Diruthenium Complexes with Bridging Diethynyl Polyaromatic Ligands: Synthesis, Spectroelectrochemistry, and Theoretical Calculations

Molecular engineering of thiophene- and pyrrole-fused core arylamine systems: Tuning redox properties, NIR spectral responsiveness and bacterial imaging applications

The thiophene- and pyrrole-fused heterocyclic compounds have garnered significant interest for their distinctive electron-rich characteristics and notable optoelectronic properties. However, the construction of high-performance systems within this class is of great challenge. Herein, we develop a series of novel dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d] pyrrole (DTP) and tetrathieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d] pyrrole (TTP) bridged arylamine compounds (DTP-C4, DTP-C12, DTP-C4-Fc, TTP-C4-OMe, TTP-C4, and TTP-C12) with varying carbon chain lengths. The pertinent experimental results reveal that this series of compounds undergo completely reversible multistep redox processes. Notably, TTP-bridged compounds TTP-C4 and TTP-C12 exhibit impressive multistep near-infrared (NIR) absorption alterations with notable color changes and electroluminescent behaviors, which are mainly attributed to the charge transfer transitions from terminal arylamine units to central bridges, as supported by theoretical calculations. Additionally, compound DTP-C4 demonstrates the ability to visually identify gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, this work suggests the promising electroresponsive nature of compounds TTP-C4 and TTP-C12, positioning them as excellent materials for various applications. It also provides a facile approach to constructing high-performance multifunctional luminescent materials, particularly those with strong and long-wavelength NIR absorption capabilities.

Pyrene fluorescence in 2,7-di(4-phenylethynyl)pyrene-bridged bis(alkenylruthenium) complexes

Complexes PyrDPE-RuCl and PyrDPE-Ruacac with a π-extended 2,7-di(4-phenylethynyl)pyrene linker undergo simultaneous one-electron oxidations of their {Ru}-styryl entities. The absence of an intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) band at intermediate stages, where the mixed-valent, singly oxidized radical cation is present, and spin density confinement to the terminal styryl ruthenium site(s) are tokens of a lack of electronic coupling between the {Ru} entities across the π-conjugated linker. The close similarity of the linker-based π → π* bands in the complexes and the free ligand and their insensitivity towards oxidations at the terminal sites indicate that the central pyrenyl fluorophore is electronically decoupled from the electron-rich {Ru}-styryl termini. As a consequence, the complexes offer stable pyrene-based fluorescence emissions at 77 K, which are red-shifted from that of the linker.

Functionalised organometallic photoswitches containing dihydropyrene units

Functionalising organic molecular photoswitches with metal complexes has been shown to alter and enhance their switching states. These organometallic photoswitches provide a promising basis for novel smart molecular materials and molecular electronic devices. We have detailed the synthesis and characterisation of mono- and bimetallic half-sandwich ruthenium and iron complexes functionalised with alkynyl dihydropyrenes (DHP). Their electronic and photophysical properties were determined by the use of chemical, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The introduction of the metal alkynyl moiety allows access to additional redox and protonation states not accessible by the DHP alone. An additional metal alkynyl moiety inhibits observable photochromic switching. Analysis of the NIR and IR bands in the mixed valence complexes suggests there is a high degree of charge delocalisation across the DHP.

Enabling Valence Delocalization in Iron(III) Macrocyclic Complexes through Ring Unsaturation

The complexes [FeIII(HMC)(C2DMA)2]CF3SO3 ([2]OTf) and [FeIII(HMTI)(C2Y)2]CF3SO3 ([3a-c]OTf) have been prepared and thoroughly characterized (HMC = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; HMTI = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene; Y = Fc (ferrocenyl, [3a]OTf), 4-(N,N-dimethyl)anilino (DMA, [3b]OTf), or 4-(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)anilino (TPA, [3c]OTf); OTf- = CF3SO3-)). Vibrational and electronic absorption spectroelectrochemical analyses following one-electron oxidation of the ethynyl substituent Y revealed evidence of strong coupling in the resultant mixed valent species for all HMTI-based complexes. However, the analogous mixed valent ion based on [2]OTf appeared to be more localized. Thus, the tetra-imino macrocycle HMTI has enabled significant valence delocalization along the -C2-FeIII-C2- bridge. Electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of [3b]OTf reveal that the π-acidity of HMTI lowers the energy of the FeIII dπ orbitals compared to the purely σ-donating HMC. This observation provides a basis for the interpretation of the macrocycle-dependent valence (de)localization.

