Photospintronics: Magnetic Field-Controlled Photoemission and Light-Controlled Spin Transport in Hybrid Chiral Oligopeptide-Nanoparticle Structures

Metal-organic Frameworks in Semiconductor Devices

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a specific class of hybrid, crystalline, nano-porous materials made of metal-ion-based 'nodes' and organic linkers. Most of the studies on MOFs largely focused on porosity, chemical and structural diversity, gas sorption, sensing, drug delivery, catalysis, and separation applications. In contrast, much less reports paid attention to understanding and tuning the electrical properties of MOFs. Poor electrical conductivity of MOFs (~10-7-10-10 S cm-1), reported in earlier studies, impeded their applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and renewable energy storage. To overcome this drawback, the MOF community has adopted several intriguing strategies for electronic applications. The present review focuses on creatively designed bulk MOFs and surface-anchored MOFs (SURMOFs) with different metal nodes (from transition metals to lanthanides), ligand functionalities, and doping entities, allowing tuning and enhancement of electrical conductivity. Diverse platforms for MOFs-based electronic device fabrications, conductivity measurements, and underlying charge transport mechanisms are also addressed. Overall, the review highlights the pros and cons of MOFs-based electronics (MOFtronics), followed by an analysis of the future directions of research, including optimization of the MOF compositions, heterostructures, electrical contacts, device stacking, and further relevant options which can be of interest for MOF researchers and result in improved devices performance.

Inducing Circularly Polarized Single-Photon Emission via Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity

One of the central aims of the field of spintronics is the control of individual electron spins to effectively manage the transmission of quantized data. One well-known mechanism for controlling electronic spin transport is the chiral-induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect in which a helical nanostructure imparts a preferential spin orientation on the electronic transport. One potential application of the CISS effect is as a transduction pathway between electronic spin and circularly polarized light within nonreciprocal photonic devices. In this work, we identify and quantify the degree of chiral-induced spin-selective electronic transport in helical polyaniline films using magnetoconductive atomic force microscopy (mcAFM). We then induce circularly polarized quantum light emission from CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots placed on these films, demonstrating a degree of circular polarization of up to ∼21%. Utilizing time-resolved photoluminescence microscopy, we measure the radiative lifetime difference associated with left- and right-handed circular polarizations of single emitters. These lifetime differences, in combination with Kelvin probe mapping of the variation of surface potential with magnetization of the substrate, help establish an energy level diagram describing the spin-dependent transport pathways that enable the circularly polarized photoluminescence.

Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity

Since the initial landmark study on the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in 1999, considerable experimental and theoretical efforts have been made to understand the physical underpinnings and mechanistic features of this interesting phenomenon. As first formulated, the CISS effect refers to the innate ability of chiral materials to act as spin filters for electron transport; however, more recent experiments demonstrate that displacement currents arising from charge polarization of chiral molecules lead to spin polarization without the need for net charge flow. With its identification of a fundamental connection between chiral symmetry and electron spin in molecules and materials, CISS promises profound and ubiquitous implications for existing technologies and new approaches to answering age old questions, such as the homochiral nature of life. This review begins with a discussion of the different methods for measuring CISS and then provides a comprehensive overview of molecules and materials known to exhibit CISS-based phenomena before proceeding to identify structure-property relations and to delineate the leading theoretical models for the CISS effect. Next, it identifies some implications of CISS in physics, chemistry, and biology. The discussion ends with a critical assessment of the CISS field and some comments on its future outlook.

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of circular and square cobalt nanodots in hexagonal cells

In this work we performed a detailed numerical analysis to investigate the static and dynamic magnetic properties of hexagonal cells of square and circular cobalt nanodots as a function of the distance between them and the external magnetic field to which they are subjected. By simulating hysteresis curves with the external magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the plane of these nanostructures, we can conclude that the cobalt nanodots presented a significant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We also obtained that the coercivity increases with decreasing volume, which implies that the circular dots have a higher coercivity than the square dots. Furthermore, we studied the dynamic susceptibility of these systems and found that it is possible to control both the position and the number of resonance peaks by controlling the geometry and the distance between the magnetic nanodots. This work provides useful information on the behaviour of cobalt nanodot arrays, opening paths for the design and improvement of two-dimensional technological devices.

