The Evolution of Sonochemistry: From the Beginnings to Novel Applications

Sonochemistry is the use of ultrasonic waves in an aqueous medium, to generate acoustic cavitation. In this context, sonochemistry emerged as a focal point over the past few decades, starting as a manageable process such as a cleaning technique. Now, it is found in a wide range of applications across various chemical, physical, and biological processes, creating opportunities for analysis between these processes. Sonochemistry is a powerful and eco-friendly technique often called "green chemistry" for less energy use, toxic reagents, and residues generation. It is increasing the number of applications achieved through the ultrasonic irradiation (USI) method. Sonochemistry has been established as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative compared to traditional industrial methods. It promotes scientific and social well-being, offering non-destructive advantages, including rapid processes, improved process efficiency, enhanced product quality, and, in some cases, the retention of key product characteristics. This versatile technology has significantly contributed to the food industry, materials technology, environmental remediation, and biological research. This review is created with enthusiasm and focus on shedding light on the manifold applications of sonochemistry. It delves into this technique's evolution and current applications in cleaning, environmental remediation, microfluidic, biological, and medical fields. The purpose is to show the physicochemical effects and characteristics of acoustic cavitation in different processes across various fields and to demonstrate the extending application reach of sonochemistry. Also to provide insights into the prospects of this versatile technique and demonstrating that sonochemistry is an adapting system able to generate more efficient products or processes.

Continuous generation of cross-linked polymer nanoparticles employing an ultrasonic microreactor

In this article, a new system employing an ultrasonic microreactor coupled with a tubular reactor is presented for the continuous generation of polymer nanoparticles. The continuous generation of cross-linked polymer nanoparticles utilizing the monomer butyl methacrylate and the cross-linker ethylene glycol dimethacrylate is demonstrated. Firstly, the miniemulsion polymerization of a monomer-in-water miniemulsion is studied in a batch system. Secondly, a coiled tubular reactor is employed for the continuous polymerization of the miniemulsion generated by an ultrasonic microreactor. Finally, the influence of monomer volume fraction and surfactant concentration on the synthesized polymer nanoparticles is studied. Polymer particles in a size range of 50-250 nm are synthesized and a high polymerization conversion is achieved utilizing the system demonstrated in this article.

An Environmentally Friendly Inverse Microemulsion Method to Synthesize Polyacrylamide

Polyacrylamide (PAM) was prepared by a new method of inverse microemulsion polymerization, with (NH₄)₂S₂O₈-Na₂SO₃ as initiator and liquid paraffin/Span80-Op10/AM-H₂O-NaAc as polymerization system in this paper. The effects of initiator dosage, emulsifier dosage, monomer concentration, oil-water ratio, and temperature on molecular weight, electrical conductivity, particle size distribution, and monomer conversion were studied as well. The results indicate that that the more stable Polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer was prepared under the conditions of initiator dosage of 0.4~0.5%, emulsifier dosage of 55~60%, temperature of 40~45 °C, hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) value of 8.0~8.2, and NaAc concentration of 3%.

Bridging the gap between fundamental research and product development of long acting injectable PLGA microspheres

INTRODUCTION

Long acting Injectable PLGA microspheres have gained more and more interest and attention in the field of life cycle management of pharmaceutical products due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. So far, a multitude of trial-and-error experiments at lab scale have been used for establishing the correlation relationship between critical process parameters, critical material attributes and critical quality attributes. However, few published studies have elaborated on the development of PLGA microspheres from an industrial perspective.

In this review, the scale-up feasibility of translational technologies of PLGA microspheres manufacturing have been evaluated. Additionally, state-of-the-art of technologies and facilities in PLGA development have been summarized. Meanwhile, the industrial knowledge matrix of PLGA microspheres development and research are establishing which provide comprehensive insight for understanding properties of PLGA microspheres as controlled/sustained release vehicle.

EXPERT OPINION

There is still big gap between fundamental research in academic institute and product development in pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the difference and connection between them should be identified gradually for better understanding of PLGA microspheres development.

Exploring Various Techniques for the Chemical and Biological Synthesis of Polymeric Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles (NPs) have remarkable properties for delivering therapeutic drugs to the body’s targeted cells. NPs have shown to be significantly more efficient as drug delivery carriers than micron-sized particles, which are quickly eliminated by the immune system. Biopolymer-based polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) are colloidal systems composed of either natural or synthetic polymers and can be synthesized by the direct polymerization of monomers (e.g., emulsion polymerization, surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, mini-emulsion polymerization, micro-emulsion polymerization, and microbial polymerization) or by the dispersion of preformed polymers (e.g., nanoprecipitation, emulsification solvent evaporation, emulsification solvent diffusion, and salting-out). The desired characteristics of NPs and their target applications are determining factors in the choice of method used for their production. This review article aims to shed light on the different methods employed for the production of PNPs and to discuss the effect of experimental parameters on the physicochemical properties of PNPs. Thus, this review highlights specific properties of PNPs that can be tailored to be employed as drug carriers, especially in hospitals for point-of-care diagnostics for targeted therapies.

Fabrication of Microfiber-Templated Microfluidic Chips with Microfibrous Channels for High Throughput and Continuous Production of Nanoscale Droplets

A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic chip with well-interconnected microfibrous channels was fabricated by using an electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) microfibrous matrix and 3D-printed pattern as templates. The microfiber-templated microfluidic chip (MTMC) was used to produce nanoscale emulsions and spheres through multiple emulsification at many small micro-orifice junctions among microfibrous channels. The emulsion formation mechanisms in the MTMC were the cross-junction dripping or Y-junction splitting at the micro-orifice junctions. We demonstrated the high throughput and continuous production of water-in-oil emulsions and polyethylene glycol-diacrylate (PEG-DA) spheres with controlled size ranges from 2.84 μm to 83.6 nm and 1.03 μm to 45.7 nm, respectively. The average size of the water droplets was tuned by changing the micro-orifice diameter of the MTMC and the flow rate of the continuous phase. The MTMC theoretically produced 58 trillion PEG-DA nanospheres per hour without high shear force. In addition, we demonstrated the higher encapsulation efficiency of the PEG-DA microspheres in the MTMC than that of the microspheres fabricated by ultrasonication. The MTMC can be used as a powerful platform for the large-scale and continuous productions of emulsions and spheres.
