Structure of the Interfacial Region in Adsorbed Poly(vinyl acetate) on Silica

Investigations of the adsorbed layer of polysulfone: Influence of the thickness of the adsorbed layer on the glass transition of thin films

This work studies the influence of the adsorbed layer on the glass transition of thin films of polysulfone. Therefore, the growth kinetics of the irreversibly adsorbed layer of polysulfone on silicon substrates was first investigated using the solvent leaching approach, and the thickness of the remaining layer was measured with atomic force microscopy. Annealing conditions before leaching were varied in temperature and time (0-336 h). The growth kinetics showed three distinct regions: a pre-growth step where it was assumed that phenyl rings align parallel to the substrate at the shortest annealing times, a linear growth region, and a crossover from linear to logarithmic growth observed at higher temperatures for the longest annealing times. No signs of desorption were observed, pointing to the formation of a strongly adsorbed layer. Second, the glass transition of thin polysulfone films was studied in dependence on the film thickness using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Three annealing conditions were compared: two with only a tightly bound layer formed in the linear growth regime and one with both tightly bound and loosely adsorbed layers formed in the logarithmic growth regime. The onset thickness and increase in the glass transition temperature increases with annealing time and temperature. These differences were attributed to the distinct conformations of the formed adsorbed layers.

Neutron Reflectivity Study on the Adsorption Layer of Polyethylene Grown on Si Substrate

To investigate the structure of the interface between polyethylene films and substrates, the neutron reflectivity (NR) of deuterated polyethylene (dPE) thin films deposited on Si substrates was measured, demonstrating water accumulation at the interface, even under ambient conditions. After leaching the thermally annealed dPE films in hot p-xylene, NR measurements were conducted on the layers remaining on the substrate, clearly revealing that the adsorption layer of dPE grew during annealing and consisted of two layers, an inner adsorption layer and an outer adsorption layer, as previously proposed for amorphous polymers. The inner adsorption layer was approximately 3.7 nm thick with a density comparable to that of the bulk. The outer adsorption layer was several nanometers thick and appeared to grow insufficiently on top of the inner adsorption layer under the annealing conditions examined in this study. This study clarifying the growth of the adsorption layer of polyethylene at the interface with an inorganic substrate is useful for improving the performance of polymer/inorganic filler nanocomposites due to the wide utility of crystalline polyolefins as polymer matrix materials in nanocomposites.

Synthesis, electrospinning, and molecular docking of poly(methyl methacrylate) Schiff bases and their applications as polymeric antimicrobial agents and for dye removal

The antibacterial activity of a variety of modified poly(methyl methacrylate) Schiff bases against common microbial infections and removal of methylene blue (MB) dye were screened. The Schiff bases were synthesized from the reaction of the modified (PMMA) with vanillin (PMMA)Van and cinnamaldehyde (PMMA)Cin. By using Fourier transformer infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the structures of the nanofibers of the synthesized Schiff bases were confirmed. The modified Kirky-Bauer method was used to screen the antibacterial activities of all the obtained materials against various bacterial species, including gram-positive bacterial (Bacillus subtilis (4k1p), Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli (7ab3), Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Inhibition zones against gram-positive bacteria ranged in diameter from 7 to 14 mm, whereas for the Gram-negative bacteria, the inhibition zones found to be ranged between 6 and 13 mm. With a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 8 mg/mL and a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 mg/mL, (PMMA)Van shown the greatest antibacterial activity. Lastly, molecular docking research was done to better understand the interactions between this series' targets and inhibitors for (PMMA)Van and (PMMA)Cin (4k1p and 7ab3). Molecular modeling of these surface-adsorbed polymers indicated that (PMMA)Van binds more strongly with Nitrogen than does (PMMA)Cin through extra hydrogen-bonding interactions. All the developed materials were evaluated for the removal of 0.1 g/L methylene blue dye (MB) from an aqueous solution. The elimination percentage of MB dye ranged from 26.67% by using 0.05 g powder of (PMMA)Cin to 85.63% by employing 0.05 g nanofibers of (PMMA)Van.