Chiral-induced spin selectivity in biomolecules, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and inorganic materials: a comprehensive review on recent progress

The two spin states of electrons are degenerate in nonmagnetic materials. The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect provides a new strategy for manipulating electron's spin and a deeper understanding of spin selective processes in organisms. Here, we summarize the important discoveries and recent experiments performed during the development of the CISS effect, analyze the spin polarized transport in various types of materials and discuss the mechanisms, theoretical calculations, experimental techniques and biological significance of the CISS effect. The first part of this review concisely presents a general overview of the discoveries and importance of the CISS effect, laws and underlying mechanisms of which are discussed in the next section, where several classical experimental methods for detecting the CISS effect are also introduced. Based on the organic and inorganic properties of materials, the CISS effect of organic biomolecules, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and inorganic materials are reviewed in the third, fourth and fifth sections, especially the chiral transfer mechanism of hybrid materials and the relationship between the CISS effect and life science. In addition, conclusions and prospective future of the CISS effect are outlined at the end, where the development and applications of the CISS effect in spintronics are directly described, which is helpful for designing promising chiral spintronic devices and understanding the natural status of chirality from a new perspective.

Light-Amplified CISS-Based Hybrid QD-DNA Impedimetric Device for DNA Hybridization Detection

We design and build a novel light-amplified electrochemical impedimetric device based on the CISS effect to detect DNA hybridization using a hybrid quantum dot (QD)-DNA monolayer on a ferromagnetic (FM) Ni/Au thin film for the first time. Using spin as a detection tool, the current research considers the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) phenomenon. After injecting a spin current into the QD-DNA system with opposite polarities (up and down), the impedimetric device revealed a large differential change in the charge-transfer resistance (ΔR_ct) of ∼100 ohms for both spins. Nearly, a threefold increase in the ΔR_ct value to ∼270 ohms is observed when light with a wavelength of 532 nm is illuminated on the sample, owing to the amplified CISS effect. The yield of spin polarization as extracted from the Nyquist plot increases by a factor of more than 2 when exposed to light, going from 6% in the dark to 13% in the light. The impact of light on the CISS effect was further corroborated by the observation of the spin-dependent asymmetric quenching of photoluminescence (PL) in the same hybrid system. These observations are absent in the case of a noncomplementary QD-DNA system due to the absence of a helical structure in DNA. Based on this, we develop a spin-based DNA hybridization sensor and achieve a limit of detection of 10 fM. These findings open a practical path for the development of spin-based next-generation impedimetric DNA sensors and point-of-care devices.

Magnetic Field Tuning Ionic Current Generated by Chiromagnetic Nanofilms

The realization of chiral magnetic effect by macroscopically manipulating quantum states of chiral matter under the magnetic field makes a future for information transmission, memory storage, magnetic cooling materials etc., while the microscopic tiny signal differences of at the interface electrons are laborious to be discerned. Here, chiromagnetic iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanofilms were successfully prepared by modulating the magnetic and electrical transition dipoles and combined with confined ion transport, enabling magnetic field-tunable ionic currents with markedly ∼7.91-fold higher for l-tartaric acid (TA)-modified Fe₃O₄ nanofilms than that by d-TA. The apparent amplification results from the charge redistribution at the ferromagnetic-organic interface under the influence of the chiral magnetic effect, resulting in a significant potential difference across the nanofilms that drive ion transport in the confined environment. This strategy, on the one hand, makes it possible to efficiently characterize the electronic microimbalance state in chiral substances induced by the magnetic field and, on the other hand realizes the discrimination and highly sensitive quantitative detection of chiral drug enantiomers, which give insights for the in-depth understanding of chiral magnetic effects and efficient enantiomeric recognition.