Acene Size-Dependent Transition of The Radical Centers From the Metal to The Acene Parts In Monocationic Dinuclear (Diethynylacene)diyl Complexes

Controlling radical localization/delocalization is important for functional materials. The present paper describes synthesis and results of electrochemical, spectroscopic, and theoretical studies of diruthenium (p-diethynylacene)diyl complexes, Me₃ Si-(C≡C)₂ -Ru(dppe)₂ -C≡C-Ar-C≡C-Ru(dppe)₂ -(C≡C)₂ -SiMe₃ (1-6) (dppe: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), and their monocationic radical species ([1]⁺ -[6]⁺ ). The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps can be finely tuned by the acene rings in the bridging ligands installed, as indicated by the absorption maxima of the electronic spectra of 1-6 ranging from the UV region even to the NIR region. The cationic species [1]⁺ -[6]⁺ show two characteristic NIR bands, which are ascribed to the charge resonance (CR) and π-π* transition bands, as revealed by spectroelectrochemistry. Expansion of the acene rings in [1]⁺ -[6]⁺ causes (1) blue shifts of the CR bands and red shifts of the π-π* transition bands and (2) charge localization on the acene parts as evidenced by the ESR, DFT and TD-DFT analyses. Notably, the monocationic complexes of the larger acene derivatives are characterized as the non-classical acene-localized radicals.

Electron-Rich Diruthenium Complexes with π-Extended Alkenyl Ligands and Their F4 TCNQ Charge-Transfer Salts

The synthesis of dinuclear ruthenium alkenyl complexes with {Ru(CO)(Pⁱ Pr₃ )₂ (L)} entities (L=Cl^- in complexes Ru₂ -3 and Ru₂ -7; L=acetylacetonate (acac^- ) in complexes Ru₂ -4 and Ru₂ -8) and with π-conjugated 2,7-divinylphenanthrenediyl (Ru₂ -3, Ru₂ -4) or 5,8-divinylquinoxalinediyl (Ru₂ -7, Ru₂ -8) as bridging ligands are reported. The bridging ligands are laterally π-extended by anellating a pyrene (Ru₂ -7, Ru₂ -8) or a 6,7-benzoquinoxaline (Ru₂ -3, Ru₂ -4) π-perimeter. This was done with the hope that the open π-faces of the electron-rich complexes will foster association with planar electron acceptors via π-stacking. The dinuclear complexes were subjected to cyclic and square-wave voltammetry and were characterized in all accessible redox states by IR, UV/Vis/NIR and, where applicable, by EPR spectroscopy. These studies signified the one-electron oxidized forms of divinylphenylene-bridged complexes Ru₂ -7, Ru₂ -8 as intrinsically delocalized mixed-valent species, and those of complexes Ru₂ -3 and Ru₂ -4 with the longer divinylphenanthrenediyl linker as partially localized on the IR, yet delocalized on the EPR timescale. The more electron-rich acac^- congeners formed non-conductive 1 : 1 charge-transfer (CT) salts on treatment with the F₄ TCNQ electron acceptor. All spectroscopic techniques confirmed the presence of pairs of complex radical cations and F₄ TCNQ^.- radical anions in these CT salts, but produced no firm evidence for the relevance of π-stacking to their formation and properties.

Fusing pyrene and ferrocene into a chiral, redox-active triangle

A macrocycle that integrates three ferrocene-pyrene dyads in a triangular C2-symmetric arrangement is synthesised as a racemate in a simple one-pot approach. Crystal structural analysis reveals two enantiomeric conformers that pack alternatingly via π-π stacking and interconvert dynamically in solution. Electrochemical investigations indicate weak electrostatic interactions between Fc groups upon oxidation to a mixed valence triangle.

