Antibiotic Treatment Preventing Necrotising Enterocolitis Alters Urinary and Plasma Metabolomes in Preterm Pigs

Microbiota, Tryptophan and Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptors as the Target Triad in Parkinson's Disease-A Narrative Review

In the era of a steadily increasing lifespan, neurodegenerative diseases among the elderly present a significant therapeutic and socio-economic challenge. A properly balanced diet and microbiome diversity have been receiving increasing attention as targets for therapeutic interventions in neurodegeneration. Microbiota may affect cognitive function, neuronal survival and death, and gut dysbiosis was identified in Parkinson's disease (PD). Tryptophan (Trp), an essential amino acid, is degraded by microbiota and hosts numerous compounds with immune- and neuromodulating properties. This broad narrative review presents data supporting the concept that microbiota, the Trp-kynurenine (KYN) pathway and aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhRs) form a triad involved in PD. A disturbed gut-brain axis allows the bidirectional spread of pro-inflammatory molecules and α-synuclein, which may contribute to the development/progression of the disease. We suggest that the peripheral levels of kynurenines and AhR ligands are strongly linked to the Trp metabolism in the gut and should be studied together with the composition of the microbiota. Such an approach can clearly delineate the sub-populations of PD patients manifesting with a disturbed microbiota-Trp-KYN-brain triad, who would benefit from modifications in the Trp metabolism. Analyses of the microbiome, Trp-KYN pathway metabolites and AhR signaling may shed light on the mechanisms of intestinal distress and identify new targets for the diagnosis and treatment in early-stage PD. Therapeutic interventions based on the combination of a well-defined food regimen, Trp and probiotics seem of potential benefit and require further experimental and clinical research.

Gut-derived 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid attenuates sepsis-induced acute kidney injury by upregulating ARC to inhibit necroptosis

BACKGROUND

Studies have found that the plasma content of gut-derived 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4-HPA) was significantly increased in septic patients. However, the mechanism of 4-HPA elevation during sepsis and its relationship with sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (SAKI) remain unclear.

METHODS

Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) was performed in C57BL/6 mice to establish the SAKI animal model. Human renal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide were used to establish the SAKI cell model. The widely targeted metabolomics was applied to analyze the renal metabolite changes after CLP. Proteomics was used to explore potential target proteins regulated by 4-HPA. The blood sample of clinical sepsis patients was collected to examine the 4-HPA content.

RESULTS

We found that renal gut-derived 4-HPA levels were significantly increased after CLP. The high permeability of intestinal barrier after sepsis contributed to the dramatic increase of renal 4-HPA. Intriguingly, we demonstrated that exogenous 4-HPA administration could further significantly reduce CLP-induced increases in serum creatinine, urea nitrogen, and cystatin C, inhibit renal pathological damage and apoptosis, and improve the survival of mice. Mechanistically, 4-HPA inhibited necroptosis in renal tubular epithelial cells by upregulating the protein expression of apoptosis repressor with caspase recruitment domain (ARC) and enhancing the interaction between ARC and receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1).

CONCLUSIONS

The increase of gut-derived 4-HPA in the kidney after sepsis could play a protective effect in SAKI by upregulating ARC to inhibit necroptosis.

Distinctive anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol, dihydroresveratrol, and 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid on DSS-induced colitis in pseudo-germ-free mice

Resveratrol is a dietary polyphenol that interacts with gut microbiota to possess various biological activities. To identify the microbial metabolites of resveratrol, fresh feces from 12 volunteers were cultured in vitro. Their urine samples were collected after taking a commercial capsule containing 600 mg of resveratrol. Metabolites were characterized and quantified by UPLC-Q-Exactive plus orbitrap MS/MS. The results showed that dihydroresveratrol, 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid, and lunularin were the major microbial metabolites of RSV with interindividual differences. 3-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid significantly attenuated the inflammatory response of LPS-treated RAW264.7 cells and DSS-induced colitis in antibiotics-treated pseudo-germ-free mice by regulating MAPK and NF-κB pathways. In contrast, dihydroresveratrol did not exhibit significant anti-inflammatory effects, and lunularin exhibited pro-inflammatory effects in cells. This study may help to better understand the health effects of resveratrol and its microbial metabolites.