A Chirality-Based Quantum Leap

There is increasing interest in the study of chiral degrees of freedom occurring in matter and in electromagnetic fields. Opportunities in quantum sciences will likely exploit two main areas that are the focus of this Review: (1) recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in chiral molecules and engineered nanomaterials and (2) rapidly evolving nanophotonic strategies designed to amplify chiral light-matter interactions. On the one hand, the CISS effect underpins the observation that charge transport through nanoscopic chiral structures favors a particular electronic spin orientation, resulting in large room-temperature spin polarizations. Observations of the CISS effect suggest opportunities for spin control and for the design and fabrication of room-temperature quantum devices from the bottom up, with atomic-scale precision and molecular modularity. On the other hand, chiral-optical effects that depend on both spin- and orbital-angular momentum of photons could offer key advantages in all-optical and quantum information technologies. In particular, amplification of these chiral light-matter interactions using rationally designed plasmonic and dielectric nanomaterials provide approaches to manipulate light intensity, polarization, and phase in confined nanoscale geometries. Any technology that relies on optimal charge transport, or optical control and readout, including quantum devices for logic, sensing, and storage, may benefit from chiral quantum properties. These properties can be theoretically and experimentally investigated from a quantum information perspective, which has not yet been fully developed. There are uncharted implications for the quantum sciences once chiral couplings can be engineered to control the storage, transduction, and manipulation of quantum information. This forward-looking Review provides a survey of the experimental and theoretical fundamentals of chiral-influenced quantum effects and presents a vision for their possible future roles in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

Enhanced Photocatalytic hydrolysis performance of titanium disulfide nanosheets by chiral molecules loaded

The photoelectrochemical (PEC) water decomposition is a promising method to produce hydrogen from water. In order to improve the water decomposition efficiency of the PEC process, it is necessary to inhibit the generation of H 2 O 2  byproducts and reduce the overpotential required by cheap catalysts and a high current density. Studies have shown that coating the electrode with chiral molecules or chiral films can increase the hydrogen production and reduce the generation of H 2 O 2  byproducts. This is interpreted as the result of a chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, which induces a spin correlation between the electrons that are transferred to the anode. Here, we report the adsorption of chiral molecules onto titanium disulfide nanosheets. Firstly, titanium disulfide nanosheets were synthesized via thermal injection and then dispersed through ultrasonic crushing. This strategy combines the CISS effect with the plasma effect caused by the narrow bandgap of two-dimensional sulfur compounds to promote the PEC water decomposition with a high current density.

Quantification of the Effect of an External Magnetic Field on Water Oxidation with Cobalt Oxide Anodes

Here, we quantify the effect of an external magnetic field (β) on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for a cobalt oxide|fluorine-doped tin oxide coated glass (CoO_x|FTO) anode. A bespoke apparatus enables us to precisely determine the relationship between magnetic flux density (β) and OER activity at the surface of a CoO_x|FTO anode. The apparatus includes a strong NdFeB magnet (β_max = 450 ± 1 mT) capable of producing a magnetic field of 371 ± 1 mT at the surface of the anode. The distance between the magnet and the anode surface is controlled by a linear actuator, enabling submillimeter distance positioning of the magnet relative to the anode surface. We couple this apparatus with a finite element analysis magnetic model that was validated by Hall probe measurements to determine the value of β at the anode surface. At the largest tested magnetic field strength of β = 371 ± 1 mT, a 4.7% increase in current at 1.5 V vs the normal hydrogen electrode (NHE) and a change in the Tafel slope of 14.5 mV/dec were observed. We demonstrate through a series of OER measurements at sequential values of β that the enhancement consists of two distinct regions. The possible use of this effect to improve the energy efficiency of commercial water electrolyzers is discussed, and major challenges pertaining to the accurate measurement of the phenomenon are demonstrated.