Neutron reflectivity study on the nanostructure of PMMA chains near substrate interfaces based on contrast variation accompanied with small molecule sorption

In the case of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films on a Si substrate, thermal annealing induces the formation of a layer of PMMA chains tightly adsorbed near the substrate interface, and the strongly adsorbed PMMA remains on the substrate, even after washing with toluene (hereinafter called adsorbed sample). Neutron reflectometry revealed that the concerned structure consists of three layers: an inner layer (tightly bound on the substrate), a middle layer (bulk-like), and an outer layer (surface) in the adsorbed sample. When an adsorbed sample was exposed to toluene vapor, it became clear that, between the solid adsorption layer (which does not swell) and bulk-like swollen layer, there was a "buffer layer" that could sorb more toluene molecules than the bulk-like layer. This buffer layer was found not only in the adsorbed sample but also in the standard spin-cast PMMA thin films on the substrate. When the polymer chains were firmly adsorbed and immobilized on the Si substrate, the freedom of the possible structure right next to the tightly bound layer was reduced, which restricted the relaxation of the conformation of the polymer chain strongly. The "buffer layer" was manifested by the sorption of toluene with different scattering length density contrasts.

Low Temperature, In Situ Polymerization of Vinyl Acetate in Silica Containing Emulsion Gels

Vinyl acetate (VAc) was polymerized to about 90% conversion in 9 h at 40°C from the colloidal microstructure of the VAc/fumed silica/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) system. The glass transition ( $T_g$ ) of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) polymerized in these emulsion gels with silica was higher ( $T_g={41}^{°}\text{C}$ ) than those of PVAc made from bulk polymerization at 60°C ( $T_g={31}^{°}\text{C}$ ) and the weight average molar mass ( $M_w$ ) was also larger ( $M_w$ about 300 kg/mol) than those from bulk polymerization ( $M_w=125\text{kg}/\text{mol}$ ). Increased $M_w$ , $T_g$ , and lowered processing temperature for these composites could facilitate new applications for PVAc.

Polymer Nanocomposite Dielectrics: Understanding the Matrix/Particle Interface

Polymer nanocomposite dielectrics possess exceptional electric properties that are absent in the pristine dielectric polymers. The matrix/particle interface in polymer nanocomposite dielectrics is suggested to play decisive roles on the bulk material performance. Herein, we present a critical overview of recent research advances and important insights in understanding the matrix/particle interfacial characteristics in polymer nanocomposite dielectrics. The primary experimental strategies and state-of-the-art characterization techniques for resolving the local property-structure correlation of the matrix/particle interface are dissected in depth, with a focus on the characterization capabilities of each strategy or technique that other approaches cannot compete with. Limitations to each of the experimental strategy are evaluated as well. In the last section of this Review, we summarize and compare the three experimental strategies from multiple aspects and point out their advantages and disadvantages, critical issues, and possible experimental schemes to be established. Finally, the authors' personal viewpoints regarding the challenges of the existing experimental strategies are presented, and potential directions for the interface study are proposed for future research.

Predicting Solute Diffusivity in Polymers Using Time-Temperature Superposition

We demonstrate a novel application of the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle to predict solute diffusivity D in glassy polymers using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Our TTS approach incorporates the Debye-Waller factor ⟨u²⟩, a measure of solute caging, along with concepts from thermodynamic scaling methods, allowing us to balance contributions to the dynamics from temperature and ⟨u²⟩ using adjustable parameters. Our approach rescales the solute mean-squared displacement curves at several temperatures into a master curve that approximates the diffusive dynamics at a reference temperature, effectively extending the simulation time scale from nanoseconds to seconds and beyond. With a set of "universal" parameters, this TTS approach predicts D with reasonable accuracy in a broad range of polymer/solute systems. Using TTS greatly reduces the computational cost compared to standard MD simulations. Thus, our method offers a means to rapidly and routinely provide order-of-magnitude estimates of D using simulations.

Infrared Linear Dichroism for the Analysis of Molecular Orientation in Polymers and in Polymer Composites

The mechanical properties of polymeric materials are strongly affected by molecular orientation occurring under processing conditions. Infrared dichroism is particularly well suited for characterizing polymer chain orientation at a molecular level. The usefulness of this technique has been demonstrated through various applications in homopolymers, semi-crystalline polymers, copolymers, polymer blends, as well as in polymer composites. Determination of molecular orientation can be carried out in the mid- and near-infrared ranges and very small dichroic effects can be detected with the use of a photoelastic modulator. Chain orientation in polymer composites is seen to increase with the filler content in the case of a strong interface between the two phases, making possible a quantification of the degree of bonding between the host polymeric matrix and the incorporated inclusions.