Iron vs. ruthenium: syntheses, structures and IR spectroelectrochemical characterisation of half-sandwich Group 8 acetylide complexes

A synthetic ‘trick’ affording complexes [M(CCR)(dppe)Cp′] (M = Fe, Ru) in high purity directly from the reaction vessel is described.

Oxidized divinyl oligoacene-bridged diruthenium complexes: bridged localized radical characters and reduced aromaticity in bridge cores

A series of bimetallic ruthenium vinyl complexes 1-5 bridged by oligoacenes were synthesized and characterized in this study. Comparative cyclic voltammetry results from 1-5 indicated that the first oxidation potential decreased gradually with the extension of conjugate ligands. Upon oxidation to singly oxidized species 1+-5+, rather small ν(CO) changes in the infrared (IR) spectra and the characteristic bands of metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorptions in the near IR (NIR) region predicted via time-dependent DFT calculations suggested that strong bridged ligands participate in redox processes. NIR absorptions were not observed in complexes 4+ and 5+ possibly because of instability in their twisted and noncoplanar geometry. Electron paramagnetic resonance results and spin density distribution demonstrated that the bridged localized degrees of 1+-5+ successively increased with the extension of oligoacene from benzene to tetracene. Further comparative analysis of neutral molecules and monocations to the aromaticity and π-electron density of bridge cores indicated a step-by-step transformation process from an aromatic to quinoidal radical upon oxidation.

Role of Substituents at 3-position of Thienylethynyl Spacer on Electronic Properties in Diruthenium(II) Organometallic Wire-like Complexes

A series of organometallic complexes [Cl(dppe)₂ Ru-C≡C-(3-R-C₄ H₂ S)-C≡C-Ru(dppe)₂ Cl] (3-R-C₄ H₂ S=3-substituted thienyl moiety; R=-H, -C₂ H₅ , -C₃ H₇ , -C₄ H₉ , -C₆ H₁₃ , -OMe, -CN in 5 a-5 g respectively) have been synthesized by systematic variation of 3-substituents at the thienylethynyl bridging unit. The diruthenum(II) wire-like complexes (5 a-5 g) have been achieved by the reaction of thienylethynyl bridging units, HC≡C-(3-R-C₄ H₂ S)-C≡CH (4 a-4 g) with cis-[Ru(dppe)₂ Cl₂ ]. The wire-like diruthenium(II) complexes undergo two consecutive electrochemical oxidation processes in the potential range of 0.0 - 0.8 V. Interestingly, the wave separation between the two redox waves is greatly influenced by the substituents at the 3-position of the thienylethynyl. Thus, the substitution on 3-position of the thienylethynyl bridging unit plays a pivotal role for tuning the electronic properties. To understand the electronic behavior, density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the selected diruthenium wire-like complexes (5 a-5 e) with different alkyl appendages are performed. The theoretical data demonstrate that incorporation of alkyl groups to the thienylethynyl entity leaves unsymmetrical spin densities, thus affecting the electronic properties. The voltammetric features of the other two Ru(II) alkynyl complexes 5 f and 5 g (with -OMe and -CN group respectively) show an apparent dependence on the electronic properties. The electronic properties in the redox conjugate, (5 a⁺ ) with K_c of 3.9×10⁶ are further examined by UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR studies, showing optical responses in NIR region along with changes in "-Ru-C≡C-" vibrational stretching frequency. The origin of the observed electronic transition has been assigned based on time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations.

