Abstract
There is an urgent need for a simple and effective method to enhance the freshness of fruits during transportation. In this study, we developed a composite antibacterial film (CAR film) using carvacrol and soy protein isolate (SPI). The mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, antibacterial activity, and antioxidant capacity of the film were characterized. The results demonstrated that, compared to the soy protein isolate film, the film with 2.5 % carvacrol content exhibited superior mechanical properties (tear strength decreased by approximately 37 %, elongation at break increased by about 108 %), hydrophobicity (water vapor permeability decreased by 38 %), antibacterial activity (inhibition zone diameters against E. coli and S. aureus were 14.21 mm and 11.83 mm, respectively), antioxidant capacity (increased by 5 to 6 times), and biocompatibility (cell survival rate exceeded 90 %). Grape preservation experiments further confirmed that the CAR film effectively prolongs shelf life. Therefore, CAR film is a promising packaging material for fruit preservation.

Abstract
This study aimed to address the challenge of extending the shelf life of Boletus wild mushrooms, which are prone to environmental and microbial contamination. An antibacterial film composed of polylactic acid (PLA) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with citral (CMP film) was developed for this purpose. Fifteen quality indices were assessed, and the data were integrated using AHP and TOPSIS to evaluate the film's efficacy. The CMP film effectively maintained the quality of mushroom over time. Additionally, a Nonlinear Global Optimization-Long Short-Term Memory (NGO-LSTM) model was employed to predict storage quality, using seven highly correlated quality indicators. The model achieved a high predictive accuracy, with the R2 exceeding 0.999. This study presents a novel packaging solution and a predictive model that together enhance the storage and quality control of Boletus wild mushrooms.

Abstract
Bioactive metal-based nanostructures, particularly zinc oxide (ZnO), are promising materials for bone tissue engineering. However, integrating them into 3D-printed polymers using traditional blending methods reduces the cell performance. Alternative surface deposition techniques often require extreme conditions that are unsuitable for polymers. To address these issues, we propose a metal-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method to modify 3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds with ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), facilitating the growth of ZnO nanoarrays (NAs) at a low-temperature (55 °C). Physicochemical characterizations revealed that the ZnO NPs form both physical and chemical bonds with the PCL surface; chemical bonding occurs between the carboxylate groups of PCL and Zn(OH)2 during seed deposition and hydrothermal synthesis. The ZnO NPs and NAs grown for a longer time (18 h) on the surface of PCL scaffolds exhibit significant proliferation and early differentiation of osteoblast-like cells. The proposed method is suitable for the surface modification of thermally degradable polymers, opening up new possibilities for the deposition of diverse metals.

Abstract
Fully biodegradable packaging materials are demanded to resolve the issue of plastic pollution. However, the fresh food storage performance of biodegradable materials is generally much lower than that of plastics due to their high permeability, microbial friendliness, and limited stretchability and transparency. Here a biodegradable packaging material is reported with high fresh food storage performance based on an oil-infused bacterial cellulose (OBC) porous film. The oil infusion significantly improved cellulose's food-keeping performance by reducing its gas permeability, increasing its stretchability and transparency, and enabling the active release of green vapor-phase preservative molecules, while maintaining its intrinsically high degradability. Strawberries stored in a container with the OBC lid at 23 °C after 5 days exhibited a moldy rate of 0%, in contrast to the 100% moldy rate of those stored by poly(ethylene). Enhanced storage performance is also obtained on tomatoes, pork, and shrimp. The OBC film is naturally degraded after being buried in wet soil at 30 °C for 9 days, identical to the degradation rate of bacterial cellulose. The liquid seal strategy broadly applies to different celluloses, providing a general option for developing cellulose-based biodegradable packaging materials.

Abstract
Exploring biopolymer-based antibacterial packaging materials is promising to tackle the issues caused by petroleum plastic pollution and microbial contamination. Herein, a novel packaging material with two antibacterial modes, continuous and efficient, is constructed by dispersing positively charged spermidine carbon dots (Spd-CDs) in a carrageenan/polyvinyl alcohol (CP) composite biopolymer. The obtained nanocomposite film (CP/CDs film) not only gradually releases the ultra-small Spd-CDs but also rapidly generates reactive oxygen species to inhibit the reproduction of E. coli and S. aureus. Benefiting from the complementary advantages of carrageenan and polyvinyl alcohol, as well as the addition of Spd-CDs, the CP/CDs films exhibit high transparency, good mechanical performance, water vapor barrier ability, low migration, etc. The CP/CDs film as a packaging material is validated to be effective in preventing microbial contamination of pork samples. Our prepared nanocomposite film with sustainability and efficient antibacterial properties is expected as food active packaging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Active and smart food packaging based on natural polymers and pH-sensitive dyes as indicators has attracted widespread attention. In the present study, an antioxidant and amine-response color indicator film was developed by incorporating bilirubin (BIL) into the κ-carrageenan (Carr) matrix. RESULTS It was found that the introduction of BIL had no effect on the crystal/chemical structure, water sensitivity and mechanical performance of the Carr-based films. However, the barrier properties to light and the thermal stability were significantly improved after the addition BIL. The Carr/BIL composite films exhibited excellent 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (i.e. DPPH)/2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (i.e. ABTS) free radical scavenging abilities and color responsiveness to different concentrations of ammonia. The application assay reflected that the Carr/BIL0.0075 film was effective in delaying the oxidative deterioration of shrimp during storage and realizing the color response of its freshness through the change of b* value. CONCLUSION Active and smart packaging films were successfully prepared by incorporating different contents of BIL into the Carr matrix. The present study helps to further encourage the design and development of a multi-functional packaging material. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The biodegradable antibacterial composite film blended with starch and sodium alginate was developed by solution casting method, using montmorillonite as the fortifier and star anise oil as the bacteriostat. Infrared analysis showed that montmorillonite and star anise oil were successfully incorporated into starch and sodium alginate to form a stable composite film. The addition of 6 wt% montmorillonite could enhance several properties of the films, including barrier properties, optical properties, thermal stability and mechanical properties. Meanwhile, the incorporation of star anise oil made the composite films have antibacterial properties to resist E. coli. Packing cherry tomatoes with starch‑sodium alginate-montmorillonite-star anise oil composite film could reduce the weight loss rate and decay rate of fresh cherry tomatoes. Soil burial experiments showed that the composite films exhibited a continuous biodegradation process. The starch‑sodium alginate-montmorillonite-star anise oil films decomposed into little pieces and were completely mixed in the soil within 22 days, which offered an application foreground for the development of biodegradable food packaging film with bacteriostatic activity.

