Phase Transition from Tetragonal Form II to Hexagonal Form I of Butene-1/4-Methyl-1-pentene Random Copolymers: Molecular Factor versus Stretching Stimuli

Dramatically Accelerating II-I Crystal Phase Transition of Polybutene‑1 by In Situ Incorporation of H-Shape Long-Chain-Branching Structures

This communication reports an effective strategy helping address the long-troubling melt processing issue of isotactic polybutene-1 (i-PB) caused by its extremely slow II-I crystal phase transition. The solution lies in a facile synthesis of i-PB containing H-shape long-chain-branching structures (LCB-i-PB) by applying a so-called ω-alkenylmethyldichlorosilane copolymerization-hydrolysis (ACH) chemistry to butene-1 polymerization with Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts. It is evident that the H-shape LCB structures effectively enhance chain entanglements of i-PB and induce an over-the-board acceleration of the overall melt crystallization process including nucleation, form II crystallization, and form II-form I phase transition. As i-PB usually requires up to a week to reach equilibrium of the II-I phase transition, it is found that with LCB-i-PB such a transition is almost finished within as short as 24 h to even higher degrees.

Microstructure and Tensile Properties of Melt-Spun Filaments of Polybutene-1 and Butene-1/Ethylene Copolymer

Polybutene-1 with form I crystals exhibits excellent creep resistance and environmental stress crack resistance. The filaments of polybutene-1 and its random copolymer with 4 mol% ethylene co-units were produced via extrusion melt spinning, which are expected to be in form I states and show outstanding mechanical properties. The variances in microstructure, crystallization-melting behavior, and mechanical properties between homopolymer and copolymer filaments were analyzed using SEM, SAXS/WAXD, DSC, and tensile tests. The crystallization of form II and subsequent phase transition into form I finished after the melt-spinning process in the copolymer sample while small amounts of form II crystals remained in homopolymer filaments. Surprisingly, copolymer filaments exhibited higher tensile strength and Young's modulus than homopolymer filaments, while the homopolymer films showed better mechanical properties than copolymer films. The high degree of orientation and long fibrous crystals play a critical role in the superior properties of copolymer filaments. The results indicate that the existence of ethylene increases the chain flexibility and benefits the formation of intercrystalline links during spinning, which contributes to an enhancement of mechanical properties. The structure-property correlation of melt-spun PB-1 filaments provides a reference for the development of polymer fibers with excellent creep resistance.

Effect of Annealing Process and Molecular Weight on the Polymorphic Transformation from Form II to Form I of Poly(1-butene)

Poly(1-butene) (PB-1) resin has excellent mechanical properties, outstanding creep resistance, environmental stress crack resistance and other excellent properties. However, PB-1 resin experiences a crystal transformation for a period, which seriously affects the production efficiency and directly restricts its large-scale commercial production and application. The factors affecting the crystal transformation of PB-1 are mainly divided into external and internal factors. External factors include crystallization temperature, thermal history, nucleating agent, pressure, solvent induction, etc., and internal factors include chain length, copolymerization composition, isotacticity, its distribution, etc. In this study, to avoid the interference of molecular weight distribution on crystallization behavior, five PB-1 samples with narrow molecular weight distribution (between 1.09 and 1.44) and different molecular weights (from 23 to 710 k) were chosen to research the influence of temperature and time in the step-by-step annealing process and molecular weight on the crystal transformation by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). When the total annealing time was the same, the step-by-step annealing process can significantly accelerate the rate of transformation from crystal form II to I. PB-1 samples with different molecular weights have the same dependence on annealing temperature, and the optimal nucleation temperature (i.e., low annealing temperature, T_l) and growth temperature (i.e., high annealing temperature, T_h) were -10 °C and 40 °C, respectively. At these two temperatures, the crystal form I obtained by step-by-step annealing had the highest content; other lower or higher annealing temperatures would reduce the rate of crystal transformation. When the annealing temperature was the same, crystal form I first increased with annealing time t_l, then gradually reached a plateau, but the time to reach a plateau was different. The crystalline form I contents of the samples with lower molecular weight increased linearly with annealing time t_h. However, the crystalline form I contents of the samples with higher molecular weight increased rapidly with annealing time t_h at the beginning, and then transformation speed from form II to form I slowed down, which implied that controlling T_l/t_l and T_h/t_h can tune the different contents of form I and form II. At the same T_l/t_l or T_h/t_h, with increasing molecular weight, the transformation speed from form II to form I via the step-by-step annealing process firstly increased and then slowed down due to the competition of the number of linked molecules and molecular chain mobility during crystallization. This study definitely provides an effective method for accelerating the transformation of poly(1-butene) crystal form, which not only has important academic significance, but also has vital industrial application.

Investigation of the synergistic effect of melt-extension and nanofiller on the crystal-crystal phase transition from form II to I of isotactic polybutene-1

New questions and conjectures are raised on the crystal-crystal phase transition of isotactic polybutene-1 (iPB-1) containing nanofiller in the flow field. In this work, we investigate the phase transition from flow-induced oriented form II to I in iPB-1 blends with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a homemade two-drum extensional rheometer combined with in situ wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements. The MWCNTs show a limited promoting effect on the phase transition kinetics under quiescent conditions, while the phase transition kinetic is highly accelerated with the impose of melt-extension. When the loading extension strain is 0.5 or 2.0, the half time of phase transition (t_1/2) is shortened from tens of hours to a few hours, depending on the melt-extension strain and the MWCNTs content in iPB-1. When the extension strain increases to 3.5, t_1/2 decreases to about 30 min, which is independent of the MWCNTs content in all iPB-1 blends except in blends with MWCNTs content of 1%, where the phase transition rate in the middle and late stages is restrained. It's speculated that flow-induced molecular orientation or shish-kebab morphology affects the internal stress or stress transfer. The addition of a nanofiller enlarged the effect of melt-extension through strengthening the localized intensity of flow field. In general, the combination of nanofiller and melt-extension can obviously promote the phase transition kinetics.

