Alkyl-Modified Gold Surfaces: Characterization of the Au-C Bond

Multipodal Au-C grafting of calix[4]arene molecules on gold nanorods

The interface robustness and spatial arrangement of functional molecules on metallic nanomaterials play a key part in the potential applications of functional nano-objects. The design of mechanically stable and electronically coupled attachments with the underlying metal is essential to bring specific desirable properties to the resulting hybrid materials. In this context, rigid multipodal platforms constitute a unique opportunity for the controllable grafting of functionality. Herein, we provide for the first time an in-depth description of the interface between gold nanorods and a chemically-grafted multipodal platform based on diazonium salts. Thanks to Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies and theoretical modeling, we deliver insights on the structural and electronic properties of the hybrid material. More importantly, it allows for the accurate assignment of Raman bands. The combination of experimental and theoretical results establishes the formation of four carbon-gold anchors for the calix[4]arene macrocycle leading to the exceptional stability of the functionalized nano-objects. Our results lay the foundations for the future design of robust and versatile platforms.

Robust Sub-5 Nanometer bis(Diarylcarbene)-Based Thin Film for Molecular Electronics and Plasmonics

In miniaturized electronic and optoelectronic circuits, molecular tunnel junctions have attracted enormous research interest due to their small footprint, low power consumption, and rich molecular functions. However, the most popular building blocks used in contemporary molecular tunnel junctions are thiol molecules, which attach to electrode surfaces via a metal-thiolate (MS) bond, showing low stability and usually quick degradation within several days. To pave the way for more widely applicable and stable molecular tunnel junctions, there is a need to develop new molecular anchoring groups. Here, this work demonstrates robust and air-stable molecular tunnel junctions with a sub-5 nanometer bis(diarylcarbene)-based thin film as the tunneling barrier, which anchors to the electrode surface via a AuC bond. The bis(diarylcarbene)-based molecular tunnel junctions exhibit high thermal stability against heating up to 200 °C and long storage lifetime over 5 months in an ambient environment. Both electrical and optical performance of these bis(diarylcarbene)-based molecular junctions are characterized systematically, showing similar behaviors to thiol-based junctions as well as largely improved emission stability. This research highlights the excellent performance of bis(diarylcarbene)-based molecular tunnel junctions, which could be useful for applications in molecular electronics and plasmonics.

Efficient Spin-Selective Electron Transport at Low Voltages of Thia-Bridged Triarylamine Hetero[4]helicenes Chemisorbed Monolayer

The Chirality Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect describes the capability of chiral molecules to act as spin filters discriminating flowing electrons according to their spin state. Within molecular spintronics, efforts are focused on developing chiral-molecule-based technologies to control the injection and coherence of spin-polarized currents. Herein, for this purpose, we study spin selectivity properties of a monolayer of a thioalkyl derivative of a thia-bridged triarylamine hetero[4]helicene chemisorbed on a gold surface. A stacked device assembled by embedding a monolayer of these molecules between ferromagnetic and diamagnetic electrodes exhibits asymmetric magnetoresistance with inversion of the signal according to the handedness of molecules, in line with the presence of the CISS effect. In addition, magnetically conductive atomic force microscopy reveals efficient electron spin filtering even at unusually low potentials. Our results demonstrate that thia[4]heterohelicenes represent key candidates for the development of chiral spintronic devices.

Unraveling the electronic influence and nature of covalent bonding of aryl and alkyl radicals on the B12N12 nanocage cluster

Carbon nanocage structures such as fullerene, nanotubes, nanocapsules, nanopolyhedra, cones, cubes, and onions have been reported since the discovery of C60, and they offer tremendous promise for investigating materials of low dimensions in an isolated environment. Boron Nitride (BN) nanomaterials such a: nanotubes, nanocapsules, nanoparticles, and clusters have been described in several studies and are predicted to be useful as electronic devices, high heat-resistance semiconductors, nanocables, insulator lubricants, and gas storage materials. The interaction, and electronic of octahedral B₁₂N₁₂ nanocage cluster covalently modified from the attachment of alkyl and aryl radicals were analyzed using Density Functional Theory calculations. The work discusses for the first time to our knowledge the complete investigation of the impact of the grafted aryl and alkyl groups on the electronic, bang gap, and density of states on the B₁₂N₁₂. Furthermore, this is the first complete description of these radicals attaching to a surface of B₁₂N₁₂ nanocage cluster.