Electronic Properties of Oxidized Cyclometalated Diiridium Complexes: Spin Delocalization Controlled by the Mutual Position of the Iridium Centers

Four cyclometalated diiridium complexes, with IrCp*Cl (Cp*=η⁵ -C₅ Me₅ ^- ) termini bridged by 1,4- and 1,3-bis(p-tolyliminoethyl)benzene (1, 2), or 1,4- and 1,3-bis(2-pyridyl)benzene (3, 4), were prepared and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (complexes 1, 2, and 4). The two iridium centers in complexes 1 and 3 are thus bound at the central benzene ring in the para-position (trans-Ir2), whereas those in complexes 2 and 4 are in the meta-position (cis-Ir2). Cyclic voltammograms of all four complexes show two consecutive one-electron oxidations. The potential difference between the two anodic steps in 1 and 3 is distinctly larger than that for 2 and 4. The visible-near-infrared (NIR)-short-wave infrared (SWIR) absorption spectra of trans-Ir2 monocations 1⁺ and 3⁺ are markedly different from those of cis-Ir2 monocations 2⁺ and 4⁺ . Notably, strong near-infrared electronic absorption appears only in the spectra of 1⁺ and 3⁺ whereas 2⁺ and 4⁺ absorb only weakly in the NIR-SWIR region. Combined DFT and TD-DFT calculations have revealed that (a) 1⁺ and 3⁺ (the diiridium-benzene trans-isomers) display the highest occupied spin-orbitals (HOSO) and the lowest unoccupied spin-orbital (LUSO) evenly delocalized over both molecule halves, and (b) their electronic absorptions in the NIR-SWIR region are attributed to mixed metal-to-ligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfers (MLCT and LLCT). In contrast, cis-isomers 2⁺ and 4⁺ do not feature this stabilizing π-delocalization but a localized mixed-valence state showing a weak intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) absorption in the SWIR region.

Ferrocenyl-Pyrenes, Ferrocenyl-9,10-Phenanthrenediones, and Ferrocenyl-9,10-Dimethoxyphenanthrenes: Charge-Transfer Studies and SWCNT Functionalization

The synthesis of 1-Fc- (3), 1-Br-6-Fc- (5 a), 2-Br-7-Fc- (7 a), 1,6-Fc₂ - (5 b), 2,7-Fc₂ -pyrene (7 b), 3,6-Fc₂ -9,10-phenanthrenedione (10), and 3,6-Fc₂ -9,10-dimethoxyphenanthrene (12; Fc=Fe(η⁵ -C₅ H₄ )(η⁵ -C₅ H₅ )) is discussed. Of these compounds, 10 and 12 form 1D or 2D coordination polymers in the solid state. (Spectro)Electrochemical studies confirmed reversible Fc/Fc⁺ redox events between -130 and 160 mV. 1,6- and 2,7-Substitution in 5 a (E°'=-130 mV) and 7 a (E°'=50 mV) influences the redox potentials, whereas the ones of 5 b and 7 b (E°'=20 mV) are independent. Compounds 5 b, 7 b, 10, and 12 show single Fc oxidation processes with redox splittings between 70 and 100 mV. UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemistry confirmed a weak electron transfer between Fe^II /Fe^III in mixed-valent [5 b]⁺ and [12]⁺ . DFT calculations showed that 5 b non-covalently interacts with the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) sidewalls as proven by, for example, disentangling experiments. In addition, CV studies of the as-obtained dispersions confirmed exohedral attachment of 5 b at the SWCNTs.

Diruthenium(ii)-capped oligothienylethynyl bridged highly soluble organometallic wires exhibiting long-range electronic coupling

