Accurate Determination of Ion Polarizabilities in Aqueous Solutions

Estimation of thermodynamic and physicochemical properties of the alkali astatides: On the bond strength of molecular astatine (At2 ) and the hydration enthalpy of astatide (At- )

The recent accurate and precise determination of the electron affinity (EA) of the astatine atom At0 warrants a re-investigation of the estimated thermodynamic properties of At0 and astatine containing molecules as this EA was found to be much lower (by 0.4 eV) than previous estimated values. In this contribution we estimate, from available data sources, the following thermodynamic and physicochemical properties of the alkali astatides (MAt, M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs): their solid and gaseous heats of formation, lattice and gas-phase binding enthalpies, sublimation energies and melting temperatures. Gas-phase charge-transfer dissociation energies for the alkali astatides (the energy requirement for M+ At- ➔ M0  + At0 ) have been obtained and are compared with those for the other alkali halides. Use of Born-Haber cycles together with the new AE (At0 ) value allows the re-evaluation of ΔHf (At0 )g (=56 ± 5 kJ/mol); it is concluded that (At2 )g is a weakly bonded species (bond strength <50 kJ/mol), significantly weaker bonded than previously estimated (116 kJ/mol) and much weaker bonded than I2 (148 kJ/mol), but in agreement with the finding from theory that spin-orbit coupling considerably reduces the bond strength in At2 . The hydration enthalpy (ΔHaq ) of At- is estimated to be -230 ± 2 kJ/mol (using ΔHaq [H+ ] = -1150.1 kJ/mol), in good agreement with molecular dynamics calculations. Arguments are presented that the largest alkali halide, CsAt, like the smallest, LiF, will be only sparingly soluble in water, following the generalization from hard/soft acid/base principles that "small likes small" and "large likes large."

Dispersion Interactions in Condensed Phases and inside Molecular Containers

ConspectusThe past decade has seen significant progress in the understanding and appreciation of the importance of London dispersion interactions (LDIs) in supramolecular systems and solutions. The Slater-Kirkwood formula relates LDIs to the molecular polarizabilities of the two interacting molecular species (α) and their interaction distance (a dependence of R-6). When advancing arguments related to intermolecular interactions, it is frequently assumed that molecules with larger molecular polarizabilities are more amenable to larger LDIs. However, arguments related to molecular polarizabilities are not always transferable to the condensed phase. In fact, the underlying bulk and molecular polarizabilities of common solvents show opposing trends. The intuitive concept that aromatic molecules are more polarizable than saturated hydrocarbons and that perfluorinated molecules are less polarizable than saturated hydrocarbons applies to the condensed phase only. When treating association phenomena in solution, where LDIs are generally very attenuated, the use of bulk polarizabilities is recommended, which are experimentally accessible through either refractive index measurements or suitable solvatochromic probes. Such probes can also be used to assess polarizabilities inside molecular container compounds, such as cucurbit[n]urils (CBn), cyclodextrins, calixarenes, and hemicarcerands. These macrocyclic cavities can have extreme microenvironments. For example, the inner concave phase of CB7 has been shown to be weakly polarizable, falling in between the gas phase and perfluorohexane; those of β-cyclodextrin and p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene have been found to be similarly polarizable as water and alkanes, respectively, and the inside of hemicarcerands displays a very large bulk polarizability, exceeding that of diiodomethane. CBn compounds are privileged molecular container compounds, which we exemplify in this Account through case studies. (1) CBn macrocycles are prime water-soluble receptors for hydrocarbons, allowing for the reduction of the binding free energies to two components: the hydrophobic effect and dispersion interactions. To understand hydrocarbon binding, we initiated the HYDROPHOBE challenge, which revealed the shortcomings of both quantum-chemical and molecular dynamics approaches. (2) The smallest CBn receptor, CB5, is uniquely suited to bind the entire noble gas series, where hydrophobic effects and dispersion interactions operate in opposite directions. CB5 was revaled to be a unique synthetic receptor for noble gases, with the dominant driving force being the recovery of the cavitation energies for the hydration of noble gases in aqueous solution. Computational methods that encounter challenges in predicting hydrocarbon affinities and trends for CB6 and CB7 perform well for noble gases binding to CB5. (3) The larger homologue, CB8, allows one to set up intermolecular interaction chambers by the encapsulation of a (first) aromatic guest, thereby tuning LDIs inside the receptor cavity. In this manner, CB8 can be modulated to preferentially bind unsaturated and aromatic rather than saturated hydrocarbons, while the unmodified cavities of the smaller macrocycles CB6 and CB7 show selective binding of saturated hydrocarbons. (4) The (charged) host-guest complexes of CBn hosts are sufficiently stable in the gas phase, allowing for the study of the influence of LDIs on inner-phase chemical reactions. These studies are particularly interesting for the theoretical analysis of isolated host-guest LDIs, as experimental and computational data are directly comparable in the gas phase due to the absence of the solvation effect.

