Pd/Norbornene Collaborative Catalysis on the Divergent Preparation of Heterocyclic Sulfoximine Frameworks

Transition-Metal-Free Sulfoximidation of Sulfonylhydrazones for the Synthesis of N-Sulfanylidenehydrazonamides

Herein, we report a transition-metal-free C-H bond sulfoximidation protocol of sulfonyl hydrazones with hypervalent iodine(III) reagents. A library of novel N-sulfaneylidenehydrazonamides was constructed via chemoselective C-N bond formation reactions at aldehyde C-H bonds of sulfonyl hydrazones in the presence of a base. The reaction demonstrated broad substrate group diversity under exceedingly mild reaction conditions, and excellent yields were achieved at room temperature.

A rhodium-catalyzed cascade C-H activation/annulation strategy for the expeditious assembly of pyrrolidinedione-fused 1,2-benzothiazines

A cascade annulation strategy triggered by rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H activation has been reported for the expeditious assembly of pyrrolidinedione-fused 1,2-benzothiazines from free NH-sulfoximines with maleimides under mild conditions. Without the need for inert atmosphere protection, a broad range of sulfoximines with maleimides were well tolerated, producing diverse fused-thiazine derivatives in moderate to good yields. Additionally, the late-stage transformation of the target product demonstrated the potential synthetic value of this protocol.

Modular Synthesis of 1,2-Benzothiazines and 1,2-Benzothiazine 1-Imines via Palladium-Catalyzed C-H/C-C Activation Reactions

In this study, a modular approach toward cyclic sulfoximines and sulfondiimines via palladium-catalyzed intramolecular C-H/C-C activation reactions was reported. Various 1,2-benzothiazines including bicyclic, tricyclic, highly fused ones, ones of the seven-membered ring, along with 1,2-benzothiazine 1-imines were accessed in good yields. KIE experiment demonstrated that the C-H bond cleavage at the position ortho to the sulfoximine group is not the rate-determining step in the coupling reaction.

[Cu]/NFSI-Mediated Cascade Diels-Alder Radical Annulations Using Norbornene as H-Acceptor under Redox-Neutral Conditions

An oxidative cascade [4 + 2] radical cycloaddition/dehydroaromatization reaction of aryl alkenes to access α-aryl substituted naphthalenes under redox-neutral conditions was achieved. This reaction was found to require the addition of [Cu] catalyst along with stoichiometric concentrations of NFSI as a trigger of radical series of steps. Norbornene (NBE), rather than the conventional oxidant, manifested optimal performances as a H-acceptor in this procedure. The results herein might shed encouraging insight into the transition-metal-catalyzed dehydrogenative C-H activation protocols.

NBE-Controlled Palladium-Catalyzed Intermolecular Selective C-H Silylation of Boronic Acids

An efficient palladium-catalyzed intermolecular selective C-H silylation of boronic acids is described. The combination of palladium catalyst with copper oxidant enables ortho-selective C-H silylation by employing hexamethyldisilane as the trimethylsilyl source, which relies on the control of NBE derivatives as a switch, thus providing straightforward access to divergent organosilicon compounds.

One-Pot Three-Component Synthesis of Phenanthrenes via Palladium-Catalyzed Catellani and Retro-Diels-Alder Reactions

An efficient one-pot three-component palladium-catalyzed domino reaction of aryl iodide, 2-bromophenylboronic acid, and norbornadiene to produce phenanthrenes has been developed. Norbornadiene serves both as the activator of ortho-C-H bond and the source of ethylene via a retro-Diels-Alder reaction. The method features inexpensive and readily available substrates, a broad range of functional groups, and good yields.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of Cyclic Sulfoximines via C-H Bond Activation

Sulfoximines, a ubiquitous class of structural motifs, are widely present in bioactive molecules and functional materials that have received considerable attention from modern organic chemistry, pharmaceutical industries, and materials science. Sulfoximines have proved to be an effective directing group for C-H functionalization which was widely investigated for the synthesis of cyclic sulfoximines. Within the last decade, great progress has been achieved in the synthesis of cyclic sulfoximines. Thus, this review highlights the recent advances in the synthesis of cyclic sulfoximines via the C-H activation strategy and is classified based on the substrate types.

Transition-metal-catalyzed domino reactions of strained bicyclic alkenes

This review presents a comprehensive overview of transition-metal-catalyzed domino reactions of strained bicyclic alkenes, including both homo- and heterobicyclic alkenes. These compounds are important synthons in organic synthesis, providing an important platform for the construction of biologically/medicinally significant compounds which bear multiple stereocenters. The review has been divided according to the metal used in the reaction. An overview of the substrate scope, reaction conditions, and their potential applications in organic synthesis is discussed. A comprehensive outlook on the reactivity paradigms of homo- and heterobicyclic alkenes is discussed and should shed light on future directions for further development in this field.