Spin Fano Resonances in Chiral Molecules: An Alternative Mechanism for the CISS Effect and Experimental Implications

Experiments on spin transport through a chiral molecule demonstrated the attainment of significant spin polarization, demanding a theoretical explanation. We report the emergence of spin Fano resonances as a mechanism in the chiral-induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect associated with transport through a chiral polyacetylene molecule. Initializing electrons through optical excitation, we derive the Fano resonance formula for the spin polarization. Computations reveal that quasidegeneracy is common in this complex molecular system. A remarkable phenomenon is the generation of pronounced spin Fano resonances due to the contributions of two near-degeneracy states. We also find that the Fano resonance width increases linearly with the coupling strength between the molecule and the lead. Our findings provide another mechanism to explain the experimental observations and lead to new insights into the role of the CISS effect in complex molecules from the perspective of transport and spin polarization resonance, paving the way for chiral molecule-based spintronics applications.

Spin selectivity in chiral metal-halide semiconductors

Controlling the spin states of freedom represents a significant challenge for the next-generation optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Chiral metal-halide semiconductors (MHS) have recently emerged as an important class of materials for spin-dependent photonic and electronic applications. In this Minireview, we first discussed the chemical and structural diversity of chiral MHS, highlighting the chirality formation mechanism. We then provided our current understanding on the spin-sensitive photophysical and transport process with a focus on how chirality enables the spin selectivity in chiral MHS. We summarized recent progress on the experimental demonstration of spin control in various photonic and spintronic devices. Finally, we discussed ongoing challenges and opportunities associated with chiral MHS.

Optically active porous hybrid particles constructed by alkynylated cellulose nanocrystals, helical substituted polyacetylene, and inorganic silica for enantio-differentiating towards naproxen

This article reports on a novel type of ternary chiral porous hybrid particles (TCPHPs) constructed by alkynylated cellulose nanocrystals (A-CNCs), helical substituted polyacetylene, and inorganic silica. The resulting TCPHPs combine the respective advantages of the three components. A-CNCs serve as stabilizer, co-monomer, and chiral source simultaneously and transfer their chirality to the resulting helical substituted polyacetylenes in the course of copolymerization with achiral acetylenic monomer following "sergeants and soldiers rule". Helical substituted polyacetylenes form chiral helical structures and thus endow TCPHPs with the anticipated optical activity. Inorganic silica constitutes the rigid framework and is covalently bonded with the organic components through hydrolysis of Si-O-Et groups. Phase separation between the organic and inorganic components renders TCPHPs with abundant pores. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images confirm the formation of spherical particles with porous structures. Circular dichroism spectra demonstrate the optical activity of the chiral hybrid particles. The as-prepared TCPHPs exhibit capacity for enantio-differentiating performance towards chiral naproxen.

Molecular Semiconductors for Logic Operations: Dead-End or Bright Future?

The field of organic electronics has been prolific in the last couple of years, leading to the design and synthesis of several molecular semiconductors presenting a mobility in excess of 10 cm² V^-1 s^-1 . However, it is also started to recently falter, as a result of doubtful mobility extractions and reduced industrial interest. This critical review addresses the community of chemists and materials scientists to share with it a critical analysis of the best performing molecular semiconductors and of the inherent charge transport physics that takes place in them. The goal is to inspire chemists and materials scientists and to give them hope that the field of molecular semiconductors for logic operations is not engaged into a dead end. To the contrary, it offers plenty of research opportunities in materials chemistry.

