Thermal Resilience of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids—Studies on Short- and Long-Term Thermal Stability and Decomposition Mechanism of 1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium Halides by Thermal Analysis and Single-Photon Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

A New 2-Aminospiropyrazolylammonium Cation with Possible Uses in the Topical Areas of Ionic Liquids

Based on the fact that 2-aminospiropyrazolinium compounds and structurally related azoniaspiro compounds belong, in a broad sense, to the class of ionic liquids, we have reviewed them and studied their practical applications. To search for possible uses of a new 2-aminospiropyrazolinium compounds, it is necessary to undertake a comparison with the related class of azoniaspiro compounds based on available information. The structures of the well-studied class of azoniaspiro compounds and the related but little-studied class of 2-aminospiropyrazolinium have rigid frameworks, limited conformational freedom, and a salt nature. These properties give them the ability to organize the nearby molecular space and enable the structure-forming ability of azoniaspiro compounds in the synthesis of zeolites, as well as the ability to act as phase-transfer catalysts and have selective biological effects. Additionally, these characteristics enable their ability to act as electrolytes and serve as materials for anion exchange membranes in fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Thus, the well-studied properties of azoniaspiro compounds as phase-transfer catalysts, structure-directing agents, electrolytes, and materials for membranes in power sources would encourage the study of the similar properties of 2-aminospiropyrazolinium compounds, which we have studied in relation to in vitro antitubercular, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial activities.

Physical and Electrochemical Analysis of N-Alkylpyrrolidinium-Substituted Boronium Ionic Liquids

In this work, a series of novel boronium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [TFSI-] ionic liquids (IL) are introduced and investigated. The boronium cations were designed with specific structural motifs that delivered improved electrochemical and physical properties, as evaluated through cyclic voltammetry, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, densitometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. Boronium cations, which were appended with N-alkylpyrrolidinium substituents, exhibited superior physicochemical properties, including high conductivity, low viscosity, and electrochemical windows surpassing 6 V. Remarkably, the boronium ionic liquid functionalized with both an ethyl-substituted pyrrolidinium and trimethylamine, [(1-e-pyrr)N111BH2][TFSI], exhibited a 6.3 V window, surpassing previously published boronium-, pyrrolidinium-, and imidazolium-based IL electrolytes. Favorable physical properties and straightforward tunability make boronium ionic liquids promising candidates to replace conventional organic electrolytes for electrochemical applications requiring high voltages.

Critical Investigation of Betaine Hydrochloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent for Ionometallurgical Metal Production

The applicability of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of betainium hydrochloride, urea and glycerol is examined with respect to ionometallurgical metal extraction and compared with the ionic liquid (IL) betainium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Hbet][NTf2 ]). The DES dissolves numerous metal oxides, where not only betaine and chloride act as stabilizing ligands, but also nascent ammonia seems to be essential. From such solutions, cobalt, copper, zinc, tin, lead, and even vanadium can be electrodeposited, demonstrating the feasibility of ionometallurgy. However, repeated recycling of the DES is not conceivable. NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry identify numerous decomposition reactions taking place at 60 °C already. The by-products that are formed not only make recycling more difficult, but also pose a toxicity problem. The opportunities and obstacles of DESs and ILs for their application in ionometallurgy are critically discussed. It is shown that a thorough understanding of the underlying chemical processes is critical.

A facile alternative strategy of upcycling mixed plastic waste into vitrimers

Chemical depolymerization has been identified as a promising approach towards recycling of plastic waste. However, complete depolymerization may be energy intensive with complications in purification. In this work, we have demonstrated upcycling of mixed plastic waste comprising a mixture of polyester, polyamide, and polyurethane through a reprocessable vitrimer of the depolymerized oligomers. Using poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) as a model polymer, we first demonstrated partial controlled depolymerization, using glycerol as a cleaving agent, to obtain branched PET oligomers. Recovered PET (RPET) oligomer was then used as a feedstock to produce a crosslinked yet reprocessable vitrimer (vRPET) despite having a wide molecular weight distribution using a solventless melt processing approach. Crosslinking and dynamic interactions were observed through rheology and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Tensile mechanical studies showed no noticeable decrease in mechanical strength over multiple repeated melt processing cycles. Consequently, we have clearly demonstrated the applicability of the above method to upcycle mixed plastic wastes into vitrimers and reprocessable composites. This work also afforded insights into a potentially viable alternative route for utilization of depolymerized plastic/mixed plastic waste into crosslinked vitrimer resins manifesting excellent mechanical strength, while remaining reprocessable/ recyclable for cyclical lifetime use.