Alkynyl ligands-induced growth of ultrathin nanowires arrays

Ligands are almost essential in the synthesis of nanostructures. In this work, we introduce the alkynyl ligands into the synthesis of ultrathin gold (Au) nanowires arrays. The strong binding affinity of the alkynyl ligands enables one-dimensional (1D) growth via the active surface growth mechanism. The scope of the ligand generality was systematically investigated, and the alkynyl ligand-induced nanowire growth processes were compared and contrasted with those involving thiolated ligands. While strong ligands are usually difficult to dissociate from the nanostructure surface and therefore problematic for post-synthetic processing, the alkynyl ligands are readily dissociable, making the alkynyl ligand-stabilized Au nanowires potentially more modifiable and applicable. As a demonstration, direct palladium (Pd) deposition on the Au nanowires was successfully carried out without any ligand exchange process.

Analytical determination of gold ions based on ranelate induced nanoparticle formation

A ranelate ion, an old antiosteoporotic drug, readily reacts with gold(III) ions generating stable gold nanoparticles (AuNP@Ran). The reaction proceeds rapidly under green conditions and is specific for gold ions at room temperature. Their characteristic color associated with the plasmonic resonance effects allows its use in colorimetric/spectrophotometric analysis, as well as in spot test assays. In addition to the color changes, the gold nanoparticles exhibit surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), providing another interesting route for the analytical detection of gold ions. Because of the great simplicity, the ranelate method can be very convenient for monitoring gold ions, especially in metal extraction and hydrometallurgical processes.

Modification of Cu(111) Surface with Alkylphosphonic Acids in Aqueous and Ethanol Solution—An Experimental and Theoretical Study

Alkylphosphonic acids are well known for their ability to form self-assembled monolayers on hydroxide surfaces. A crucial step to understanding fundamentally how these surfaces are created is the elucidation of the interaction process that leads to such interface creation. In this study, we employed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics to understand this process. The interaction with the Cu(111) surface of three different alkylphosphonic acids (hexyl-, octyl- and decylphosphonic acids) is evaluated in an aqueous acidic and in an ethanol solution by Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, while EIS measurements are used to put in evidence the impact of the layer made in ethanol on copper protection. Nyquist diagrams of copper samples modified with an alkylphosphonic monolayer showed a higher polarization resistance that mitigates the copper corrosion in an aqueous acid medium. The phase–frequency Bode plots had higher and broader phase maxima for a modified copper surface with phosphonic moieties, which confirmed the ability of this organic layer to prevent copper corrosion.

Oxygen Interactions with Covalently Grafted 2D Nanometric Carboxyphenyl Thin Films—An Experimental and DFT Study

Surface modification is a hot topic in electrochemistry and material sciences because it affects the way materials are used. In this paper, a method for covalently attaching carboxyphenyl (PhCOOH) groups to a gold electrode is presented. These groups were grafted onto the electrode surface electrochemically via reduction of aryldiazonium salt. The resulting grafted surface was characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV) before and after the functionalization procedure to validate the presence of the grafted layer. The grafting of PhCOOH groups was confirmed by analyzing electrode thickness and composition by ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the grafted layers provide a stable platform and resolved, for the first time, their interactions with oxygen.

Spectroscopic Evidence for a Covalent Sigma Au-C Bond on Au Surfaces Using 13C Isotope Labeling

The Au-C linkage has been demonstrated as a robust interface for coupling thin organic films on Au surfaces. However, the nature of the Au-C interaction remains elusive up to now. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was previously used to assign a band at 412 cm^-1 as a covalent sigma Au-C bond for films generated by spontaneous reduction of the 4-nitrobenzenediazonium salt on Au nanoparticles. However, this assignment is disputed based on our isotopic shift study. We now provide direct evidence for covalent Au-C bonds on the surface of Au nanoparticles using ¹³C cross-polarization/magic angle spinning solid-state NMR spectroscopy combined with isotope substitution. A ¹³C NMR shift at 165 ppm was identified as an aromatic carbon linked to the gold surface, while the shift at 148 ppm was attributed to C-C junctions in the arylated organic film. This demonstration of the covalent sigma Au-C bond fills the gap in metal-C bonds for organic films on surfaces, and it has great practical and theoretical significance in understanding and designing a molecular junction based on the Au-C bond.

A theoretical and experimental study of the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium ions using graphene oxide as an adsorbent

This study is focused on the adsorption of hexavalent chromium ions Cr(vi) using graphene oxide (GO). The GO was prepared by chemical oxidation (Hummers method) of graphite particles. The synthesized GO adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was used for the adsorption of Cr(vi) ions. The theoretical calculations based on density functional theory and Monte Carlo calculations were used to explore the preferable adsorption site, interaction type, and adsorption energy of GO toward the Cr(vi) ions. Moreover, the most stable adsorption sites were used to calculate and plot noncovalent interactions. The obtained results are important as they give molecular insights regarding the nature of the interaction between GO surface and the adsorbent Cr(vi) ions. The found adsorption energy of −143.80 kcal/mol is indicative of the high adsorptive tendency of this material. The adsorption capacity value of GO toward these ions is q = 240.361 mg/g.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Covalent Grafting of Triazole Layer onto the Gold Surface