Direct Visualization of Interfacial Regions between Fillers and Matrix in Rubber Composites Observed by Atomic Force Microscopy-Based Nanomechanics Assisted by Electron Tomography

In order to explain or predict the macroscopic mechanical properties of polymer composites with complex nanostructures, atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanomechanics is one of the most appropriate tools because the local mechanical properties can be obtained by it. However, automatic force curve analysis based on contact mechanics would mislead us to the wrong conclusion. The purpose of this study is to elucidate this point by applying AFM nanomechanics on a carbon black (CB)-reinforced isoprene rubber (IR). The CB aggregates underneath the rubber surface prevent us from quantitatively evaluating the ratio of CB and interfacial polymer region (IPR), which is an important parameter to determine the macroscopic mechanical properties. In order to overcome this problem, transmission electron microtomography was incorporated to investigate the 3D structure in the same field of view as AFM nanomechanics. As a result, it was found that there are buried structures that do not appear in the AFM topographic image. In addition, we were able to reveal the existence of a force curve with an inflection point, which is characteristic of such "false" IPRs. To put it another way, we evidenced the existence of true IPRs for the first time by combining these state-of-the-art techniques.

Investigation of Interfacial Water Accumulation between Polypropylene Thin Film and Si Substrate by Neutron Reflectivity

We performed neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements of isotactic polypropylene (PP) thin films deposited on a Si substrate at the saturated vapor pressure of deuterated water to investigate interfacial water accumulation between the PP and metal surfaces in PP-based polymer/inorganic filler nanocomposites and metal/resin bonding materials. The PP thin films prepared on a Si substrate by a spin-coating technique were adequate as a model system for the PP/metal interface in these materials. A water-rich layer with a maximum water concentration of 0.5, which was considerably higher than those reported in previous studies of organic/inorganic interfaces, was observed within a width of approximately 3 nm at the interface under saturated vapor conditions. This could be attributed to the weak interaction between the PP thin film and the Si substrate. The pathway of moisture transport to the interfacial region was along the interface rather than through the PP film because the hydrophobic PP thin film does not entirely swell with water vapor.

In Situ Neutron Reflectometry Analysis of Interfacial Structure Formation between Phenolic Resin and Silica during Curing

The structural formation mechanism of phenolic resin-silica interfaces was investigated in situ by neutron reflectometry during curing. There was a 4 nm thick novolac resin adsorption layer on the silica surface before curing. The curing reaction of the novolac resin with hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) increased the coherent neutron scattering length density of the resin due to the cure shrinkage accompanied by the volatilization of ammonia, which is a byproduct of HMTA decomposition. As curing proceeded at 180 °C, the thickness of the bulk layer increased despite the cure shrinkage, and the thickness of the interfacial layer decreased from 4 to 1 nm. This is attributed to the diffusion of decomposed HMTA fragments generated in the bulk layer into the interfacial novolac adsorption layer during diffusion throughout the bulk layer, incorporating the upper part of the interfacial layer reacting with the fragment into the bulk layer. On the other hand, the fragments could not diffuse into the tightly bound immobile segments of novolac resin in direct contact with the silica surface, retaining the 1-2 nm thick interfacial layer in the cured resin. This structural formation mechanism caused interfacial cross-link inhomogeneity in the cured resin on the silica surface.

Layered Structure in the Crystalline Adsorption Layer and the Leaching Process of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Revealed by Neutron Reflectivity

We investigated the structure of the crystalline adsorption layer of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in hot water by neutron reflectivity in two cases: when the adsorption layer is exposed on the substrate by leaching the upper bulk layer and when it is deeply embedded between a relatively thick PVA film and substrate. In both cases, the PVA adsorption layer consists of three layers on the Si substrate. The bottom layer, consisting of amorphous chains that are strongly constrained on the substrate, is not swollen even in hot water at 90 °C. The middle layer, consisting of amorphous chains that are much more mobile compared with those in the bottom layer, has no freedom to assume a crystalline form. Only the molecular chains in the top layer are crystallizable in the adsorption layer, leading to a heterogeneous layered structure in the film thickness direction. This layered structure is attributed to the crystallizable chains of PVA during the formation of the adsorption layer driven by hydrogen bonding. However, the structure and dynamics in the adsorption layer may differ in both cases because the molecular chains in the vicinity of the surface seem to be affected by surface effects even in the adsorption layer.

