Doubly Bridged Anthracenes: Blue Emitters for OLEDs

The photooxidative stability of a series of doubly bridged anthracenes was evaluated after their preparation via twofold macrocyclization of a bis(resorcinyl)anthracene. Lightfastness correlates with the energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), resulting in superior stability of the tetraesters compared to the tetraethers. The lengths and steric demand of the linker only plays a minor role for the ester-based compounds, which can be prepared in reasonable yields and thus tested in proof-of-concept organic light-emitting diodes. Double ester-bridging allows deep blue electro-luminescence, highlighting the importance of the choice of the functional groups used for macrocyclization.

Octopus-inspired deception and signaling systems from an exceptionally-stable acene variant

Multifunctional platforms that can dynamically modulate their color and appearance have attracted attention for applications as varied as displays, signaling, camouflage, anti-counterfeiting, sensing, biomedical imaging, energy conservation, and robotics. Within this context, the development of camouflage systems with tunable spectroscopic and fluorescent properties that span the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectral regions has remained exceedingly challenging because of frequently competing materials and device design requirements. Herein, we draw inspiration from the unique blue rings of the Hapalochlaena lunulata octopus for the development of deception and signaling systems that resolve these critical challenges. As the active material, our actuator-type systems incorporate a readily-prepared and easily-processable nonacene-like molecule with an ambient-atmosphere stability that exceeds the state-of-the-art for comparable acenes by orders of magnitude. Devices from this active material feature a powerful and unique combination of advantages, including straightforward benchtop fabrication, competitive baseline performance metrics, robustness during cycling with the capacity for autonomous self-repair, and multiple dynamic multispectral operating modes. When considered together, the described exciting discoveries point to new scientific and technological opportunities in the areas of functional organic materials, reconfigurable soft actuators, and adaptive photonic systems.

Electroreductive Hydroxymethylation of Imines with Ketones To Access β-Amino Alcohols

In this article, an electrochemical method for the direct synthesis of β-amino alcohols from imines and ketones is described. Mechanistic studies, including a radical trapping experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, and divided-cell electrolysis experiment, support the radical-involved reductive cross coupling of imines with ketones at the cathode. The use of abundant and easily prepared starting materials, high atom- and step-economy, and insensitivity to air and moisture make this synthetic strategy more efficient for the construction of various β-amino alcohol derivatives.

Deaminative Cyclization of Tertiary Amines for the Synthesis of 2-Arylquinoline Derivatives with a Nonsubstituted Vinylene Fragment

With triethylamine as a vinylene source, a convenient protocol for the regioselective synthesis of β,γ-nonsubstituted 2-arylquinolines from aldehydes and arylamines has been accomplished. The deaminative cyclization is also extended to long-chain tertiary alkylamines, enabling diverse alkyl groups to be concurrently installed into the pyridine rings. This process demonstrates a new conversion pathway for the simultaneous dual C(sp³)-H bond functionalization of tertiary amines, wherein the transient acyclic enamines generated in situ undergo the Povarov reaction.

Recyclable optical bioplastics platform for solid state red light harvesting via triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion

Sustainable photonics applications of solid-state triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion (TTA-UC) are limited by a small UC spectral window, low UC efficiency in air, and non-recyclability of polymeric materials used. In a step to overcome these issues, we have developed new recyclable TTA-UC bioplastics by encapsulating TTA-UC chromophores liquid inside the semicrystalline gelatin films showing broad-spectrum upconversion (red/far-red to blue) with high UC efficiency in air. For this, we synthesized a new anionic annihilator, sodium-TIPS-anthracene-2-sulfonate (TIPS-AnS), that combined with red/far-red sensitizers (PdTPBP/Os(m-peptpy)₂(TFSI)₂), a liquid surfactant Triton X-100 reduced (TXr) and protein gelatin (G) formed red/far-red to blue TTA-UC bioplastic films just by air drying of their aqueous solutions. The G-TXr-TIPS-AnS-PdTPBP film showed record red to blue (633 to 478 nm) TTA-UC quantum yield of 8.5% in air. The high UC quantum yield has been obtained due to the fluidity of dispersed TXr containing chromophores and oxygen blockage by gelatin fibers that allowed efficient diffusion of triplet excited chromophores. Further, the G-TXr-TIPS-AnS-Os(m-peptpy)₂(TFSI)₂ bioplastic film displayed far-red to blue (700-730 nm to 478 nm) TTA-UC, demonstrating broad-spectrum photon harvesting. Finally, we demonstrated the recycling of G-TXr-TIPS-AnS-PdTPBP bioplastics by developing a downstream approach that gives new directions for designing future recyclable photonics bioplastic materials.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Dehydrogenative Annulation of N-Arylmethanimines with Vinylene Carbonate for Synthesizing Quinolines

Here we report a novel Rh-catalyzed C-H/C-H alkenylation of N-arylmethanimines with vinylene carbonate acting as a vinylene unit. Forty examples of C3,C4-nonsubstituted quinolines were achieved from commercially available starting materials. This identified process features an exceedingly simple system, a lower loading of catalyst, and the capacity for postfunctionalization with bioactive molecules.

One-Pot Synthesis of Triazatriphenylene Using the Povarov Reaction

The Povarov reaction combines aromatic amines, aldehydes, and alkynes in a single step and is regarded as an annulative π-extension reaction of aromatic amines. In this study, the Povarov reaction was investigated as an efficient tool for the synthesis of aza-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via multiple π-extensions. The double Povarov reaction of 1,4-diaminobenzene yielded the 4,7-phenanthroline derivative as the major product, regardless of the steric repulsion in the product. The site selectivity mainly depended on the HOMO distribution of the intermediate rather than the steric factor. Based on these insights, a 1,5,9-triazatriphenylene derivative was synthesized via a triple Povarov reaction. The structures of the synthesized compounds were unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The triazatriphenylene derivative formed a smooth and stable thin film upon vacuum vapor deposition and served as a hole-blocking material in organic light-emitting diodes.

An aza-Diels-Alder approach to chlorinated quinolines, benzoquinolines, and polybenzoquinolines

Quinolines and quinoline-containing macromolecules are renowned for their valuable biological activities and excellent materials properties. Herein, we validate a general strategy for the synthesis of chloro-containing quinoline, benzoquinoline and polybenzoquinoline variants via the aza-Diels-Alder reaction. The described findings could be ultimately implemented in other synthetic pathways and may open new opportunities for analogous quinoline-derived materials.
