transition with a short emission lifetime of τf=1.89 ns.

Abstract
Unveiling the mechanism behind chirality propagation and dissymmetry amplification at the molecular level is of significance for the development of chiral systems with comprehensively outstanding chiroptical performances. Herein, we have presented a straightforward Cu-mediated Ullmann homocoupling approach to synthesize perylene diimide-entwined double π-helical nanoribbons encompassing dimer, trimer, and tetramer while producing homochiral or heterochiral linking of chiral centers. A significant dissymmetry amplification was achieved, with absorption dissymmetry factors (|gabs|) increasing from 0.009 to 0.017 and further to 0.019, and luminescence dissymmetry factors (|glum|) rising from 0.007 to 0.013 and eventually to 0.015 for homochiral double π-helical oligomers. The disparity of magnetic transition dipole moment (m) densities in homochiral and heterochiral tetramers by time-dependent density functional theory calculations confirmed that homochiral oligomerization can maximize the total m, which is favorable for achieving ever-increasing g factors. Notably, these double π-helices exhibited exceptional photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL) ranging from 83 to 95%. The circularly polarized luminescence brightness (BCPL) eventually reached a remarkable 575 M-1 cm-1 for the homochiral tetramer, which is among the highest values reported for chiral small molecules. This kind of linearly extended double π-helices offers a platform for a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism behind chirality propagation and dissymmetry amplification.

Abstract
Recently, the synthesis of the racemate of an overcrowded triply fused carbo[7]helicene of formula C66H36 with three carbo[7]helicenes fused within a central six-membered ring was described. This molecule was found to embed an extremely contorted central six-membered ring and two negative curvatures. We report herein the resolution of the corresponding enantiomers and their conformational, structural, photophysical, and chiroptical properties. The racemization of the triply fused carbo[7]helicene was determined to proceed at a rate of krac = 8.06 × 10-4 s-1 at 175 °C in ortho-dichlorobenzene, corresponding to a barrier to enantiomerization ΔGenant‡ = 140.4 kJ·mol-1, a value significantly lower than for pristine carbo[7]helicene. Interestingly, the crystalline structures of the racemic and enantiopure materials show some differences regarding the molecular geometry, with an increased negative curvature in the latter cases. This unusual curved delocalized π-conjugated system afforded notably green fluorescence at room temperature and far-red phosphorescence at low temperature. Finally, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence responses of the enantiopure compounds have been measured and showed very close absorption and emission dissymmetry factors, gabs and glum, respectively, of ca. 2.6 × 10-3, indicating a similar chiral rigid geometry for both ground and excited states.

Abstract
The incorporation of boron-nitrogen (BN) units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as an isoelectronic replacement of two carbon atoms can significantly improve their optical properties, while the geometries are mostly retained. We report the first non-π-extended penta- and hexahelicenes comprising two aromatic 1,2-azaborinine rings. Comparing them with their all-carbon analogs regarding structural, spectral and (chir)optical properties allowed us to quantify the impact of the heteroatoms. In particular, BN-hexahelicene BN[6] exhibited a crystal structure congruent with its analog CC[6], but displayed a fivefold higher fluorescence quantum yield (φfl = 0.17) and an outstanding luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum| = 1.33 × 10-2). Such an unusual magnification of both properties at the same time makes BN-helicenes suitable candidates as circularly polarized luminescence emitters for applications in materials science.

Abstract
Realizing high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials remains a big challenge, which necessitates understanding systematically how their molecular structure controls the CPL. Here we investigate representative organic chiral emitters with different transition density distributions and reveal the pivotal role of transition density in CPL. We rationalize that to obtain large g-factors, two conditions should be simultaneously satisfied: (i) the transition density for the S1 (or T1)-to-S0 emission must be delocalized over the entire chromophore; and (ii) the chromophore inter-segment twisting must be restricted and tuned to an optimal value (∼50°). Our findings offer molecular-level insights into the CPL of organic emitters, with potential applications in the design of chiroptical materials and systems with strong CPL effects.

Abstract
Helicenes are an interesting scaffold for chiroptical properties and in particular circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In this short review, we collect the luminescence (glum ) and absorption (gabs ) dissymmetry factors associated to the first Cotton effect of the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectrum. Considering the data for 170 [n]-helicenes (n = 4-11), overall we found reasonable correlations between glum and gabs . Despite a few notable exceptions, this would confirm a similarity in the stereochemistry of the ground and emitting excited states for most helicenes. These results may be useful in rationalizing chiroptical data and help chemists in designing new helicene structures with the desired CPL properties.