Electron Transfer Methods in Open Systems

Utilization of electron transfer methods for description of quantum transport is popular due to simplicity of the formulation and its ability to account for basic physics of electron exchange between the system and baths. At the same time, the necessity to go beyond simple golden rule-type expressions for rates was indicated in the literature and ad hoc formulations were proposed. Similarly, kinetic schemes for quantum transport beyond the usual second-order Lindblad/Redfield considerations were discussed. Here we utilize recently introduced the nonequilibrium Hubbard Green's function diagrammatic technique to analyze the construction of rates in open systems. We show that previous considerations for rates of second and fourth order can be obtained as a particular case of zero- and second-order Green's function diagrammatic series with bare diagrams. We discuss limitations of previous considerations, stress advantages of the Hubbard Green's function approach in constructing the rates, and indicate that standard dressing of the diagrams is a natural way to account for additional baths/degrees of freedom in the formulation of generalized expressions for the rates.

Theory of Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity

A general theory of the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect is presented. It is based on the fact that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling is small, a few meV, for the light atoms, which make up typical chiral molecules in experiments. We present a theorem based on the Onsager reciprocal principle, which states that the CISS effect vanishes when thermally averaging over all electron states. This zero result is avoided by the very nonthermal character of the incoming optically generated electrons in experimental realizations. Despite the small SO-coupling, the presence of accidental degeneracies in the molecular spectrum yields a sizable spin polarization. The CISS effect in the presence of magnetic leads is special. We prove that, in a situation with one magnetic lead, the other lead will become magnetized. This results from the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling in the chiral molecule and the magnetized lead. Numerical calculations for realistic chiral molecules confirm the theory.

Spin-Exciton Delocalization Enhancement in Multilayer Chiral Linker/Quantum Dot Structures

The control of complex devices on the nanoscale is challenging. The development of nanoparticles, such as quantum dots, that serve as "artificial atoms" enables the manipulation of energy levels at the nanoscale. Using quantum dots and wet chemistry, multilayer structures with unique coupling properties can be realized. The coupling of such quantum dots is essential for several applications, such as parallel computing. Earlier work showed enhancement of the delocalization using covalent bonds and short linkers. Here, we demonstrate a way to achieve better coupling using helical chiral molecules that exhibit long spin-wave function delocalization. The delocalization is controlled by manipulation of the spin state using polarized light.

Spin Selectivity in Photoinduced Charge-Transfer Mediated by Chiral Molecules

Optical control and readout of electron spin and spin currents in thin films and nanostructures have remained attractive yet challenging goals for emerging technologies designed for applications in information processing and storage. Recent advances in room-temperature spin polarization using nanometric chiral molecular assemblies suggest that chemically modified surfaces or interfaces can be used for optical spin conversion by exploiting photoinduced charge separation and injection from well-coupled organic chromophores or quantum dots. Using light to drive photoexcited charge-transfer processes mediated by molecules with central or helical chirality enables indirect measurements of spin polarization attributed to the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect and of the efficiency of spin-dependent electron transfer relative to competitive relaxation pathways. Herein, we highlight recent approaches used to detect and to analyze spin selectivity in photoinduced charge transfer including spin-transfer torque for local magnetization, nanoscale charge separation and polarization, and soft ferromagnetic substrate magnetization- and chirality-dependent photoluminescence. Building on these methods through systematic investigation of molecular and environmental parameters that influence spin filtering should elucidate means to manipulate electron spins and photoexcited states for room-temperature optoelectronic and photospintronic applications.

Spin-Dependent Ionization of Chiral Molecular Films

Spin selectivity in photo-emission from ferromagnetic substrates functionalized with chiral organic films was analyzed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy at room temperature. Using radiation with photon energy greater than the ionization potential of the adsorbed molecules, photoelectrons were collected that originated from both underlying ferromagnetic substrates and the organic films, with kinetic energies in the range of ca. 0-18 eV. We investigated chiral organic films composed of self-assembled monolayers of α-helical peptides and electrostatically adsorbed films of the protein, bovine serum albumin, with different α-helix and β-sheet contents. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectral widths were found to depend on substrate magnetization orientation and polarization, which we attribute to helicity-dependent molecular ionization cross sections arising from photoelectron impact, possibly resulting in spin-polarized holes. These interactions between spin-polarized photoelectrons and chiral molecules are physically manifested as differences in the measured photoionization energies of the chiral molecular films. Substrate magnetization-dependent ionization energies and work function values were deconvoluted using surface charge neutralization techniques, permitting the measurement of relative spin-dependent energy barriers to transmission through chiral organic films.

