Multicomponent Tandem Reactions and Polymerizations of Alkynes, Carbonyl Chlorides, and Thiols

One-pot multicomponent polymerization towards heterocyclic polymers: a mini review

Multicomponent polymerization (MCP) is an innovative field related to polymer-based chemistry that offers numerous advantages derived from multicomponent reactions (MCRs). One of the key advantages of MCP is its ability to achieve high efficiency. Additionally, MCP offers other advantages, including operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and atom economy. MCP is a versatile technique that is used for synthesizing a wide range of analogs from several classes of heterocyclic compounds. The ring structures of heterocyclic polymers give them different mechanical, photophysical, and electrical properties to other types of polymers. Because of their unique properties, heterocyclic polymers have been widely utilized in various significant applications. MCRs are a type of chemical reaction that can be used to synthesize a wide variety of compounds in a single pot, which allows researchers to quickly assemble libraries of compounds. The development of MCPs from MCRs has made it easier to access a library of polymers with tunable structures. However, MCPs related to alkynes or acetylene triple bonds have more potential. In this review study, we provide an overview of the synthesis of heteroatom-functional polymers and alkyne-based development or other reactions such as Cu-catalyzed, catalyst-free, MCCP, MCTPs, green monomers, A3 coupling reactions, Passerini reactions, and sequence- and controlled-multicomponent polymerization. The up-to-date progress provides a convenient and efficient kind of approach related to heteroatoms and MCP synthesis, and perspectives in terms of future directions are also discussed in the study.

Copolymerization Involving Sulfur-Containing Monomers

Incorporating sulfur (S) atoms into polymer main chains endows these materials with many attractive features, including a high refractive index, mechanical properties, electrochemical properties, and adhesive ability to heavy metal ions. The copolymerization involving S-containing monomers constitutes a facile method for effectively constructing S-containing polymers with diverse structures, readily tunable sequences, and topological structures. In this review, we describe the recent advances in the synthesis of S-containing polymers via copolymerization or multicomponent polymerization techniques concerning a variety of S-containing monomers, such as dithiols, carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, cyclic thioanhydrides, episulfides and elemental sulfur (S8). Particularly, significant focus is paid to precise control of the main-chain sequence, stereochemistry, and topological structure for achieving high-value applications.

A Fluorescent Linear Conjugated Polymer Constructed from Pillararene and Anthracene

Over the past few years, conjugated polymers (CPs) have aroused much attention owing to their rigid conjugated structures, which can perform well in light harvesting and energy transfer and offer great potential in materials chemistry. In this article, we fabricate a new luminescent linear CP p(P[5](OTf)₂-co-9,10-dea) via the Sonogashira coupling of 9,10-diethynylanthracene and trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (OTf) modified pillar[5]arene, generating enhanced yellow-green fluorescence emission at around 552 nm. The reaction condition was screened to get a deeper understanding of this polymerization approach, resulting in an excellent yield as high as 92% ultimately. Besides the optical properties, self-assembly behaviors of the CP in low/high concentrations were studied, where interesting adjustable morphologies from tube to sheet were observed. In addition, the fluorescence performance and structural architecture can be disturbed by the host–guest reorganization between the host CP and the guest adiponitrile, suggesting great potential of this CP material in the field of sensing and detection.

Click Nucleophilic Conjugate Additions to Activated Alkynes: Exploring Thiol-yne, Amino-yne, and Hydroxyl-yne Reactions from (Bio)Organic to Polymer Chemistry

The 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between activated alkynes or acetylenic Michael acceptors and nucleophiles (i.e., the nucleophilic Michael reaction) is a historically useful organic transformation. Despite its general utility, the efficiency and outcomes can vary widely and are often closely dependent upon specific reaction conditions. Nevertheless, with improvements in reaction design, including catalyst development and an expansion of the substrate scope to feature more electrophilic alkynes, many examples now present with features that are congruent with Click chemistry. Although several nucleophilic species can participate in these conjugate additions, ubiquitous nucleophiles such as thiols, amines, and alcohols are commonly employed and, consequently, among the most well developed. For many years, these conjugate additions were largely relegated to organic chemistry, but in the last few decades their use has expanded into other spheres such as bioorganic chemistry and polymer chemistry. Within these fields, they have been particularly useful for bioconjugation reactions and step-growth polymerizations, respectively, due to their excellent efficiency, orthogonality, and ambient reactivity. The reaction is expected to feature in increasingly divergent application settings as it continues to emerge as a Click reaction.

