Vacancy-Rich MoSSe with Sulfiphilicity-Lithiophilicity Dual Function for Kinetics-Enhanced and Dendrite-Free Li-S Batteries

Promoting Polysulfide Redox Reactions through Electronic Spin Manipulation

Catalytic additives able to accelerate the lithium-sulfur redox reaction are a key component of sulfur cathodes in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Their design focuses on optimizing the charge distribution within the energy spectra, which involves refinement of the distribution and occupancy of the electronic density of states. Herein, beyond charge distribution, we explore the role of the electronic spin configuration on the polysulfide adsorption properties and catalytic activity of the additive. We showcase the importance of this electronic parameter by generating spin polarization through a defect engineering approach based on the introduction of Co vacancies on the surface of CoSe nanosheets. We show vacancies change the electron spin state distribution, increasing the number of unpaired electrons with aligned spins. This local electronic rearrangement enhances the polysulfide adsorption, reducing the activation energy of the Li-S redox reactions. As a result, more uniform nucleation and growth of Li2S and an accelerated liquid-solid conversion in LSB cathodes are obtained. These translate into LSB cathodes exhibiting capacities up to 1089 mA h g-1 at 1 C with 0.017% average capacity loss after 1500 cycles, and up to 5.2 mA h cm-2, with 0.16% decay per cycle after 200 cycles in high sulfur loading cells.

Formation of 2D Amorphous Lithium Sulfide Enabled by Mo2C Clusters Loaded Carbon Scaffold for High-Performance Lithium Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, operated through the interconversion between sulfur and solid-state lithium sulfide, are regarded as next-generation energy storage systems. However, the sluggish kinetics of lithium sulfide deposition/dissolution, caused by its insoluble and insulated nature, hampers the practical use of Li-S batteries. Herein, leaf-like carbon scaffold (LCS) with the modification of Mo2C clusters (Mo2C@LCS) is reported as host material of sulfur powder. During cycles, the dissociative Mo ions at the Mo2C@LCS/electrolyte interface are detected to exhibit competitive binding energy with Li ions for lithium sulfide anions, which disrupts the deposition behavior of crystalline lithium sulfide and trends a shift in the configuration of lithium sulfide toward an amorphous structure. Combining the related electrochemical study and first-principle calculation, it is revealed that the formation of amorphous lithium sulfides shows significantly improved kinetics for lithium sulfide deposition and decomposition. As a result, the obtained Mo2C@LCS/S cathode shows an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.015% per cycle at a high mass loading of 9.5 mg cm-2 after 700 cycles. More strikingly, an ultrahigh sulfur loading of 61.2 mg cm-2 can also be achieved. This work defines an efficacious strategy to advance the commercialization of Mo2C@LCS host for Li-S batteries.

Rechargeable Metal-Sulfur Batteries: Key Materials to Mechanisms

Rechargeable metal-sulfur batteries are considered promising candidates for energy storage due to their high energy density along with high natural abundance and low cost of raw materials. However, they could not yet be practically implemented due to several key challenges: (i) poor conductivity of sulfur and the discharge product metal sulfide, causing sluggish redox kinetics, (ii) polysulfide shuttling, and (iii) parasitic side reactions between the electrolyte and the metal anode. To overcome these obstacles, numerous strategies have been explored, including modifications to the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and binder. In this review, the fundamental principles and challenges of metal-sulfur batteries are first discussed. Second, the latest research on metal-sulfur batteries is presented and discussed, covering their material design, synthesis methods, and electrochemical performances. Third, emerging advanced characterization techniques that reveal the working mechanisms of metal-sulfur batteries are highlighted. Finally, the possible future research directions for the practical applications of metal-sulfur batteries are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to provide experimental strategies and theoretical guidance for designing and understanding the intricacies of metal-sulfur batteries; thus, it can illuminate promising pathways for progressing high-energy-density metal-sulfur battery systems.

Undercoordination Chemistry of Sulfur Electrocatalyst in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Undercoordination chemistry is an effective strategy to modulate the geometry-governed electronic structure and thereby regulate the activity of sulfur electrocatalysts. Efficient sulfur electrocatalysis is requisite to overcome the sluggish kinetics in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries aroused by multi-electron transfer and multi-phase conversions. Recent advances unveil the great promise of undercoordination chemistry in facilitating and stabilizing sulfur electrochemistry, yet a related review with systematicness and perspectives is still missing. Herein, it is carefully combed through the recent progress of undercoordination chemistry in sulfur electrocatalysis. The typical material structures and operational strategies are elaborated, while the underlying working mechanism is also detailly introduced and generalized into polysulfide adsorption behaviors, polysulfide conversion kinetics, electron/ion transport, and dynamic reconstruction. Moreover, perspectives on the future development of undercoordination chemistry are further proposed.