Necrotizing enterocolitis, gut microbes, and sepsis

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating disease in premature infants and the leading cause of death and disability from gastrointestinal disease in this vulnerable population. Although the pathophysiology of NEC remains incompletely understood, current thinking indicates that the disease develops in response to dietary and bacterial factors in the setting of a vulnerable host. As NEC progresses, intestinal perforation can result in serious infection with the development of overwhelming sepsis. In seeking to understand the mechanisms by which bacterial signaling on the intestinal epithelium can lead to NEC, we have shown that the gram-negative bacterial receptor toll-like receptor 4 is a critical regulator of NEC development, a finding that has been confirmed by many other groups. This review article provides recent findings on the interaction of microbial signaling, the immature immune system, intestinal ischemia, and systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of NEC and the development of sepsis. We will also review promising therapeutic approaches that show efficacy in pre-clinical studies.

Untargeted Metabolomics Pilot Study Using UHPLC-qTOF MS Profile in Sows' Urine Reveals Metabolites of Bladder Inflammation

Urinary tract infections (UTI) of sows (characterized by ascending infections of the urinary bladder (cyst), ureters, and renal pelvis), are major health issues with a significant economic impact to the swine industry. The current detection of UTI incidents lacks sensitivity; thus, UTIs remain largely under-diagnosed. The value of metabolomics in unraveling the mechanisms of sow UTI has not yet been established. This study aims to investigate the urine metabolome of sows for UTI biomarkers. Urine samples were collected from 58 culled sows from a farrow-to-finish herd in Greece. Urine metabolomic profiles in 31 healthy controls and in 27 inflammatory ones were evaluated. UHPLC-qTOF MS/MS was applied for the analysis with a combination of multivariate and univariate statistical analysis. Eighteen potential markers were found. The changes in several urine metabolites classes (nucleosides, indoles, isoflavones, and dipeptides), as well as amino-acids allowed for an adequate discrimination between the study groups. Identified metabolites were involved in purine metabolism; phenylalanine; tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis; and phenylalanine metabolism. Through ROC analysis it was shown that the 18 identified metabolite biomarkers exhibited good predictive accuracy. In summary, our study provided new information on the potential targets for predicting early and accurate diagnosis of UTI. Further, this information also sheds light on how it could be applied in live animals.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor May Be Involved in the Behavioral Changes of Progeny Rats after Exposure to Ceftriaxone Sodium during Pregnancy

Antibiotic exposure during pregnancy have an adversely effects on offspring behavior and development. However, its mechanism is still poorly understood. To uncover this, we added ceftriaxone sodium to the drinking water of rats during pregnancy and conducted three-chamber sociability test, open-field test, and Morris water maze test in 3- and 6-week-old offspring. The antibiotic group offspring showed lower sociability and spatial learning and memory than control. To determine the role of the gut microbiota and their metabolites in the changes in offspring behavior, fecal samples of 6-week-old offspring rats were sequenced. The composition of dominant gut microbial taxa differed between the control and antibiotic groups. KEGG pathway analysis showed that S24-7 exerted its effects through the metabolic pathways including mineral absorption, protein digestion and absorption, Valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis. Correlation analysis showed that S24-7 abundance was negatively correlated with the level of VEGF, and metabolites associated with S24-7-including 3-aminobutanoic acid, dacarbazine, L-leucine, 3-ketosphinganine, 1-methylnicotinamide, and N-acetyl-L-glutamate-were also significantly correlated with VEGF levels. The findings suggest that antibiotic exposure during pregnancy, specifically ceftriaxone sodium, will adversely affects the behavior of offspring rats due to the imbalance of gut microbiota, especially S24-7, via VEGF and various metabolic pathways.