Preparation of Well-Exfoliated Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/α-Zirconium Phosphate Nanocomposites

Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (PEVAc) nanocomposites containing exfoliated α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) have been prepared using a simple solution mixing method to improve their barrier and mechanical properties. ZrP was pre-exfoliated with a surfactant, followed by additional targeted surface functionalization and surfactant exchange to allow for hydrogen bonding of ZrP with the acetate functionality on PEVAc and to improve ZrP surface hydrophobicity. The solvent is found to play an important role in stabilizing ZrP exfoliation in the presence of PEVAc to retain full exfoliation and homogeneous dispersion upon the removal of the solvent. The PEVAc/ZrP nanocomposite exhibits greatly improved oxygen barrier, melt strength, and mechanical properties. The usefulness of the present study for the preparation of olefinic polymer nanocomposites is discussed.

Efficient Hybrid Particle-Field Coarse-Grained Model of Polymer Filler Interactions: Multiscale Hierarchical Structure of Carbon Black Particles in Contact with Polyethylene

In the present study, we propose, validate, and give first applications for large-scale systems of coarse-grained models suitable for filler/polymer interfaces based on carbon black (CB) and polyethylene (PE). The computational efficiency of the proposed approach, based on hybrid particle-field models (hPF), allows large-scale simulations of CB primary particles of realistic size (∼20 nm) embedded in PE melts. The molecular detailed models, here introduced, allow a microscopic description of the bound layer, through the analysis of the conformational behavior of PE chains adsorbed on different surface sites of CB primary particles, where the conformational behavior of adsorbed chains is different from models based on flat infinite surfaces. On the basis of the features of the systems, an optimized version of OCCAM code for large-scale (up to more than 8 million of beads) parallel runs is proposed and benchmarked. The computational efficiency of the proposed approach opens the possibility of a computational screening of the bound layer, involving the optimal combination of surface chemistry, size, and shape of CB aggregates and the molecular weight distribution of the polymers achieving an important tool to address the polymer/fillers interface and interphase engineering in the polymer industry.

Interfacial Dynamics in Supported Ultrathin Polymer Films-From the Solid to the Free Interface

Molecular dynamics in ultrathin layers is investigated using nanostructured electrodes to perform broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurements, and by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Using poly(vinyl acetate) as the model system and taking advantage of access to the distribution of relaxation times in an extended temperature range above the glass transition temperature, T_g, we demonstrate that while the mean rates of the segmental relaxation remain bulklike down to 12 nm film thickness, modified molecular mobilities arise in the interfacial zones. Combining results from simulations and experiments, we show unambiguously that both the slow relaxations arising from adsorbed polymer segments and the faster modes attributed to segments in the vicinity of the free interface have non-Arrhenius temperature activation. These interfacial regions span thicknesses of ∼1.5 nm each just above the calorimetric T_g independent of molecular weight and film thickness. These deviations at interfaces are relevant for applications of polymers in adhesion, coatings, and polymer nanocomposites.

Neutron Reflectivity on the Mobile Surface and Immobile Interfacial Layers in the Poly(vinyl acetate) Adsorption Layer on a Si Substrate with Deuterated Toluene Vapor-Induced Swelling

We investigated the polymer chain dynamics in a 2-3 nm thick poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) adsorption layer on a Si substrate with a native oxide layer via neutron reflectometry combined with toluene vapor-induced swelling. We can investigate the polymer chain dynamics difference in the film thickness direction by the difference in the degree of swelling of the polymer layers detected by neutron reflectometry. The mobility of the polymer chains depends on the distance from the substrate. The results elucidated that the interfacial layer with a thickness of approximately 1 nm did not swell at all with toluene vapor, which is a solvent for PVAc. Meanwhile, the surface layer excessively swells with toluene vapor compared to the bulk. This indicates that the polymer chain within the interfacial region is immobilized by the substrate through hydrogen-bonding interaction, but in the surface region, the surface effect overcomes this interfacial interaction. We concluded that the polymer chains in the adsorption layer are either strongly constrained to the substrate, owing to hydrogen bonding, or more mobile than the bulk, owing to the surface effect.

Effect of Poly(vinyl butyral) Comonomer Sequence on Adhesion to Amorphous Silica: A Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics Study

Modulating a comonomer sequence, in addition to the overall chemical composition, is the key to unlocking the true potential of many existing commercial copolymers. We employ coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the behavior of random-blocky poly(vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol) (PVB) melts in contact with an amorphous silica surface, representing the interface found in laminated safety glass. Our two-pronged coarse-graining approach utilizes both macroscopic thermophysical data and all-atom MD simulation data. Polymer-polymer nonbonded interactions are described by the fused-sphere SAFT-γ Mie equation of state, while bonded interactions are derived using Boltzmann inversion to match the bond and angle distributions from all-atom PVB chains. Spatially dependent polymer-surface interactions are mapped from a hydroxylated all-atom amorphous silica slab model and all-atom monomers to an external potential acting on the coarse-grained sites. We discovered an unexpected complex relationship between the blockiness parameter and the adhesion energy. The adhesion strength between PVB copolymers with intermediate VA content and silica was found to be maximal for random-blocky copolymers with a moderately high degree of blockiness rather than for diblock copolymers. We attribute this to two main factors: (1) changes in morphology, which dramatically alter the number of VA beads interacting with the surface and (2) a non-negligible contribution of vinyl butyral (VB) monomers to adhesion energy because of their preference to adsorb to zones with low hydroxyl density on the silica surface.

