Molecular Electronics: Creating and Bridging Molecular Junctions and Promoting Its Commercialization

Molecular electronics is driven by the dream of expanding Moore's law to the molecular level for next-generation electronics through incorporating individual or ensemble molecules into electronic circuits. For nearly 50 years, numerous efforts have been made to explore the intrinsic properties of molecules and develop diverse fascinating molecular electronic devices with the desired functionalities. The flourishing of molecular electronics is inseparable from the development of various elegant methodologies for creating nanogap electrodes and bridging the nanogap with molecules. This review first focuses on the techniques for making lateral and vertical nanogap electrodes by breaking, narrowing, and fixed modes, and highlights their capabilities, applications, merits, and shortcomings. After summarizing the approaches of growing single molecules or molecular layers on the electrodes, the methods of constructing a complete molecular circuit are comprehensively grouped into three categories: 1) directly bridging one-molecule-electrode component with another electrode, 2) physically bridging two-molecule-electrode components, and 3) chemically bridging two-molecule-electrode components. Finally, the current state of molecular circuit integration and commercialization is discussed and perspectives are provided, hoping to encourage the community to accelerate the realization of fully scalable molecular electronics for a new era of integrated microsystems and applications.

Electron Irradiation Driven Nanohands for Sequential Origami

Sequence plays an important role in self-assembly of 3D complex structures, particularly for those with overlap, intersection, and asymmetry. However, it remains challenging to program the sequence of self-assembly, resulting in geometric and topological constrains. In this work, a nanoscale, programmable, self-assembly technique is reported, which uses electron irradiation as "hands" to manipulate the motion of nanostructures with the desired order. By assigning each single assembly step in a particular order, localized motion can be selectively triggered with perfect timing, making a component accurately integrate into the complex 3D structure without disturbing other parts of the assembly process. The features of localized motion, real-time monitoring, and surface patterning open the possibility for the further innovation of nanomachines, nanoscale test platforms, and advanced optical devices.

Rectification ratio and direction controlled by temperature in copper phthalocyanine ensemble molecular diodes

Organic diodes and molecular rectifiers are fundamental electronic devices that share one common feature: current rectification ability. Since both present distinct spatial dimensions and working principles, the rectification of organic diodes is usually achieved by interface engineering, while changes in molecular structures commonly control the molecular rectifiers' features. Here, we report on the first observation of temperature-driven inversion of the rectification direction (IRD) in ensemble molecular diodes (EMDs) prepared in a vertical stack configuration. The EMDs are composed of 20 nm thick molecular ensembles of copper phthalocyanine in close contact with one of its fluorinated derivatives. The material interface was found to be responsible for modifying the junction's conduction mechanisms from nearly activationless transport to Poole-Frenkel emission and phonon-assisted tunneling. In this context, the current rectification was found to be dependent on the interplay of such distinct charge transport mechanisms. The temperature has played a crucial role in each charge transport transition, which we have investigated via electrical measurements and band diagram analysis, thus providing the fundamentals on the IRD occurrence. Our findings represent an important step towards simple and rational control of rectification in carbon-based electronic nanodevices.

3D Self-Assembled Microelectronic Devices: Concepts, Materials, Applications

Modern microelectronic systems and their components are essentially 3D devices that have become smaller and lighter in order to improve performance and reduce costs. To maintain this trend, novel materials and technologies are required that provide more structural freedom in 3D over conventional microelectronics, as well as easier parallel fabrication routes while maintaining compatability with existing manufacturing methods. Self-assembly of initially planar membranes into complex 3D architectures offers a wealth of opportunities to accommodate thin-film microelectronic functionalities in devices and systems possessing improved performance and higher integration density. Existing work in this field, with a focus on components constructed from 3D self-assembly, is reviewed, and an outlook on their application potential in tomorrow's microelectronics world is provided.