Urine NMR Metabolomics Profile of Preterm Infants With Necrotizing Enterocolitis Over the First Two Months of Life: A Pilot Longitudinal Case-Control Study

Objective: To investigate changes in the urine metabolome of very low birth weight preterm newborns with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and feed intolerance, we conducted a longitudinal study over the first 2 months of life. The metabolome of NEC newborns was compared with two control groups that did not develop NEC: the first one included preterm babies with feed intolerance, while the second one preterm babies with good feed tolerance.

Methods: Newborns developing NEC within the 3 weeks of life were identified as early onset NEC, while the remaining as late onset NEC. Case-control matching was done according to the gestational age (±1 week), birth weight (± 200 g), and postnatal age. A total of 96 urine samples were collected and analyzed. In newborns with NEC, samples were collected before, during and after the diagnosis over the first 2 months of life, while in controls samples were collected as close as possible to the postnatal age of newborns with NEC. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) spectroscopy was used for metabolomic analysis. Data were analyzed by univariate and multivariate statistical analysis.

Results: In all the preterm newborns, urine levels of betaine, glycine, succinate, and citrate positively correlated with postnatal age. Suberate and lactate correlated with postnatal age in preterms with NEC and in controls with food intolerance, while N,N-dimethylglycine (N,N-DMG) correlated only in controls with good digestive tolerance. Preterm controls with feed intolerance showed a progressive significant decrease of N-methylnicotinamide and carnitine. Lactate, betaine, myo-inositol, urea, creatinine, and N,N-dimethylglycine discriminated late-onset NEC from controls with good feed tolerance.

Conclusion: Our findings are discussed in terms of contributions from nutritional and clinical managements of patients and gut microbiota.

Effects of S24-7 on the weight of progeny rats after exposure to ceftriaxone sodium during pregnancy

Antibiotic exposure during pregnancy will adversely affect the growth of offspring; however, this remains controversial and the mechanism is poorly understood. To study this phenomenon, we added ceftriaxone sodium to the drinking water of pregnant rats and continuously monitored the body weight of their offspring. The results showed that compared with the control group, the offspring exposed to antibiotics during pregnancy had a higher body weight up to 3 weeks old but had a lower body weight at 6 weeks old. To determine the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the growth of offspring, we collected feces for sequencing and further established that the experimental group has a different composition ratio of dominant bacteria at 6 week old, among which S24–7 correlated negatively with body weight and the metabolites that correlated with body weight-related unique flora were L-Valine, L-Leucine, Glutaric acid, N-Acetyl-L-glutamate, and 5-Methylcytosine. To further explore how they affect the growth of offspring, we submitted these data to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes website for relevant pathway analysis. The results showed that compared with the control, the following metabolic pathways changed significantly: Valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis; Protein digestion and absorption; and Mineral absorption. Therefore, we believe that our findings support the conclusion that ceftriaxone sodium exposure in pregnancy has a long-lasting adverse effect on the growth of offspring because of an imbalance of gut microbiota, especially S24–7, via different metabolic pathways.

Untargeted Metabolomics Reveals Intestinal Pathogenesis and Self-Repair in Rabbits Fed an Antibiotic-Free Diet

The prohibition of the use of growth-promoting drug additives in feeds was implemented in China in 2020. However, rabbits can experience symptoms of intestinal disease, such as diarrhea and flatulence, when switching from standard normal diets with antibiotics to antibiotic-free diets. The molecular mechanisms related to the occurrence of these diseases as well as associated physiological and metabolic changes in the intestine are unclear. Thus, the objectives of this study were to study the pathogenesis of intestinal inflammation using untargeted metabolomics. This was done to identify differential metabolites between a group of antibiotic-free feed Hyplus rabbits (Dia) whose diet was abruptly changed from a standard normal diet with antibiotics to an antibiotic-free diet, and an antibiotic diet group Hyplus rabbits (Con) that was fed a standard normal diet with antibiotics. Morphological damage to the three intestinal tissues was determined through visual microscopic examination of intestinal Dia and Con tissue samples stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). A total of 1969 different metabolites were identified in the three intestinal tissues from Dia and Con rabbits. The level of 1280 metabolites was significantly higher and the level of 761 metabolites was significantly lower in the Dia than in the Con group. These differential metabolites were involved in five metabolic pathways associated with intestinal inflammation (tryptophan metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, lysine degradation, and bile secretion). Rabbits in the Dia group developed metabolic disorders that affected the intestinal microbiota and changed the permeability of the intestinal tract, thereby triggering intestinal inflammation, affecting feed utilization, reducing production performance, and activating the intestinal tract self-repair mechanism. Thus, the abrupt transition from a diet with antibiotics to an antibiotic-free diet affected the structure and metabolism of the intestinal tract in Hyplus rabbits. Consequently, to avoid these problems, the antibiotic content in a rabbit diet should be changed gradually or alternative antibiotics should be found.