Role of Interface Structure and Chain Dynamics on the Diverging Glass Transition Behavior of SSBR-SiO2-PIL Elastomers

Intermolecular interactions between the constituents of a polymer nanocomposite at the polymer-particle interface strongly affect the segmental mobility of polymer chains, correlated with their glass transition behavior, and are responsible for the improved dynamical viscoelastic properties. In this work, we emphasized on the evolution of characteristic interfaces and their dynamics in silica (SiO2 NP)-reinforced, solution-polymerized, styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) composites, whose relative prevalence varied with the phosphonium ionic liquid (PIL) volume fraction, used as an interfacial modifier. The molecular origins of such interfaces were examined through systematic dielectric spectroscopy, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and dynamic-mechanical analyses. The PIL facilitated H-bonding, cation-π, surface-phenyl, and van der Waals interfacial interactions between SSBR and SiO2 NP, thereby regulating the polymer chain dynamics, orientation, and mean-square displacement. Specifically, the mass density profiles from MD simulations revealed the dynamic gradient of polymer chains in the interfacial region as a function of radial distance from the center of mass of the SiO2 NP surface. The results showed a structuring effect to result in well-resolved density peaks at specific radial distances with the tangential orientation of styrene monomers in the vicinity of the SiO2 NP surface. These domino effects highlighted strong interfacial interactions to have an indispensable effect on the viscoelastic performance and thermal motion of SSBR molecular chains, leading to a higher glass transition temperature (T g) by ∼15 K, validating the experimental data. More importantly, our results gave new insights into the fundamental understanding of the fact that the strength of intermolecular interactions induced by PIL at the polymer-particle interface is the key to control the α-relaxation dynamics and T g optimization, desired for specific applications.

The interfacial structure and dynamics in a polymer nanocomposite containing small attractive nanoparticles: a full atomistic molecular dynamics simulation study

We study the interfacial structure and dynamics of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC) composed of octaaminophenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OAPS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) by performing full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. There are eight aminophenyl groups grafted on the surface of the OAPS particle and the particle has a size comparable to the Kuhn segment of P2VP. These aminophenyl groups can form hydrogen bonds (HBs) with pyridine rings from surrounding P2VP chains. We found that OAPS can form ∼2 HBs on average with surrounding polymer chains. The effect of the HBs is investigated in detail by either switching on or off these HBs in our simulation. By analyzing the interfacial static packing structure and dynamic properties, we demonstrate that the system has an ∼1 nm interface width, similar to the OAPS particle size. We also found that HBs can prevent the further penetration of polymers into the inner zone (grafting layer) of the OAPS, and therefore keep the P2VP chains in the outer layer (>1 nm), remaining bulk-like, which is well consistent with experimental results. In addition, we found that NP diffusion is coupled to the absorbed polymer chains, which also dramatically slows down the diffusion of polymer segments in return. The core-shell model in which the NP and absorbed polymers diffuse as a single object is validated here at the full atomistic level. These results provide atomistic insights into the unique structure and dynamics in the small attractive NP-polymer interfacial region. We hope these results will be helpful for the understanding of peculiar phenomena in attractive polymer nanocomposites containing small NPs.

Tg Confinement Effect of Random Copolymers of 4-tert-Butylstyrene and 4-Acetoxystyrene with Different Compositions

We observe that the T_g confinement effect of polymer films can saturate with polymer-substrate interaction. Thickness dependences of the glass transition temperature, T_g(h₀), of random copolymer films of 4-tert-butylstyrene (TBS) and 4-acetoxystyrene (AS) supported by silica (SiOx) were measured for different TBS concentrations, X_TBS. For 0 ≤ X_TBS ≤ 0.47, T_g(h₀) displays identical enhancements, independent of X_TBS. For X_TBS > ∼0.66; however, T_g(h₀) decreases steadily with X_TBS. The X_TBS > 0.66 result is in keeping with expectations that TBS interacts less strongly with SiOx than AS does, and weaker polymer-substrate interaction renders greater dominance of the air surface over substrate surface on T_g, and thereby T_g reduction. We propose that saturation in T_g(h₀) found for X_TBS ≤ 0.47 is caused by the maximization in polymer-substrate-specific bond formation. Further experiments and a calculation support this proposition.