Nanoscale defolding influence of polypeptides in the charge-transfer process through an organic-inorganic nanohybrid system

A biologically important polypeptide [with an alternate sequence of alanine (ALA) and 2-aminobutyric acid (AiB)] is used as a linker molecule to investigate the charge-transfer phenomenon between CdSe nanoparticle (NP) (diameter ∼6-7 nm) assemblies and gold (Au) substrates. The (ALA-AiB)n polypeptides, with varying chain lengths n = 5, 8, 11, were attached to the surface to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) through a thiol group located either at the N-terminal or C-terminal of the sequence. Temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed anomalous behavior in the quenching regime of CdSe NPs in the 237 K to 290 K region. In principle, the fluorescence intensity of any fluorophore decreases with a gradual increase in temperature, due to dominating non-radiative relaxation over radiative relaxation. PL spectral intensity follows this general trend from 77 K to 237 K for all chain lengths. For chain length n > 5 (n = 5 showed a kink, but the extent of the kink is negligible in comparison with n > 5) polypeptide-based monolayers, there is a sudden increase in fluorescence intensity above 237 K. This sudden increase is probed using molecular dynamics simulations which reveals that this unprecedented behavior arises due to interchain polypeptide interactions. An insertion of an alkyl chain with an almost similar length of peptide along with polypeptide (in a 3 : 1 ratio, in terms of concentration) diminishes the interchain polypeptide hydrogen-bonding interactions and manifests the normal trend of PL spectra.

Enhancing low-field magnetoresistance in magnetite nanoparticles via zinc substitution

Zn-doping facilitates the alignment of magnetization direction of sub-10 nm Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and enhances room temperature low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR).

Bacteriorhodopsin based non-magnetic spin filters for biomolecular spintronics

We discuss spin injection and spin valves, which are based on organic and biomolecules, that offer the possibility to overcome some of the limitations of solid-state devices, which are based on ferromagnetic metal electrodes.

Electrochemistry of Metalloproteins Attached through Functional Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gold and Ferromagnetic Electrodes

We report the experimental results of a study of the electron-transfer processes of redox-active metalloproteins bound to mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on magnetic (nickel or ultrathin gold-coated nickel) or nonmagnetic (gold) electrodes. Metalloproteins, such as hemoglobin (Hb), Cytochrome C (Cyt C), and Cyt C oxidase, are attached through electrostatic interactions to the free carboxylate or imidazole groups present in the mixed SAMs. The formation of both mixed SAMs and SAM/metalloprotein heterostructures were confirmed by using advanced surface analysis techniques, such as polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and aqueous contact angle measurements. Electrochemical measurements indicated a stronger electronic coupling between Hb and Cyt C oxidase and the mixed-SAM-coated gold or gold-coated-nickel electrodes, whereas a weaker coupling was found between the protein and the pure nickel electrode. Surface coverage and the electron-transfer rate constant were estimated from the cyclic voltammetry data.

Analyzing Spin Selectivity in DNA-Mediated Charge Transfer via Fluorescence Microscopy

Understanding spin-selective interactions between electrons and chiral molecules is critical to elucidating the significance of electron spin in biological processes and to assessing the potential of chiral assemblies for organic spintronics applications. Here, we use fluorescence microscopy to visualize the effects of spin-dependent charge transport in self-assembled monolayers of double-stranded DNA on ferromagnetic substrates. Patterned DNA arrays provide background regions for every measurement to enable quantification of substrate magnetization-dependent fluorescence due to the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect. Fluorescence quenching of photoexcited dye molecules bound within DNA duplexes is dependent upon the rate of charge separation/recombination upon photoexcitation and the efficiency of DNA-mediated charge transfer to the surface. The latter process is modulated using an external magnetic field to switch the magnetization orientation of the underlying ferromagnetic substrates. We discuss our results in the context of the current literature on the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect across various systems.

