Solvent Free Laminated Fabrication of Lead Halide Perovskites for Sensitive and Stable X-ray Detection

Exploring Non-Toxic Lower Dimensional Perovskites for Next-Generation X-Ray Detectors

Owing to their extraordinary photophysical properties, organometal halide perovskites are emerging as a new material class for X-ray detection. However, the existence of toxic lead makes their commercialization questionable and should readily be replaced. Accordingly, several lead alternatives have been introduced into the framework of conventional perovskites, resulting in various new perovskite dimensionalities. Among these, Pb-free lower dimensional perovskites (LPVKs) not only show promising X-ray detecting properties due to their higher ionic migration energy, wider and tunable energy bandgap, smaller dark currents, and structural versatility but also exhibit extended environmental stability. Herein, first, the structural organization of the PVKs (including LPVKs) is summarized. In the context of X-ray detectors (XDs), the outstanding properties of the LPVKs and active layer synthesis routes are elaborated afterward. Subsequently, their applications in direct XDs are extensively discussed and the device performance, in terms of the synthesis method, device architecture, active layer size, figure of merits, and device stability are tabulated. Finally, the review is concluded with an in-depth outlook, thoroughly exploring the present challenges to LPVKs XDs, proposing innovative solutions, and future directions. This review provides valuable insights into optimizing non-toxic Pb-free perovskite XDs, paving the way for future advancements in the field.

High-Performance Flat-Panel Perovskite X-ray Detectors Enabled by Defect Passivation in Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites

Halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates in X-ray detection due to their strong X-ray absorption and excellent optoelectronic properties. The development of sensitive and stable flat-panel X-ray detectors with high resolution is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, we introduce a novel flat-panel X-ray detector that integrates quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskite with a pixeled thin film transistor (TFT) backplane. We incorporate 2,5-dibromopyrimidine (DBPM) as an additive to passivate the Lewis acid defects in the quasi-2D RP perovskite. This modification results in suppressed ion migration, improved optoelectronic performance, and enhanced operational stability of the device. Impressively, the activation energy of the RP perovskite increases from 0.96 to 1.35 eV with the DBPM additive. As a result, X-ray detectors exhibit a high sensitivity of ∼13,600 μC Gyair-1 cm-2, a low detection limit of 6.56 nGyair s-1, and excellent operational stability. Moreover, the flat-panel detectors demonstrate a high spatial resolution of 3.7 line pairs per millimeter and excellent X-ray imaging properties under a remarkably low X-ray dose of ∼50 μGyair, which is just half of the X-ray dose typically used in commercial equipment. This study opens new avenues for the development of flat-panel perovskite X-ray detectors with significant potential for various applications.

Halide Perovskites and Their Derivatives for Efficient, High-Resolution Direct Radiation Detection: Design Strategies and Applications

The past decade has witnessed a rapid rise in the performance of optoelectronic devices based on lead-halide perovskites (LHPs). The large mobility-lifetime products and defect tolerance of these materials, essential for optoelectronics, also make them well-suited for radiation detectors, especially given the heavy elements present, which is essential for strong X-ray and γ-ray attenuation. Over the past decade, LHP thick films, wafers, and single crystals have given rise to direct radiation detectors that have outperformed incumbent technologies in terms of sensitivity (reported values up to 3.5 × 106 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 ), limit of detection (directly measured values down to 1.5 nGyair s-1 ), along with competitive energy and imaging resolution at room temperature. At the same time, lead-free perovskite-inspired materials (e.g., methylammonium bismuth iodide), which have underperformed in solar cells, have recently matched and, in some areas (e.g., in polarization stability), surpassed the performance of LHP detectors. These advances open up opportunities to achieve devices for safer medical imaging, as well as more effective non-invasive analysis for security, nuclear safety, or product inspection applications. Herein, the principles behind the rapid rises in performance of LHP and perovskite-inspired material detectors, and how their properties and performance link with critical applications in non-invasive diagnostics are discussed. The key strategies to engineer the performance of these materials, and the important challenges to overcome to commercialize these new technologies are also discussed.

Rheological engineering of perovskite suspension toward high-resolution X-ray flat-panel detector

Solution-processed polycrystalline perovskite film is promising for the next generation X-ray imaging. However, the spatial resolution of current perovskite X-ray panel detectors is far lower than the theoretical limit. Herein we find that the pixel level non-uniformity, also known as fixed pattern noise, is the chief culprit affecting the signal-to-noise ratio and reducing the resolution of perovskite detectors. We report a synergistic strategy of rheological engineering the perovskite suspensions to achieve X-ray flat panel detectors with pixel-level high uniformity and near-to-limit spatial resolution. Our approach includes the addition of methylammonium iodide and polyacrylonitrile to the perovskite suspension, to synergistically enhance the flowability and particle stability of the oversaturated solution. The obtained suspension perfectly suits for the blade-coating process, avoiding the uneven distribution of solutes and particles within perovskite films. The assembled perovskite panel detector exhibits greatly improved fixed pattern noise value (1.39%), high sensitivity (2.24 × 104 μC Gyair-1 cm-2), low detection limit (28.57 nGyair·s-1) as well as good working stability, close to the performance of single crystal detectors. Moreover, the detector achieves a near-to-limit resolution of 0.51 lp/pix.