Stabilization of Guest Molecules inside Cation-Lidded Cucurbiturils Reveals that Hydration of Receptor Sites Can Impede Binding

Docking of alkali metal ions to water-soluble macrocyclic receptors generally reduces the affinity of guest molecules due to competitive binding. The idea that solvation water molecules could display a larger steric hindrance towards guest binding than cations has not been considered to date. We show that the docking of large cations to cucurbit[5]uril (CB5) unexpectedly increases (by a factor of 5-8) the binding of hydrophobic guests, methane and ethane. This is due to the removal of water molecules from the carbonyl portals of CB5 during cation binding, which frees up space for hydrophobe encapsulation. In contrast, smaller cations like sodium protrude deeply into the cavity of CB5 and cause the expected decrease in binding, such that the rational selection of alkali cations allows for a variation of up to a factor of 20 in binding of methane and ethane. The statistical analysis of crystallographic data shows that the cavity volume of CB5 can be enlarged by placing large alkali ions (Rb+ and Cs+ ) centro-symmetrically at the portals. The results reveal a hitherto elusive steric hindrance of solvation water molecules near receptor binding sites, which is pertinent for the design of supramolecular catalysts and the understanding of biological receptors.

How chloride functions to enable proton conduction in photosynthetic water oxidation: Time-resolved kinetics of intermediates (S-states) in vivo and bromide substitution

Chloride (Cl-) is essential for O2 evolution during photosynthetic water oxidation. Two chlorides near the water-oxidizing complex (WOC) in Photosystem II (PSII) structures from Thermosynechococcus elongatus (and T. vulcanus) have been postulated to transfer protons generated from water oxidation. We monitored four criteria: primary charge separation flash yield (P* → P+QA-), rates of water oxidation steps (S-states), rate of proton evolution, and flash O2 yield oscillations by measuring chlorophyll variable fluorescence (P* quenching), pH-sensitive dye changes, and oximetry. Br-substitution slows and destabilizes cellular growth, resulting from lower light-saturated O2 evolution rate (-20 %) and proton release (-36 % ΔpH gradient). The latter implies less ATP production. In Br- cultures, protonogenic S-state transitions (S2 → S3 → S0') slow with increasing light intensity and during O2/water exchange (S0' → S0 → S1), while the non-protonogenic S1 → S2 transition is kinetically unaffected. As flash rate increases in Cl- cultures, both rate and extent of acidification of the lumen increase, while charge recombination is suppressed relative to Br-. The Cl- advantage in rapid proton escape from the WOC to lumen is attributed to correlated ion-pair movement of H3O+Cl- in dry water channels vs. separated Br- and H+ ion movement through different regions (>200-fold difference in Bronsted acidities). By contrast, at low flash rates a previously unreported reversal occurs that favors Br- cultures for both proton evolution and less PSII charge recombination. In Br- cultures, slower proton transfer rate is attributed to stronger ion-pairing of Br- with AA residues lining the water channels. Both anions charge-neutralize protons and shepherd them to the lumen using dry aqueous channels.

Diffractive Refractometer Based on Scalar Theory

The measurement of the refractive index typically requires the use of optical ellipsometry which, although potentially very accurate, is extremely sensitive to the structural properties of the sample and its theoretical modeling, and typically requires specialized expertise to obtain reliable output data. Here, we propose a simple diffractive method for the measurement of the refractive index of homogenous solid thin films, which requires only the structuring of the surface of the material to be measured with the profile of a diffraction grating. The refractive index of an exemplary soft-moldable material is successfully estimated over a wide wavelength range by simply incorporating the measured topography and diffraction efficiency of the grating into a convenient scalar theory-based diffraction model. Without the need for specialized expertise and equipment, the method can serve as a simple and widely accessible optical characterization of materials useful in material science and photonics applications.