Abstract
Nature-derived chemicals have recently gained increased attention to settle down the challenges in the food industry. Quercetin has long been used as a natural medicine but its photoactivity has been neglected. In this work, by combining photodynamic bacteria inactivation (PDI) with an edible coating (Pectin/Quercetin) derived from FDA-approved chemicals, extend shelf-life and protected commercial quality of fresh-cut apples were achieved. Firstly, the potential photoactivated antibacterial performance of Quercetin (a natural plant flavonoid) was clarified with the treatment of a simulated sunlight lamp, realizing antibacterial efficacy of 100 % towards S. aureus (50 min) and L. monocytogenes (80 min) with light treatment. To develop safe and effective preservation of fresh-cut apples, Pectin/Quercetin edible coatings with 100 μmol/L quercetin were adopted. The results showed that the prepared edible coatings form a protective barrier over the surface of apples, effectively resisting bacterial infection and extending shelf life to 10 days while maintaining good commercial quality (including preferable color, keeping 100 % hardness, 80 % sugar content and 17.3 % weightlessness rate). Therefore, the prepared light-driven Pectin/Quercetin in this work has the potential to develop as fresh-cut fruit preservation technology.

Abstract
Metal sulfide nanoparticles have recently attracted much attention due to their unique physical and functional properties. Metal sulfide nanoparticles used as optoelectronic and biomedical materials in the past decades are promising for making functional nanocomposite films due to their low toxicity and strong antibacterial activity. Recently, copper sulfide and zinc sulfide nanomaterials have been used to produce food packaging films for active packaging. Metal sulfide nanoparticles added as nanofillers are attracting attention in packaging applications due to their excellent potential to improve mechanical, barrier properties, and antibacterial activity. This review covers the fabrication process and important applications of metal sulfide nanoparticles. The development of metal sulfides reinforcing mainly copper sulfide and zinc sulfide nanomaterials as multifunctional nanofillers in bio-based films for active packaging applications has been comprehensively reviewed. As the recognition of metal sulfide nanoparticles as a functional filler increases, the development and application potential of active packaging films using them is expected to increase.

Abstract
A novel bio-based nanocomposite film was developed using the combination of gelatine and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as a polymer matrix and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) as nanofillers. The nanocomposite film solution was developed using simple solution mixing and film prepared by the following casting methods. The fabricated nanocomposite film containing 2 wt% of ZnONP shows excellent UV-light barrier properties (>95%) and high transparency (>75%). The presence of ZnONP also improves the mechanical strength of the film by ~30% compared to pristine gelatin/CNF-based film, while the flexibility and rigidity of the nanocomposite film were also slightly improved. The addition of ZnONP slightly increased (~10%) the hydrophobicity while the water vapor barrier properties remain unaltered. The hydrodynamic properties of the bio-based film were also changed in the presence of ZnONP, moisture content and the swelling ratio slightly enhanced, whereas water solubility was decreased. Moreover, the integration of ZnONP introduced antibacterial activity toward foodborne pathogens. The fabricated bio-based nanocomposite film could be useful in active packaging applications.

Abstract
Functional food packaging films were prepared using a binary mixture of chitosan and gelatin through crosslinking with genipin and hybridization with rosemary essential oil and quercetin. The mixture of chitosan and gelatin produced the compatible film, and the added fillers also showed good compatibility. The physical properties of the chitosan/gelatin film were not greatly affected by crosslinking with genipin, and the functionality of the composite film was increased by the addition of rosemary essential oil and quercetin. The bioactive additives did not significantly affect the hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier properties of the chitosan/gelatin film but significantly changed the color, while the mechanical and thermal properties were slightly affected. The addition of these functional fillers significantly improved the UV protection, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties of the chitosan/gelatin film. Therefore, the novel chitosan/gelatin film with genipin crosslinking and the integration of rosemary essential oil and quercetin is considered to have high potential for applications in active food packaging.