Plasma Metabolomics to Evaluate Progression of Necrotising Enterocolitis in Preterm Pigs

Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is a microbiome-dependent gut disease in preterm infants in early life. Antibiotic treatment is a common intervention for NEC. How NEC lesions, with or without antibiotics, affect plasma metabolome was explored in this study. Formula-fed preterm pigs were used as a model for human NEC and treated with saline, parenteral or oral antibiotics (n = 15-17) for four days after delivery. Gut tissues were collected for evaluation of NEC-like lesions and plasma for metabolomic analysis by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-NMR). Metabolites were annotated, quantified and subjected to statistical modelling to delineate the effects of NEC and antibiotic treatment. Presence of severe NEC lesions, not antibiotic treatment, was the main drive for plasma metabolite changes. Relative to other pigs, pigs with severe NEC lesions had higher levels of alanine, histidine and myo-inositol, and lower levels of 3-hydroxybutyric acid and isobutyric acid. Across NEC lesion states (healthy, mild, severe), antibiotics directly affected only a few metabolites (tryptophan, 3-phenyllactic acid). Together and independently, NEC and antibiotic treatment affected circulating metabolites in preterm pigs. Amino acids and plasma metabolites, partly related to the gut microbiome, may be helpful to monitor progression of NEC lesions after proper validation.

The Neonatal and Juvenile Pig in Pediatric Drug Discovery and Development

Pharmacotherapy in pediatric patients is challenging in view of the maturation of organ systems and processes that affect pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Especially for the youngest age groups and for pediatric-only indications, neonatal and juvenile animal models can be useful to assess drug safety and to better understand the mechanisms of diseases or conditions. In this respect, the use of neonatal and juvenile pigs in the field of pediatric drug discovery and development is promising, although still limited at this point. This review summarizes the comparative postnatal development of pigs and humans and discusses the advantages of the juvenile pig in view of developmental pharmacology, pediatric diseases, drug discovery and drug safety testing. Furthermore, limitations and unexplored aspects of this large animal model are covered. At this point in time, the potential of the neonatal and juvenile pig as nonclinical safety models for pediatric drug development is underexplored.

Hope on the horizon: promising novel therapies for necrotizing enterocolitis

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains among the most common and devastating diseases in neonates. Despite advances in neonatal clinical care, specific treatment strategies and diagnostic modalities remain lacking. As a result, morbidity and mortality remain high. Improved understanding of the pathogenesis of NEC has the potential for improved therapeutics. Some of the areas of research leading to promising discoveries include inhibition of Toll-like receptor signaling, modulation of vascular endothelial growth factor signal pathways, defining metabolomic alterations in NEC to discover potential biomarkers, probing for genetic predispositions to NEC susceptibility, determining mechanistic relations between anemia and NEC, and microflora modulation through the use of probiotics. All of these areas may represent novel promising approaches to the prevention and treatment of NEC. This review will focus on these current and possible therapeutic perspectives.

Metabolomic Insights into the Effects of Breast Milk Versus Formula Milk Feeding in Infants

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This review summarizes the latest scientific evidence for the presence of metabolomic differences between infants fed breast milk (I-BM) and infants fed formula milk (I-FM).