Mechanism of the Anomalous Dependence between Spin-Orbit Coupling and Dimensionality in Lead Halide Perovskites

The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect of lead (Pb) atoms is a consequential attribute of the unique optoelectronic and defect properties of lead halide perovskites (LHPs). It has been found that the SOC effect varies significantly as the structural dimensionality changes with an anomalous dependence; i.e., while the SOC strength monotonically decreases as structural dimensionality decreases from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D) and then to one-dimensional (1D), the zero-dimensional (0D) SOC strength is greater than the 1D SOC strength. The underlying mechanism of such a SOC dimensionality dependence anomaly remains elusive. In this work, we show that Pb 6p energy splitting increases from 3D to 2D and to 1D LHPs due to the increased degree of distortion, leading to a reduced SOC strength. However, the degree of distortion decreases for the 1D to 0D transformation, resulting in reverse SOC enhancement. The mechanism described in this work can be employed to regulate the SOC effect in the design of perovskite materials.

Lattice engineering for stabilized black FAPbI3 perovskite single crystals for high-resolution x-ray imaging at the lowest dose

Preliminary theoretical analyses indicate that lattice relaxation may be used to release lattice strain in the FAPbI3 perovskite to warrant both high x-ray detection performance and improved stability. Herein, we demonstrate stable black α-phase FAPbI3 single crystals (SCs) realized by lattice engineering via annealing in the ambient atmosphere. The engineered α-FAPbI3 SC detector shows almost all the best figures of merit including a high sensitivity of 4.15 × 105 μC Gyair-1 cm-2, a low detection limit of 1.1 nGyair s-1, a high resolution of 15.9 lp mm-1, and a short response time of 214 μs. We further demonstrate high-definition x-ray imaging at a dose rate below 10 nGyair s-1 on the FAPbI3 SC, indicating a minimal dose-area product of 0.048 mGyair cm2 to the patient for one-time posteroanterior chest diagnosis, which is more than 3000 times lower than the international reference level of 150 mGyair cm2. In addition, the robust long-term stability enables the FAPbI3 SC x-ray detector to work steadily for more than 40 years.

X-Site Substituted 2D Cs2 Pb(SCN)2 Br2 Perovskites for X-Ray Detection

2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites have been intensively investigated due to their superior stability and outstanding optoelectrical properties. However, investigations on 2D RP perovskites are mainly focused on A-site substituted perovskites and few reports are on X-site substituted perovskites especially in X-ray detection field. Here, X-site substituted 2D RP perovskite Cs2 Pb(SCN)2 Br2 polycrystalline wafers are prepared and systematically studied for X-ray detection. The obtained wafers show a large resistivity of 2.0 × 1010 Ω cm, a high ion activation energy of 0.75 eV, a small current drift of 2.39 × 10-6 nA cm-1 s-1 V-1 , and charge carrier mobility-lifetime product under X-ray as high as 1.29 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 . These merits enable Cs2 Pb(SCN)2 Br2 wafer detectors with a sensitivity of 216.3 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 , a limit of detection of 42.4 nGyair s-1 , and good imaging ability with high spatial resolution of 1.08 lp mm-1 . In addition, Cs2 Pb(SCN)2 Br2 wafer detectors demonstrate excellent operational stability under high working field up to 2100 V cm-1 after continuous X-ray irradiation with a total dose of 45.2 Gyair . The promising features such as short octahedral spacing and weak ion migration will open up a new perspective and opportunity for SCN-based 2D perovskites in X-ray detection.

Additive-Induced Synergies of Ion Migration Inhibition and Defect Passivation toward Sensitive Perovskite X-ray Detectors

Two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) metal halide perovskites have emerged as a promising material for X-ray detection. However, defects and ion migration generated nonradiative recombination and high dark current could cause severe performance degradation, which hinders their application. Herein, rubrene was added to the precursor solution of BA₂MA₃Pb₄I₁₃ to modulate the performance of the 2D RP perovskite X-ray detectors. The cation-π interaction between rubrene and perovskite could passivate the defects and inhibit the ion migration, resulting in improved performance and stability. The detectors made with rubrene exhibited a sensitivity of 354.30 μC·Gy_air^-1 cm^-2 and a detection limit of 112.85 nGy_air s^-1. This work highlights the synergistic effect of rubrene in defect passivation and ion migration inhibition, providing a facile approach toward sensitive perovskite X-ray detectors.