When Flexible Organic Field-Effect Transistors Meet Biomimetics: A Prospective View of the Internet of Things

The emergence of flexible organic electronics that span the fields of physics and biomimetics creates the possibility for increasingly simple and intelligent products for use in everyday life. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), with their inherent flexibility, light weight, and biocompatibility, have shown great promise in the field of biomimicry. By applying such biomimetic OFETs for the internet of things (IoT) makes it possible to imagine novel products and use cases for the future. Recent advances in flexible OFETs and their applications in biomimetic systems are reviewed. Strategies to achieve flexible OFETs are individually discussed and recent progress in biomimetic sensory systems and nervous systems is reviewed in detail. OFETs are revealed to be one of the best systems for mimicking sensory and nervous systems. Additionally, a brief discussion of information storage based on OFETs is presented. Finally, a personal view of the utilization of biomimetic OFETs in the IoT and future challenges in this research area are provided.

Advanced Soft Materials, Sensor Integrations, and Applications of Wearable Flexible Hybrid Electronics in Healthcare, Energy, and Environment

Recent advances in soft materials and system integration technologies have provided a unique opportunity to design various types of wearable flexible hybrid electronics (WFHE) for advanced human healthcare and human-machine interfaces. The hybrid integration of soft and biocompatible materials with miniaturized wireless wearable systems is undoubtedly an attractive prospect in the sense that the successful device performance requires high degrees of mechanical flexibility, sensing capability, and user-friendly simplicity. Here, the most up-to-date materials, sensors, and system-packaging technologies to develop advanced WFHE are provided. Details of mechanical, electrical, physicochemical, and biocompatible properties are discussed with integrated sensor applications in healthcare, energy, and environment. In addition, limitations of the current materials are discussed, as well as key challenges and the future direction of WFHE. Collectively, an all-inclusive review of the newly developed WFHE along with a summary of imperative requirements of material properties, sensor capabilities, electronics performance, and skin integrations is provided.

Ambipolar Resistive Switching in an Ultrathin Surface-Supported Metal-Organic Framework Vertical Heterojunction

Memristors (MRs) are considered promising devices with the enormous potential to replace complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, which approaches the scale limit. Efforts to fabricate MRs-based hybrid materials may result in suitable operating parameters coupled to high mechanical flexibility and low cost. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) arise as a favorable candidate to cover such demands. The step-by-step growth of MOFs structures on functionalized surfaces, called surface-supported metal-organic frameworks (SURMOFs), opens the possibility for designing new applications in strategic fields such as electronics, optoelectronics, and energy harvesting. However, considering the MRs architecture, the typical high porosity of these hybrid materials may lead to short-circuited devices easily. In this sense, here, it is reported for the first time the integration of SURMOF films in rolled-up scalable-functional devices. A freestanding metallic nanomembrane provides a robust and self-adjusted top mechanical contact on the SURMOF layer. The electrical characterization reveals an ambipolar resistive switching mediated by the humidity level with low-power consumption. The electronic properties are investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the device concept is versatile, compatible with the current parallelism demands of integration, and transcends the challenge in contacting SURMOF films for scalable-functional devices.

Edge-driven nanomembrane-based vertical organic transistors showing a multi-sensing capability

The effective utilization of vertical organic transistors in high current density applications demands further reduction of channel length (given by the thickness of the organic semiconducting layer and typically reported in the 100 nm range) along with the optimization of the source electrode structure. Here we present a viable solution by applying rolled-up metallic nanomembranes as the drain-electrode (which enables the incorporation of few nanometer-thick semiconductor layers) and by lithographically patterning the source-electrode. Our vertical organic transistors operate at ultra-low voltages and demonstrate high current densities (~0.5 A cm⁻²) that are found to depend directly on the number of source edges, provided the source perforation gap is wider than 250 nm. We anticipate that further optimization of device structure can yield higher current densities (~10 A cm⁻²). The use of rolled-up drain-electrode also enables sensing of humidity and light which highlights the potential of these devices to advance next-generation sensing technologies.

For vertical organic field-effect transistors (VOFETs) to reach their potential for display and sensor applications, further improvements to fabrication methods are required. Here, the authors report microfabricated VOFETs featuring rolled-up metallic nanomembrane electrodes and displaying multi-sensing capability.