Organometallic molecular wires with π-conjugation along their molecular backbones are of considerable interest for application in molecular-scale electronics. In this regard, thienylethynyl-based π-conjugated oligomers of three, five and seven thienylethynyl units with -C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-H termini have been successfully synthesized through stepwise Pd(0)/Cu(i)-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling. The corresponding highly soluble diruthenium(ii) diacetylide complexes (O1-Ru2, O3-Ru2, O5-Ru2 and O7-Ru2, respectively) have been prepared by the reaction of cis-Ru(dppe)2Cl2 and NaPF6 in DCM with the corresponding rigid rod-like thienylethynyl oligomers with one, three, five and seven thienylethynyl π-conjugated segments containing alkynyl termini (O1, O3, O5 and O7). These Ru(ii)-Cl capped diacetylide complexes have been further functionalized by incorporating a phenylacetynyl moiety to afford [Ru(ii)-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ph]-capped diacetylide organometallic wires (O1-Ru2-Ph, O3-Ru2-Ph, O5-Ru2-Ph and O7-Ru2-Ph). The photophysical properties of the highly soluble thienylethynyl-based oligomers and Ru(ii)-organometallic wires have been explored to understand their electronic properties. Electrochemical studies of the binuclear ruthenium(ii)-alkynyl complexes showed highly interesting results, revealing long-range electrochemical communication between the two remote Ru(ii) termini connected even with five and seven thienylethynyl units. DFT computational studies further support the long range electrochemical communication between the redox active metal termini through heavy participation of the thienylethynyl bridge in the corresponding mono-oxidized mixed valence species of the organometallic wire-like complexes.

Rise of Conjugated Poly-ynes and Poly(Metalla-ynes): From Design Through Synthesis to Structure-Property Relationships and Applications

Conjugated poly-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) constitute an important class of new materials with potential application in various domains of science. The key factors responsible for the diverse usage of these materials is their intriguing and tunable chemical and photophysical properties. This review highlights fascinating advances made in the field of conjugated organic poly-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) incorporating group 4-11 metals. This includes several important aspects of conjugated poly-ynes viz. synthetic protocols, bonding, electronic structure, nature of luminescence, structure-property relationships, diverse applications, and concluding remarks. Furthermore, we delineated the future directions and challenges in this particular area of research.

Anodic electrochemistry of mono- and dinuclear aminophenylferrocene and diphenylaminoferrocene complexes

Two related three-membered series of nonlinear aminophenylferrocene and diphenylaminoferrocene complexes were prepared and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The first series consists of 4-(diphenylamino)phenylferrocene (TPA-Fc, 1a), its dimethoxy-substituted tetraphenylphenylenediamine derivative (M2TPPD-Fc, 1c), and the triphenylamine-bridged bis(ferrocenyl) complex (Fc-TPA-Fc, 1b). The second series involves bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aminoferrocene (M2DPA-Fc, 1d), 4-methoxyphenylaminoferrocene (MPA-Fc) with N-phenyl-appended terminal TPA (1e), and the corresponding bis(MPA-Fc) complex with bridging TPA (1f). The structure of complex 1d was further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Combined investigations, based on anodic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, were conducted to illustrate the influence of the integration of multiple redox-active components on the sequential oxidation of these complexes. The first anodic steps in 1a-1f are localized preferentially on the ferrocenyl units, followed by oxidation of the TPA or TPPD moieties (absent in 1d). Irreversible oxidation of the ferrocene-appended strong donor DPA/MPA units in 1d-1f terminates the anodic series. The one-electron oxidation of the triphenylamine-bridged diferrocenyl (1b) and bis(phenylaminoferrocenyl) (1f) complexes triggers their facile redox disproportionation to dicationic bis(ferrocenium) products.

Multistep Oxidation of Diethynyl Oligophenylamine-Bridged Diruthenium and Diiron Complexes

Homo-dinuclear nonlinear complexes [{M(dppe)Cp*}₂{μ-(-C≡C)₂X}] (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane; Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅; X = triphenylamine (TPA), M = Ru (1a) and Fe (1b); X = N,N,N',N'-tetraphenylphenylene-1,4-diamine (TPPD), M = Ru (2a)) were prepared and characterized by ¹H, ¹³C, and ³¹P NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (1a, 2a). Attempts to prepare the diiron analogue of 2a were not successful. Experimental data obtained from cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR (NIR = near-infrared) spectro-electrochemistry, and very informative IR spectro-electrochemistry in the C≡C stretching region, combined with density functional theory calculations, afford to make an emphasizing assessment of the close association between the metal-ethynyl termini and the oligophenylamine bridge core as well as their respective involvement in sequential one-electron oxidations of these complexes. The anodic behavior of the homo-bimetallic complexes depends strongly both on the metal center and the length of the oligophenylamine bridge core. The poorly separated first two oxidations of diiron complex 1b are localized on the electronically nearly independent Fe termini. In contrast, diruthenium complex 1a exhibits a significantly delocalized character and a marked electronic communication between the ruthenium centers through the diethynyl-TPA bridge. The ruthenium-ethynyl halves in 2a, separated by the doubly extended and more flexible TPPD bridge core, show a lower degree of electronic coupling, resulting in close-lying first two anodic waves and the NIR electronic absorption of [2a]⁺ with an indistinctive intervalence charge transfer character. Finally, the third anodic waves in the voltammetric responses of the homo-bimetallic complexes are associated with the concurrent exclusive oxidation of the TPA or TPPD bridge cores.