Tightly Bound PMMA on Silica Has Reduced Heat Capacities

The heat capacities of very small adsorbed amounts of poly(methyl methacrylate) on high-surface-area silica (Cab-O-Sil) were measured using temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) using a quasi-isothermal method and interpreted via different models. The composition-dependent heat capacities of the adsorbed samples were measurably less than those predicted with a simple mixture model. A two-state model, composed of tightly and loosely bound polymer, fits the data better with heat capacities of the tightly bound polymer found to be 70-80% (glassy region) and 70-94% (rubbery region) of that of the bulk polymer at the same temperatures. The amount of tightly bound polymer was estimated to be about 1.2 mg/m² (about 1 nm thickness) in both the glassy and rubbery regions, consistent with heat flow measurements. The data sets were also extensive enough to model them with a more detailed layered gradient model, including a nonzero heat capacity for the polymer at zero adsorbed amount, which increased based on an exponential growth function to bulk polymer value of the heat capacity away from the surface. More importantly, this gradient model mimicked the experimental dependence on adsorbed amounts in the tightly bound adsorbed amount region (approximately 1 mg/m²). This model provided, for the first time, an experimental estimate of the heat capacity of the polymer adsorbed closest to the surface. The fractional heat capacity of the adsorbed polymer closest to the silica surface, relative to bulk polymer, increased with temperature from 0.3 (well below) to 0.8 (well above the bulk T_g). It was also possible to estimate the exponential growth parameter of the development from the initial heat capacities to the bulk heat capacity as 0.4 to 0.6 mg/m², identifying a distance scale (0.3 to 0.5 nm) consistent with the notion of a transition from tightly bound to loosely bound polymer.

Dynamics Gradient of Polymer Chains near a Solid Interface

The relaxation dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) chains at the SiO₂ interface were directly probed as a function of distance from the SiO₂ surface using time-resolved evanescent wave-induced fluorescence anisotropy, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, and sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. We found the presence of the dynamics gradient of chains in the interfacial region with the SiO₂ surface and tried to assign it to the two kinds of adsorbed chains, namely, loosely and strongly adsorbed, at the interface. The segmental relaxation of chains in the strongly adsorbed layer at the interface could be slower than that of bulk chains by more than 10 orders.

Nanoscale Particle Motion Reveals Polymer Mobility Gradient in Nanocomposites

Polymer mobility near nanoparticle surfaces has been extensively discussed; however, direct experimental observation in the nanocomposite melts has been a difficult task. Here, by taking advantage of large dynamical asymmetry between the miscible matrix and surface-bound polymers, we highlighted their interphases and studied the resulting effect on the nanoparticle relaxation using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. The local mobility gradient is signified by an unprecedented increase in the relaxation time at length scales on the order of polymer radius of gyration. The effect is accompanied by a transition from simple diffusive to subdiffusive behavior in accord with viscous and entangled dynamics of polymers in the matrix and in the interphase, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the nanoparticle-induced polymer mobility changes in the interphases of nanocomposite melts can be extracted from the length-scale-dependent slow particle motion.

Cu nanoparticles constrain segmental dynamics of cross-linked polyethers: a trade-off between non-fouling and antibacterial properties

Copper has a strong bactericidal effect against multi-drug resistant pathogens and polyethers are known for their resistance to biofilm formation. Herein, we combined Cu nanoparticles (NPs) and a polyether plasma polymer in the form of nanocomposite thin films and studied whether both effects can be coupled. Cu NPs were produced by magnetron sputtering via the aggregation in a cool buffer gas whereas polyether layers were synthesized by Plasma-Assisted Vapor Phase Deposition with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) used as a precursor. In situ specific heat spectroscopy and XPS analysis revealed the formation of a modified polymer layer around the NPs which propagates on the scale of a few nanometers from the Cu NP/polymer interface and then transforms into a bulk polymer phase. The chemical composition of the modified layer is found to be ether-deficient due to the catalytic influence of copper whereas the bulk polymer phase exhibits the chemical composition close to the original PEO. Two cooperative glass transition phenomena are revealed that belong to the modified polymer layer and the bulk phase. The former is characterized by constrained mobility of polymer segments which manifests itself via a 30 K increase of dynamic glass transition temperature. Furthermore, the modified layer is characterized by the heterogeneous structure which results in higher fragility of this layer as compared to the bulk phase. The Cu NPs/polyether thin films exhibit reduced protein adsorption; however, the constrained segmental dynamics leads to the deterioration of the non-fouling properties for ultra-thin polyether coatings. The films are found to have a bactericidal effect against multi-drug resistant Gram-positive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Natural rubber-SiO2 nanohybrids: interface structures and dynamics