Cyber-Physiochemical Interfaces

Living things rely on various physical, chemical, and biological interfaces, e.g., somatosensation, olfactory/gustatory perception, and nervous system response. They help organisms to perceive the world, adapt to their surroundings, and maintain internal and external balance. Interfacial information exchanges are complicated but efficient, delicate but precise, and multimodal but unisonous, which has driven researchers to study the science of such interfaces and develop techniques with potential applications in health monitoring, smart robotics, future wearable devices, and cyber physical/human systems. To understand better the issues in these interfaces, a cyber-physiochemical interface (CPI) that is capable of extracting biophysical and biochemical signals, and closely relating them to electronic, communication, and computing technology, to provide the core for aforementioned applications, is proposed. The scientific and technical progress in CPI is summarized, and the challenges to and strategies for building stable interfaces, including materials, sensor development, system integration, and data processing techniques are discussed. It is hoped that this will result in an unprecedented multi-disciplinary network of scientific collaboration in CPI to explore much uncharted territory for progress, providing technical inspiration-to the development of the next-generation personal healthcare technology, smart sports-technology, adaptive prosthetics and augmentation of human capability, etc.

Thermal-controlled releasing and assembling of functional nanomembranes through polymer pyrolysis

Pyrolysis, which involves thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures, has been commonly applied in the chemical industry. Here we explored the pyrolysis process for 3D nanofabrication. By strain engineering of nanomembranes on a thermal responsive polymer as the sacrificial layer, we demonstrated that diverse 3D rolled-up microstructures with different functions could be achieved without any additional solution and drying process. We carefully studied the effect of molecular weight of the polymer in the pyrolysis process and identified that the rapid breakdown of molecular backbone to a monomer is the key for nanomembrane releasing and rolling. Preferential rolling direction and corresponding dynamics were studied by analyzing the real-time video of the rolling process. We further demonstrated the versatile functions of the fabricated 3D structures as catalytic microengines and optical resonators. The simple fabrication methodology developed here may have great potential in producing functional 3D tubular micro-/nanostructures.

Magnetic origami creates high performance micro devices

Self-assembly of two-dimensional patterned nanomembranes into three-dimensional micro-architectures has been considered a powerful approach for parallel and scalable manufacturing of the next generation of micro-electronic devices. However, the formation pathway towards the final geometry into which two-dimensional nanomembranes can transform depends on many available degrees of freedom and is plagued by structural inaccuracies. Especially for high-aspect-ratio nanomembranes, the potential energy landscape gives way to a manifold of complex pathways towards misassembly. Therefore, the self-assembly yield and device quality remain low and cannot compete with state-of-the art technologies. Here we present an alternative approach for the assembly of high-aspect-ratio nanomembranes into microelectronic devices with unprecedented control by remotely programming their assembly behavior under the influence of external magnetic fields. This form of magnetic Origami creates micro energy storage devices with excellent performance and high yield unleashing the full potential of magnetic field assisted assembly for on-chip manufacturing processes.

Despite the potential of self-assembly strategies for fabricating 3D micro-electronic devices, technological limitations prohibit widespread industrial adoption. Here, the authors report the magnetic field-assisted Origami-based assembly of high-performance devices with high yield.

Nanoscale Variable-Area Electronic Devices: Contact Mechanics and Hypersensitive Pressure Application

Nanomembranes (NMs) are freestanding structures with few-nanometer thickness and lateral dimensions up to the microscale. In nanoelectronics, NMs have been used to promote reliable electrical contacts with distinct nanomaterials, such as molecules, quantum dots, and nanowires, as well as to support the comprehension of the condensed matter down to the nanoscale. Here, we propose a tunable device architecture that is capable of deterministically changing both the contact geometry and the current injection in nanoscale electronic junctions. The device is based on a hybrid arrangement that joins metallic NMs and molecular ensembles, resulting in a versatile, mechanically compliant element. Such a feature allows the devices to accommodate a mechanical stimulus applied over the top electrodes, enlarging the junctions' active area without compromising the molecules. A model derived from the Hertzian mechanics is employed to correlate the contact dynamics with the electronic transport in these novel devices denominated as variable-area transport junctions (VATJs). As a proof of concept, we propose a direct application of the VATJs as compression gauges envisioning the development of hypersensitive pressure pixels. Regarding sensitivity (∼480 kPa^-1), the VATJ-based transducers constitute a breakthrough in nanoelectronics, with the prospect of carrying its sister-field of molecular electronics out of the laboratory via integrative, hybrid organic/inorganic nanotechnology.
