Effects of Line and Pillar Array Microengineered SiO2 Thin Films on the Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Influence of nanosecond laser surface patterning on dental 3Y-TZP: Effects on the topography, hydrothermal degradation and cell response

OBJECTIVES

Laser surface micropatterning of dental-grade zirconia (3Y-TZP) was explored with the objective of providing defined linear patterns capable of guiding bone-cell response.

METHODS

A nanosecond (ns-) laser was employed to fabricate microgrooves on the surface of 3Y-TZP discs, yielding three different groove periodicities (i.e., 30, 50 and 100 µm). The resulting topography and surface damage were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy techniques were employed to assess the hydrothermal degradation resistance of the modified topographies. Preliminary biological studies were conducted to evaluate adhesion (6 h) of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) to the patterns in terms of cell number and morphology. Finally, Staphylococcus aureus adhesion (4 h) to the microgrooves was investigated.

RESULTS

The surface analysis showed grooves of approximately 1.8 µm height that exhibited surface damage in the form of pile-up at the edge of the microgrooves, microcracks and cavities. Accelerated aging tests revealed a slight decrease of the hydrothermal degradation resistance after laser patterning, and the Raman mapping showed the presence of monoclinic phase heterogeneously distributed along the patterned surfaces. An increase of the hMSC area was identified on all the microgrooved surfaces, although only the 50 µm periodicity, which is closer to the cell size, significantly favored cell elongation and alignment along the grooves. A decrease in Staphylococcus aureus adhesion was observed on the investigated micropatterns.

SIGNIFICANCE

The study suggests that linear microgrooves of 50 µm periodicity may help in promoting hMSC adhesion and alignment, while reducing bacterial cell attachment.

Effects of Biomimetic Micropatterned Surfaces on the Adhesion and Morphology of Cervical Cancer Cells

It has been demonstrated that micropatterned surfaces have an important influence on modulating cellular behavior. In recent years, with the rapid development of microfabrication techniques and in-depth study of nature, an increasing number of patterned structures imitating natural organisms have been successfully fabricated and widely evaluated. However, there are only a few reports about biomimetic patterned microstructures in biologically related fields. In our work, micropatterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was fabricated by mimicking the surface microstructures of natural Trifolium and Parthenocissus tricuspidata leaves using the template duplication method. The interactions between the two types of biomimetic micro-PDMS surfaces and two kinds of human cervical cancer cells (HeLa and SiHa) were investigated. HeLa and SiHa cells cultured on the two micropatterned PDMS samples exhibited more stretchable morphology, higher diffusion, and a much lower nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio than those cultured on flat PDMS surfaces, indicating a higher adhesion area of the cells. Both of the micro-PDMS substrates were found to induce significantly different morphological changes between HeLa and SiHa cells. This suggests that the micropatterned structure affects cell adhesion and morphology correlated with their surface geometric structure and roughness. The results reveal that biomimetic micropatterned surfaces from natural leaves significantly regulate the morphology and adhesion behavior of cervical cancer cells and are believed to be the new platforms for investigating the interaction between cells and substrates.

Effect of Controlled Microtopography on Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Various kinds of controlled microtopographies can promote osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), such as microgrooves, micropillars, and micropits. However, the optimal shape, size, and mechanism remain unclear. In this review, we summarize the relationship between the parameters of different microtopographies and the behavior of MSCs. Then, we try to reveal the potential mechanism between them. The results showed that the microgrooves with a width of 4–60 μm and ridge width <10 μm, micropillars with parameters less than 10 μm, and square micropits had the full potential to promote osteogenic differentiation of MSCs, while the micromorphology of the same size could induce larger focal adhesions (FAs), well-organized cytoskeleton, and superior cell areas. Therefore, such events are possibly mediated by microtopography-induced mechanotransduction pathways.

Effect of Hydrothermal Media on the in-situ Whisker Growth on Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Ceramics

BACKGROUND

There is still a big challenge to achieve a balance between mechanical characteristics and biological properties in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics.

