Cyanide Sensing in Water Using a Copper Metallogel through "Turn-on" Fluorescence

Comparative Vision of Nonlinear Thermo-Optical Features and Third-Order Susceptibility of Mechanically Flexible Metallosupramolecular Self-Repairing Networks with Isomeric Organic Acids

Two self-healing-type supramolecular Ni(II)-metallogels are achieved. The choice of proper low-molecular-weight organic gelators such as trans-butenedioic acid (i.e., trans-BDA) and cis-butenedioic acid (i.e., cis-BDA) and triethylamine in N,N'-dimethylformamide solvent facilitates the metallogelation process. Through rheological investigations the mechanical robustness and viscoelastic properties of synthesized metallogels are explored. An in-depth exploration of thixotropic behavior also supports their self-healing features. Notably, distinct variations in morphologies of metallogels are also ascertained through field emission scanning electron microscopy studies. Furthermore, the existence of versatile noncovalent supramolecular interactions operating throughout the metallogel network is clearly revealed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Electrospray ionization-mass studies also explore the construction protocol of individual Ni(II)-metallogels. The Z-scan measurements with a 532 nm continuous wave laser were employed to unveil the nonlinear thermo-optical response of two synthesized self-healing metallogels, i.e., trans-BDA-TEA@Ni(II) and cis-BDA-TEA@Ni(II). Crucial parameters like the nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, thermo-optical coefficient, and third-order susceptibility of these metallogels are obtained. Metallogels show negative signs for the nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption coefficient. The real parts of the third-order susceptibility for these metallogels are much greater than the imaginary parts (i.e., χR(3) > χI(3)), making such metallogels very promising for all optical-switching applications.

An Encyclopedic Compendium on Chemosensing Supramolecular Metal-Organic Gels

Chemosensing, an interdisciplinary scientific domain, plays a pivotal role ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare diagnostics and (inter)national security. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are recognized for their stability, selectivity, and responsiveness, making them valuable for chemosensing applications. Researchers have explored the development of MOGs based on different metal ions and ligands, allowing for tailored properties and sensitivities, and have even demonstrated their applications as portable sensors such as paper-based test strips for practical use. Herein, several studies related to MOGs development and their applications in the chemosensing field via UV-visible or luminance along with electrochemical approach are presented. These papers explored MOGs as versatile materials with their use in sensing bio or environmental analytes. This review provides a foundational understanding of key concepts, methodologies, and recent advancements in this field, fostering the scientific community.

Aggregation induced emission and volatile acid vapour sensing in acridine appended poly (aryl ether) based low molecular weight organogelator

Considerable research attention has been devoted to the development of portable and rapid fluorescence sensors that can selectively detect volatile acids, due to the harmful effects of acid vapour on the environment and human health. Although various types of fluorophores have been reported for sensing volatile acid vapours, regulation of the sensory response using aggregation induced emissive (AIE) based gelators has rarely been reported. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel organogelator that is capable of sensing volatile acids through AIE. An acridine-attached poly(aryl ether) dendron molecular system is synthesized through an aldimine coupling reaction, which self-assembles and forms a gel, exhibiting AIE behavior. The synthesized molecule and prepared gel were characterized using NMR, MASS, XRD, HRSEM and rheology techniques. The AIE property of APD was investigated using steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopic techniques. The sensory response of the APD gelator was tested with various analytes, and the results indicated that APD shows rapid response, particularly to acid vapours, where the detection limits (DL) of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3) vapor were as low as 0.22, 0.9 and 0.30 ppm, respectively. An APD solid film in filter paper shows a visual color change from yellow to red in an aqueous acidic medium, and the effect is reversed in an alkaline medium. These findings suggest that an APD gelator could potentially be utilized to generate a portable acid vapor sensor kit due to its low detection limit and rapid response time, and it could be also be used as a substitute for existing acid indicators.