Transition metal-free, base mediated one-pot approach for the construction of the benzo[b][1,4,5]oxathiazepine 1-oxide core

Protocol for synthesising selected separable diastereomers of benzo[b][1,4,5]oxathiazepine 1-oxides via intermolecular epoxide ring opening by o-halogenated NH-sulfoximine followed by cyclisation and configurations were assigned by 2D NMR and X-ray crystallography.

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of 2-iodobiphenyls with ortho-chloroacetophenones through dual C–H arylation for the construction of tribenzo[a,c,f]cyclooctanones

A Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of 2-iodobiphenyls with ortho-chloroacetophenones has been developed through C–H activation. The reaction provides a straightforward method for the construction of tribenzo[a,c,f]cyclooctanones.

Synthesis and Transformations of NH-Sulfoximines

Recent years have seen a marked increase in the occurrence of sulfoximines in the chemical sciences, often presented as valuable motifs for medicinal chemistry. This has been prompted by both pioneering works taking sulfoximine containing compounds into clinical trials and the concurrent development of powerful synthetic methods. This review covers recent developments in the synthesis of sulfoximines concentrating on developments since 2015. This includes extensive developments in both S-N and S-C bond formations. Flow chemistry processes for sulfoximine synthesis are also covered. Finally, subsequent transformations of sulfoximines, particularly in N-functionalization are reviewed, including N-S, N-P, N-C bond forming processes and cyclization reactions.

Pd-Catalyzed double carbopalladation/syn-insertion cascade reactions toward medium-size sulfoximine heterocycles

With the assistance of Ac in sulfoximine as a protecting group (PG) and MeOH as a de-PG agent, Pd-catalyzed multicomponent reactions were developed to access indene-fused medium-size sulfoximine heterocycles. The reactions proceeded smoothly under exceptionally mild conditions to produce polyheterocyclic sulfoximines with regiospecificity and good functional group tolerance. A double carbopalladation/syn-insertion of triple bond sequences was proposed tothis transformation.

One-pot multi-step cascade protocols toward β-indolyl sulfoximidoyl amides via intermolecular trapping of an α-indolylpalladium complex by CO

Various β-indolyl sulfoximidoyl amides were efficiently prepared from ortho-iodoanilines, propargyl bromides, 1 atm of CO, and substituted NH-sulfoximines, through a palladium-catalyzed indole annulation/carbonyl insertion/C-N bond formation cascade. Mostly good to high yields of the products were obtained through this multi-step, one-pot reaction protocol under very gentle reaction conditions. The obtained β-indolyl sulfoximidoyl amides could be converted into biologically interesting sulfoximine analogues that contain a tryptamine moiety.

Nickel-Catalyzed N-Arylation of NH-Sulfoximines with Aryl Halides via Paired Electrolysis

A novel strategy for the N-arylation of NH-sulfoximines has been developed by merging nickel catalysis and electrochemistry (in an undivided cell), thereby providing a practical method for the construction of sulfoximine derivatives. Paired electrolysis is employed in this protocol, so a sacrificial anode is not required. Owing to the mild reaction conditions, excellent functional group tolerance and yield are achieved. A preliminary mechanistic study indicates that the anodic oxidation of a Ni^II species is crucial to promote the reductive elimination of a C-N bond from the resulting Ni^III species at room temperature.

Influence of Superhydrophobic Coating on the Water Resistance of Foundry Dust/Magnesium Oxychloride Cement Composite

In this work, magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) was used to realize the resource use of foundry dust (FD). Portland cement (PC)-based superhydrophobic coating was prepared on the surface of FD/MOC composite to improve the water resistance of the composite. First, the FD/MOC composites with different contents of FD were prepared. The phase structure of the composite was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure of the cross-section and surface of the composite was observed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The mechanical properties of the FD/MOC composites with different FD contents at different ages were tested and analyzed. Secondly, the superhydrophobic coating was prepared on the surface of MOC composite using silane/siloxane aqueous emulsion as the hydrophobic modifier, PC as the matrix and water as the solvent. The microstructure and chemical composition of the PC-based superhydrophobic coating were tested and analyzed. The results show that FD can significantly improve the early strength of the FD/MOC composite. The 28-day compressive strength of the FD/MOC composite decreases with increasing FD content. When the FD content is 30%, the 28-day compressive strength of the FD/MOC composite is as high as 75.68 MPa. Superhydrophobic coating can effectively improve the water resistance of the FD/MOC composite. The softening coefficient of the FD/MOC composite without superhydrophobic coating is less than 0.26, while that of the composite modified by superhydrophobic coating is greater than 0.81.

Herein reported is a practical Catellani-type ortho-acylation of aryl iodides enabled by employing moisture-insensitive esters as the electrophile via C(O)–O bond cleavage.