N-heterocyclic carbene-mediated oxidation of copper(I) in an imidazolium ionic liquid

The aerobic oxidation of copper(I) to copper(II) was studied in the ionic liquid (IL) 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [BMIm][OAc]. Temperatures above 100 °C promote the deprotonation of the C2 atom of the imidazolium ring and the dissolution of CuCl. 1H and 13C NMR spectra indicate the formation of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex [NHC] CuICl under inert conditions. Upon aerobic oxidation, air-stable blue-green crystals of [BMIm]2[CuII 2(OAc)4Cl2] precipitate in high yield and the NHC is recovered. X-ray diffraction on a single-crystal of the complex salt revealed a monoclinic structure with space group P21/n. The centrosymmetric dinuclear acetate complex [Cu2(OAc)4Cl2]2– has the paddle-wheel motif and is weakly paramagnetic.

Ionic Liquid-Type Additive for Lithium Metal Batteries Operated in LiPF6 Based-Electrolyte Containing 2500 ppm H2O

The presence of trace amounts of moisture in the electrolyte can cause hydrolysis of LiPF₆ and deteriorate the stability of lithium metal batteries. Herein, we propose a multifunctional ionic liquid-type additive constituting a 1-methyl-1-butyl pyrrolidium cation (Py₁₄⁺) and an acetate anion (CH₃COO^-) (denoted as IL-AC in this study), which can effectively adsorb the trace moisture and thus prevent the hydrolysis of LiPF₆ via intermolecular interactions. The prepared IL-AC can also remove HF to suppress the dissolution of transition metal ions from cathode materials through the reaction CH₃COO^- + HF → CH₃COOH + F^-. Compared with the baseline electrolyte, the contents of HF and transition metal ions are significantly lower in the electrolyte with 0.5% IL-AC. Upon the addition of 0.5% IL-AC additive and 2500 ppm H₂O, the Li||NCM811 battery shows a capacity of 153.7 mAh g^-1 after 300 cycles, while the Li||LNMO battery possesses stable capacity retention of 93.22% after 500 cycles at 1C and a Coulombic efficiency greater than 99%. Thus, this work provides a convenient and effective method to absorb trace amounts of water and remove HF in the electrolyte and provides a new path for the expensive and tedious process of water removal from the electrolyte in industry.

Enabling Sustainable Chemistry with Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Fad or the Future?

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) debuted with a promise of a superior sustainability footprint due to their low vapor pressure. However, their toxicity and high cost compromise this footprint, impeding their real-world applications. Fortunately, their property tunability through a rational selection of precursors, including bioderived ones, provides a strategy to ameliorate toxicity, lower cost, and endow new functions. This Review discusses whether ILs and DESs are sustainable solvents and how they contribute to sustainable chemical processes.

Inorganic Synthesis Based on Reactions of Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents

Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are of growing interest as solvents for the resource‐efficient synthesis of inorganic materials. This Review covers chemical reactions of various deep eutectic solvents and types of ionic liquids, including metal‐containing ionic liquids, [BF₄]⁻‐ or [PF₆]⁻‐based ionic liquids, basic ionic liquids, and chalcogen‐containing ionic liquids. Cases in which cations, anions, or both are incorporated into the final products are also included. The purpose of this Review is to raise caution about the chemical reactivity of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents and to establish a guide for their proper use.

