γ-Ray Irradiation Significantly Enhances Capacitive Energy Storage Performance of Polymer Dielectric Films

Polymer dielectric capacitors are fundamental in advanced electronics and power grids but suffer from low energy density, hindering miniaturization of compact electrical systems. It is shown that high-energy and strong penetrating γ-irradiation significantly enhances capacitive energy storage performance of polymer dielectrics. γ-irradiated biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films exhibit an extraordinarily high energy density of 10.4 J cm-3 at 968 MV m-1 with an efficiency of 97.3%. In particular, an energy density of 4.06 J cm-3 with an ultrahigh efficiency of 98% is reliably maintained through 20 000 charge-discharge cycles under 600 MV m-1. At 125 °C, the γ-irradiated BOPP film still delivers a high discharged energy density of 5.88 J cm-3 with an efficiency of 90% at 770 MV m-1. Substantial improvements are also achieved for γ-irradiated cycloolefin copolymers at a high temperature of 150 °C, verifying the strategy generalizability. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the excellent performance should be related to the γ-irradiation induced polar functional groups with high electron affinity in the molecular chain, which offer deep energy traps to impede charge transport. This work provides a simple and generally applicable strategy for developing high-performance polymer dielectrics.

Effect of Drawing Parameters on the Properties of Polypropylene/Inorganic Particles Composites by Solid-State Die Drawing

Die drawing is an effective method for improving the properties of polymer. In this work, polypropylene (PP)/inorganic particle composites were fabricated by a solid-state die drawing process to investigate the effects of drawing parameters, such as inorganic particles types, drawing temperature, and drawing speed, on the thermal properties, microstructure, and mechanical behavior of the drawn composites. The mechanical properties of the material were significantly improved through this processing method. For the drawn PP/inorganic particle composites with 45 wt% CaCO₃, when the drawing speed was 2.0 m/min and the drawing temperature was 110 °C, the density of the drawn composites reached the lowest at 1.00 g/cm³. At this time, the tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength of the drawn composites were 128.32 MPa, 77.12 MPa, and 170.42 KJ/m², respectively. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of lightweight and high-strength PP-based composites, which have broad application prospects in the field of engineering and structural materials.

DFT Functionals for Modeling of Polyethylene Chains Cross-Linked by Metal Atoms. DLPNO-CCSD(T) Benchmark Calculations

Density functional theory (DFT) functionals for calculations of binding energies (BEs) of the polyethylene (PE) chains cross-linked by selected metal atoms (M) are benchmarked against DLPNO-CCSD(T) and DLPNO-CCSD(T1) data. PEX-M-PEX complexes as compared with plain parallel PEX···PEX chains with X = 3-9 carbon atoms are model species characterized by a cooperative effect of covalent C-M-C bonds and interchain dispersion interactions. The accuracy of DLPNO-CC methods was assessed by a comparison of BEs with the canonical CCSD(T) results for small PE3-M-PE3 complexes. Functionals for PEX···PEX and closed-shell PEX-M-PEX complexes (M = Be, Mg, Zn) were benchmarked against DLPNO-CCSD(T) BEs; open-shell complexes (M = Li, Ag, Au) were benchmarked against the DLPNO-CCSD(T1) method with iterative triples. Three dispersion corrections were combined with 25 DFT functionals for calculations of BEs with respect to PEX-M and PEX fragments employing def2-TZVPP and def2-QZVPP basis sets. Accuracy to within 5% for the closed-shell PEX-M-PEX complexes was achieved with five functionals. Less accurate are functionals for the open-shell PEX-M-PEX complexes; only two functionals deviate by less than 15% from DLPNO-CCSD(T1). Particularly problematic were PEX-Li-PEX complexes. A reasonable overall performance across all complexes in terms of the mean absolute percentage error is found for the range-separated hybrid functionals ωB97X-D3 and CAM-B3LYP/D3(BJ)-ABC.

Influence of dipole and intermolecular interaction on the tuning dielectric and energy storage properties of polystyrene-based polymers

A dielectric polymer with high energy density is in high demand in modern electric and electronic systems. The current polymer dielectrics are facing the tradeoff between high energy density and low energy loss. Although many efforts have been devoted to solving the problem by modifying biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and glassy polymers, limited success has been achieved. In the present work, we disperse the high polar nitrile units in a low polar polystyrene (PSt) matrix to avoid the strong coupling force among the adjacent polar groups and reduce the relaxation-induced high dielectric loss. In addition, the possible charge transportation offered by phenyl groups could be blocked by the enlarged bandgap. Notably, the induced polarization is established between the nitrile and phenyl groups, which may lead to the copolymer chain being more densely packed. As a result, excellent energy storage performances, including the high energy density and low loss, are achieved in the resultant poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (AS). For instance, AS-4 exhibits a Ue of 11.4 J cm-3 and η of 91% at ambient temperature and 550 MV m-1. Manipulating the dipole polarization in the low polar glassy polymer matrix is verified to be a facile strategy for the design of a high-energy storage dielectric polymer.

Enhancement of the Surface Properties on Polypropylene Film Using Side-Chain Crystalline Block Copolymers

The consumption of polypropylene (PP) has significantly increased over that of other materials because of its light weight, easy molding, and high mechanical strength. However, the applications of PP are limited, owing to the lack of surface properties, especially with respect to adhesive properties and hydrophilicity. In this study, we developed a surface modification method for enhancing the adhesive properties and hydrophilicity on the PP surface using a side-chain crystalline block copolymer (SCCBC). This method was simple and involved the dipping of a PP film in a diluted SCCBC solution. The optimized modification conditions for enhancing the adhesive properties of PP were investigated. The results revealed that the adhesion strength of PP modified with the SCCBC of behenyl acrylate and 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate was enhanced to 2.00 N/mm (T-peel test) and 1.05 N/mm2 (tensile shear test). In addition, the hydrophilicity of PP modified with the SCCBC of behenyl acrylate and di(ethylene glycol)ethyl ether acrylate was enhanced to a water contact angle of 69 ± 4°. Surface analysis was also performed to elucidate a plausible mechanism for PP modification by the SCCBCs. This surface modification method is facile and enhances desirable properties for the wide application of PP.
