Abstract
While aromatic diazonium salts are important reagents in organic synthesis, 'Diazonium ions generated from ordinary aliphatic primary amines are usually useless for preparative purposes, since they lead to a mixture of products giving not only substitution by any nucleophile present, but also elimination and rearrangements if the substrate permits.'1 In this work, we report that this statement is no longer valid, and it is now possible to control diazotization of aliphatic amines by utilizing isopentyl nitrite in HFIP. This transformation enabled electrophilic aromatic substitution with these highly abundant and commercially available alkyl reagents, as well as transforming them into building blocks typically employed in organic synthesis. The methodology opens an avenue for reactions involving aliphatic amines, even such demanding substrates as amino acids, as a source of carbocations thus expanding the degree of chemical space.

Abstract
In this study, we have disclosed N-alkylation and C-alkylation reactions of 2-oxindoles with secondary alcohols. Interestingly, these chemoselective reactions are tunable by changing the reaction conditions. Utilization of protic solvent and Brønsted acid catalyst afforded C-alkylation, whereas, aprotic solvent and Lewis acid catalyst afforded N-alkylation of 2-oxindoles in good to excellent yields. Regioselectivity is achieved by protecting the N-center of the oxindole and C5 alkylated product is furnished exclusively. This protocol is notable because it demonstrates functionalization at the C7 position of oxindole without the need for any directing group at the N-center. Further, a new protocol has been reported for C-H oxygenation at the benzylic position of one of the C5 alkylated derivative.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed highly para-selective electrophilic aromatic alkylation of monosubstituted simple arenes has been accomplished. This method provides a practical platform for the transformation from simple commercial arenes to well-defined di- and multisubstituted aromatics with high added value. Control experiments and DFT calculations reveal that the achievement of the excellent site-selectivity is ascribed to the controlled deprotonation of the Wheland intermediates. Remarkably, the type of alkylating regent has been shown to have a significant impact on site-selectivity.

Abstract
An iridium-catalyzed and phenol-directed deoxygenation of benzylic alcohols comes as an alternative access to 4-alkylphenols, featuring low catalyst loading (S/C up to 20,000, TOF up to 12,400 h-1), high functionality compatibility, and excellent site-selectivity. The applications in late-stage modification of steroids and gram-scale total synthesis of a Gastrodia elata extract are highlighted. Mechanistically, the intermediacy of quinone methide controls the site-selectivity, and the formation of iridium hydride serves as the rate-limiting step.

Abstract
Here, we describe highly efficient intramolecular hydroarylations mediated by Re2O7/HReO4. Styrene derivatives of different electronic properties have been activated to effect a challenging intramolecular hydroarylation for the facile access to various substituted 1-aryltetralin structures. This method is characterized by mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, high chemical yields, and 100% atom economy. The potential synthetic application of this methodology was exemplified by the efficient total synthesis of an isoCA-4 analogue.

Abstract
The solvent effects in Friedel-Crafts cycloalkylation of epoxides and Cope rearrangement of aldimines were investigated by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Explicit molecular treatments were applied for both reactants and solvents. The reaction mechanisms were elucidated via free energy calculations based on metadynamics simulations. The results reveal that both reactions proceed in a concerted fashion. Key solvent-substrate interactions are identified from the structures of transition states with explicit solvent molecules. The remarkable promotion effect of hexafluoroisopropanol solvent is ascribed to the synergistic effect of H-bonding networks and C-H/π interactions with substrates.

Abstract
A catalytic asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between iminoesters derived from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and different activated alkenes is reported. Excellent levels of diastereo and enantioselectivity were obtained when Fesulphos/CuI complex was used as catalyst. This metodology provides an effective and sustainable access to challenging enantioenriched heterocyclic scaffolds and represents one of the rare examples of catalytic asymmetric transformations using HMF as a starting material.

Abstract
We describe herein the first access to 12-membered cyclic[7,0]ortho,meta-diarylheptanoids. The key features of the synthesis include both a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and a ring closing metathesis. Actinidione, a promising natural product, along with a bioactive tetracyclic derivative were obtained in 14 steps for the first time from cheap commercially available substrates with an overall yield of 18-21%. Our modus operandi complies with the principles of the synthesis ideality by using notably strategic reactions.

Abstract
Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) is a solvent with unique properties that has recently gained attention for promoting a wide range of challenging chemical reactions. It was initially believed that HFIP was almost exclusively involved in the stabilization of cationic intermediates, owing to its high polarity and low nucleophilicity. However, in many cases, the mechanism of action of HFIP appears to be more complex. Recent findings reveal that many Lewis and Brønsted acid-catalyzed transformations conducted in HFIP additionally involve cooperation between the catalyst and HFIP hydrogen-bond clusters, akin to Lewis- or Brønsted acid-assisted-Brønsted acid catalysis. This feature article showcases the remarkable versatility of HFIP in Lewis and Brønsted acid-catalyzed reactions, with an emphasis on examples yielding mechanistic insight.

[DOI: 10.2174/1570179416666190412164738] [Citation(s) in RCA: 70] [Impact Index Per Article: 11.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/09/2018] [Revised: 02/11/2019] [Accepted: 03/11/2019] [Indexed: 12/25/2022]
Abstract
Background:
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a biomass-derived
platform chemical, which can be produced from carbohydrates. In the past decades, 5-
HMF has received tremendous attention because of its wide applications in the
production of various value-added chemicals, materials and biofuels. The manufacture
and the catalytic conversion of 5-HMF to simple industrially-important bulk chemicals
have been well reviewed. However, employing 5-HMF as a building block in organic
synthesis has never been summarized exclusively, despite the rapid development in this
area.
Objective:
The aim of this review is to bring a fresh perspective on the use of 5-HMF in
organic synthesis, to the exclusion of already well documented conversion of 5-HMF
towards relatively simple molecules such as 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, 2,5-dimethylfuran and so on notably
used as monomers or biofuels.
Conclusion:
As it has been shown throughout this review, 5-HMF has been the object of numerous studies on
its use in fine chemical synthesis. Thanks to the presence of different functional groups on this platform
chemical, it proved to be an excellent starting material for the preparation of various fine chemicals. The use of
this C-6 synthon in novel synthetic routes is appealing, as it allows the incorporation of renewable carbonsources
into the final targets.

Abstract
A strategy for the gold(III)-catalyzed decarboxylative coupling reaction of indole-3-carboxylic acids with benzylic alcohols has been developed. This cascade reaction is devised as a straightforward and efficient synthetic route for 3-benzylindoles in moderate to excellent yields (50-93%). A Hammett study of the protodecarboxylation gives a negative ρ value, suggesting that there is a buildup of positive charge on the indole ring in the transition state. Furthermore, comparison of initial rates in H2O and in D2O reveals an observed kinetic solvent isotope effect (KSIE = 2.7). This simple protocol, which affords the desired products with CO2 and water as the coproducts, can be achieved under mild conditions without the need for base or other additives in water.

Abstract
We report here a method of direct Friedel-Crafts benzylation of arenes with benzylic alcohols using cheap and readily available bisulfate salt as the catalyst in hexafluoroisopropanol. The catalytic system is powerful with a quite diverse group of functionalized arenes and benzylic alcohols. These mild conditions provide a straightforward synthesis of a variety of unsymmetrical diarylmethanes in high yield with good to high regioselectivity. An SN1 mechanism involving activation of the hydroxy group through a hydrogen bond is proposed.