Aggregation-induced emission activity of sensor TBM-C1 hybrid of methoxy-triphenylamine (OMe-TPA) and dicyanovinyl for cyanide detection in aqueous THF: Mechanistic insights and potential applications

A series fluorescent probes (TBM-Cx (x = 1, 4, 8)) were designed based on embedding various alkoxy chains on the electron donor of triphenylamine (TPA)-based dicyanovinyl (MT) compound with an electron-deficient benzothiadiazole (BTD) for sensitive, selective, and visualizing detection of cyanide in aqueous solution. Due to the nucleophilic addition of CN-, the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of these probes was inhibited by the destroyed conjugated structure, exhibiting excellent "turn-on" fluorescence response toward cyanide anion (CN-) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). However, the alkoxy chains with different lengths embedded in TPA not only enhance the sensitivity and solubility, but also regulate the emission behavior from ICT to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. The binding mechanism and AIE sensing performances between the probes and CN- have been investigated and compared in THF/water mixture by spectral tools and theoretical calculations. The results showed that the ICT-based TBM-C1 probe with methoxy chain showed significantly turn-on fluorescence response to CN- as low as 0.077 μM in THF/water solution at high water fraction (90 %). Due to the AIE sensing process, TBM-C1 was successfully employed to determine CN- in food and water samples, image CN- in living cells and BALB/c mice, and prepare test kits for visualizing cyanide.

Exploration of Variable Solvent Directed Self-Healable Supramolecular M(II)-Metallogels (M = Co, Ni, Zn) of Azelaic Acid: Investigating Temperature-Dependent Ion Conductivity and Antibacterial Efficiency

Molecular self-assembly assisted self-healing supramolecular metallogels of azelaic acid with cobalt(II)-, nickel(II)-, and zinc(II)-based metal acetate salts were successfully fabricated. Individually, N,N'-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide were immobilized within these distinctly synthesized soft-scaffolds of metallogels to attain their semisolid viscoelastic nature. Rheological experiments such as amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and thixotropic measurements were executed for these metallogels to ratify their gel features. The different extents of supramolecular interactions operating within these solvent-directed metallogels were clearly reflected in terms of their distinct morphological patterns as investigated through field emission scanning electron microscopy. Comparative infrared (IR) spectral properties of metallogels along with individual metal salts and azelaic acid were analyzed. These experimental data clearly depict the significant shifting of Fourier transform (FT)-IR peaks of xerogel samples of different metallogels from the gel-forming precursors. The networks present within the soft-scaffold are evidently illustrated by the electrospray ionization-mass experimental data. The temperature-dependent ionic conductivity studies with these solvent-directed versatile metallogel systems were investigated through impedance spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopic studies clearly demonstrate that the ion-transportation within the gel matrix depends not only on the types of cations but also on the dielectric properties of the immobilized solvents. The antipathogenic effect of these metallogel systems has also been explored by testing their effectiveness against human pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC 109) and Vibrio parahemolyticus, and Gram-positive bacteria like Bacillus cereus (MTCC 1272). These gel soft-scaffolds show no significant cytotoxicity against both the human neuroblastoma cell line-SH-SY5Y and the human embryonic kidney cell line-HEK 293.

Spectroscopic and TD-DFT studies on the chromo-fluorogenic detection of cyanide ions in organic and aquo-organic media

A new naked-eye chromogenic and fluorogenic probe KS5 has been developed for the detection of CN- ions in neat DMSO and H2O:DMSO (1:1 v/v) media. The probe KS5 exhibited selectivity towards CN- and F- ions in organic and high selectivity towards CN- ions in aquo-organic media resulting in a colour change from brown to colourless and a turn-on fluorescence response. The probe could able to detect CN- ions via a deprotonation process, which was conceived by consecutive addition of hydroxide and hydrogen ions and confirmed using 1H NMR studies. The limit of detection (LOD) of KS5 towards CN- ions were in the range of 0.07-0.62 µM in both these solvent systems. Suppression of intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT) transition and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process of KS5 by the added CN- ions are responsible for the chromogenic and fluorogenic changes observed, respectively. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations strongly supported the proposed mechanism along with the optical properties of the probe before and after the addition of CN- ions. To prove the practical applicability, KS5 was successfully utilized to detect CN- ions in cassava powder and bitter almonds as well as to determine CN- ions in various real water samples.