Abstract
In this article, effects of di-, tetra-, and octafluorination on the structural and chiroptical properties of carbo[5-8]helicenes are reported. Three fluorinated derivatives are designed from each parent carbohelicene by substituting either one, two, or four hydrogens at each terminal ring with fluorine atoms. Excited states properties such as UV-vis and CD spectra of all the six fluorinated carbohelicenes are computed at the ADC(2)/def2-TZVP level, and the results are compared against the results of their respective parent carbohelicene. In addition, CPL properties are also computed at the same level of theory. In the case of carbo[5]helicene (5H), gCPL decreases with an increase in the degree of fluorination. A similar observation is made in carbo[6]helicene (6H) too, although the value for tetrafluorinated 6H is slightly larger than for difluorinated 6H. Di- and tetrafluorination in carbo[7]helicene (7H), and all types of considered fluorination in carbo[8]helicene (8H) produce improved gCPL results. Results for fluorescence rate constants are also shown. Results are analyzed in terms of the transition dipole moment vectors and the angles between those.

Abstract
This paper reports the first magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL) characteristics of racemic helicenes, including four unsubstituted [n]helicenes (n=3,4,5,7) and two [4]helicene derivatives bearing methoxy substituents, in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. The value of |gMCPL | was calculated to be of the order of 10-3 T-1 within 350-430 nm under the north-up (N-up) and south-up (S-up) Faraday geometries in an external magnetic field of 1.6 T. The [n]-dependent MCPL signs were altered by the N-up and S-up geometries.

Insight into the Influence of the Chiral Molecular Symmetry on the Chiroptics of Fluorescent BINOL-Based Boron Chelates. PROCEEDINGS OF ECSOC- ... Abstract
The prominent influence of the molecular symmetry, as defined by the symmetry point group, on the chiroptical behavior (electronic circular dichroism and, especially, circularly polarized luminescence) of simple fluorescent boron chelates (BODIPY and related BOPHY analogues) is studied and discussed. It is shown that increasing the dye symmetry by means of the D3 chiral symmetry group is a workable design option to enhance the level of differential emission of right- and left-circularly polarized light in BODIPY dyes and related emitters, and that the influence of the level of symmetry is stronger than the influence of the higher number of chiral moieties perturbing the acting achiral chromophore.

Abstract
A series of multiple helicenes was simultaneously synthesized in one step by intramolecular cyclization of a single chrysene derivative containing two 2-[(4-alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl]phenyl units accompanied by rearrangements of the aryl pendants. The electrophile-induced double cyclization with or without aryl migrations proceeded efficiently under acidic conditions to afford annulative π-extension of the chrysene units and produced quadruple (QH-2), triple (TH-2), and double (DH-2) helicenes containing [4]- and/or [5]helicene frameworks with dynamic and/or static helicene chirality in one step. Three multiple helicenes' structures were determined by X-ray crystallography and/or density functional theory calculations. The multiple TH-2 and DH-2 helicenes were separated into enantiomers because of the stable one and two [5]helicene moieties, respectively, and showed intense circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. Although QH-2, which comprises four [4]helicene subunits, was not resolved into enantiomers, the TH-2 enantiomers were further separated into a pair of diastereomers at low temperature resulting from their substituted [4]helicene chirality.

Abstract
Pure organic materials with the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) property have attracted significant research interest over the past few decades. In this study, a series of axially chiral bibenzo[b]carbazole derivatives were synthesized by adopting palladium- and iridium-catalyzed direct C-H functionalization reactions as the key steps. These compounds exhibited CPL characteristics with considerably large dissymmetry factors up to 2.81 × 10-2 in the solid state, indicating the formation of well-ordered aggregates.

Abstract
We report a new family of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC)-based helical nanographenes incorporating π-extended carbo[5]helicenes bearing an octagonal carbocycle. This family represents a new kind of highly distorted saddle-helix hybrid nanographenes. For the first time, the eight-membered ring becomes a constituent of both a carbo[5]helicene and a HBC and thus, the negative curvature is responsible for twisting both units. This novel chiral motif, namely, oct-[5]helicene results in the largest torsion angle recorded so far for a carbo[5]helicene (θ=79.5°), as it has been suggested by DFT-calculations and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Consequently, the barriers of isomerization become exceptionally high for a [5]helicene unsubstituted in the fjord region since neither racemization nor decomposition were observed at 200 °C for 1 or 3 during 5 h. Therefore, racemic resolutions allowed subsequent chiroptical studies showing the ECD and CPL responses of this novel family of chiral nanographenes.

Abstract
Chiral spiro π-conjugated compounds have emerged as a new class of circularly polarized luminescent organic materials. Here we report the synthesis and (chir)optical properties of a chiral benzo[b]silole-fused 9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (SBF) and π-extended spiro polycyclic arene. The benzo[b]silole-fused SBF was successfully synthesized by a rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular silylative cyclization. It was further transformed to the chiral π-extended spiro polycyclic arene by an annulative π-extension reaction. Less effective spiroconjugation was observed for these spiro compounds through UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. They exhibit circularly polarized luminescence with the dissymmetry factors of up to 0.76×10-3 . Theoretical calculations demonstrate that emission of the benzo[b]silole-fused SBF occurs from one subunit, the structure of which is slightly different from that in the Frank-Condon state.