Improving the Performance and High-Field Stability of FAPbBr3 Single Crystals in X-Ray Detection with Chenodeoxycholic Acid Additive

Organometal halide perovskite single crystals are one of the most promising radiation detection materials due to their unique advantages of high absorption coefficient, long carrier diffusion length, and low defect density. However, the severe ion migration in perovskites deteriorates the X-ray detection performance under longtime and high-field operating conditions. This work reports an effective additive of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), which can suppress the ion migration and improve the performance and the operational stability of FAPbBr₃ single crystals (SCs) in X-ray detection significantl. The CDCA molecules in precursors effectively suppress the decomposition of FA ions, resulting in a better crystal orientation and stoichiometry. The trace amounts of CDCA residues in FAPbBr₃ SCs improve the thermal stability and effectively suppress the ion migration. The resulting detector shows an impressive X-ray sensitivity up to 21 386.88 µC Gy_air ^-1 cm^-2 under -500 V and a detection limit of 15.23 nGy_air s^-1 . The response current of the detector at 225 V cm^-1 field is barely changed under the 7200 s irradiation with a dose rate of 1.949 mGy_air s^-1 . This work provides insights for the additive selection and improving the operational stability of perovskite single crystals for commercial applications.

Recent Development of Halide Perovskite Materials and Devices for Ionizing Radiation Detection

Ionizing radiation such as X-rays and γ-rays has been extensively studied and used in various fields such as medical imaging, radiographic nondestructive testing, nuclear defense, homeland security, and scientific research. Therefore, the detection of such high-energy radiation with high-sensitivity and low-cost-based materials and devices is highly important and desirable. Halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for radiation detection due to the large light absorption coefficient, large resistivity, low leakage current, high mobility, and simplicity in synthesis and processing as compared with commercial silicon (Si) and amorphous selenium (a-Se). In this review, we provide an extensive overview of current progress in terms of materials development and corresponding device architectures for radiation detection. We discuss the properties of a plethora of reported compounds involving organic-inorganic hybrid, all-inorganic, all-organic perovskite and antiperovskite structures, as well as the continuous breakthroughs in device architectures, performance, and environmental stability. We focus on the critical advancements of the field in the past few years and we provide valuable insight for the development of next-generation materials and devices for radiation detection and imaging applications.

A-Site Cation Engineering of Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites for Stable, Sensitive, and Portable Direct Conversion X-ray Imaging Detectors

Perovskite flat-panel X-ray detectors are promising products for realizing low-dose medical imaging, a nondestructive test, and security inspection. However, the perovskite X-ray imager still faces intractable problems such as severe baseline drift, a low signal-to-noise ratio, and rapid performance degradation, which were involved by the notorious intrinsic ion migration of the perovskite functional layer. In this work, sensitive, stable, and portable pixel quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskite X-ray imagers were obtained by an advanced solvent-free laminated fabrication approach. A-Site cation engineering of RP perovskites provides a hint for solving the trade-off between stability and detection performance, resulting in a stable pixel X-ray imager that shows a sensitivity of ∼7000 μC Gy_air^-1 cm^-2, a detection limit of 7.8 nGy_air s^-1, and good 2D multipixel X-ray imaging. This work demonstrates both a high-performance, stable X-ray imager and its robust fabrication, paving the way for adopting a RP perovskite imager as novel flat-panel X-ray detectors.

Vertically Oriented Porous PET as Template to Integrated Metal Halide for High-Performance Large-Area and Ultra-Flexible X-Ray Detector

High-performance X-ray detectors have immense potential in medical and security inspections. However, the current X-ray detectors are limited in flexible, high-spatial-resolution large-scale detection, and integration for imaging. Here, nuclear track-etched porous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is developed as the template for preparing uniform, large-area (≥10⁵ cm² ), and flexible metal halide (MH)-based X-ray detectors. Adjustable high-density vertically oriented porous PET with adjustable thickness can provide proper physical support for flexible thick absorption film, thus improving X-ray absorption ability with excellent bending stability. Moreover, vertical channels can block the ion migration, lateral charge diffusion, and water/oxygen attacks, increasing activation energy for ionic transport, charge collection rate of electrodes, and environmental stability. Hence, the related detectors eventually obtain large sensitivity (6722 µC Gy_air ^-1 cm^-2 ), low detection limit (1.87 nGy_air s^-1 ), and high spatial resolution (5.17 lp mm^-1 ) compared to the detectors without porous PET template. Meanwhile, the device shows no degradation after storage or working under various thermal attacks. MH-filled-PET is also monolithically integrated on the bottom circuit with different MHs and it is applied to single-pixel mode and fast linear-array imaging in a broad range of X-rays photon energy (20 to 160 keV).