Homogeneous dispersion of silica nanoparticles (SiO₂ NPs) in natural rubber (NR) is a key challenge for engineering high-performance nanocomposites and elucidation of their structure on a molecular basis. Towards this, the present work devised a novel route for obtaining 3D self-assembled SiO₂ NP-NR nanocomposites under aqueous conditions and in the presence of Mg²⁺, by establishing a molecular bridge that clamped the negatively charged NR and SiO₂ colloidal particles with a favoured NR-SiO₂ NP hetero-aggregation. The characteristic NR-SiO₂ NP hetero-aggregates displayed a decreased heat capacity with increase in the SiO₂ mass-fraction, implying a restricted NR chain mobility. Such changes in the interfacial layers were tapped by ²⁹Si NMR, DFT calculations and molecular dynamics simulations towards a mechanistic understanding of the structure and dynamics of the NR/SiO₂ NP hybrid. Simple models were used to illustrate basic ideas; specific electrostatic interactions such as ion-dipole and H-bonding interactions proved to be the driving forces for the organized assembly leading to the NR-SiO₂ hetero-aggregate over the NR-NR or SiO₂ NP-SiO₂ NP homo-aggregate. Molecular dynamics simulation of the aqueous canonical ensemble of the hybrid showed the stable molecular conformation to reveal a SiO₂ NP spherical core encapsulated by a hydrophobically interconnected NR polymer layer as the outer shell, as a unique structural model. Specifically, the lipid end of the NR was involved electrostatically while the lysine end (the protein part of NR) H-bonded to the core silica cluster thereby restricting random aggregation. The calculated negative free energy changes for the hetero-aggregate composites via their vibrational and rotational spectra proved the spontaneity of composite formation.

Glass-Transition Dynamics of Mixtures of Linear Poly(vinyl methyl ether) with Single-Chain Polymer Nanoparticles: Evidence of a New Type of Nanocomposite Materials

Single-chain polymer nanoparticles (SCNPs) obtained through chain collapse by intramolecular cross-linking are attracting increasing interest as components of all-polymer nanocomposites, among other applications. We present a dielectric relaxation study on the dynamics of mixtures of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and polystyrene (PS)-based SCNPs with various compositions. Analogous dielectric measurements on a miscible blend of PVME with the linear precursor chains of the SCNPs are taken as reference for this study. Both systems present completely different behaviors: While the blend with the linear precursor presents dynamics very similar to that reported for PVME/PS miscible blends, in the PVME/SCNP mixtures there are an appreciable amount of PVME segments that are barely affected by the presence of SCNPs, which nearly vanishes only for mixtures with high SCNP content. Interestingly, in the frame of a simple two-phase system, our findings point towards the existence of a SCNP-rich phase with a constant PVME fraction, regardless of the overall concentration of the mixture. Moreover, the dynamics of the PVME segments in this SCNP-rich phase display an extreme dynamic heterogeneity, a signature of constraint effects.

Role of Wood Fibers in Tuning Dynamic Rheology, Non-Isothermal Crystallization, and Microcellular Structure of Polypropylene Foams

Microcellular polypropylene (PP)/wood fiber composite foams were fabricated via batch foaming assisted by supercritical CO₂ (scCO₂). Effects of wood fibers on rheology, crystallization, and foaming behaviors of PP were comprehensively investigated. The obtained results showed that the incorporation of wood fibers increased the complex viscosity and the storage modulus of the PP matrix. Jeziorny's model for non-isothermal crystallization kinetics indicated that wood fibers did not change the crystal growth. However, the crystallization rate of the PP matrix was decreased to a certain extent with increasing wood fiber loadings. The wood fiber exerts a noticeable role in improving the cell density and reducing the cell size, despite decreasing the expansion ratio. Interestingly, a "small-sized cells to large-sized cells" gradient cell structure was found around the wood fibers, implying cell nucleation was induced at the interface between wood fiber and PP matrix. When wood fiber loadings were specifically increased, a desirable microcellular structure was obtained. However, further increasing the wood fiber loadings deteriorated the cell structure. Moreover, the crystallinity of the composite foams initially decreased and then slightly increased with increasing wood fiber loadings, while the crystal size decreased.