Identification of Ion Pairs in Aqueous NaCl and KCl Solutions in Combination with Raman Spectroscopy, Molecular Dynamics, and Quantum Chemical Calculations

This work summarizes a theoretical analysis of the perturbation on Raman spectra in aqueous NaCl and KCl solutions with the aim to detect ion pairs. The experimental Raman spectra, both polarized and depolarized, are perturbed by these ions to a comparable extent or somewhat less by KCl than NaCl. This result appears to be contrary to the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation showing that the isolated and separated ions of KCl should have a larger perturbation than NaCl, as the solvation shell of K⁺ is larger than that of Na⁺. The apparent discrepancy signifies the ion pair formation which is more substantial for KCl than NaCl. The MD simulations and quantum chemical calculations revealed that KCl forms ion pairs more than NaCl and that the ion pair formation reduces the perturbation on the Raman spectra more for KCl. The present analysis shows that the perturbed Raman spectra provide a useful sign to evaluate the ion pair formation in aqueous solutions.

The Lyotropic Nature of Halates: An Experimental Study

Unlike halides, where the kosmotropicity decreases from fluoride to iodide, the kosmotropic nature of halates apparently increases from chlorate to iodate, in spite of the lowering in the static ionic polarizability. In this paper, we present an experimental study that confirms the results of previous simulations. The lyotropic nature of aqueous solutions of sodium halates, i.e., NaClO₃, NaBrO₃, and NaIO₃, is investigated through density, conductivity, viscosity, and refractive index measurements as a function of temperature and salt concentration. From the experimental data, we evaluate the activity coefficients and the salt polarizability and assess the anions' nature in terms of kosmotropicity/chaotropicity. The results clearly indicate that iodate behaves as a kosmotrope, while chlorate is a chaotrope, and bromate shows an intermediate nature. This experimental study confirms that, in the case of halates XO₃^-, the kosmotropic-chaotropic ranking reverses with respect to halides. We also discuss and revisit the role of the anion's polarizability in the interpretation of Hofmeister phenomena.

The chelating and sequestering ability of a glyphosate metabolite, the aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) towards bi- and trivalent metal cations, such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Al³⁺, were investigated in aqueous solutions of NaCl, in an ionic strength range of 0.1 ≤ I/mol dm^-3 ≤ 1.0 and at constant temperature of T = 298.15 ± 0.15 K. The investigations on the acid-base properties and complexing ability were performed, by means of potentiometry, in conditions of different c_M:c_AMPA molar ratios and pH values. The formation of insoluble species was experimentally observed in the Mⁿ⁺/AMPA^2- systems, and the solid phases were characterized by means of X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and InfraRed Attenuated Total Reflection spectroscopy (IR-ATR). The dependence on ionic strength of the stability constants of the Mⁿ⁺/AMPA^2- complexes species, determined at different ionic strengths, was modelled by the Debye-Hückel type equation. The sequestering ability of AMPA toward the investigated metal cations was evaluated by pL_0.5 parameter.

Classical Exchange Polarization: An Anisotropic Variable Polarizability Model

Polarizability, or the tendency of the electron distribution to distort under an electric field, often depends on the local chemical environment. For example, the polarizability of a chloride ion is larger in gas phase compared to a chloride ion solvated in water. This effect is due to the restriction the Pauli exclusion principle places on the allowed electron states. Because no two electrons can occupy the same state, when a highly polarizable atom comes in close contact with other atoms or molecules, the space of allowed states can dramatically decrease. This constraint suggests that an accurate molecular mechanics polarizability model should depend on the radial distance between neighboring atoms. This paper introduces a variable polarizability model within the framework of the HIPPO (Hydrogen-like Intermolecular Polarizable Potential) force field, by damping the polarizability as a function of the orbital overlap of two atoms. This effectively captures the quantum mechanical exchange polarization effects, without explicit utilization of antisymmetrized wave functions. We show that the variable polarizability model remarkably improves the two-body polarization energies and three-body energies of ion-ion and ion-water systems. Under this model, no manual tuning of atomic polarizabilities for monatomic ions is required; the gas-phase polarizability can be used because an appropriate damping function is able to correct the polarizability at short range.

A Classical Model for 3-body Interactions in Aqueous Ionic Systems

We present a classical electrostatic induction model to evaluate the 3-body Ion-Water-Water (I-W-W) and (W-W-W) interactions in aqueous ionic systems. The monatomic ions were described by a point charge and a dipole-dipole polarizability, while for the polyatomic ions distributed multipoles up to hexadecapole and distributed polarizabilities up to quadrupole-quadrupole were used. The accuracy of the classical model is benchmarked against an accurate dataset of 936 (I-W-W) and 2,184 (W-W-W) 3-body terms for 13 different monatomic and polyatomic cation and anion systems. The classical model shows excellent agreement with the reference MP2 and CCSD(T) 3-body energies. The Root-Mean-Square-Errors (RMSEs) for monatomic cations, monatomic anions, and polyatomic ions were 0.29 kcal/mol, 0.25 kcal/mol, and 0.12 kcal/mol, respectively. The corresponding RMSE for 1,744 CCSD(T)/aVTZ 3-body (W-W-W) energies, used to train MB-pol, was 0.12 kcal/mol. The accuracy of the classical model demonstrates that the 3-body term for aqueous ionic systems can be accurately modeled classically, without the need to fit to tens of thousands of high-level ab initio calculations. This approach provides a fast but accurate and efficient path towards modeling the 3-body effect in aqueous ionic systems that is fully transferable across systems with different ions.