Room-Temperature Synthesis of a Hollow Microporous Organic Polymer Bearing Activated Alkyne IR Probes for Nonradical Thiol-yne Click-Based Post-Functionalization

This work shows that hollow microporous organic polymer (H-MOP-A) with activated internal alkynes as IR probes can be prepared by template synthesis based on acyl Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling at room temperature. The H-MOP-A is a versatile platform in the main chain PSM based on nonradical thiol-yne click reaction. Moreover, an IR peak of internal alkynes in the H-MOP-A is very intense and could be utilized in the monitoring of thiol-yne click-based main chain PSM. The functionalized H-MOP-A with carboxylic acids (H-MOP-CA) showed efficient adsorption toward Ag⁺ ions. The resultant H-MOP-CA-Ag showed excellent performance in the CO₂ fixation to α-alkylidene cyclic compounds.

Multicomponent Polymerization for π-Conjugated Polymers

Structurally complex π-conjugated polymers hold great promise as key components in sensor and electronic devices; however, their syntheses have not been a trivial task. From a synthetic efficiency perspective, it would be more attractive to access these materials using convenient and efficient methods from simple building blocks. One such synthetic tool, multicomponent polymerization, can accommodate modularity and provide highly efficient syntheses. This feature article outlines several multicomponent polymerization strategies for the synthesis of various π-conjugated polymers, which are classified based upon how the monomers are aligned during polymerization. Additionally, the challenges and outlooks of this field are highlighted and discussed.

One-Step Multicomponent Polymerizations for the Synthesis of Multifunctional AIE Polymers

As a new class of functional luminescent materials, polymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature attract much attention because of their advantages of efficient solid-state fluorescence, excellent processability, structural diversity, and multifunctionalities. Among all polymerization methods toward AIE polymers, multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) exhibit the merits of simple operation, good atom economy, high polymerization efficiency, broad functional-group tolerance, etc. In this feature article, the recent progress on the development of one-step MCPs for the synthesis of AIE polymers is highlighted. The representative functionalities of the resulting AIE polymers are illustrated. Perspectives on the challenges and future development directions of this field are also discussed.

Direct Construction of Acid-Responsive Poly(indolone)s through Multicomponent Tandem Polymerizations

Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) as a burgeoning field in polymer chemistry has proved to be a powerful and popular tool for the synthesis of functional polymer materials with diverse and complex structures. To explore the general applicability of MCPs and enrich the product structures of MCPs, multicomponent tandem polymerizations (MCTPs) with great synthetic simplicity and efficiency were pursued. In this work, MCTPs of N-(2-iodophenyl)-3-phenyl-N-tosylpropiolamide, aromatic terminal alkynes, and diamines were explored through combining Sonogashira coupling and Michael addition reaction in a one-pot procedure. The MCTPs could proceed efficiently and conveniently under mild conditions with Pd(PPh₃)₂Cl₂, CuI, and i-Pr₂NEt, affording 12 poly(indolone)s with unique structures and high M_ws (up to 30400 g/mol) in high yields (up to 97%). The poly(indolone)s possess a unique acid-triggered fluorescence "turn-on" response which could realize specific detection of CF₃SO₃H from other inorganic and organic acids through a rapid acid-catalyzed reaction from enamine to ketone.

Multicomponent Polymerizations of Alkynes, Sulfonyl Azides, and 2-Hydroxybenzonitrile/2-Aminobenzonitrile toward Multifunctional Iminocoumarin/Quinoline-Containing Poly(N-sulfonylimine)s

Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) provide a powerful synthetic tool for the construction of polymers with complex structures and multifunctionalities, owing to their great structural diversity, mild condition, high efficiency, simple procedure, and environmental benefit. They possess significant advantages in synthesizing heteroatom-rich or heterocycle-containing functional polymers through directly constructing fused heterocycles from the MCP. In this work, the MCPs of diynes, disulfonyl azides, and 2-hydroxybenzonitrile or 2-aminobenzonitrile were reported under the catalysis of CuCl and Et₃N, generating iminocoumarin/quinoline-containing poly(N-sulfonylimine)s with high molecular weights (up to 37700 g/mol) and high yields (up to 96%). The MCPs enjoy a wide monomer scope and high atom economy, releasing N₂ as the only byproduct. The fluorescent poly(N-sulfonylimine) can be utilized for sensitive and selective detection of Ru³⁺, which also possesses antibacterial properties. The efficient MCPs could produce polymers with unique structures and functionalities, thereby accelerating the development of polymer materials.

Independent Control of Elastomer Properties through Stereocontrolled Synthesis

In most synthetic elastomers, changing the physical properties by monomer choice also results in a change to the crystallinity of the material, which manifests through alteration of its mechanical performance. Using organocatalyzed stereospecific additions of thiols to activated alkynes, high‐molar‐mass elastomers were isolated via step‐growth polymerization. The resulting controllable double‐bond stereochemistry defines the crystallinity and the concomitant mechanical properties as well as enabling the synthesis of materials that retain their excellent mechanical properties through changing monomer composition. Using this approach to elastomer synthesis, further end group modification and toughening through vulcanization strategies are also possible. The organocatalytic control of stereochemistry opens the realm to a new and easily scalable class of elastomers that will have unique chemical handles for functionalization and post synthetic processing.

