Amphiphilic Ferrocene-Containing PEG Block Copolymers as Micellar Nanocarriers and Smart Surfactants

Stimuli-Responsive Control over Self-Assembled Nanostructures in Sequence-Specific Functional Block Copolymers

The precise sequence of a protein's primary structure is essential in determining its folding pathways. To emulate the complexity of these biomolecules, functional block copolymers consisting of segmented triblocks with distinct functionalities positioned in a sequence-specific manner are designed to control the polymer chain compaction. Triblock polymers P- b -C- b -F and P- b -F- b -C and random diblock copolymer P- b -C- r -F consist of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block and a hydrophobic block with coumarin (C) and ferrocene (F) moieties that are grafted in a sequence-specific or random manner onto the hydrophilic block. External stimuli such as UVB light, redox, and chemical cues influence the functional hydrophobic block to alter the packing parameters that are monitored with spectroscopic and scattering techniques. Interestingly, the positioning of the stimuli-responsive moiety within the hydrophobic block of P- b -C- b -F, P- b -F- b -C, and P- b -C- r -F affects the extent of the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance in block copolymers that renders orthogonal control in stimuli-responsive transformation of self-assembled vesicles to micelles.

Phase Behavior of Charged Star Block Copolymers at Fluids Interface

The phase behavior of block copolymers (BCPs) at the water-oil interface is influenced by the segmental interaction parameter ( χ ${\chi }$ ) and chain architecture. We synthesized a series of star block copolymers (s-BCPs) having polystyrene (PS) as core and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) as corona. The interaction parameters of block-block ( χ ${\chi }$ PS-P2VP ) and block-solvent ( χ ${\chi }$ P2VP-solvent ) were varied by adjusting the pH of the aqueous solution. Lowering pH increased the fraction of quaternized-P2VP (Q-P2VP) with enhanced hydrophilicity. By transferring the equilibrated interfacial assemblies, morphologies ranging from bicontinuous films at pH of 7 and 3.1 to nanoporous and nanotubular structure at pH of 0.65 were observed. The nanoporous films formed hexagonally packed pores in s-BCP matrix, while nanotubes comprised Q-P2VP as corona and PS as core. Control over pore size, d-spacing between pores, and nanotube diameters was achieved by varying polymer concentration, molecular weight, volume fraction and arm number of s-BCPs. Large-scale nanoporous films were obtained by freeze-drying emulsions. Remarkably, the morphologies of linear BCPs were inverted, forming hexagonal-packed rigid spherical micelles with Q-P2VP as core and PS as corona in multilayer. This work provides insights of phase behaviors of BCP at fluids interface and offer a facile approach to prepare nanoporous film with well-controlled pore structure.

Redox- and pH-Responsive Polymersomes with Ferrocene Moieties Exhibiting Peroxidase-like, Chemoenzymatic Activity and H2O2-Responsive Release Behavior

The development of compartments for the design of cascade reactions in a local space requires a selective spatiotemporal control. The combination of enzyme-loaded polymersomes with enzymelike units shows a great potential in further refining the diffusion barrier and the type of reactions in nanoreactors. Herein, pH-responsive and ferrocene-containing block copolymers were synthesized to realize pH-stable and multiresponsive polymersomes. Permeable membrane, peroxidase-like behavior induced by the redox-responsive ferrocene moieties and release properties were validated using cyclovoltammetry, dye TMB assay, and rupture of host-guest interactions with β-cyclodextrin, respectively. Due to the incorporation of different block copolymers, the membrane permeability of glucose oxidase-loaded polymersomes was changed by increasing extracellular glucose concentration and in TMB assay, allowing for the chemoenzymatic cascade reaction. This study presents a potent synthetic, multiresponsive nanoreactor platform with tunable (e.g., redox-responsive) membrane properties for potential application in therapeutics.

