Manipulating Single Microdroplets of NaCl Solutions: Solvent Dissolution, Microcrystallization, and Crystal Morphology

Tracking the Dissolution Surface Kinetics of a Single Fluorescent Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy

The understanding of the dissolution processes of solids is important for the design and synthesis of solids in a controlled and precise manner and for predicting their fate in the aquatic environment. We report herein single-particle-based confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) for tracking the dissolution surface kinetics of a single fluorescent cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (CD-MOF). As a proof of concept, CD-MOF containing fluorescein, named as CD-MOF⊃FL, was synthesized by encapsulating fluorescein into the interior of CD-MOF via a vapor diffusion method and used as a single-particle dissolution model because of its high FL efficiency and unique structure. The morphology of CD-MOF⊃FL and the distribution of fluorescein within CD-MOF⊃FL were characterized. The growth and dissolution processes of CD-MOF⊃FL at the single-particle level were visualized and quantified for the first time by recording the change of the fluorescence emission. Three processes, including nucleation, germination growth, and saturation stage, were found in the growth of CD-MOF⊃FL, and the growth kinetics followed Avrami's model. The dissolution rate at the face of a single CD-MOF⊃FL crystal was slower than that of its arris, and the dissolution rate of the CD-MOF⊃FL crystal was increased with the increase of the water amount in methanol solution. The dissolution process of the CD-MOF⊃FL crystal was a competitive process of erosion and diffusion in different methanol aqueous solutions, and the dissolution kinetics followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. These results offer new insights into the nature of dissolution kinetics of CD-MOF⊃FL and provide new venues for the quantitative analysis of solid dissolution and growth at the single-particle level.

Patterns during Evaporative Crystallization of a Saline Droplet

In the present work, we investigate the influence of substrate wettability and crystal morphology on the evaporative crystallization of saline droplets. On a superhydrophilic substrate, the evaporative crystals formed during the drying of a saline droplet of aqueous potassium nitrate are observed to be long and needle-shaped, oriented along the substrate. The crystal deposits form a flower-shaped pattern when the initial contact angle of the droplet increases to ∼72°. The orientation of the crystals along the triple contact line of the droplet controls the self-amplifying creeping growth of the salt crystals that eventually determines the overall evaporative patterns. The crystals change from being needle-shaped to globular salt deposits as the volume of liquid available for crystallization reduces. We demonstrate that the arrangement of the crystal with respect to the substrate and the droplet-air interface governs the rate of evaporation, growth, and morphology of the crystals.

Characterization of the Dissolution of Water Microdroplets in Oil

Water in oil emulsions have a wide range of applications from chemical technology to microfluidics, where the stability of water droplets is of paramount importance. Here, using an accessible and easily reproducible experimental setup we describe and characterize the dissolution of water in oil, which renders nanoliter-sized droplets unstable, resulting in their shrinkage and disappearance in a time scale of hours. This process has applicability in creating miniature reactors for crystallization. We test multiple oils and their combinations with surfactants exhibiting widely different rates of dissolution. We derived simple analytical equations to determine the product of the diffusion coefficient and the relative saturation density of water in oil from the measured dissolution data. By measuring the moisture content of mineral and silicone oils with Karl Fischer titration before and after saturating them with water, we calculated the diffusion coefficient of water in these two oils.

Crystal capillary origami capsule with self-assembled nanostructures

The self-assembling mechanism of elasto-capillaries opens new applications in micro and nanotechnology by providing 3D assembly structures with 2D planar unit cells, so-called capillary origami. To date, the final structure has been designed based on the predetermined shape and size of the unit cell. Here, we show that plate-like salt crystallites grow and cover the emulsion interface, which is driven by Laplace pressure. Eventually, it creates a spherical capsule with self-assembled nanostructures. The capsule and the crystallite are investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. To explain the mechanism, we develop a theoretical model to estimate the capsule size, the shell thickness, and the conditions necessary to form the shell based on a thin-walled pressure vessel. The proposed crystal capillary origami can fabricate a three-dimensional self-assembled salt capsule without any complicated procedures. We believe that it can offer a new physicochemical avenue for the spontaneous and facile fabrication of water-soluble carrier particles.

Dendrite Pattern Formation of Sodium Chloride Crystal

A variety of crystal structures is found in nature, not only equilibrium structures reflecting molecular structures, but also non-equilibrium structures which depend on the physicochemical conditions occurring during the crystal growth. In this paper, we focus on the dendrite structure of sodium chloride (NaCl) formed by the simple evaporation of an aqueous NaCl solution. The characteristics of the growth structures were measured as a function of the initial concentration of NaCl. In addition, the crystal growth process was measured using optical microscopy. As a result, the growth rate was not constant but was found to oscillate over time and synchronize with the wetting of the crystal. Our observations indicate that dendrite structures are more easily generated at higher initial concentrations. The detailed mechanism for dendrite pattern formation is still under investigation.

Micro-Surface and -Interfacial Tensions Measured Using the Micropipette Technique: Applications in Ultrasound-Microbubbles, Oil-Recovery, Lung-Surfactants, Nanoprecipitation, and Microfluidics

This review presents a series of measurements of the surface and interfacial tensions we have been able to make using the micropipette technique. These include: equilibrium tensions at the air-water surface and oil-water interface, as well as equilibrium and dynamic adsorption of water-soluble surfactants and water-insoluble and lipids. At its essence, the micropipette technique is one of capillary-action, glass-wetting, and applied pressure. A micropipette, as a parallel or tapered shaft, is mounted horizontally in a microchamber and viewed in an inverted microscope. When filled with air or oil, and inserted into an aqueous-filled chamber, the position of the surface or interface meniscus is controlled by applied micropipette pressure. The position and hence radius of curvature of the meniscus can be moved in a controlled fashion from dimensions associated with the capillary tip (~5–10 μm), to back down the micropipette that can taper out to 450 μm. All measurements are therefore actually made at the microscale. Following the Young–Laplace equation and geometry of the capillary, the surface or interfacial tension value is simply obtained from the radius of the meniscus in the tapered pipette and the applied pressure to keep it there. Motivated by Franklin’s early experiments that demonstrated molecularity and monolayer formation, we also give a brief potted-historical perspective that includes fundamental surfactancy driven by margarine, the first use of a micropipette to circuitously measure bilayer membrane tensions and free energies of formation, and its basis for revolutionising the study and applications of membrane ion-channels in Droplet Interface Bilayers. Finally, we give five examples of where our measurements have had an impact on applications in micro-surfaces and microfluidics, including gas microbubbles for ultrasound contrast; interfacial tensions for micro-oil droplets in oil recovery; surface tensions and tensions-in-the surface for natural and synthetic lung surfactants; interfacial tension in nanoprecipitation; and micro-surface tensions in microfluidics.