PURPOSE

The present study focused on the in-situ whisker growth on BCP ceramics via different hydrothermal treatments and investigated the influences of these whiskers on the mechanical property and biological performance of the ceramics.

METHODS

Five kinds of BCP ceramics with in-situ whisker growth, ie, BCP-C, BCP-HNO3, BCP-Citric, BCP-NaOH, BCP-CaCl2 and BCP-Na3PO4 were fabricated by different hydrothermal treatments. The phase compositions, morphologies, crystal structures and mechanical strengths of the obtained BCP ceramics were firstly characterized. Then, the in vitro cell adhesion, proliferation and alkaline  phosphatase (ALP) activity of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on the BCP ceramics were evaluated. Lastly, the effects of in-situ whisker growth on the bone-like apatite formation abilities of BCP ceramics were also investigated by immersing them in simulated body fluid (SBF).

RESULTS

The results demonstrated that the hydrothermal conditions, especially the hydrothermal media, were crucial to determine the phase composition and morphology of the in-situ whisker. Especially among the five media used (HNO3, Citric, NaOH, CaCl2 and Na3PO4), the Na3PO4 treatment resulted in the shortest whisker with a unique hollow structure, and kept the original biphasic composition. All five kinds of whiskers increased the mechanical strength of BCP ceramics to some extent, and showed the good ability of bone-like apatite formation. The in vitro cell study demonstrated that the in-situ whisker growth had no adverse but even positive effect on the adhesion, proliferation and ALP activity of BMSCs.

CONCLUSION

Due to the growth of in-situ whiskers, the mechanical property and biological performance of the obtained BCP ceramics could increase simultaneously. Therefore, in-situ whiskers growth offers a promising strategy for the expanded application of BCP ceramics to meet the requirements of regenerative medicine.

Engineering High-Resolution Micropatterns Directly onto Titanium with Optimized Contact Guidance to Promote Osteogenic Differentiation and Bone Regeneration

Topographical cues play an important role in directing cell behavior, and thus, extensive research efforts have been devoted to fabrication of surface patterns and exploring the contact guidance effect. However, engineering high-resolution micropatterns directly onto metallic implants remains a grand challenge. Moreover, there still lacks evidence that allows translation of in vitro screening to in vivo tissue response. Herein, we demonstrate a fast, cost-effective, and feasible approach to the precise fabrication of shape- and size-controlled micropatterns on titanium substrates using a combination of photolithography and inductively coupled plasma-based dry etching. A titanium TopoChip containing 34 microgrooved patterns with varying geometry parameters and a flat surface as the control was designed for a high-throughput in vitro study of the contact guidance of osteoblasts. The correlation between the surface pattern dimensions, cell morphological characteristics, proliferation, and osteogenic marker expression was systematically investigated in vitro. Furthermore, the surface with the highest osteogenic potential in vitro along with representative controls was evaluated in rat cranial defect models. The results show that microgrooved pattern parameters have almost no effect on osteoblast proliferation but significantly regulate the cell morphology, orientation, focal adhesion (FA) formation, and osteogenic differentiation in vitro. In particular, a specific groove pattern with a ridge width of 3 μm, groove width of 7 μm, and depth of 2 μm can most effectively align the cells through regulating the distribution of FAs, resulting in an anisotropic actin cytoskeleton, and thereby promoting osteogenic differentiation. In vivo, microcomputed tomography and histological analyses show that the optimized pattern can apparently stimulate new bone formation. This study not only offers a microfabrication method that can be extended to fabricate various shape- and size-controlled micropatterns on titanium alloys but also provides insight into the surface structure design of orthopedic and dental implants for enhanced bone regeneration.