From passive to emerging smart silicones

Amassing remarkable properties, silicones are practically indispensable in our everyday life. In most classic applications, they play a passive role in that they cover, seal, insulate, lubricate, water-proof, weather-proof etc. However, silicone science and engineering are highly innovative, seeking to develop new compounds and materials that meet market demands. Thus, the unusual properties of silicones, coupled with chemical group functionalization, has allowed silicones to gradually evolve from passive materials to active ones, meeting the concept of “smart materials”, which are able to respond to external stimuli. In such cases, the intrinsic properties of polysiloxanes are augmented by various chemical modifications aiming to attach reactive or functional groups, and/or by engineering through proper cross-linking pattern or loading with suitable fillers (ceramic, magnetic, highly dielectric or electrically conductive materials, biologically active, etc.), to add new capabilities and develop high value materials. The literature and own data reflecting the state-of-the art in the field of smart silicones, such as thermoplasticity, self-healing ability, surface activity, electromechanical activity and magnetostriction, thermo-, photo-, and piezoresponsivity are reviewed.

Review on the contamination and remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal soil and sediments

The rapid economic and population growth in coastal areas is causing increasingly serious polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in these regions. This review compared the PAHs pollution characteristics of different coastal areas, including industrial zones, commercial ports, touristic cities, aquacultural & agricultural areas, oil & gas exploitation areas and megacities. Currently there are various treatment methods to remediate soils and sediments contaminated with PAHs. However, it is necessary to provide a comprehensive overview of all the available remediation technologies up to date, so appropriate technologies can be selected to remediate PAHs pollution. In view of that, we analyzed the characteristics of the remediation mechanism, summarized the remediation methods for soil or sediments in coastal areas, which were physical repair, chemical oxidation, bioremediation and integrated approaches. Besides, this review also reported the development of new multi-functional green and sustainable systems, namely, micro-nano bubble (MNB), biochar, reversible surfactants and peracetic acid. While physical repair, expensive but efficient, was regarded as a suitable method for the PAHs remediation in coastal areas because of land shortage, integrated approaches would produce better results. The ultimate aim of the review was to ensure the successful restructuring of PAHs contaminated soil and sediments in coastal areas. Due to the environment heterogeneity, PAHs pollution in coastal areas remains as a daunting challenge. Therefore, new and suitable technologies are still needed to address the environmental issue.

Amphiphilic conjugates of ferrocene with amino acids and peptides: Design, synthesis, and studies on their aggregation behavior

A new class of ferrocenyl surfactants based on covalent linkage between amino acids or peptides and ferrocene was designed. Accordingly, five ferrocenyl amphiphiles, FcS1-5, were synthesized, and their aggregation behaviors in aqueous solutions were studied. Compared to the other surfactants containing ferrocenyl units, FcS have a relatively smaller size and low molecular weight and are easy to synthesize. The influences of the number of carboxylic acid head groups and the number of Fc group in the hydrophobic tail, on the stability and aggregation behavior of these amphiphiles in aqueous medium, were explored to deduce the structure property relationships. A combination of fluorescence and dynamic light scattering techniques was used to elucidate the behavior of these molecules. A good agreement between the results obtained using different techniques was observed.

ROMP Synthesis of Side-Chain Ferrocene-Containing Polyelectrolyte and Its Redox-Responsive Hydrogels Showing Dramatically Improved Swelling with β-Cyclodextrin

A new side-chain ferrocene (Fc)-containing polyelectrolyte has been synthesized by controlled ring-opening metathesis polymerization of a water-soluble Fc-containing norbornene-based quaternary ammonium salt, as well as the corresponding covalently cross-linked polyelectrolyte hydrogel. In order to provide Fc-containing supramolecular polyelectrolyte hydrogels whose swelling property is largely improved by host-guest interaction, a covalently cross-linked polyelectrolyte hydrogel is soaked into the β-CD aqueous solution to form β-CD@Fc supramolecular polyelectrolyte hydrogel, or alternatively the quaternary ammonium salt supramolecular monomer is first formed, then copolymerized with a crosslinking agent to fabricate the supramolecular hydrogel with better water absorption ability. All the Fc-containing hydrogels exhibited good redox-responsiveness with swelling-shrinking behaviors by chemically reversibly adjusting the disassembly/assembly of β-CD@Fc inclusion complexes. This is the first example of side-chain Fc-containing polycationic supramolecular hydrogels possessing swelling-shrinking properties based on the splitting/combining of β-CD and Fc units, and potential applications are expected as controlled drug delivery and actuators.