Finding novel strategies for surface modification is of great interest in electrochemistry and material sciences. In this study, we present a strategy for modification of a gold electrode through covalent attachment of triazole (TA) groups. Triazole groups were electrochemically grafted at the surface of the electrode by a reduction of in situ generated triazolediazonium cations. The resulting grafted surface was characterized before and after the functionalization process by different electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) confirming the presence of the grafted layer. The grafting of TA on the electrode surface was confirmed using analysis of surface morphology (by atomic force microscopy), the thickness of the grafted layer (by ellipsometry) and its composition (by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations imply that the grafted triazole offers a stronger platform than the grafted aryl layers.

From Langmuir-Blodgett to Grafted Films

A locally organized monolayer film strongly attached to a gold surface is obtained by transfer of a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film of octadecylamine (ODA) or alcohol (ODOH) onto a Au surface and simultaneous oxidative electrografting of this film still in contact with the aqueous subphase. As opposed to LB films, these films resist ultrasonication; and unlike electrografted films, they are organized monolayers by construction. They are characterized by AFM (atomic force microscopy), water contact angle, ellipsometry, XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), IRRAS (infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy), and GIXD (grazing incidence X-ray diffraction).

Three-dimensional graphene nanoribbons as a framework for molecular assembly and local probe chemistry

Recent advances in state-of-the-art probe microscopy allow us to conduct single molecular chemistry via tip-induced reactions and direct imaging of the inner structure of the products. Here, we synthesize three-dimensional graphene nanoribbons by on-surface chemical reaction and take advantage of tip-induced assembly to demonstrate their capability as a playground for local probe chemistry. We show that the radical caused by tip-induced debromination can be reversibly terminated by either a bromine atom or a fullerene molecule. The experimental results combined with theoretical calculations pave the way for sequential reactions, particularly addition reactions, by a local probe at the single-molecule level decoupled from the surface.

Electrochemical modification of platinum and glassy carbon surfaces with pyridine layers and their use as complexing agents for copper (II) ions

The electrochemical grafting of the “in-situ” prepared diazopyridinium salt have permitted the attachment of pyridine moieties onto platinum and glassy carbon surfaces. The modification of the electrode surfaces is observed by a redox probe. The ability of the film for the complexation of copper (II) ions is demonstrated by square wave voltammetry. After 45 min accumulation of copper (II) ions onto the grafted electrode surfaces, the electrode signal obtained by square wave voltammetry measurement served to discriminate the adsorbed heavy metal ions. Such measurements showed that the grafted pyridine has the ability to display complexing behavior toward some heavy metal ions. DFT calculations support a strong binding of the pyridine moieties onto the Pt surface. The most favorable complexation mode of copper (II) ions as suggested from DFT is the bidentate complex. This strategy is vital in constructing a wide range of different electrochemical sensors.

The influence of the grafted aryl groups on the solvation properties of the graphyne and graphdiyne - a MD study

The mechanism of the adsorption and grafting of diazonium cations onto the surface of graphyne and graphdiyne was investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The adsorption energy (both in vacuum and water as solvent) of the phenyl diazonium cation was evaluated at three different positions of the graphyne and graphdiyne surface. Moreover, the lowest energy adsorption sites were used to calculate and plot Non-covalent Interactions (NCI). The Bond Dissociation Energy (BDE) results (up to 66 kcal/mol) for the scission of the phenyl group support the remarkable stability of the grafted layer. As both of these materials are non-dispersible in aqueous solution, in this work through the use of Molecular Mechanics (MM) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) we explored also the effect of the grafted substituted aryl groups derived from aryldiazonium salts onto the solvation properties of these materials.

Interactions between the Aryldiazonium Cations and Graphene Oxide: A DFT Study

Understanding the grafting behavior of the aryldiazonium cations is of fundamental and also of practical importance for the vast number of applications that involve the use of modified graphene oxide (from simple adsorption process to electronic and photovoltaic applications). In this work, the mechanism of the adsorption and grafting of diazonium cations on the graphene oxide surface was investigated by the use of density functional theory. Two types of aryldiazonium cations, one bearing only phenyl ring and the other nitrophenyl, were selected as adsorbates/grafted moiety. By evaluating the adsorption energies at 7 different positions onto the graphene oxide both in the gaseous and solvent phase (using COSMO approach), the most probable adsorption sites were found. Moreover, the most stable adsorption sites were used to calculate and plot NCI (noncovalent interactions). The obtained results are important as they not only give molecular insights regarding the nature of the interaction and its dependence on the adsorption site of the graphene oxide surface but also on the activation energy for such a grafting reaction to take place, providing a mechanistic aspect to understand these grafting reactions.