A Review on Engineering Transition Metal Compound Catalysts to Accelerate the Redox Kinetics of Sulfur Cathodes for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Engineering transition metal compounds (TMCs) catalysts with excellent adsorption-catalytic ability has been one of the most effective strategies to accelerate the redox kinetics of sulfur cathodes. Herein, this review focuses on engineering TMCs catalysts by cation doping/anion doping/dual doping, bimetallic/bi-anionic TMCs, and TMCs-based heterostructure composites. It is obvious that introducing cations/anions to TMCs or constructing heterostructure can boost adsorption-catalytic capacity by regulating the electronic structure including energy band, d/p-band center, electron filling, and valence state. Moreover, the electronic structure of doped/dual-ionic TMCs are adjusted by inducing ions with different electronegativity, electron filling, and ion radius, resulting in electron redistribution, bonds reconstruction, induced vacancies due to the electronic interaction and changed crystal structure such as lattice spacing and lattice distortion. Different from the aforementioned two strategies, heterostructures are constructed by two types of TMCs with different Fermi energy levels, which causes built-in electric field and electrons transfer through the interface, and induces electron redistribution and arranged local atoms to regulate the electronic structure. Additionally, the lacking studies of the three strategies to comprehensively regulate electronic structure for improving catalytic performance are pointed out. It is believed that this review can guide the design of advanced TMCs catalysts for boosting redox of lithium sulfur batteries.

Interfacial engineering of transition metal dichalcogenide/carbon heterostructures for electrochemical energy applications

To support the global goal of carbon neutrality, numerous efforts have been devoted to the advancement of electrochemical energy conversion (EEC) and electrochemical energy storage (EES) technologies. For these technologies, transition metal dichalcogenide/carbon (TMDC/C) heterostructures have emerged as promising candidates for both electrode materials and electrocatalysts over the past decade, due to their complementary advantages. It is worth noting that interfacial properties play a crucial role in establishing the overall electrochemical characteristics of TMDC/C heterostructures. However, despite the significant scientific contribution in this area, a systematic understanding of TMDC/C heterostructures' interfacial engineering is currently lacking. This literature review aims to focus on three types of interfacial engineering, namely interfacial orientation engineering, interfacial stacking engineering, and interfacial doping engineering, of TMDC/C heterostructures for their potential applications in EES and EEC devices. To accomplish this goal, a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches was used to allow the analysis and summary of the fundamental electrochemical properties and preparation strategies of TMDC/C heterostructures. Moreover, this review highlights the design and utilization of the interfacial engineering of TMDC/C heterostructures for specific EES and EEC devices. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using interfacial engineering of TMDC/C heterostructures in practical EES and EEC devices are outlined. We expect that this review will effectively guide readers in their understanding, design, and application of interfacial engineering of TMDC/C heterostructures.

Regulating the Spin State Configuration in Bimetallic Phosphorus Trisulfides for Promoting Sulfur Redox Kinetics

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries suffer from sluggish kinetics due to the poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes and polysulfide shutting. Current studies on sulfur redox catalysis mainly focus on the adsorption and catalytic conversion of lithium polysulfides but ignore the modulation of the electronic structure of the catalysts which involves spin-related charge transfer and orbital interactions. In this work, bimetallic phosphorus trisulfides embedded in Prussian blue analogue-derived nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanocubes (FeCoPS3/NCs) were elaborately synthesized as a host to reveal the relationship between the catalytic activity and the spin state configuration for Li-S batteries. Orbital spin splitting in FeCoPS3 drives the electronic structure transition from low-spin to high-spin states, generating more unpaired electrons on the 3d orbit. Specifically, the nondegenerate orbitals involved in the high-spin configuration of FeCoPS3 result in the upshift of energy levels, generating more active electronic states. Such tailored electronic structure increases the charge transfer, influences the d-band center, and further modifies the adsorption energy with lithium polysulfides and the potential reaction pathways. Consequently, the cell with FeCoPS3/NC host exhibits an ultralow capacity decay of 0.037% per cycle over 1000 cycles. This study proposed a general strategy for sculpting geometric configurations to enable spin and orbital topology regulation in Li-S battery catalysts.