RECENT FINDINGS

Across the studies included in this review, a total of 261 metabolites were analyzed, of which 151 metabolites were reported as significantly associated with infant feeding modality (BM versus FM). However, taken as a whole, the relevant literature was notable both for methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, and heterogeneity between the studies. This may be why many associations between infant metabolite profile and feeding modality have not replicated across studies. To our knowledge, this is the first review to integrate the available literature on metabolomic differences between I-BM versus I-FM. This narrative review synthesized the data across studies and identified those metabolites which show the most robust associations with infant feeding modality. Methodological limitations of the current studies are identified, followed by recommendations for how to address these in future studies.

Tryptophan Metabolism: A Link Between the Gut Microbiota and Brain

The gut-brain axis (GBA) is a bilateral communication network between the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the central nervous system. The essential amino acid tryptophan contributes to the normal growth and health of both animals and humans and, importantly, exerts modulatory functions at multiple levels of the GBA. Tryptophan is the sole precursor of serotonin, which is a key monoamine neurotransmitter participating in the modulation of central neurotransmission and enteric physiological function. In addition, tryptophan can be metabolized into kynurenine, tryptamine, and indole, thereby modulating neuroendocrine and intestinal immune responses. The gut microbial influence on tryptophan metabolism emerges as an important driving force in modulating tryptophan metabolism. Here, we focus on the potential role of tryptophan metabolism in the modulation of brain function by the gut microbiota. We start by outlining existing knowledge on tryptophan metabolism, including serotonin synthesis and degradation pathways of the host, and summarize recent advances in demonstrating the influence of the gut microbiota on tryptophan metabolism. The latest evidence revealing those mechanisms by which the gut microbiota modulates tryptophan metabolism, with subsequent effects on brain function, is reviewed. Finally, the potential modulation of intestinal tryptophan metabolism as a therapeutic option for brain and GI functional disorders is also discussed.

Immunometabolic approaches to prevent, detect, and treat neonatal sepsis

The first days of postnatal life are energetically demanding as metabolic functions change dramatically to accommodate drastic environmental and physiologic transitions after birth. It is increasingly appreciated that metabolic pathways are not only crucial for nutrition but also play important roles in regulating inflammation and the host response to infection. Neonatal susceptibility to infection is increased due to a functionally distinct immune response characterized by high reliance on innate immune mechanisms. Interactions between metabolism and the immune response are increasingly recognized, as changes in metabolic pathways drive innate immune cell function and activation and consequently host response to pathogens. Moreover, metabolites, such as acetyl-coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) and succinate have immunoregulatory properties and serve as cofactors for enzymes involved in epigenetic reprogramming or "training" of innate immune cells after an initial infectious exposure. Highly sensitive metabolomic approaches allow us to define alterations in metabolic signatures as they change during ontogeny and as perturbed by immunization or infection, thereby linking metabolic pathways to immune cell effector functions. Characterizing the ontogeny of immunometabolism will offer new opportunities to prevent, diagnose, and treat neonatal sepsis.

Emerging Biomarkers for Prediction and Early Diagnosis of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in the Era of Metabolomics and Proteomics

Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is a catastrophic disease affecting predominantly premature infants and is characterized by high mortality and serious long-term consequences. Traditionally, diagnosis of NEC is based on clinical and radiological findings, which, however, are non-specific for NEC, thus confusing differential diagnosis of other conditions such as neonatal sepsis and spontaneous intestinal perforation. In addition, by the time clinical and radiological findings become apparent, NEC has already progressed to an advanced stage. During the last three decades, a lot of research has focused on the discovery of biomarkers, which could accurately predict and make an early diagnosis of NEC. Biomarkers used thus far in clinical practice include acute phase proteins, inflammation mediators, and molecules involved in the immune response. However, none has been proven accurate enough to predict and make an early diagnosis of NEC or discriminate clinical from surgical NEC or other non-NEC gastrointestinal diseases. Complexity of mechanisms involved in NEC pathogenesis, which remains largely poorly elucidated, could partly explain the unsatisfactory diagnostic performance of the existing NEC biomarkers. More recently applied technics can provide important insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying NEC but can also aid the detection of potentially predictive, early diagnostic, and prognostic biomarkers. Progress in omics technology has allowed for the simultaneous measurement of a large number of proteins, metabolic products, lipids, and genes, using serum/plasma, urine, feces, tissues, and other biological specimens. This review is an update of current data on emerging NEC biomarkers detected using proteomics and metabolomics, further discussing limitations and future perspectives in prediction and early diagnosis of NEC.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry based serum metabolic analysis for premature infants and the relationship with necrotizing enterocolitis: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Preterm birth and feeding are the most important pathogenic factors of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Metabonomic has been widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of other diseases, but there is no research on the related diseases of premature infants. Compared with full-term infants, the metabolism of preterm infants has its own specificity, so it can easily lead to NEC and other digestive tract inflammatory diseases. Metabonomic may be applied to the diagnosis of preterm related diseases, such as NEC.