Solvent-Driven Variations of Third-Order Nonlinear Thermo-Optical Features of Glutaric Acid-Directed Self-Healing Supramolecular Ni(II) Metallogels

The generation of solvent-directed self-healing supramolecular Ni(II) metallogels of glutaric acid (i.e., Ni-Glu-DMF and Ni-Glu-DMSO) is described in this article. Polar aprotic solvents like N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are separately entrapped into the Ni(II)-acetate salt and glutaric acid-mediated networks to attain the semisolid flexible scaffolds. The gel nature of the fabricated materials is experimentally proven through different rheological tests such as amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and thixotropic (time sweep) measurements. The self-repairing strategy and load-bearing features of the synthesized metallogel are studied in this work. The different supramolecular noncovalent interactions working within the soft scaffold are clearly explored. The formation strategy and the microstructural features of these synthesized metallogels are scrutinized through a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy study and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) morphological analyses. The FT-IR spectroscopy observation displays a considerable amount of shifting of the infrared (IR) peaks of the xerogel samples of both the metallogels Ni-Glu-DMF and Ni-Glu-DMSO. The electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass spectroscopy result demonstrates the plausible construction of the metallogel network. In order to examine the nonlinear optical characteristics of the two synthesized self-healing metallogels Ni-Glu-DMSO and Ni-Glu-DMF, Z-scan measurements are carried out with a continuous wave (CW) diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, thermo-optical coefficient, and third-order susceptibility of these metallogels were evaluated by analyzing the experimental data from the Sheik-Bahae formalism. The nonlinear thermo-optical study reveals that these solvent-dependent metallogels show negative signs of nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient. The figure of merit calculated for these compounds shows good agreement for their use in nonlinear photonic devices.

Design of "turn-off" luminescent Ln-MOFs for sensitive detection of cyanide anions

Two novel 2D lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), namely {[Eu₂(DBTA)₃(DMF)₂]·DMF}_n (1) and {[Tb₂(DBTA)₃(DMF)₂]·DMF}_n (2) (H₂DBTA = 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid), have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction results proved that the complexes possess the same topological structure of a (4²·6)₂(4²·8⁴)(4⁷·6³)₂-connected net. The recognition of CN^- from interfering anions with a low detection limit by "turn-off" luminescence makes them promising candidates for the highly selective and sensitive detection of the cyanide ion. The Ln-MOFs 1 and 2 exhibit excellent chemical sensing properties for CN^- with efficiency, selectivity, and excellent performance in various mixed anions. The evaluation parameters, including the quenching constant and detection limit, have been investigated to obtain the detection performance for CN^-.

A Wide Bandgap Semiconducting Magnesium Hydrogel: Moisture Harvest, Iodine Sequestration, and Resistive Switching

Water harvesting from the ubiquitous moisture is pivotal for delivering fresh water to earth's arid/semiarid regions, and sequestration of iodine from the solution is crucial for environmental safety due to its severe effect on human metabolic processes. In this context, herein, a multifunctional supramolecular metallohydrogel (Mg@TAEA) is synthesized through direct mixing of magnesium nitrate hexahydrate and the low molecular weight gelator tris(2-aminoethyl)amine. Electron microscopy reveals that Mg@TAEA is sculptured in vertically grown well-oriented micrometer-sized flakes. The porous crystalline material (52 m²/g) was found to be an efficacious host matrix for water harvesting from moisture (847 mg/g). Mg@TAEA shows effective (513 mg/g) iodine sequestration from solution and adsorption of carbon dioxide (15 mg/g). The wide bandgap semiconducting Mg@TAEA (3.6 eV) material is a potential candidate for building memory devices, and the I_on/I_off ratio of the device based on the indium tin oxide (ITO)/Mg@TAEA/Ag heterostructure was found to be ∼62. We further extended our work by analyzing the charge transport properties of the system and found space charge limited conduction (SCLC) and trap-filled SCLC to be responsible for the nonlinear transport behavior observed in the device.

Functional supramolecular gels based on poly(benzyl ether) dendrons and dendrimers

Supramolecular gels, as a fascinating and useful class of soft materials, constructed from low-molecular-weight gelators via noncovalent interactions have attracted increasing attention in the past few decades. Dendrimers and dendrons are highly branched and monodisperse macromolecules with a well-defined three-dimensional architecture and multiple surface functionalities. In recent years, poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers and dendrons are found to be powerful candidates for constructing gel phase materials in organic or aqueous media due to the advantages of capability of forming multiple noncovalent interactions and significant steric impact. In this Feature Article, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in supramolecular gels involving poly(benzyl ether) dendritic molecules. Firstly, we outline the molecular design strategies of dendritic gelators with an emphasis on the discussion of their gelating units and position in molecular structures. Subsequently, we discuss the potential applications of dendritic gels in light harvesting, stimuli responsive materials, sensors and environmental remediation. In addition, the potential challenges and future perspectives of poly(benzyl ether) dendritic gels have also been discussed. It is hoped that this feature article will attract increasing attention and provide some valuable insights for the future design and evolution of supramolecular gels.