Modeling of the Refractive Index for the Systems MX+H2O, M2X+H2O, H3BO3+MX+H2O, and H3BO3+M2X+H2O. M = K+, Na+, or Li+ and X = Cl− or SO42−

The modeling of the refractive index for binary aqueous solutions of boric acid, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium sulfate, lithium sulfate, and potassium sulfate, as well as ternary aqueous solutions of boric acid in the presence of sodium sulfate, lithium sulfate, or potassium chloride, is reported. The refraction index was represented by molar refraction. It was described as the sum of solutes’ partial molar refraction and solvent molar refraction. The solutes’ partial molar refraction was estimated from the molar refraction of the binary solutions. The excess molar refraction for these systems was described with the equation of Wang et al. The polarizability of the solutes present in the studied systems was estimated using the Lorenz–Lorenz relation. The results showed the model is appropriate for describing the systems studied; the interactions of boric acid, sodium, potassium, lithium, chloride, and sulfate ions with water molecules are relevant to explain the molar refraction and refractive index, and those for the binary systems of lithium chloride and sodium chloride are also relevant the ion–ion interactions. The model is robust and presents estimation capabilities within and beyond the concentrations and temperature range studied. Therefore, the outcomes represent valuable information to understand and follow the industrial processing of natural brines.

Membrane Exporters of Fluoride Ion

Microorganisms contend with numerous and unusual chemical threats and have evolved a catalog of resistance mechanisms in response. One particularly ancient, pernicious threat is posed by fluoride ion (F^-), a common xenobiotic in natural environments that causes broad-spectrum harm to metabolic pathways. This review focuses on advances in the last ten years toward understanding the microbial response to cytoplasmic accumulation of F^-, with a special emphasis on the structure and mechanisms of the proteins that microbes use to export fluoride: the CLC^F family of F^-/H⁺ antiporters and the Fluc/FEX family of F^- channels.

Enhancement of Ion Pairing of Sr(II) and Ba(II) Salts by a Tritopic Ion-Pair Receptor in Solution

Tritopic ion-pair receptors can bind bivalent salts in solution; yet, these salts have a tendency to form ion-pairs even in the absence of receptors. The extent to which such receptors can enhance ion pairing has however remained elusive. Here, we study ion pairing of M2+ (Ba2+ , Sr2+ ) and X- (I- , ClO4- ) in acetonitrile with and without a dichlorooxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine-related receptor containing a pentaethylene-glycol moiety. We find marked ion association already in receptor-free solutions. When present, most of the MX+ ion-pairs are bound to the receptor and the overall degree of ion association is enhanced due to coordinative, hydrogen-bonding, and anion-π interactions. The receptor shows higher selectivity for iodides but also stabilizes perchlorates, despite the latter are often considered as weakly coordinating anions. Our results show that ion-pair binding is strongly correlated to ion pairing in these solutions, thereby highlighting the importance of taking ion association in organic solvents into account.

Thermoresponsive behavior of poly[trialkyl-(4-vinylbenzyl)ammonium] based polyelectrolytes in aqueous salt solutions

A systematic method to induce thermoresponsive behavior for polycations with salts from the reversed Hofmeister series is introduced.

Conformational Dynamics and Responsiveness of Weak and Strong Polyelectrolyte Brushes: Atomistic Simulations of Poly(dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) and Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium chloride)

The complex solution behavior of polymer brushes is key to control their properties, including for biomedical applications and catalysis. The swelling behavior of poly(dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PMETAC) in response to changes in pH, solvent, and salt types has been investigated using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. PDMAEMA and PMETAC have been selected as canonical models for weak and strong polyelectrolytes whose complex conformational behavior is particularly challenging for the development and validation of atomistic models. The GROMOS-derived atomic parameters reproduce the experimental swelling coefficients obtained from ellipsometry measurements for brushes of 5-15 nm thickness. The present atomistic models capture the protonated morphology of PDMAEMA, the swollen and collapsed conformations of PDMAEMA and PMETAC in good and bad solvents, and the salt-selective response of PMETAC. The modular nature of the molecular models allows for the simple extension of atomic parameters to a variety of polymers or copolymers.