A Multi-Functional Silicon Nanoparticle Designed for Enhanced Osteoblast Calcification and Related Combination Therapy

Implant materials applied in bone defect commonly focus on the inducement of bone regeneration and neglect to cure complications including bacterial infection and inflammation, which may result in delayed unions or even amputation. In this study, a microporous silica nanoparticle-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-b-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) is synthesized for loading DXMS and the ECM-derived peptide (Sequence: Succinic acid-GTPGPQGIAGQRGVV) in order to enhance the osteoblast calcification and relieve related symptoms. Positively charged PDMA blocks endow the nanoparticle with the antimicrobial property. Moreover, the combination of DXMS makes it have the ability of anti-inflammation and promoting calcification formation. Furthermore, incorporation of the peptide leads to a significant improvement of mineralization and alkaline phosphatase expression in the preosteoblast. After intramuscular implantation in mice for four weeks, the results indicate the composite nanoparticle can promote ectopic bone formation. These combined properties make the composite silicon nanoparticle a promising osteogenic drug appropriate for further study in bone repair and related combination therapy.

Biomimetic Composite Scaffold With Phosphoserine Signaling for Bone Tissue Engineering Application

In guided bone tissue engineering, successful ingrowth of MSCs depends primarily on the nature of the scaffold. It is well-known that only seconds after implantation, biomaterials are coated by a layer of adsorbed proteins/peptides which modulates the subsequent cell/scaffold interactions, especially at early times after implantation. In this work, nanohydroxyapatite and collagen based composite materials (Coll/nanoHA) were modified with phosphorylated amino acid (O-phospho-L-serine-OPS) to mimic bone tissue, and induce cell differentiation. The choice for this phosphorylated amino acid is due to the fact that osteopontin is a serine-rich glycol-phosphoprotein and has been associated to the early stages of bone formation, and regeneration. Several concentrations of OPS were added to the Coll/nanoHA scaffold and physico-chemical, mechanical, and in vitro cell behavior were evaluated. Afterwards, the composite scaffold with stronger mechanical and best cellular behavior was tested in vivo, with or without previous in vitro culture of human MSC's (bone tissue engineering). The OPS signaling of the biocomposite scaffolds showed similar cellular adhesion and proliferation, but higher ALP enzyme activity (HBMSC). In vivo bone ectopic formation studies allowed for a thorough evaluation of the materials for MSC's osteogenic differentiation. The OPS-scaffolds results showed that the material could modulated mesenchymal cells behavior in favor of osteogenic differentiation into late osteoblasts that gave raised to their ECM with human bone proteins (osteopontin) and calcium deposits. Finally, OPS-modified scaffolds enhanced cell survival, engraftment, migration, and spatial distribution within the 3D matrix that could be used as a cell-loaded scaffold for tissue engineering applications and accelerate bone regeneration processes.

Square prism micropillars on poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces modulate the morphology and differentiation of human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells

Use of soluble factors is the most common strategy to induce osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vitro, but it may raise potential side effects in vivo. The topographies of the substrate surfaces affect cell behavior, and this could be a promising approach to guide stem cell differentiation. Micropillars have been reported to modulate cellular and subcellular shape, and it is particularly interesting to investigate whether these changes in cell morphology can modulate gene expression and lineage commitment without chemical induction. In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films were decorated with square prism micropillars with different lateral dimensions (4, 8 and 16 μm), and the surface wettability of the substrates was altered by oxygen plasma treatment. Both, pattern dimensions and hydrophilicity, were found to affect the attachment, proliferation, and most importantly, gene expression of human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs). Decreasing the pillar width and interpillar spacing of the square prism pillars enhanced cell attachment, cell elongation, and deformation of nuclei, but reduced early proliferation rate. Surfaces with 4 or 8 μm wide pillars/gaps upregulated the expression of early bone-marker genes and mineralization over 28 days of culture. Exposure to oxygen plasma increased wettability and promoted cell attachment and proliferation but delayed osteogenesis. Our findings showed that surface topography and chemistry are very useful tools in controlling cell behavior on substrates and they can also help create better implants. The most important finding is that hydrophobic micropillars on polymeric substrate surfaces can be exploited in inducing osteogenic differentiation of MSCs without any differentiation supplements.