Let There be Light: Polymeric Micelles with Upper Critical Solution Temperature as Light-Triggered Heat Nanogenerators for Combating Drug-Resistant Cancer

Complete drug release and efficient drug retention are two critical factors in reversing drug resistance in cancer therapy. In this regard, polymeric micelles with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) are designed as a new exploration to reverse drug resistance. The amphiphilic UCST-type block copolymers are used to encapsulate photothermal agent IR780 and doxorubicin (DOX) simultaneously. The integrated UCST-type drug nanocarriers show light-triggered multiple synergistic effects to reverse drug resistance and are expected to kill three birds with one stone: First, owing to the photothermal effect of IR780, the nanocarriers will be dissociated upon exposure to laser irradiation, leading to complete drug release. Second, the photothermal effect-induced hyperthermia is expected to avoid the efflux of DOX and realize efficient drug retention. Last but not least, photothermal ablation of cancer cells can be achieved after laser irradiation. Therefore, the UCST-type drug nanocarriers provide a new strategy in reversing drug resistance in cancer therapy.

Organometallic, Nonclassical Surfactant with Gemini Design Comprising π-Conjugated Constituents Ready for Modification

Surfactants are functional molecules comprising a water-compatible head group and a hydrophobic tail. One of their features is the formation of self-assembled structures in contact with water, for instance, micelles, vesicles, or lyotropic liquid crystals. One way to increase the functionality of surfactants is to implement moieties containing transition-metal species. Ferrocene-based surfactants represent an excellent example because of the distinguished redox features. In most existing ferrocene-based amphiphiles, an alkyl chain is classically used as the hydrophobic tail. We report the synthesis and properties of 1-triisopropylsilylethynyl-1'-trimethylammoniummethylferrocene (FcNMe₃TIPS). In FcNMe₃TIPS, ferrocene is part of the head group (Gemini design) but is also attached to a (protected) π-conjugated ethynyl group. Although this architecture differs from that of classical amphiphiles and those of other ferrocene-based amphiphiles, the compound shows marked surfactant properties comparable to those of lipids, exhibiting a very low value of critical aggregation concentration in water (cac = 0.03 mM). It forms classical micelles only in a very narrow concentration range, which then convert into monolayer vesicles. Unlike classical surfactants, aggregates already form at a very low concentration, far beneath that required for the formation of a monolayer at the air-water interface. At even higher concentration, FcNMe₃TIPS forms lyotropic liquid crystals, not only in contact with water, but also in a variety of organic solvents. As an additional intriguing feature, FcNMe₃TIPS is amenable to a range of further modification reactions. The TIPS group is easily cleaved, and the resulting ethynyl function can be used to construct heterobimetallic platinum-ferrocene conjugates with trans-Pt(PEt₃)₂X (X = Cl, I) complex entities, leading to a heterobimetallic surfactant. We also found that the benzylic α-position of FcNMe₃TIPS is rather reactive and that the attached ammonium group can be exchanged by other substituents (e.g., -CN), which offers additional opportunities for further functionalization. Although FcNMe₃TIPS is reversibly oxidized in voltammetric and UV-vis spectroelectrochemical experiments, the high reactivity at the α-position is also responsible for the instability of the corresponding ferrocenium ion, leading to a polymerization reaction.

