Synthesis of Substituted Benzenes via Bi(OTf)3-Mediated Intramolecular Carbonyl Allylation of α-Prenyl or α-Geranyl β-Arylketosulfones

Iodine-Catalyzed Synthesis of Substituted Furans and Pyrans: Reaction Scope and Mechanistic Insights

Substituted pyrans and furans are core structures found in a wide variety of natural products and biologically active compounds. Herein, we report a practical and mild catalytic method for the synthesis of substituted pyrans and furans using molecular iodine, a simple and inexpensive catalyst. The method described is performed under solvent-free conditions at an ambient temperature and atmosphere, thus offering a facile and practical alternative to currently available reaction protocols. A combination of experimental studies and density functional theory calculations revealed interesting mechanistic insights into this seemingly simple reaction.

Oxidative Sulfonylation of Hydrazones Enabled by Synergistic Copper/Silver Catalysis

A copper/silver-cocatalyzed protocol for oxidative sulfonylation of hydrazones is demonstrated. A wide range of β-ketosulfones and N-acylsulfonamides are directly synthesized in moderate to good yields. Our work provides a viable method for scalable preparation of β-ketosulfone derivatives that have found wide applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

Ionic-caged heterometallic bismuth-platinum complex exhibiting electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

An air-stable heterometallic Bi-Pt complex with the formula [BiPt(SAc)5]n (1; SAc = thioacetate) was synthesized. The crystal structure, natural bond orbital (NBO) and local orbital locator (LOL) analyses, localized orbital bonding analysis (LOBA), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements were used to confirm the existence of Bi-Pt bonding and an ionic cage of O atoms surrounding the Bi ion. From the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and controlled potential electrolysis (CPE) experiments, 1 in tetrahydrofuran reduced CO2 to CO, with a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92% and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 8 s-1 after 30 min of CPE at -0.79 V vs. NHE. The proposed mechanism includes an energetically favored pathway via the ionic cage, which is supported by the results of DFT calculations and reflectance infrared spectroelectrochemistry data.

Gram-Scale Synthesis of 3-Sulfonyl Flavanones

In this paper, an easy-operational, high-yielding method for the gram-scale synthesis of 3-sulfonyl flavanones is described by a one-pot straightforward POCl₃ mediated intermolecular (5 + 1) annulation of the β-ketosulfones with an o-hydroxyaryl group (dual nucleophile) and arylaldehydes (dual electrophile) in refluxing toluene for 3 h. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed. This protocol provides a highly effective annulation via one carbon-oxygen (C-O) and one carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formations.

NH2OH-HCl-Mediated Umpolung α-Methylsulfonylation of α-Sulfonyl Ketones with Methylsulfoxides: Synthesis of α,β-Bis-sulfonyl Arylketones

In this paper, a novel and efficient route for the synthesis of α,β-bis-sulfonyl arylketones via an NH₂OH-HCl-mediated intermolecular umpolung α-methylsulfonylation of α-sulfonyl ketones with methylsulfoxides is described. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed. Various reaction conditions for this efficient, one-pot, environmentally friendly transformation were investigated.

Iron-Catalyzed Synthesis of Tetrahydronaphthalenes via 3,4-Dihydro-2H-pyran Intermediates

The development of an iron(III)-catalyzed synthetic strategy toward functionalized tetrahydronaphthalenes is described. This approach is characterized by its operational simplicity and is distinct from currently available procedures that rely on [4 + 2]-cycloadditions. Our strategy takes advantage of the divergent reactivity observed for simple aryl ketone precursors to gain exclusive access to tetrahydronaphthalene products (23 examples). Detailed mechanistic investigations identified pyrans as reactive intermediates that afford the desired tetrahydronaphthalenes in high yields upon iron(III)-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation.

H2SO4-Mediated Stereocontrolled Annulation of Oxygenated Naphthalenes and 4-Alkenols: One-Pot Synthesis of Tetanthrenes

H₂SO₄-mediated one-pot stereocontrolled (4 + 2) annulation of 4-alkenols and oxygenated naphthalenes provided tetanthrenes in CH₂Cl₂ at 25 °C for 10 h. The use of various Brønsted acids or Lewis acids was investigated for a facile and efficient transformation. A plausible mechanism has been proposed.

Regiocontrolled Synthesis of α-Sulfonylmethyl o-Nitrostyrenes via ZnI2-Mediated Sulfonylation and AgNO2/Pd(PPh3)4-Promoted o-Nitration

We report herein the AgNO₂/Pd(PPh₃)₄-promoted regiocontrolled o-nitration of α-sulfonylmethylstyrenes in MeNO₂ with good yields. The o-nitration process provides a series of sulfonyl o-nitrostyrenes. Substituted α-sulfonylmethylstyrenes were synthesized from ZnI₂-mediated sulfonylation of substituted α-methylstyrenes and sodium sulfinates (RSO₂Na) in MeCN with good to excellent yields. The structures of the key products were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A plausible mechanism has been proposed herein.

Acid-catalysed intramolecular addition of β-ketoesters to 1,3-dienes

1,3-Dienyl β-keto esters are cyclised into bicyclolactones using the Bi(OTf)₃/TfOH catalytic system. This reaction represents a rare case of simultaneous C-C and C-O bond formation at positions 1 and 3 of a 1,3-diene. Application to the synthesis of ramulosin is presented.

A synthetic route to derive the skeleton of naphthalenes starting with isovanillin is described with modest total yields via the key transformation of metal triflate-mediated intramolecular benzannulation of o-formyl or o-benzoyl allylbenzenes in MeNO₂ at rt.