Oxide thin films as bioactive coatings

Growth and survival of biological cells (eukaryotes and prokaryotes) on artificial environments often depend on their interactions with the specific surface. Various organic materials can be coated on substrates to assist cells' adhesion and other subsequent cellular processes. However, these coatings are expensive, degrade over short time period, and may even interfere with the cells' signaling processes. Therefore, the use of inorganic surfaces in order to control cellular interactions is of scientific importance from fundamental and application perspectives. Among inorganic materials, oxide thin films have received considerable attention. Thin films of oxides have the advantage of tailoring the surfaces for cellular interactions while using a negligible amount of the oxide material. Here, we review the lesser known application of inorganic oxide coatings as biocompatible and implantable platforms for different purposes, such as biofilm inhibition, cell culture and implant enhancements.

MobilityAnalyser: A novel approach for automatic quantification of cell mobility on periodic patterned substrates using brightfield microscopy images

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Surface topography of biomaterials has been shown to have an effect on cells behaviour. Cell-material interactions can be visually characterized by assessing both cell shape and spreading at initial time-points and, its migration patterns, as a response to the underlying topography. Whilst many have reported the study of cell migration and shape with fluorescence labelling, the focus on evaluating cells response to surface topography is to observe, under real-time conditions, interactions between cells and surfaces. In this manuscript we present a novel approach to automatically detect and remove periodic background patterns in brightfield microscopy images in order to perform automatic cell mobility analysis.

METHODS

The developed software, MobilityAnalyser, performs automatic tracking of unmarked cells and allows the user to manually correct any incorrectly detected or tracked cell. Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSCs) trajectory, migration distance, velocity and persistence were evaluated over line and pillar micropatterned SiO₂ films and on a flat SiO₂ control substrate.

RESULTS

The developed software proved to be effective in automatically removing background patterns of both line and pillar shapes and in performing cell detection and tracking. MobilityAnalyser accurately measured cell mobility in a fraction of the time required for manual analysis and eliminated user subjectivity. The results obtained with the software confirmed how different topographies affect cell trajectory, migration pathways and velocities, with a statistically significant increase for micropatterned surfaces, when compared with the flat control. The persistence parameter also proved the influence of both patterns on the directionality of cell movement.

CONCLUSIONS

MobilityAnalyser is an automatic tool that removes periodic background patterns, detects and tracks cells, and provides cell mobility parameters that characterize the response of cells to different surface topographies. Numerical investigation of narrowband infrared absorber and sensor based on dielectric-metal metasurface

Metasurfaces are investigated intensively for biophotonics applications due to their resonant wavelength flexibly tuned in the near infrared region specially matching biological tissues. Here, we present numerically a metasurface structure combining dielectric resonance with surface plasmon mode of a metal plane, which is a perfect absorber with a narrow linewidth 10 nm wide and quality factor 120 in the near infrared regime. As a sensor, its bulk sensitivity and bulk figure of merit reach respectively 840 nm/RIU and 84/RIU, while its surface sensitivity and surface figure of merit are respectively 1 and 0.1/nm. For different types of adsorbate layers with the same thickness of 8 nm, its surface sensitivity and figure of merit are respectively 32.3 and 3.2/RIU. The enhanced electric field is concentrated on top of dielectric patch ends and in the patch ends simultaneously. Results show that the presented structure has high surface (and bulk) sensing capability in sensing applications due to its narrow linewidth and deep modulation depth. This could pave a new route toward dielectric-metal metasurface in biosensing applications, such as early disease detections and designs of neural stem cell sensing platforms.