Multi analyte sensing of amphiphilic tridentate bis(benzimidazolyl)pyridine incorporated in liposomes and potential application in enzyme assay

A liposome based nanosensor Lipo-1 for efficient detection of copper, cyanide (CN^-) and ATP in a pure aqueous medium has been described. Lipo-1 shows a fluorescence ON-OFF response with copper. However, Lipo-1.Cu (Lipo-1 and copper ensemble) was used for the OFF-ON detection of ATP with nM and CN^- with μM detection levels, lower than the WHO permissible level for safe drinking. Lipo-1 has better and enhanced binding properties over the counter organic amphiphilic compound Bzimpy-LC, which is not soluble in water. The significant changes in the emission spectra in the presence of Cu²⁺, CN^- and ATP ions, as variable inputs, are used to construct INHIBIT and OR logic operations in a nano-scale environment. The fluorescent detection of CN^- ions with Lipo-1.Cu was used to develop an enzyme assay for β-glucosidase using amygdalin as the substrate. β-Glucosidase enzymatic activity was monitored by the emission OFF-ON signal of the probe Lipo-1.Cu by CN^- detection. This approach could be an efficient method for developing a fluorescence-based β-glucosidase enzyme assay. A switch ON luminescence response, low detection limit, fast response, 100% aqueous solution, biocompatibility, multi-analyte detection, and improved sensitivity and selectivity of Bzimpy-LC in lipid bilayer membranes are the main features of the nanoprobe Lipo-1. These properties give it a clear advantage for analytical applications.

A croconate-directed supramolecular self-healable Cd(II)-metallogel with dispersed 2D-nanosheets of hexagonal boron nitride: a comparative outcome of the charge-transport phenomena and non-linear rectifying behaviour of semiconducting diodes

The use of croconic acid disodium salt (CADS) as an organic gelator with Cd(II) salt to obtain an efficient soft-scaffold supramolecular self-healable metallogel (Cd-CADS) in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) media was investigated following an ultrasonication technique. The experimentally scrutinized rheological values of the fabricated metallogel not only revealed the visco-elastic property and mechanical stiffness, but also exposed the self-healable behaviour of the gel material. Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) were incorporated within the gel network to obtain a 2D nanosheet dispersed metallogel of Cd(II) croconate (h-BN@Cd-CADS). The microstructural investigations of the original gel network and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) 2D nanosheet dispersed gel-network were performed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and established the interconnecting rod-like fibrous type morphological patterns and inter-connected hexagonal type rod-shaped architecture pattern, respectively. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was used to visualize the morphological distinction of the Cd-CADS metallogel with the h-BN 2D nanosheets. The infrared spectral (FT-IR) outputs helped to identify the formation pathway to construct the semi-solid self-healing flexible metallogel and h-BN 2D nanosheet dispersed metallogel nanocomposite, respectively. Fascinating electronic-charge transportation was revealed in the as-fabricated Cd-CADS and h-BN@Cd-CADS metallogel-based devices. Furthermore, h-BN 2D-nanosheet-directed modulation of the non-linear rectifying feature of the supramolecular Cd-CADS-metallogel was observed, with the h-BN@Cd-CADS metallogel showing a greater rectifying property, implying that it has a higher conductivity compared to the Cd-CADS metallogel.

Recent Development in Coordination Compounds as a Sensor for Cyanide Ions in Biological and Environmental Segments

Rapid detection of toxic ions has taken great attention in the last few decades due to its importance in maintaining a greener environment for human beings. The extreme toxicity of cyanide (CN-) ions is a great environmental concern as its continued industrial use generates interest in facile and sensitive methods for CN- ions detection. Since CN- ions act as a ligand in coordination chemistry which rapidly coordinates with suitable metals and forms complexes, this ability was mainly explored in its detection. It also attacks the central metal in coordination compounds and gives a fluorimetric response. Coordination compounds behave as a sensor for the detection of important ions like CN- ions and have gained great attention due to their facile synthesis, multianalyte detection, clear detection and low detection limit. Recently, considerable efforts have been devoted to the detection and quantification of hazardous multianalyte using a single probe. Cu2+ complexes are the main complexes used for CN- ions detection; however, the complexes of many other metals are also used as sensors. Four basic types of interaction have been discussed in coordination compound sensors for CN- detection. The performances of different sensors are compared with one another and the sensors which have the lowest detection limit are highlighted. This review comprises the progress made by coordination compounds as sensors for the detection of CN- ions in the last six years (2015-2021). To the best of our knowledge, there is no review on coordination compounds as a sensor for CN- ions during this period. [Figure: see text].