The II-I Phase Transition Behavior of Butene-1 Copolymers with Hydroxyl Groups

The crystallization and II–I phase transition of functionalized polybutene-1 with hydroxyl groups were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that the incorporated hydroxyl groups increase the nucleation density but decrease the growth rate in melt crystallization. Interestingly, for the generated tetragonal form II, the presence of polar hydroxyl groups can effectively accelerate the phase transition into the thermodynamically stable modification of trigonal form I, especially with stepwise annealing and high incorporation. Using stepwise annealing, II–I phase transition was enhanced by an additional nucleation step performed at a relatively low temperature, and the optimal nucleation temperature to obtain the maximum transition degree was ‒10 °C, which is independent from the content of hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, the accelerating effect of hydroxyl groups on the II–I transition kinetics can be increased by reducing the crystallization temperature when preparing form II crystallites. These results provide a potential molecular design approach for developing polybutene-1 materials.

Preparation and crystalline transformation of functionalized poly(1-butene) containing PFPU and mPEG side chain

A series of 1-butene/pentafluorophenylundec-1-ene ester random copolymers were synthesized under the Ziegler–Natta catalyst system. The content of the pentafluorophenyl (PFP) group in the copolymer can reach up to 0.59 mol%. The DSC test found that the PFP groups attached to the PB main chain retard the crystalline transformation of Form II to Form I. Nucleophilic aromatic substitutions of pentafluorophenyl ester occurred with biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEG) introduced into the side chain of PB under very mild conditions. The results show that not only is the crystallization rate of mPEG functionalized PB increased, but also T_m, T_c, χ_c and the crystalline phase transition rate of Form II to Form I are also enhanced. Among them, mPEG with a M_n of 500 has the best promoting effect. On the other hand, the hydrophilicity of mPEG-functionalized PB is improved, and it is proportional to the chain length of mPEG. However, the experimental results show that the regularity of the PB structure is the determinant of the rate of crystallization and phase transition.

Polymorph selection during melt crystallization of the isotactic polybutene-1 homopolymer depending on the melt state and crystallization pressure

This work investigated the crystalline forms obtained from melt crystallization in the isotactic polybutene-1 (iPB-1) homopolymer via manipulation of the temperature at which samples were melted (Tmelt) and crystallization pressure (Pcry). Unlike the results under atmospheric conditions where the molten sample crystallized into the pure form II and the crystallization temperature and kinetics were affected obviously by Tmelt, the melted sample crystallized into forms II or I' under high pressure, depending on Tmelt and Pcry. The content of form I' decreases with increasing Tmelt or decreasing Pcry. Meanwhile, the critical pressure for the formation of pure form I' increases with increasing Tmelt. The formation of form I' is attributed to the memory effect of the melt which preserved some ordered sequence of crystal and the high pressure (Pcry) which suppressed the nucleation and growth of the kinetically favored form II, which results in the formation of form I'. In addition, the melt crystallized form II transforms to form I under high pressure conditions; thus forms I, I' and II are observed. The relative contents of the three crystalline forms on samples for different Tmelt and Pcry are obtained in this work. The result shows that the crystalline forms in melt crystallization of iPB-1 can be customized by regulating the melt state and crystallization conditions.

A new perspective to enhance the II–I transition of polybutene-1

Thermal Analysis of Crystallization and Phase Transition in Novel Polyethylene Glycol Grafted Butene-1 Copolymers

Copolymerization is an effective strategy to regulate the molecular structure and tune crystalline structures. In this work, novel butene-1 copolymers with different polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafts (number-average molecular weight M_n = 750, 2000, and 4000 g/mol) were synthesized, for the first time introducing long-chain grafts to the polybutene-1 main chain. For these PEG-grafted copolymers, crystallization, melting, and phase transition behaviors were explored using differential scanning calorimetry. With respect to the linear homopolymer, the incorporation of a trimethylsilyl group decreases the cooling crystallization temperature (T_c), whereas the presence of the long PEG grafts unexpectedly elevates T_c. For isothermal crystallization, a critical temperature was found at 70 °C, below which all polyethylene glycol-grafted butene-1 (PB-PEG) copolymers have faster crystallization kinetics than polybutene-1 (PB). The subsequent melting process shows that for the identical crystallization temperature, generated PB-PEG crystallites always have lower melting temperatures than that of PB. Moreover, the II-I phase transition behavior of copolymers is also dependent on the length of PEG grafts. When form II, obtained from isothermal crystallization at 60 °C, was annealed at 25 °C, PB-PEG-750, with the shortest PEG grafts of M_n = 750 g/mol, could have the faster transition rate than PB. However, PB-PEG-750 exhibits a negative correlation between transition rate and crystallization temperature. Differently, in PB-PEG copolymers with PEG grafts M_n = 2000 and 4000 g/mol, transition rates rise with elevating crystallization temperature, which is similar with homopolymer PB. Therefore, the grafting of the PEG side chain provides the available method to tune phase transition without sacrificing crystallization capability in butene-1 copolymers.