Micropatterned Silica Films with Nanohydroxyapatite for Y-TZP Implants

This investigation aimed at developing micropatterned silica thin films (MSTFs) containing nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HA) microaggregates that were not completely covered by silica so that they could directly interact with the surrounding cells. The objectives were 1) to evaluate the effect of the presence of 2 films (MSTF with or without nano-HA addition) on the characteristic strength (σ₀) and Weibull modulus ( m) of a yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and 2) to evaluate the effect of these 2 films, as applied onto the Y-TZP surface, on the morphology, orientation, and proliferation of MG63 cells. Sol-gel process and soft lithography were used to apply the MSTF onto the Y-TZP specimens. Three experimental groups were produced: Y-TZP, Y-TZP + MSTF, and Y-TZP + MSTF + sprayed nano-HA. All surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and tested for 4-point flexural strength ( n = 30) in water at 37 °C. Weibull analysis was used to determine m and σ₀ (maximum likelihood method). In vitro biological behavior was performed with human osteoblast-like cells (MG63). Y-TZP was successfully coated with MSFT and MSFT + nano-HA. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs indicated that the microaggregates of nano-HA were not entirely covered by the silica. There was no statistically significant difference among the experimental groups for σ₀ and m. In the groups containing the films, the cells were elongated and aligned along the lines. The MSFT + nano-HA group showed significantly higher cell metabolic activity than that obtained for the Y-TZP group at day 7. This investigation was successful in producing an MSTF containing nano-HA microaggregates that remained exposed to the environment. The developed films did not jeopardize the structural reliability of a commercial Y-TZP, as confirmed by the Weibull statistics. The MG63 cells seeded over the films became elongated and aligned along the films' micropatterned lines. Y-TZP specimens coated with MSTF and nano-HA showed a higher cell metabolic activity and proliferation after 7 d of culture when compared with uncoated Y-TZP.

Soft Lithography and Minimally Human Invasive Technique for Rapid Screening of Oral Biofilm Formation on New Microfabricated Dental Material Surfaces

Introduction

Microfabrication offers opportunities to study surface concepts focused to reduce bacterial adhesion on implants using human minimally invasive rapid screening (hMIRS). Wide information is available about cell/biomaterial interactions using eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells on surfaces of dental materials with different topographies, but studies using human being are still limited.

Objective

To evaluate a synergy of microfabrication and hMIRS to study the bacterial adhesion on micropatterned surfaces for dental materials.

Materials and Methods

Micropatterned and flat surfaces on biomedical PDMS disks were produced by soft lithography. The hMIRS approach was used to evaluate the total oral bacterial adhesion on PDMS surfaces placed in the oral cavity of five volunteers (the study was approved by the University Ethical Committee). After 24 h, the disks were analyzed using MTT assay and light microscopy.

Results

In the present pilot study, microwell structures were microfabricated on the PDMS surface via soft lithography with a spacing of 5 µm. Overall, bacterial adhesion did not significantly differ between the flat and micropatterned surfaces. However, individual analysis of two subjects showed greater bacterial adhesion on the micropatterned surfaces than on the flat surfaces.

Significance

Microfabrication and hMIRS might be implemented to study the cell/biomaterial interactions for dental materials.

Screening Platform for Cell Contact Guidance Based on Inorganic Biomaterial Micro/nanotopographical Gradients

High-throughput screening (HTS) methods based on topography gradients or arrays have been extensively used to investigate cell-material interactions. However, it is a huge technological challenge to cost efficiently prepare topographical gradients of inorganic biomaterials due to their inherent material properties. Here, we developed a novel strategy translating PDMS-based wrinkled topography gradients with amplitudes from 49 to 2561 nm and wavelengths between 464 and 7121 nm to inorganic biomaterials (SiO2, Ti/TiO2, Cr/CrO3, and Al2O3) which are frequently used clinical materials. Optimal substratum conditions promoted human bone-marrow derived mesenchymal stem cell alignment, elongation, cytoskeleton arrangement, filopodia development as well as cell adhesion in vitro, which depended both on topography and interface material. This study displays a positive correlation between cell alignment and the orientation of cytoskeleton, filopodia, and focal adhesions. This platform vastly minimizes the experimental efforts both for inorganic material interface engineering and cell biological assessments in a facile and effective approach. The practical application of the HTS technology is expected to aid in the acceleration of developments of inorganic clinical biomaterials.

miR-214 suppresses the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and these effects are mediated through the inhibition of the JNK and p38 pathways