Self-Assembled Copper Metallogel Bearing Terpyridine and Its Application as a Catalyst for the Click Reaction in Water

Metallogels have attracted a great deal of interest because of their intriguing properties and applications in chemsensors, batteries, catalysis, and other fields. In this work, a novel ligand bearing terpyridine and hydroxyamine units was designed and synthesized. The ligand selectively gelated with copper ions in water by heating and cooling or sonication. Different physicochemical studies [Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and rheology] were conducted to characterize the gels. We show that coordination interaction, π-π interaction, and noncovalent interaction had obvious effects on the properties of the gel. Additionally, a stable radical hydrogel could be obtained by ultrasound treatment, which was accompanied by color variation from green to blue. This was further confirmed by UV-vis and EPR experiments. Furthermore, the copper metallogels were developed as catalysts for the preparation of 1,2,3-triazole derivatives in water at 25 °C. Although various types of catalysts have been investigated, the use of metallogels as catalysts for the click reaction in water has been scarce. This strategy shows the process is simple, affords a high yield, and is "green" and economical.

Stretchable, Environment-Stable, and Knittable Ionic Conducting Fibers Based on Metallogels for Wearable Wide-Range and Durable Strain Sensors

The construction of fibrous ionic conductors and sensors with large stretchability, low-temperature tolerance, and environmental stability is highly desired for practical wearable devices yet is challenging. Herein, metallogels (MOGs) with a rapidly reversible force-stimulated sol-gel transition were employed and encapsulated into a hollow thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) microfiber through a simple coaxial spinning. The resultant MOG@TPE coaxial fiber exhibited a high stretchability (>100%) in a broad temperature range (-50 to 50 °C). The MOG@TPE fibrous strain sensor demonstrated a high-yet-linear working curve, fast response time (<100 ms), highly stable conductivity under large deformation, and excellent cycling stability (>3000 cycles). The MOG@TPE fibrous sensors were demonstrated to be directly attached to the human skin to monitor the real-time movements of large/facet joints of the elbow, wrist, finger, and knee. It is believed that the present work for preparing the stretchable ionic conductive fibers holds great promise for applications in fibrous wearable sensors with broad temperature range, large stretchability, stable conductivity, and high wearing comfort.

Metal-ion-mediated synergistic coordination: construction of AIE-metallogel sensor arrays for anions and amino acids

Naked-eye colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent Schiff base sensor for cyanide and aluminum (III) detection in food samples and cell imaging applications

A new efficient Schiff base sensor SB3 for fluorescent and colorimetric "naked-eye" "turn-on" sensing of cyanide anion (CN^-) with excellent sensitivity and selectivity was developed. The 4,4'-(perfluoropropane-2,2-diyl)bisphenol group and two phenyl groups were covalently linked by two C = N bonds to extend the conjugation length. The four hydroxyl groups can improve the water solubility of the SB3 sensor. The SB3 sensor exhibited high specificity towards CN^- by interrupting its intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in a color change and remarkable "turn-on" green fluorescence emission. The sensing mechanism is caused by the nucleophilic addition of CN- toward imine groups of the SB3 sensor, leading to breaks of the conjugation, fluorescent spectral changes, and color change. It was confirmed by ¹H NMR titration and Mass spectra. The detection limits for CN^- and Al³⁺obtained by fluorescence spectrum are 0.80 µM and 0.25 µM, respectively. The SB3 sensor can act as an efficient chemical sensor for detecting the CN^- and Al³⁺ ions under common environmental and physiological conditions (pH 5-12). Besides, the sensor can also detect CN^- in food materials (such as sprouting potatoes and cassava flour) and imaging CN^-in living cells with strong "turn-on" fluorescence at 490 nm. SB3 is an excellent CN^- sensor that exhibits some advantages, including easy synthesis, distinct fluorescence and color change, high selectivity, low detection limit, and good anti-interference ability to analyze solution and food samples, together with fluorescence cell imaging.