Furnishing Continuous Efficient Bidirectional Polysulfide Conversion for Long-Life and High-Loading Lithium-Sulfur Batteries via the Built-In Electric Field

Most catalysts cannot accelerate uninterrupted conversion of polysulfides, resulting in poor long-cycle and high-loading performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, rich p-n junction CoS2 /ZnS heterostructures embedded on N-doped carbon nanosheets are fabricated by ion-etching and vulcanization as a continuous and efficient bidirectional catalyst. The p-n junction built-in electric field in the CoS2 /ZnS heterostructure not only accelerates the transformation of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), but also promotes the diffusion and decomposition for Li2 S the from CoS2 to ZnS avoiding the aggregation of lithium sulfide (Li2 S). Meanwhile, the heterostructure possesses a strong chemisorption ability to anchor LiPSs and superior affinity to induce homogeneous Li deposition. The assembled cell with a CoS2 /ZnS@PP separator delivers a cycling stability with a capacity decay of 0.058% per cycle at 1.0 C after 1000 cycles, and a decent areal capacity of 8.97 mA h cm-2 at an ultrahigh sulfur mass loading of 6 mg cm-2 . This work reveals that the catalyst continuously and efficiently converts polysulfides via abundant built-in electric fields to promote Li-S chemistry.

Boosting Lean Electrolyte Lithium-Sulfur Battery Performance with Transition Metals: A Comprehensive Review

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have received widespread attention, and lean electrolyte Li-S batteries have attracted additional interest because of their higher energy densities. This review systematically analyzes the effect of the electrolyte-to-sulfur (E/S) ratios on battery energy density and the challenges for sulfur reduction reactions (SRR) under lean electrolyte conditions. Accordingly, we review the use of various polar transition metal sulfur hosts as corresponding solutions to facilitate SRR kinetics at low E/S ratios (< 10 µL mg-1), and the strengths and limitations of different transition metal compounds are presented and discussed from a fundamental perspective. Subsequently, three promising strategies for sulfur hosts that act as anchors and catalysts are proposed to boost lean electrolyte Li-S battery performance. Finally, an outlook is provided to guide future research on high energy density Li-S batteries.

Electrospun CuCoN0.6 coating necklace-like N-doped carbon nanofibers for high performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Freestanding electrodes with high energy density and cycle stability have attracted attention on the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, both severe shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics hinder their practical applications. Herein, we employed the electrospinning and subsequent nitridation processes to prepare a necklace-like structure of CuCoN_0.6 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon nanofibers (CuCoN_0.6/NC) as freestanding sulfur host for Li-S batteries. Such bimetallic nitride boosts chemical adsorption and catalytic activity throughout detailed theoretical calculation and experimental electrochemical characterization. The three-dimensional conductive necklace-like framework could provide abundant cavities for realizing high sulfur utilization and alleviating the volume variation, as well as fast lithium-ions diffusion and electron transfer. The Li-S cell with the S@CuCoN_0.6/NC cathode delivers a stable cycling performance with a capacity attenuation rate of 0.076% per cycle after 150cycles at 2.0C and an exceptional capacity retention of 657 mAh g^-1 even at a high sulfur loading of 6.8 mg cm^-2 over 100cycles. The facile and scalable method can help promote the widespread application of fabrics.

Improving performances of Lithium-Sulfur cells via regulating of VSe2 functional mediator with Doping-Defect engineering and Electrode-Separator integration strategy

The sluggish redox kinetics and the severe shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) are the main key issues which would hinder the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In this work, a nickel-doped vanadium selenide in-situ grows on reduced graphene oxide(rGO) to form a two-dimensional (2D) composite Ni-VSe₂/rGO by a simple solvothermal method. When it is used as a modified separator in Li-S batteries, the Ni-VSe₂/rGO material with the doped defect and super-thin layered structure can greatly adsorb LiPSs and catalyze the conversion reaction of LiPSs, resulting in effectively reducing LiPSs diffusion and suppressing the shuttle effect. More importantly, the cathode-separator bonding body is first developed as a new strategy of electrode-separator integration in Li-S batteries, which not only could decrease the LiPSs dissolution and improve the catalysis performance of the functional separator as the upper current-collector, but also is good for the high sulfur loading and the low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio for high energy density Li-S batteries. When the Ni-VSe₂/rGO-PP (polypropylene, Celgard 2400) modified separator is applied, the Li-S cell can retain 510.3 mA h g^-1 capacity after 1190 cycles at 0.5C. In the electrode-separator integrated system, the Li-S cell can still maintain 552.9 mA h g^-1 for 190 cycles at a sulfur loading 6.4 mg cm^-2 and 4.9 mA h cm^-2 for 100 cycles at a sulfur loading 7.0 mg cm^-2. The experimental results indicate that both the doped defect engineering and the super-thin layered structure design might optimally be chosen to fabricate a new modified separator material, and especially, the electrode-separator integration strategy would open a practical way to promote the electrochemical behavior of Li-S batteries with high sulfur loading and low E/S ratio.