Fabrication of Photomagnetic Carbon Surfaces via Redox Assembly

3-Aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) and the complex Ru(bpy)2(phendione)2+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, phendione = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) were found to be useful building blocks for preparing photomagnetic carbon surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) showed that when APBA was diazotized in acidic sodium nitrite solutions and cathodically reduced with highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrodes, nanoscale films formed on the electrodes. The resulting HOPG had strong affinities for phendione and Ru(bpy)2(phendione)2+ as the electrodes were biased in the presence of them, respectively, with voltages more negative than the cathodic peak potentials for phendione/phendiol and Ru(bpy)2(phendione)2+/Ru(bpy)2(phendiol)2+ (phendiol = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diol). However, if APBA was excluded, the affinities did not exist. Boronate ester formation featured prominently in these intermolecular interactions. The average increments in the HOPG surface roughness contributed by APBA and Ru(bpy)2(phendione)2+ were roughly 1 : 2, suggesting that the reaction stoichiometry between APBA and Ru(bpy)2(phendione)2+ be 1 : 1. Ru(bpy)2(phendione)2+ could also be grafted to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under conditions similar to those for the HOPG using ascorbate as sacrificial donor. The resulting CNTs and HOPG exhibited photomagnetism when exposed to the 473 nm light. The ruthenium complex was shown to be a room-temperature photomagnetism precursor, and APBA was shown to be an effective molecular bridge for the complex and carbon substrates.

Spin-Dependent Transport through Chiral Molecules Studied by Spin-Dependent Electrochemistry

Molecular spintronics (spin + electronics), which aims to exploit both the spin degree of freedom and the electron charge in molecular devices, has recently received massive attention. Our recent experiments on molecular spintronics employ chiral molecules which have the unexpected property of acting as spin filters, by way of an effect we call “chiral-induced spin selectivity” (CISS). In this Account, we discuss new types of spin-dependent electrochemistry measurements and their use to probe the spin-dependent charge transport properties of nonmagnetic chiral conductive polymers and biomolecules, such as oligopeptides, L/D cysteine, cytochrome c, bacteriorhodopsin (bR), and oligopeptide-CdSe nanoparticles (NPs) hybrid structures. Spin-dependent electrochemical measurements were carried out by employing ferromagnetic electrodes modified with chiral molecules used as the working electrode. Redox probes were used either in solution or when directly attached to the ferromagnetic electrodes. During the electrochemical measurements, the ferromagnetic electrode was magnetized either with its magnetic moment pointing “UP” or “DOWN” using a permanent magnet (H = 0.5 T), placed underneath the chemically modified ferromagnetic electrodes. The spin polarization of the current was found to be in the range of 5–30%, even in the case of small chiral molecules. Chiral films of the l- and d-cysteine tethered with a redox-active dye, toludin blue O, show spin polarizarion that depends on the chirality. Because the nickel electrodes are susceptible to corrosion, we explored the effect of coating them with a thin gold overlayer. The effect of the gold layer on the spin polarization of the electrons ejected from the electrode was investigated. In addition, the role of the structure of the protein on the spin selective transport was also studied as a function of bias voltage and the effect of protein denaturation was revealed. In addition to “dark” measurements, we also describe photoelectrochemical measurements in which light is used to affect the spin selective electron transport through the chiral molecules. We describe how the excitation of a chromophore (such as CdSe nanoparticles), which is attached to a chiral working electrode, can flip the preferred spin orientation of the photocurrent, when measured under the identical conditions. Thus, chirality-induced spin polarization, when combined with light and magnetic field effects, opens new avenues for the study of the spin transport properties of chiral molecules and biomolecules and for creating new types of spintronic devices in which light and molecular chirality provide new functions and properties.