Selective and Sensitive Fluorescence Turn-On Detection of Cyanide Ions in Water by Post Metallization of a MOF

Owing to detrimental impact of cyanide ion (CN^- ) towards the entire living system as well as its availability in drinking water, it has become very important developing potential sensory materials for the selective and sensitive recognition of CN^- ions in water. In the domain of sensory materials, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have been considered as a promising candidate owing to their unique host-guest interaction, where MOFs can serve as an ideal scaffold for encapsulating relevant guest molecules rendering specific functionality. In this study, a post-synthetically modified MOF (viz., CuCl₂ @MOF-867) was applied to recognize cyanide (CN^- ) ions in water via "turn-on" response. The bipyridyl functionalities in MOF-867 were used to perform post-synthetic metalation to infiltrate CuCl₂ inside porous architecture of the MOF. Moreover, a CuCl₂ @MOF-867 based probe demonstrated highly selective and sensitive aqueous phase recognition of CN^- ions even in the presence of other interfering anions such as Br^- , NO₃ ^- , I^- , SO₄ ^2- , OAc^- , SCN^- , NO₂ ^- , etc. The selective binding of CN^- ions to the copper-metal center has led to the generation of stable Cu(CN)₂ species. This phenomenon has further resulted in a fluorescence turn-on response. The aqueous phase cyanide detection by the rationally modified MOF system exhibited very low limit of detection (0.19 μM), which meets the standardized limit stated by World Health Organization (WHO) that is 1.9 μM.

Evolution of Supramolecular Systems Towards Next-Generation Biosensors

Supramolecular materials, which rely on dynamic non-covalent interactions, present a promising approach to advance the capabilities of currently available biosensors. The weak interactions between supramolecular monomers allow for adaptivity and responsiveness of supramolecular or self-assembling systems to external stimuli. In many cases, these characteristics improve the performance of recognition units, reporters, or signal transducers of biosensors. The facile methods for preparing supramolecular materials also allow for straightforward ways to combine them with other functional materials and create multicomponent sensors. To date, biosensors with supramolecular components are capable of not only detecting target analytes based on known ligand affinity or specific host-guest interactions, but can also be used for more complex structural detection such as chiral sensing. In this Review, we discuss the advancements in the area of biosensors, with a particular highlight on the designs of supramolecular materials employed in analytical applications over the years. We will first describe how different types of supramolecular components are currently used as recognition or reporter units for biosensors. The working mechanisms of detection and signal transduction by supramolecular systems will be presented, as well as the important hierarchical characteristics from the monomers to assemblies that contribute to selectivity and sensitivity. We will then examine how supramolecular materials are currently integrated in different types of biosensing platforms. Emerging trends and perspectives will be outlined, specifically for exploring new design and platforms that may bring supramolecular sensors a step closer towards practical use for multiplexed or differential sensing, higher throughput operations, real-time monitoring, reporting of biological function, as well as for environmental studies.

Stimuli responsive dynamic transformations in supramolecular gels

Supramolecular gels are formed by the self-assembly of small molecules under the influence of various non-covalent interactions. As the interactions are individually weak and reversible, it is possible to perturb the gels easily, which in turn enables fine tuning of their properties. Synthetic supramolecular gels are kinetically trapped and usually do not show time variable changes in material properties after formation. However, such materials potentially become switchable when exposed to external stimuli like temperature, pH, light, enzyme, redox, and chemical analytes resulting in reconfiguration of gel matrix into a different type of network. Such transformations allow gel-to-gel transitions while the changes in the molecular aggregation result in alteration of physical and chemical properties of the gel with time. Here, we discuss various methods that have been used to achieve gel-to-gel transitions by modifying a pre-formed gel material through external perturbation. We also describe methods that allow time-dependent autonomous switching of gels into different networks enabling synthesis of next generation functional materials. Dynamic modification of gels allows construction of an array of supramolecular gels with various properties from a single material which eventually extend the limit of applications of the gels. In some cases, gel-to-gel transitions lead to materials that cannot be accessed directly. Finally, we point out the necessity and possibility of further exploration of the field.

Rapid recognition of fatal cyanide in water in a wide pH range by a trifluoroacetamido based metal–organic framework