Anion Defects Engineering of Ternary Nb-Based Chalcogenide Anodes Toward High-Performance Sodium-Based Dual-Ion Batteries

Highlights

We developed an efficient and extensible strategy to produce the single-phase ternary NbSSe nanohybrids with defect-enrich microstructure. The anionic-Se doping play a key role in effectively modulating the electronic structure and surface chemistry of NbS2 phase, including the increased interlayers distance (0.65 nm), the enhanced intrinsic electrical conductivity (3.23 × 103 S m-1) and extra electroactive defect sites. The NbSSe/NC composite as anode exhibits rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics and increased capacitance behavior for Na+ storage, resulting in high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract

Sodium-based dual-ion batteries (SDIBs) have gained tremendous attention due to their virtues of high operating voltage and low cost, yet it remains a tough challenge for the development of ideal anode material of SDIBs featuring with high kinetics and long durability. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of N-doped carbon film-modified niobium sulfur–selenium (NbSSe/NC) nanosheets architecture, which holds favorable merits for Na+ storage of enlarged interlayer space, improved electrical conductivity, as well as enhanced reaction reversibility, endowing it with high capacity, high-rate capability and high cycling stability. The combined electrochemical studies with density functional theory calculation reveal that the enriched defects in such nanosheets architecture can benefit for facilitating charge transfer and Na+ adsorption to speed the electrochemical kinetics. The NbSSe/NC composites are studied as the anode of a full SDIBs by pairing the expanded graphite as cathode, which shows an impressively cyclic durability with negligible capacity attenuation over 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, as well as an outstanding energy density of 230.6 Wh kg−1 based on the total mass of anode and cathode.

2D-2D heterostructure of ionic liquid-exfoliated MoS2/MXene as lithium polysulfide barrier for Li-S batteries

Suppressing the dissolution and shuttling of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in electrolytes in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is the focus of researchers. Herein, functional liquid phase exfoliated MoS₂ and MXene (IL-MoS₂/MX) interlayer is proposed as the separator of LSBs. The unique alternating intercalation structure of the IL-MoS₂/MX interlayer provides a channel for ion transport while achieving uniform Li⁺ deposition on the anode side. Moreover, IL-MoS₂ achieves physical and chemical anchoring to LiPSs and lowers the energy barrier for battery reactions. As a result, the separator in the coin cell delivers an initial capacity of 764.4 mAh·g^-1 at 1C and high retention of 58.7 % after 700 cycles, with a decay only 0.059 % per cycle. Simultaneously, the excellent stability is also verified under varying current densities. Beyond that, ionic conductivity and lithium-ion migration number are adopted to confirm unique ion transport channels and uniform deposition of lithium. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, S₈ and Li₂S decomposition and nucleation energy barrier analysis are performed to verify the adsorption and catalytic conversion mechanisms. The convenient preparation and excellent performance of IL-MoS₂/MX provide a design strategy for functionalized interlayers for LSBs, and the possibility for commercialization.

Three-Dimensional Honeycomb-Like Carbon as Sulfur Host for Sodium-Sulfur Batteries without the Shuttle Effect

Sodium-sulfur batteries operating at ambient temperature are being extensively studied because of the high theoretical capacity and abundant resources, yet the long-chain polysulfides' shuttle effect causes poor cycling performance of Na-S batteries. We report an annealing/etching method to converse low-cost wheat bran to a 3D honeycomb-like carbon with abundant micropores (WBMC), which is smaller than S₈ molecular size (∼0.7 nm). Thus, the microporous structure could only fill small molecular sulfur (S_2-4). The micropores made sulfur a one-step reaction without the shuttle effect due to the formed short-chain polysulfides being insoluble. The WBMC@S exhibits an excellent initial capacity (1413 mAh g^-1) at 0.2 C, outstanding cycling performance (822 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C), and high rate performance (483 mAh g^-1 at 3.0 C). The electrochemical performance proves that the steric confinement of micropores effectively terminates the shuttle effect.

Lithium Atom Surface Diffusion and Delocalized Deposition Propelled by Atomic Metal Catalyst toward Ultrahigh-Capacity Dendrite-Free Lithium Anode

Lithium metal anode possesses overwhelming capacity and low potential but suffers from dendrite growth and pulverization, causing short lifespan and low utilization. Here, a fundamental novel insight of using single-atomic catalyst (SAC) activators to boost lithium atom diffusion is proposed to realize delocalized deposition. By combining electronic microscopies, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, theoretical simulations, and electrochemical analyses, we have unambiguously depicted that the SACs serve as kinetic activators in propelling the surface spreading and lateral redistribution of the lithium atoms for achieving dendrite-free plating morphology. Under the impressive capacity of 20 mA h cm^-2, the Li modified with SAC-activator exhibits a low overpotential of ∼50 mV at 5 mA cm^-2, a long lifespan of 900 h, and high Coulombic efficiencies during 150 cycles, much better than most literature reports. The so-coupled lithium-sulfur full battery delivers high cycling and rate performances, showing great promise toward the next-generation lithium metal batteries.