Influence of molecular weight on molecular dynamics and dynamic rheology of polypropylene glycol filled with silica

Molecular weight strongly influences the molecular dynamics and rheological responses of nanocomposites, which is far from being well understood. Herein molecular dynamics and rheological behaviors of hydrophilic fumed silica filled unentangled polypropylene glycol (PPG) were investigated as a function of weight averaged molecular weight (M w) of PPG and volume fraction (∅) of silica. It is shown that M w does not affect the glassy layers surrounding the nanoparticles and the segmental dynamics of the mobile PPG phase. On the other hand, the mobile PPG phase in the highly filled nanocomposites exhibits an abnormal "more fragile" to "stronger" transition with increasing M w. The reinforcement and thinning behaviors are stronger in lower-M w nanocomposites with the "more fragile" mobile PPG phase. The results suggest that reinforcement of nanocomposites affects the dynamic fragility of the mobile phase of the matrix.

Effect of copolymer sequence on structure and relaxation times near a nanoparticle surface

We simulate a simple nanocomposite consisting of a single spherical nanoparticle surrounded by coarse-grained polymer chains. The polymers are composed of two different monomer types that differ only in their interaction strengths with the nanoparticle. We examine the effect of adjusting copolymer sequence on the structure as well as the end-to-end vector autocorrelation, bond vector autocorrelation, and self-intermediate scattering function relaxation times as a function of distance from the nanoparticle surface. We show how the range and magnitude of the interphase of slowed dynamics surrounding the nanoparticle depend strongly on sequence blockiness. We find that, depending on block length, blocky copolymers can have faster or slower dynamics than a random copolymer. Certain blocky copolymer sequences lead to relaxation times near the nanoparticle surface that are slower than those of either homopolymer system. Thus, tuning copolymer sequence could allow for significant control over the nanocomposite behavior.

Dynamic glass transition of the rigid amorphous fraction in polyurethane-urea/SiO2 nanocomposites

We report molecular dynamics in the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) of the polymer bound at the interfaces with nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites and calculate the glass transition temperature, T_g, for this bound layer of polymer. We follow the '3-phase-model' for semicrystalline polymers where the polymer matrix consists of the crystalline fraction (CF), the mobile amorphous fraction (MAF) and the RAF. While the amorphous polymer bound by crystallites is completely rigid, neither contributing to the glass transition, nor displaying molecular dynamics, the amorphous polymer bound at the interfaces with filler displays decelerated dynamics, as compared to the bulk polymer. Reports in the literature suggest a discrepancy between T_g values obtained by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and by Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy (DRS). As a plausible explanation we suggest that DRS results in T_g values taking into account the bound polymer, whereas DSC does not. For this investigation we use semicrystalline polyurethane-urea/SiO₂ nanocomposites and employ, next to DSC and DRS, SEM, SAXS and WAXS for morphological characterization. It is our intention to use DRS as a tool for investigating the RAF.

Cluster size distribution of spherical nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites: rheological quantification and evidence of phase separation

Currently, it is a great challenge to characterize the dispersion quality of nanoparticles in nanocomposites through experimental techniques. In this work, we suggest a new rheological method based on the strain rate amplification effect to determine the cluster size distribution in polymer nanocomposites. The dispersion exponents of nanoparticles from this rheological method are in good agreement with the cluster analysis of transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. We also obtain a critical value of the dispersion exponent from the effective specific surface area of clusters, which separates the well-dispersed state and the phase-separated state. Our results indicate that rheology can be used as a convenient and effective structural analysis method to characterize the nanoparticle cluster size distribution in polymer nanocomposites.

NANOMECHANICS OF THE RUBBER–FILLER INTERFACE

Atomic force microscope (AFM)–based nanomechanics is one of the most promising tools for accessing the rubber–filler interface while providing not only structural information but also mechanical–property evaluation. An AFM-based static modulus map is used to close in on the understanding of the filler reinforcement effect. As an example, a famous Guth–Gold equation is verified by comparing tensile testing and AFM. Two different novel methods are also introduced to visualize viscoelastic quantities such as storage and loss moduli, loss tangent, relaxation modulus, and viscosity. The difference in segmental dynamics between a rubber matrix and an interfacial region will be reviewed.