Functional Poly(dihalopentadiene)s: Stereoselective Synthesis, Aggregation-Enhanced Emission and Sensitive Detection of Explosives

The development of polymeric materials with novel structures and unique properties and functionalities is of both academic and industrial significance. In this work, functional poly(dihalopentadiene)s were synthesized by boron trihalide-mediated multicomponent polymerization routes in a stereoselective manner. The polymerizations of tetraphenylethylene-containing diyne, BX₃ (X = Cl, Br) and p-tolualdehyde proceed smoothly in dichloromethane under mild conditions to afford high molecular weight poly(dihalopentadiene)s with a predominant (Z,Z)-configuration in moderate to good yields. The reaction conditions and the boron trihalide used were found to have great effects on the stereochemistry of the resulting polymer structures. The obtained poly(1,5-dihalo-(Z,Z)-1,4-pentadiene)s possess high thermal stability and good film-forming ability. Their thin films show high refractive index of 1.9007⁻1.6462 in a wide wavelength region of 380⁻890 nm with low optical dispersion. The polymers are weakly emissive in dilute solutions but become highly emissive upon aggregated, demonstrating a unique phenomenon of aggregation-enhanced emission. Their nanoaggregates in aqueous media can serve as sensitive fluorescent chemosensors for the detection of explosives with a superamplification effect and a low detection limit.

Synthesis of Functional Poly(propargyl imine)s by Multicomponent Polymerizations of Bromoarenes, Isonitriles, and Alkynes

Here we reported a versatile and multicomponent polymerization (MCP) approach that enabled the synthesis of functional poly(propargyl imine)s with well-defined structures and high molecular weight (M_w up to 38 200) in excellent yields (up to 93%) from readily accessible monomers of dibromoarenes, isonitriles, and diynes. This MCP had the advantages of simple operation, wide substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions. The resulting polymers possessed good solubility and showed high thermal stability and refractive indices. The tetraphenylethene-containing polymer displayed a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission and could respond to various acidic vapors.

Metal-Free Multicomponent Tandem Polymerizations of Alkynes, Amines, and Formaldehyde toward Structure- and Sequence-Controlled Luminescent Polyheterocycles

Sequence-controlled polymers, including biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, have attracted much attention recently because of their sequence-dependent functionalities. The development of an efficient synthetic approach for non-natural sequence-controlled polymers is hence of great importance. Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) as a powerful and popular synthetic approach for functional polymers with great structural diversity have been demonstrated to be a promising tool for the synthesis of sequence-controlled polymers. In this work, we developed a facile metal-free one-pot multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCTP) of activated internal alkynes, aromatic diamines, and formaldehyde to successfully synthesize structural-regulated and sequence-controlled polyheterocycles with high molecular weights (up to 69 800 g/mol) in high yields (up to 99%). Through such MCTP, polymers with the in situ generated multisubstituted tetrahydropyrimidines or dihydropyrrolones in the backbone and inherent luminescence can be easily obtained with high atom economy and environmental benefit, which is inaccessible by other synthetic approaches.

Metal-Free, Multicomponent Synthesis of Pyrrole-Based π-Conjugated Polymers from Imines, Acid Chlorides, and Alkynes

Multicomponent coupling reactions (MCRs) are becoming increasingly used in the synthesis of macromolecules, as they can allow the rapid generation of libraries of materials as a method to tune properties. MCRs could prove particularly useful in the synthesis of π-conjugated polymers in which structural changes are necessary for fine-tuning of electronic properties. We describe here the first metal-free multicomponent approach to conjugated polymers. This reaction exploits the coupling of imines, acid chlorides, and (catechyl)PPh to generate phospha-münchnone-containing polymers, which can be converted to poly(pyrroles) via cycloaddition. The platform allows for the efficient synthesis of families of high molecular weight polymers in one step from readily available monomers.

Multicomponent syntheses of functional chromophores

Multicomponent reactions are a valuable tool for the synthesis of functional π-electron systems. Two different approaches can be taken into account for accessing the target structures. In the more conventional scaffold approach an already existing chromophore is coupled with other components to give a complex functional π-system. Here, electronically monotonous components can also be introduced, which may exert synergistic electronic effects within the novel compound. The more demanding chromophore concept generates a complete π-electron system and a scaffold concurrently. The latter approach is particularly stimulating for methodologists since π-systems might be accessible from simple starting materials. This review encompasses the advances in the preparation of functional π-electron systems via multicomponent processes during the past few years, based both on the scaffold and chromophore concepts. Besides the synthetic strategies the most important properties, i.e. redox potentials, absorption and emission maxima or fluorescence quantum yields, of the synthesized molecules are highlighted.
