Abstract
α-Metallated ylides have recently been reported to undergo phosphine by CO exchange at the ylidic carbon atom to form isolable ketenyl anions. Systematic studies on the tosyl-substituted yldiides, R3 P=C(M)Ts (M=Li, Na, K), now reveal that carbonylation may lead to a competing metal salt (MTs) elimination. This side-reaction can be controlled by the choice of phosphine, metal cation, solvent and co-ligands, thus enabling the selective isolation of the ketenyl anion [Ts-CCO]M (2-M). Complexation of 2-Na by crown ether or cryptand allowed structure elucidation of the first free ketenyl anion [Ts-CCO]- , which showed an almost linear Ts-C-C linkage indicative for a pronounced ynolate character. However, DFT studies support a high charge at the ketenyl carbon atom, which is reflected in the selective carbon-centered reactivity. Overall, the present study provides important information on the selectivity control of ketenyl anion formation which will be crucial for future applications.

Abstract
A series of N-substituted saccharins namely 2-(1,1-dioxido-3-oxobenzo[d]isothiazol-2(3H)-yl) acetonitrile (2) and (alkyl 1,1-dioxido-3-oxobenzo[d]isothiazol-2(3H)-yl) acetate (3a-g) were synthesized, in moderate to excellent yields, from commercially available starting materials by two different approaches and their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic techniques (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR, and MS). All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory toward IL-6 and TNF-α, antioxidant, as well as their anticancer activities against hepatic cancer cells. In addition, their anti-fungal and antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were tested. All the tested compounds have exhibited excellent (3a, d, e) to moderate anti-inflammatory activity. Additionally, esters (3b, f) and nitrile (2) showed excellent antioxidant activity. Furthermore, ester 3f, with isopropyl ester, exhibited the highest cytotoxic activity compared to the other esters. Moreover, all compounds were evaluated as selective inhibitors of the human COX-1 enzyme using molecular docking by calculating the free energy of binding, inhibition constant, and other parameters to find out the binding affinity. The molecular study showed that esters (3d, f) and nitrile (2) revealed the highest binding affinities, hence enhancing the inhibition activity with the active site of the COX-1 enzyme. All the tested compounds have more negative Gibbs free, electrostatic, and total intermolecular energies than the standard inhibitor ASA. These results indicate that, all the tested sultams are potent anti-inflammatory drugs as compared to standard inhibitors. Finally, the chemical properties and the quantum factors of synthesized sultams were calculated based on density functional theory (DFT) to predict reactivity, and then correlated with the experimental data. Ester 3f showed the lowest ionization potential and lowest energy gap (Egap = 7.5691 eV), which was correlated with its cytotoxic activity. Furthermore, the spatial electron distribution of HOMO, LUMO were computed and it clearly indicates the electron donation ability of all the tested compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis of highly functionalized bis-β-lactams containing aromatic rings was achieved by thermal and microwave-assisted methods starting from easily available 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid and 2,2'-(propane-2,2-diyl)diphenol precursors. The approach to these valuable heterocyclic scaffolds involved formal [2π + 2π] cycloadditions between Schiff bases and novel bisketenes, which were generated in situ, followed by an electrocyclic reaction of zwitterionic intermediates. Reactions carried out under microwave irradiation were clean and gave high yields with significantly reduced reaction times. Interestingly, in the thermal method, the reaction proceeded in a stereospecific manner, and only the trans-cis or cis-cis isomers were formed. However, under the microwave conditions, the reaction proceeded stereoselectively, and other possible isomers such trans-trans and cis-trans isomers were formed in addition to the product formed under thermal conditions. More interestingly, when the two compounds that did not produce any products under thermal conditions were reacted under microwave conditions, one formed the trans-cis isomer and the other formed the cis-trans and trans-trans isomers as two products .

Abstract
Due to the emerging resistance against classical β-lactam-based antibiotics, a growing number of bacterial infections has become harder to treat. This alarming tendency necessitates continued research on novel antibacterial agents. Many classes of β-lactam antibiotics are characterized by the presence of the 3-aminoazetidin-2-one core, which resembles the natural substrate of the target penicillin-binding proteins. In that respect, this Review summarizes the different synthetic pathways toward this key structure for the development of new antibacterial agents. The most extensively applied methods for 3-amino-β-lactam ring formation are discussed, in addition to a few less common strategies. Moreover, approaches to introduce the 3-amino substituent after ring formation are also covered.

Abstract
Photocyclization of N-(thioalkyl)-saccharin was carried out to obtain different polycyclic sultams in good yields. These photoreactions were efficient under inert atmosphere and acetone triplet-sensitized conditions indicating that the triplet excited state is directly involved in the formation of annulated products. The presence of molecular oxygen changes product distribution, and only photo-oxygenation products (sulfoxides and sulfones) were found. This result is especially valuable since, by simple changing from nitrogen- to oxygen-saturated solvent conditions, the reaction outcome can be tuned from cyclized to sulfur oxidation products. Additionally, steady-state photolysis, electrochemistry, and laser time-resolved spectroscopic studies confirmed that these reactions mainly proceeded by intramolecular electron transfer (ET) between the triplet excited saccharin moiety and sulfur atom.
