Photophysics of Zinc Porphyrin Aggregates in Dilute Water–Ethanol Solutions

Excited-State Charge Distribution of a Donor-π-Acceptor Zn Porphyrin Probed by N K-Edge Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Zinc porphyrin solar cell dyes with donor-π-acceptor architectures combine light absorber (π), electron-donor, and electron-acceptor moieties inside a single molecule with atomic precision. The donor-π-acceptor design promotes the separation of charge carriers following optical excitation. Here, we probe the excited-state electronic structure within such molecules by combining time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the N K-edge with first-principles time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Customized Zn porphyrins with strong-donor triphenylamine groups or weak-donor tri-tert-butylbenzene groups were synthesized. Energetically well-separated N K-edge absorption features simultaneously probe the excited-state electronic structure from the perspectives of the macrocycle and triphenylamine N atoms. New absorption transitions between the macrocycle N atoms and the excited-state HOMO vacancy are observed, and the triphenylamine associated absorption feature blue-shifts, consistent with partial oxidation of the donor groups in the excited state.

Nanoscale integration of porphyrin in GroEL protein cage: Photophysical and photochemical investigation

In this paper, we introduce a new type of functional, supramolecular porphyrin conjugate created using the bacterial GroEL protein cage based on non-specific hydrophobic interaction. The synthesis, structure and property of the porphyrin conjugate were characterized by dynamic light scattering, UV-vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. We observed that the model zinc-tetraphenylporphyrin (Zn-TPP) with high hydrophobicity can be well-dispersed in aqueous solutions with the aid of GroEL open chamber, which is known to be a favorable nanocompartment for aggregation-prone molecules. The maximal encapsulation efficiency of Zn-TPP in GroEL was determined to be ~98%. It is further seen that the constructed double Zn-TPP-GroEL complex exhibited good photocatalytic activity in the model reactions of the production of singlet oxygen and the reduction of methyl viologen under illumination with visible light. Moreover, we found that GroEL can significantly improve the photostability of Zn-TPP molecules as a result of nanoscale assembly within its hydrophobic chamber. Hence enhanced water solubility and photostability of Zn-TPP, which are considered as the first two hurdles for the wide usage of porphyrins, were achieved simultaneously by the development of GroEL cage as a building block. Supramolecular nanostructures formed from porphyrins (or related molecules) and GroEL for photocatalysis would greatly simplify applications of such structures.

On the excitation dependence of fluorescence spectra of meso-tetrapyridyl zinc (II) porphyrin and its relation with hydrogen bonding and outlying decoration

Zinc porphyrins are potential candidates for boosting the advancement of various technological applications, including those exploring the molecule's radiative emissions. In this work, the excitation dependence of fluorescence spectra from 5,10,15,20-meso-tetrapyridyl zinc(II) porphyrin dissolved in a binary solvent mixture of CHCl₃: MeOH, is reported. Important modifications in the profiles of the fluorescence bands are observed after exciting the molecules in a broad wavelength range from 350 to 565 nm. We attribute such modifications to the existence of two distinct relaxation pathways, related to two quasi-degenerated potential energy surfaces (PES) in the ZnTPyP's first excited state whose population rates changes for different excitation wavelengths. We also observed that by changing the CHCl₃:MeOH proportion in the binary mixture, a quenching mechanism mediated by the MeOH hydrogen bondings and ZnTPyP takes place, which allows for tuning the excitation dependence of the aforementioned relaxations pathways. Moreover, our data confirm that the addition of outlying RuCl(dppb)(bipy) ruthenium complex linked to the pyridyl moieties of the ZnTPyP ring is also an excellent strategy to modify the excitation dependence of the fluorescence relaxation pathways.

Prospects for efficient solar energy upconversion using metalloporphyrins as dual absorber-upconverters

The novel potential use of selected metalloporphyrins as dual absorber-upconverters in solar photovoltaics is discussed. Additional efficiencies are available if use can be made of the porphyrin's short-lived S2 state, which is formed directly by excitation in the strong Soret transition in the blue-violet and also by absorption in the Q bands followed by rapid intersystem crossing and upconversion by triplet-triplet annihilation. The main challenge in realizing a working photovoltaic based on such a protocol is that energy must be extracted from the S2 state of the porphyrin within its picosecond lifetime. The structure-property relationships that may be used to select metalloporphyrins with the longest possible intrinsic lifetimes are outlined. The prospects for energy extraction from S2via ultrafast electron transfer or ultrafast resonant electronic energy transfer within a solid structure designed to maximize efficiency are discussed. Both MOF and pendant porphyrin polymer structures offer reasonable possibilities.