Gas-phase conformational preference of the smallest saccharide (glycolaldehyde) and its hydrated complexes with bridged hydrogen bonding

Glycoaldehyde (GA, HOCH₂CHO) is the simplest sugar unit of the carbohydrates and the only sugar to have been detected in interstellar space to date.

Elaborately Tuning Intramolecular Electron Transfer Through Varying Oligoacene Linkers in the Bis(diarylamino) Systems

The research efforts on oligoacene systems are still relatively limited mainly due to the synthetic challenge and the extreme instability of longer acenes. Herein, these two issues have been overcome through elaborative modification and the stable pentacene species has been successfully synthesized. Additionally, a series of bis(diarylamino) compounds linked by variable-length oligoacene bridges ranging from one to five fused rings (benzene (1a), naphthalene (1b), anthracene (1c), tetracene (1d) and pentacene (1e)) have been prepared to probe the effect of the extent of π-conjugation on the electron transfer properties. Compound 1c exhibits a high planarity between the anthracyl bridge and the two nitrogen cores and the molecular packing shows a two-dimensional herringbone characteristic. Combined studies based on electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry demonstrate that (i) the electronic coupling across the oligoacene linkers between two diarylamine termini exponentially decrease with a moderate attenuation constant (β) of 0.14 Å⁻¹ in these length-modulated systems and (ii) the associated radical cations [1a]⁺–[1e]⁺ are classified as the class II Robin–Day mixed-valence systems. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been conducted to gain insight into the nature of electron transfer processes in these oligoacene systems.

Tuning the Electronic Coupling and Electron Transfer in Mo2 Donor-Acceptor Systems by Variation of the Bridge Conformation

Assembling two quadruply bonded dimolybdenum units [Mo2 (DAniF)3 ](+) (DAniF=N,N'-di(p-anisyl)formamidinate) with 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylate and its thiolated derivatives produced three complexes [{Mo2 (DAniF)3 }2 (μ-1,4-O2 CC10 H6 CO2 )], [{Mo2 (DAniF)3 }2 (μ-1,4-OSCC10 H6 COS)], and [{Mo2 (DAniF)3 }2 (μ-1,4-S2 CC10 H6 CS2 )]. In the X-ray structures, the naphthalene bridge deviates from the plane defined by the two Mo-Mo bond vectors with the torsion angle increasing as the chelating atoms of the bridging ligand vary from O to S. The mixed-valent species exhibit intervalence transition absorption bands with high energy and very low intensity. In comparison with the data for the phenylene analogues, the optically determined electronic coupling matrix elements (Hab =258-345 cm(-1) ) are lowered by a factor of two or more, and the electron-transfer rate constants (ket ≈10(11)  s(-1) ) are reduced by about one order of magnitude. These results show that, when the electron-transporting ability of the bridge and electron-donating (electron-accepting) ability of the donor (acceptor) are both variable, the former plays a dominant role in controlling the intramolecular electron transfer. DFT calculations revealed that increasing the torsion angle enlarges the HOMO-LUMO energy gap by elevating the (bridging) ligand-based LUMO energy. Therefore, our experimental results and theoretical analyses verify the superexchange mechanism for electronic coupling and electron transfer.

Asymmetric oxidation of vinyl- and ethynyl terthiophene ligands in triruthenium complexes