In this study, we sought to investigate the expression of microRNA (miR)-214 on the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow‑derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and explore the possible underlying mechanisms. We found that the overexpression of miR‑214 effectively promoted the adipocyte differentiation of BMSCs in vitro, reduced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and the gene expression of collagen type I (Col I), osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN) in the BMSCs. We further found that the overexpression of miR‑214 suppressed the protein expression of fibroblast growth factor (FGF), phosphorylated c‑Jun N-terminal kinase (p-JNK) and phosphorylated p38 (p-p38) in the BMSCs. The downregulation of miR‑214 promoted the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, and increased ALP activity and Col I, OCN and OPN gene expression in the BMSCs. It also increased FGF p-JNK and p-p38 protein expression in the BMSCs. The use of JNK inhibitor (SP600125) enhanced the inhibitory effects of miR‑214 overexpression on osteogenic differentiation, ALP activity, and Col I, OCN and OPN gene expression in the BMSCs. Lastly, the use of p38 inhibitor (SB202190) also enhanced the inhibitory effects of miR‑214 overexpression on ALP activity, and Col I, OCN and OPN gene expression in the BMSCs. These results provide a mechanism responsible for the suppressive effects of miR‑214 on the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs involving the inhibition of the JNK and p38 pathways.

Silicon microgrooves for contact guidance of human aortic endothelial cells

Background: Micro- and nanoscale substrates have been fabricated in order to study the influence of the topography on the cellular response. The aim of this work was to prepare different collagen-coated silicon substrates displaying grooves and ridges to mimic the aligned and elongated endothelium found in linear vessels, and to use them as substrates to study cell growth and behaviour. Results: The influence of groove-shaped substrates on cell adhesion, morphology and proliferation were assessed, by comparing them to flat silicon substrates, used as control condition. Using human aortic endothelial cells, microscopy images demonstrate that the cellular response is different depending on the silicon surface, when it comes to cell adhesion, morphology (alignment, circularity and filopodia presence) and proliferation. Moreover, these structures exerted no cytotoxic effect. Conclusion: The results suggest that topographical patterning influences cell response. Silicon groove substrates can be used in developing medical devices with microscale features to mimic the endothelium in lineal vessels.

Proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat BMSCs on a novel Ti/SiC metal matrix nanocomposite modified by friction stir processing

The aims of this study were to fabricate a novel titanium/silicon carbide (Ti/SiC) metal matrix nanocomposite (MMNC) by friction stir processing (FSP) and to investigate its microstructure and mechanical properties. In addition, the adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on the nanocomposite surface were investigated. The MMNC microstructure was observed by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterized by nanoindentation and Vickers hardness testing. Integrin β1 immunofluorescence, cell adhesion, and MTT assays were used to evaluate the effects of the nanocomposite on cell adhesion and proliferation. Osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation were evaluated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, ALP activity, PCR and osteocalcin immunofluorescence. The observed microstructures and mechanical properties clearly indicated that FSP is a very effective technique for modifying Ti/SiC MMNC to contain uniformly distributed nanoparticles. In the interiors of recrystallized grains, characteristics including twins, fine recrystallized grains, and dislocations formed concurrently. Adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation of rat BMSCs were all enhanced on the novel Ti/SiC MMNC surface. In conclusion, nanocomposites modified using FSP technology not only have superior mechanical properties under stress-bearing conditions but also provide improved surface and physicochemical properties for cell attachment and osseointegration.

Quantification of Type, Timing, and Extent of Cell Body and Nucleus Deformations Caused by the Dimensions and Hydrophilicity of Square Prism Micropillars

Novel digital analysis strategies are developed for the quantification of changes in the cytoskeletal and nuclear morphologies of mesenchymal stem cells cultured on micropillars. Severe deformations of nucleus and distinct conformational changes of cell body ranging from extensive elongation to branching are visualized and quantified. These deformations are caused mainly by the dimensions and hydrophilicity of the micropillars.

Microstructured Multilevel Bacterial Cellulose Allows the Guided Growth of Neural Stem Cells

Repeated photolithographic and etching processes allow the production of multileveled polymer microstructures that can be used as templates to produce bacterial cellulose with defined surfaces on demand. By applying this approach, the bacterial cellulose surface obtains new properties and its use for culturing neural stem cells cellulose substrate topography influences the cell growth in a defined manner.