METHODS

The model was established with premature infant serum samples from 19 premature infants in our hospital, which was compared with the full-term infant control group. Serum was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), coupled with the analysis of serum metabolic characteristics. The variable important in projection, P value and Pearson correlation coefficient of samples were analyzed by using SIMCA, SPSS and other multivariate statistical analysis software.

RESULTS

Compared to the term infants, premature infants had significantly higher levels of luteolin, and lower levels of xylose, O-succinyl-L-homoserine and lauric acid in the serum. There were some correlations among several different metabolites and clinically related indices (albumin, total bilirubin) for premature birth related diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

There are metabolic alterations in the serum of premature infants, which make contribution to the diagnosis of NEC.

[Serum metabolomics of preterm and full-term infants based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry]

OBJECTIVE

To study the features of serum metabolites in preterm infants based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and to find differentially expressed metabolites in the serum of preterm infants.

METHODS

Serum samples were collected from 19 preterm infants and 20 full-term infants before feeding. GC-MS was used to measure metabolic profiles, and the metabolic features of 397 serum metabolites in preterm infants were analyzed.

RESULTS

There was a significant difference in serum metabolic features between the preterm and full-term infants before feeding. There were significant differences between the full-term and preterm infants in the levels of metabolites such as O-phosphonothreonine, digicitrin, tannic acid, and fructose-1,6-diphosphate (P<0.01), suggesting that the above differentially expressed metabolites were highly differentiated between the preterm and full-term infants. Most differentially expressed metabolites were involved in the metabolic pathways such as ABC transporters, β-alanine and pyrimidines and were correlated with some clinical parameters (albumin and total bilirubin) (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

There is a significant difference in serum metabolites between preterm and full-term infants before feeding. Metabolomics plays an important role in improving metabolic disorders and exploring metabolism-related diseases in preterm infants.

Intestinal microbiota composition is altered according to nutritional biorhythms in the leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus)

Aquaculture is currently a major source of fish and has the potential to become a major source of protein in the future. These demands require efficient aquaculture. The intestinal microbiota plays an integral role that benefits the host, providing nutrition and modulating the immune system. Although our understanding of microbiota in fish gut has increased, comprehensive studies examining fish microbiota and host metabolism remain limited. Here, we investigated the microbiota and host metabolism in the coral leopard grouper, which is traded in Asian markets as a superior fish and has begun to be produced via aquaculture. We initially examined the structural changes of the gut microbiota using next-generation sequencing and found that the composition of microbiota changed between fasting and feeding conditions. The dominant phyla were Proteobacteria in fasting and Firmicutes in feeding; interchanging the dominant bacteria required 12 hours. Moreover, microbiota diversity was higher under feeding conditions than under fasting conditions. Multivariate analysis revealed that Proteobacteria are the key bacteria in fasting and Firmicutes and Fusobacteria are the key bacteria in feeding. Subsequently, we estimated microbiota functional capacity. Microbiota functional structure was relatively stable throughout the experiment; however, individual function activity changed according to feeding conditions. Taken together, these findings indicate that the gut microbiota could be a key factor to understanding fish feeding conditions and play a role in interactions with host metabolism. In addition, the composition of microbiota in ambient seawater directly affects the fish; therefore, it is important to monitor the microbiota in rearing tanks and seawater circulating systems.