A denitrogenative palladium-catalyzed cascade for regioselective synthesis of fluorenes

We herein report a denitrogenative palladium-catalyzed cascade for the modular and regioselective synthesis of polysubstituted fluorenes. Hydrazone facilitates the Pd(ii) to Pd(iv) oxidative addition in a Catellani pathway and is also the methylene synthon in the proposed reaction. Aryl iodides and 2-bromoarylaldehyde hydrazones undergo a norbornene-controlled tandem reaction sequence to give a broad scope of fluorenes in the presence of a palladium catalyst. The method described is scalable and adaptable to a three-component reaction with in situ generation of the hydrazone group. Preliminary mechanistic investigations have been conducted.

Facile synthesis of N-1,2,4-oxadiazole substituted sulfoximines from N-cyano sulfoximines

A divergent approach has been successfully developed for the synthesis of N-1,2,4-oxadiazole substituted sulfoximines starting from N-cyano sulfoximines. This method has a wide degree of substrate scope that includes aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, fluoroalkyl and saturated heterocyclic compounds. Excellent functional group tolerability was also observed. Extension of this methodology to nucleosides, amino acids and dipeptides was found to be successful. A gram scale reaction was also established. The major part of this method is metal free and the utility of environmentally friendly solvents such as 2-methyl THF and ionic liquids is an added advantage.

Synthesis of thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazoline derivatives via base-promoted cascade bicyclization of o-alkenylphenyl isothiocyanates with propargylamines

A highly efficient cascade bicyclization reaction of o-alkenylphenyl isothiocyanates with propargylamines has been developed, which affords a series of thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolines in good to excellent yields by using K₂CO₃ as a base in MeCN at 80 °C. This method is transition-metal-free and operationally simple with broad functional group tolerance. Mechanistically, 6-exo-trig hydroamination followed by 5-exo-dig hydrothiolation was involved in this transformation.

Palladium/Norbornene Cooperative Catalysis

Palladium/norbornene cooperative catalysis has emerged as a distinct approach to construct polyfunctionalized arenes from readily available starting materials. This Review provides a comprehensive overview of this field, including the early stoichiometric investigations, catalytic reaction developments, as well as the applications in the syntheses of bioactive compounds and polymers. The section of catalytic reactions is divided into two parts according to the reaction initiation mode: Pd(0)-initiated reactions and Pd(II)-initiated reactions.

Chemoselective Borono-Catellani Arylation for Unsymmetrical Biaryls Synthesis

Reported is the borono-Catellani arylation process for unsymmetrical biaryls synthesis, utilizing the readily available pinacol ester of arylboronic acids, aryl bromides, and olefins as the reactants. The distinct reactivity of arylboronic ester and aryl bromides secures the excellent chemoselectivity in the pivotal arylation step. The reaction is enabled by the cooperative catalysis of Pd(OAc)₂ and the NBE derivative N⁷, with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant.

N-Arylation of NH-Sulfoximines via Dual Nickel Photocatalysis

The pharmaceutically underexplored sulfoximine moiety has emerged as a potentially active pharmaceutical ingredient. We developed a scalable synthetic route to N-arylated sulfoximines from the respective “free” NH-sulfoximines and bromoarenes. Our strategy is based on a dual nickel photocatalytic approach, is applicable for a broad scope of substrates, and exhibits a highly functional group tolerance. In addition, we could demonstrate that other sulfoximidoyl derivatives like sulfonimidamides and sulfinamides proceed smoothly under the developed reaction conditions.

Palladium-catalyzed cascade carboesterification of norbornene with alkynes

An efficient and convenient palladium-catalyzed cascade carboesterification of norbornenes (NBE) with alkynes has been accomplished to afford functionalized α-methylene γ-lactone and tetrahydrofuran derivatives in good to excellent yields. This new strategy exhibits excellent atom- and step-economy, good functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope. In particular, NBE-palladium species was proposed to be the key intermediate in the catalytic cycle to suppress the β-H elimination process. Notably, the developed protocol provides a straightforward and practical tool for the construction of diverse oxygen-containing heterocycle frameworks, illustrating a promising application in synthetic and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Pd/P/dba-Promoted cascade annulations to produce fused medium-sized sulfoximine polyheterocycles

The Pd-catalyzed multicomponent reactions of NH-sulfoximine, aryl iodide and norbornadiene (NBD) are reported to chemoselectively produce fused medium-sized sulfoximine polyheterocycles in good to excellent yields.

Copper-Catalyzed Diversity-Oriented Synthesis (DOS) of 4-Amino-2H-chromen-2-imines: Application of Kemp Elimination toward O-Heterocycles

We report herein a copper-catalyzed sequential multicomponent reaction of benzo[d]isoxazoles with terminal alkynes and sulfonyl azides, which produced divergent 4-amino-2H-chromen-2-imines with excellent chemical selectivity. The reaction tolerated a broad range of functional groups, and released only N₂ as the sole byproduct. The sulfonyl imino group could be removed to give biologically active free 4-amino-2H-chromenone in good yield.