Thermal Stability of Ionic Liquids: Current Status and Prospects for Future Development

Ionic liquids (ILs) are the safest solvent in various high-temperature applications due to their non-flammable properties. In order to obtain their thermal stability properties, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is extensively used to analyze the kinetics of the thermal decomposition process. This review summarizes the different kinetics analysis methods and finds the isoconversional methods are superior to the Arrhenius methods in calculating the activation energy, and two tools—the compensation effect and master plots—are suggested for the calculation of the pre-exponential factor. With both parameters, the maximum operating temperature (MOT) can be calculated to predict the thermal stability in long-term runnings. The collection of thermal stability data of ILs with divergent cations and anions shows the structure of cations such as alkyl side chains, functional groups, and alkyl substituents will affect the thermal stability, but their influence is less than that of anions. To develop ILs with superior thermal stability, dicationic ILs (DILs) are recommended, and typically, [C4(MIM)2][NTf2]2 has a decomposition temperature as high as 468.1 °C. For the convenience of application, thermal stability on the decomposition temperature and thermal decomposition activation energy of 130 ILs are summarized at the end of this manuscript.

Reactivity of Ionic Liquids: Reductive Effect of [C4 C1 im]BF4 to Form Particles of Red Amorphous Selenium and Bi2 Se3 from Oxide Precursors

Temperature-induced change in reactivity of the frequently used ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C4 C1 im]BF4 ) is presented as a prerequisite for the rational screening of reaction courses in material synthesis. [C4 C1 im]BF4 becomes active with oxidic precursor compounds in reduction reaction at ϑ≥200 °C, even without the addition of an external reducing agent. The reaction mechanism of forming red amorphous selenium from SeO2 is investigated as a model system and can be described similarly to the Riley oxidation. The reactive species but-1-ene, which is formed during the decomposition of [C4 C1 im]BF4 , reacts with SeO2 and form but-3-en-2-one, water, and selenium. Elucidation of the mechanism was achieved by thermoanalytical investigations. The monotropic phase transition of selenium was analyzed by the differential scanning calorimetry. Beyond, the suitability of the single source oxide precursor Bi2 Se3 O9 for the synthesis of Bi2 Se3 particles was confirmed. Identification, characterization of formed solids succeeded by using light microscopy, XRD, SEM, and EDX.

Imidazolium-based Ionic Liquid as Efficient Corrosion Inhibitor for AA 6061 Alloy in HCl Solution

The corrosion inhibition performance of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate (BMIm), was studied on AA 6061 alloy in 1 M HCl solution at 303 K, 333 K, and 363 K by gravimetric tests, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to detect the surface morphologies and chemical composition of the surface films. The results indicate that this IL inhibits AA 6061 corrosion in acid with maximum inhibition efficiencies of 98.2%, 86.6%, and 41.2% obtained at 303 K, 333 K, and 363 K respectively. Inhibition efficiency generally decreased with increasing immersion time; the major exception was at 303 K, whereby the inhibition efficiency was detected to increase with immersion time from 30 to 90 min and then decrease slightly beyond 90 min. The results indicate that BMIm is a mixed-type inhibitor with a predominant effect on cathodic reactions. Surface morphology analyses by SEM revealed less surface damage in the presence of the inhibitor. XPS analysis established the development of a protective film on the AA 6061 surface which was hydrophobic in nature.

The Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Effectiveness of Analytical Methods Used in the Monitoring of Human and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals in Biological and Environmental Samples-Trends and Perspectives

Recent years have seen the increased utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) in the development and optimization of analytical methods. Their unique and eco-friendly properties and the ability to modify their structure allows them to be useful both at the sample preparation stage and at the separation stage of the analytes. The use of ILs for the analysis of pharmaceuticals seems particularly interesting because of their systematic delivery to the environment. Nowadays, they are commonly detected in many countries at very low concentration levels. However, due to their specific physiological activity, pharmaceuticals are responsible for bioaccumulation and toxic effects in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as possibly upsetting the body's equilibrium, leading to the dangerous phenomenon of drug resistance. This review will provide a comprehensive summary of the use of ILs in various sample preparation procedures and separation methods for the determination of pharmaceuticals in environmental and biological matrices based on liquid-based chromatography (LC, SFC, TLC), gas chromatography (GC) and electromigration techniques (e.g., capillary electrophoresis (CE)). Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of ILs, which can appear during extraction and separation, will be presented and attention will be given to the criteria to be followed during the selection of ILs for specific applications.