Electroactive Amphiphiles for Addressable Supramolecular Nanostructures

In this focus review we aim to highlight an exciting class of materials, electroactive amphiphiles (EAAs). This class of functional amphiphilic molecules has been the subject of sporadic investigations over the last few decades, but little attempt has been made to date to gather or organise these investigations into a logical fashion. Here we attempted to gather the most important contributions, provide a framework in which to discuss them, and, more importantly, point towards the areas where we believe these EAAs will contribute to solving wider scientific problems and open new opportunities. Our discussions cover materials based on low molecular weight ferrocenes, viologens and anilines, as well as examples of polymeric and supramolecular EAAs. With the advances of modern analytical techniques and new tools for modelling and understanding optoelectronic properties, we believe that this area of research is ready for further exploration and exploitation.

Impact of Glycolipid Hydrophobic Chain Length and Headgroup Size on Self-Assembly and Hydrophobic Guest Release

Encapsulation of a hydrophobic guest molecule inside a micelle and its stimuli-sensitive release is a useful strategy for target-specific drug delivery. Herein, nine biobased glycolipids were derived from plant sources. The influence of headgroup on the stability and aggregation pattern in water with different alkyl chain lengths was investigated to deduce the structure-property relationship. External factors, such as temperature, pH, and NaCl and urea concentrations, were employed to explore stimuli response of glycolipid nanoassemblies. Furthermore, solvatochromic dyes, such as pyrene, N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine, and curcumin, were utilized to examine hydrophobe loading capacities of these glycolipid assemblies. A fluorescence study was performed to investigate the enzyme-sensitive hydrophobe release. Interestingly, the pH-sensitive hydrophobic guests showed pH-responsive release from dynamic micelles. Finally, the synthesized glycolipids revealed their nanoassemblies as smart carriers for hydrophobic cargo.

Recent Trends in Metallopolymer Design: Redox-Controlled Surfaces, Porous Membranes, and Switchable Optical Materials Using Ferrocene-Containing Polymers

Metallopolymers with metal functionalities are a unique class of functional materials. Their redox-mediated optoelectronic and catalytic switching capabilities, their outstanding structure formation and separation capabilities have been reported recently. Within this Minireview, the scope and limitations of intriguing ferrocene-containing systems will be discussed. In the first section recent advances in metallopolymer design will be given leading to a plethora of novel metallopolymer architectures. Discussed synthetic pathways comprise controlled and living polymerization protocols as well as surface immobilization strategies. In the following sections, we focus on recent advances and new applications for side-chain and main-chain ferrocene-containing polymers as (i) remote-switchable materials, (ii) smart surfaces, (iii) redox-responsive membranes, and some recent trends in (iv) photonic structures and (v) other optical applications.

Acid-Labile Surfactants Based on Poly(ethylene glycol), Carbon Dioxide and Propylene Oxide: Miniemulsion Polymerization and Degradation Studies

Partially degradable, nonionic AB and ABA type di- and triblock copolymers based on poly(propylene carbonate) and poly(ethylene glycol) blocks were synthesized via immortal copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide, using mPEG or PEG as a macroinitiator, and (R,R)-(salcy)-CoOBzF₅ as a catalyst in a solvent-free one-pot procedure. The amphiphilic surfactants were prepared with molecular weights (M_n) between 2800 and 10,000 g·mol^-¹ with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.03⁻1.09). The copolymers were characterized using ¹H-, ¹³C- and DOSY-NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Surface-active properties were determined by surface tension measurements (critical micelle concentration, CMC; CMC range: 1⁻14 mg·mL^-¹). Degradation of the acid-labile polycarbonate blocks was investigated in aqueous solution using online ¹H-NMR spectroscopy and SEC. The amphiphilic polymers were used as surfactants in a direct miniemulsion polymerization for poly(styrene) (PS) nanoparticles with mean diameter of 270 to 940 nm. The usage of an acid-triggered precipitation of the emulsion simplified the separation of the particles from the surfactant and purification of the nanoparticles.