Abstract
We present a systematic study of vibrationally resolved absorption (ABS), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), emission (EMI), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of aza[7]helicene. Because of the rare experience of theoretical CPL calculation, a variety of harmonic models have been employed to compute the vibronic structures. To fully understand the vibronic effects on the spectral shapes, Franck-Condon (FC) and Herzberg-Teller (HT) contributions, Duschinsky mixings and temperature effect have all been taken into consideration. The performance of different alternative approximate methods has been carefully compared and discussed in detail. The results show that Vertical Hessian (VH) model has a slight better performance on the spectral shapes than Adiabatic Hessian (AH), especially for CPL spectrum. The thermal excitation effect has led to a reduced resolution and a broader spectral width. The moderate HT effects on the different spectral shapes have been addressed. The dissymmetry factors have been correctly reproduced and the main vibronic features of the four different spectral shapes have been successfully captured. A good estimation of the overall spectral width, relative position and relative height of different spectral bands has been presented. The nice agreement with the experiment allows us to present a detailed interpretation of the spectral shapes.

Abstract
Chiral molecules are essential for the development of advanced technological applications in spintronic and photonic. The best systems should produce large circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as estimated by their dissymmetry factor (g lum), which can reach the maximum values of -2 ≤ g lum ≤ 2 when either pure right- or left-handed polarized light is emitted after standard excitation. For matching this requirement, theoretical considerations indicate that optical transitions with large magnetic and weak electric transition dipole moments represent the holy grail of CPL. Because of their detrimental strong and allowed electric dipole transitions, popular chiral emissive organic molecules display generally moderate dissymmetry factors (10-5 ≤ g lum ≤ 10-3). However, recent efforts in this field show that g lum can be significantly enhanced when the chiral organic activators are part of chiral supramolecular assemblies or of liquid crystalline materials. At the other extreme, chiral EuIII- and SmIII-based complexes, which possess intra-shell parity-forbidden electric but allowed magnetic dipole transitions, have yielded the largest dissymmetry factor reported so far with g lum ~ 1.38. Consequently, 4f-based metal complexes with strong CPL are currently the best candidates for potential technological applications. They however suffer from the need for highly pure samples and from considerable production costs. In this context, chiral earth-abundant and cheap d-block metal complexes benefit from a renewed interest according that their CPL signal can be optimized despite the larger covalency displayed by d-block cations compared with 4f-block analogs. This essay thus aims at providing a minimum overview of the theoretical aspects rationalizing circularly polarized luminescence and their exploitation for the design of chiral emissive metal complexes with strong CPL. Beyond the corroboration that f-f transitions are ideal candidates for generating large dissymmetry factors, a special attention is focused on the recent attempts to use chiral CrIII-based complexes that reach values of g lum up to 0.2. This could pave the way for replacing high-cost rare earths with cheap transition metals for CPL applications.

Abstract
We probe the origin of photoluminescence of an atomically precise noble metal cluster, Ag24Au1(DMBT)18 (DMBT = 2,4-dimethylbenzenethiolate), and the origin of chirality in its chirally functionalized derivatives, Ag24Au1(R/S-BINAS)x(DMBT)18-2x, with x = 1-7 (R/S-BINAS = R/S-1,1'-[binaphthalene]-2,2'-dithiol), using chiroptical spectroscopic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Combination of chiroptical and luminescence spectroscopies to understand the nature of electronic transitions has not been applied to such molecule-like metal clusters. In order to impart chirality to the achiral Ag24Au1(DMBT)18 cluster, the chiral ligand, R/S-BINAS, was incorporated into it. A series of clusters, Ag24Au1(R/S-BINAS)x(DMBT)18-2x, with x = 1-7, were synthesized. We demonstrate that the low-energy electronic transitions undergo an unexpected achiral to chiral and back to achiral transition from pure Ag24Au1(DMBT)18 to Ag24Au1(R/S-BINAS)x(DMBT)18-2x, by increasing the number of BINAS ligands. The UV/vis, luminescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopic measurements, in conjunction with DFT calculations, suggest that the photoluminescence in Ag24Au1(DMBT)18 and its chirally functionalized derivatives originates from the transitions involving the whole Ag24Au1S18 framework and not merely from the icosahedral Ag12Au1 core. These results suggest that the chiroptical signatures and photoluminescence in these cluster systems cannot be solely attributed to any one of the structural components, that is, the metal core or the protecting metal-ligand oligomeric units, but rather to their interaction and that the ligand shell plays a crucial role. Our work demonstrates that chiroptical spectroscopic techniques such as circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence represent useful tools to understand the nature of electronic transitions in ligand-protected metal clusters and that this approach can be utilized for gaining deeper insights into the structure-property relationships of the electronic transitions of such molecule-like clusters.

Abstract
Triple helicene-like semi-fused trimeric NiII porphyrins were constructed by alkyne trimerization of an ethynyl-substituted porphyrin and subsequent three-fold Grignard addition to the formyl groups and acid-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization. The presence of stereogenic sp3 carbons in the central bridge leads to small inter-porphyrin conjugative interactions as was revealed by electrochemical and optical properties. Two diastereomers with stable chiral conformations were optically resolved, and the separated enantiomers displayed considerably intense circular dichroism. Importantly, the chiroptical response of C3 -symmetric helical isomer (|Δϵ|=830 m-1 cm-1 ) is 1.8 times amplified from that of C1 -symmetric one (|Δϵ|=470 m-1 cm-1 ). The observed amplification has been interpreted in terms of different spatial arrangements of the three porphyrins.

Abstract
Recently, a rational modification of small organic molecules has attracted considerable attention for designing advanced materials with enhanced circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity. A particular emphasis has been placed on fully allowed π-π* transition of rigid aromatic systems, due to their relatively superior emission properties or quantum yields of luminescence (Φlum). However, their dissymmetry factors (glum), differential left and right CPL intensities, are typically disappointingly low at least in one to two orders of magnitude. Truly useful organic CPL materials, rated by a circular polarization luminosity index (ΛCPL) per single molecule, possess both |glum| and Φlum values high. However, how to improve these two factors simultaneously with a proper molecular design is an open question. Here, we addressed this issue by theoretical and statistical inspection on a possible relation of the glum and Φlum values. According to the analysis, we propose simple, unpretentious, yet pertinent guidelines for designing superior organic CPL materials for the future with large ΛCPL values.

Abstract
In this work, we present the theoretical study of the vibrationally resolved absorption (ABS), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), emission (EMI), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of a boron-fused double helicene, with a detailed and complete discussion of the alternative possible approximate methods. Given the fact that few examples of CPL calculations exist, the potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been constructed and compared with Adiabatic (AH) and Vertical Hessian (VH) models. All the vibronic calculations have accounted for Duschinsky mixings, Franck-Condon (FC) effect and Herzberg-Teller (HT) contribution. Moreover, different HT expansions have been checked and compared, by computing the derivatives of the electric and magnetic dipole transition moments around the equilibrium geometries of the initial and final states. Our results show that both AH and VH models have well reproduced the experimental vibronic structures and VH model shows a better performance in the simulation of spectral lineshapes. They also show that HT effects dominate the shapes of EMI and CPL, tuning the relative heights of the different vibronic peaks, improving the agreement with the experiment for EMI. Moreover, HT effects are the main reason for the mirror-symmetry breaking between ECD and CPL spectra. Furthermore, interesting interference effects between FC and HT contributions have also been addressed.

Abstract
A series of helical tetracenes and pentacenes was synthesized from cationic [6] and [4]helicene precursors. These colorful acenes fluoresce in the far red region. While [4]helicene-based pentacenes exhibit chiroptical properties mainly in the UV region, [6]helicene-derived tetracenes show enhanced ECD in the visible range, in addition to clear CPL responses. This difference is rationalized using first principles.

Abstract
Intrinsically chiral double stapled ortho-oligo phenylene ethynylenes (o-OPEs) 1 show glum values up to 5.5 × 10-2, the second highest value ever observed for a simple organic molecule (SOM). DFT calculations of molecular spectra and properties encompassing electric and magnetic dipole transition moments account for these observations.

Abstract
Materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are currently attracting great interest in view of their potential applications. Here, we reported self-assembled organic nanotubes with switchable CPL performance. A photoacid, 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-pyrenetrisulfonate (HPTS), was co-assembled with an amino-terminated dialkyl glutamide (LG or DG) in mixed solvents of DMF and water. The complex of LG (DG)/HPTS self-assembled into nanotube structures in the tested range of mixed solvents and showed CPL emission. Different mixing ratios of DMF to water in the solvent triggered CPL switching between different wavelengths. It was revealed that the switching of CPL resulted from the different emissions of the protonated (ROH) and deprotonated (RO-) forms of HPTS, which could be regulated by the solvent polarity. Interestingly, the addition of an acid or base could also switch the fluorescence of LG (DG)/HPTS co-assemblies and the corresponding CPL, leading to an acidity-regulated CPL switch. Thus, through a simple co-assembly strategy, switchable CPL was realized in the self-assembled organic nanotubes via both solvent polarity and acidity.
