Abstract
9,10-Diboratatriptycene salts M2[RB(μ-C6H4)3BR] (R = H, Me; M+ = Li+, K+, [n-Bu4N]+) have been synthesized via [4 + 2] cycloaddition between doubly reduced 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracenes M2[DBA] and benzyne, generated in situ from C6H5F and C6H5Li or LiN(i-Pr)2. [HB(μ-C6H4)3BH]2- reacts with CH2Cl2 to form quantitatively the bridgehead-derivatized [ClB(μ-C6H4)3BCl]2-, while twofold H- abstraction with B(C6F5)3 in the presence of SMe2 leads cleanly to the diadduct (Me2S)B(μ-C6H4)3B(SMe2). Photoisomerization of K2[HB(μ-C6H4)3BH] (THF, medium-pressure Hg lamp) provides facile access to diborabenzo[a]fluoranthenes, a little explored form of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. According to DFT calculations, the underlying reaction mechanism consists of three main steps: (i) photoinduced di-π-borate rearrangement, (ii) "walk reaction" of a BH unit, and (iii) boryl anion-like C-H activation.

Abstract
A new series of O∧C-chelate tetra-coordinated boranes with naphtha-aldehyde as the chelate backbone have been synthesized. Their photophysical and photochemical properties have been examined, which show that all of the compounds can undergo both photo and thermal transformations, generating aryl-migrated [1,2]oxaborinine derivatives as the major products. 1,3-Sigmatropic shifts and an intramolecular nucleophilic addition mechanism are proposed for the photochemical and thermal conversion pathways, respectively.

Abstract
The choice of backbone linker for two ortho-bis-(9-borafluorene)s has a great influence on the LUMO located at the boron centers and, therefore, the reactivity of the respective compounds. Herein, we report the room temperature rearrangement of 1,2-bis-(9-borafluorenyl)-ortho-carborane, C2B10H10-1,2-[B(C12H8)]2 ([2a]) featuring o-carborane as the inorganic three-dimensional backbone and the synthesis of 1,2-bis-(9-borafluorenyl)benzene, C6H4-1,2-[B(C12H8)]2 (2b), its phenylene analog. DFT calculations on the transition state for the rearrangement support an intramolecular C-H bond activation process via an SEAr-like mechanism in [2a], and predicted that the same rearrangement would take place in 2b, but at elevated temperatures, which indeed proved to be the case. The rearrangement gives access to 3a and 3b as dibora-benzo[a]fluoroanthene isomers, a form of diboron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that had yet to be explored. The isolated compounds 2b, 3a, and 3b were fully characterized by NMR, HRMS, cyclic voltammetry (CV), single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and photophysical measurements, supported by DFT and TD-DFT calculations.

Abstract
Boroles are attracting broad interest for their myriad and diverse applications, including in synthesis, small molecule activation and functional materials. Their properties and reactivity are closely linked to the cyclic conjugated diene system, which has been shown to participate in cycloaddition reactions, such as the Diels‐Alder reaction with alkynes. The reaction steps leading to boranorbornadienes, borepins and tricyclic boracyclohexenes from the thermal reaction of boroles with alkynes are seemingly well understood as judged from the literature. Herein, we question the long‐established mechanistic picture of pericyclic rearrangements by demonstrating that seven‐membered borepins (i. e., heptaphenylborepin and two derivatives substituted with a thienyl and chloride substituent on boron) exist in a dynamic equilibrium with the corresponding bicyclic boranorbornadienes, the direct Diels‐Alder products, but are not isolable products from the reactions. Heating gradually converts the isomeric mixtures into fluorescent tricyclic boracyclohexenes, the most stable isomers in the series. Results from mechanistic DFT calculations reveal that the tricyclic compounds derive from the boranorbornadienes and not the borepins, which were previously believed to be intermediates in purely pericyclic processes.

Abstract
The synthesis of benzoborole dianions by alkali metal reduction of BN-naphthalene derivatives via a ring-contraction strategy has been developed. Reduction of 1-alkynyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 a in Et2 O led to the elimination of alkynyllithium with the formation of 1-amino-1-benzoborole trilithium salt 2 a, whereas reduction of 1-phenyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 c in THF yielded 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with the elimination of ArNHLi. The trilithium and dilithium salts 2 a and 2 c have been fully characterized. Treatment of trilithium salt 2 a with Et3 NHCl led to the selective protonation of the amino lithium to afford the dilithium salt 2 aH, which could be cleanly oxidized to 1-amino-1-benzoborole 3 in an excellent yield. Reaction of 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with MeI yielded the lithium borate 4 c, which is luminescent both in solution and in the solid state.

Abstract
![]()
A thorough investigation has enabled
the optimization of the synthesis
of 1,4-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles. Although salts
of such metals as vanadium, niobium, cerium, and manganese were found
to facilitate the formation of 1,4-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles from amines, aldehydes, and diacetyl, we confirmed that
iron salts are the most efficient catalysts. The conditions identified
(first step: toluene/AcOH = 1:1, 1 h, 50 °C; second step: toluene/AcOH
= 1:1, Fe(ClO4)3·H2O, 16 h,
50 °C) resulted in the formation of tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles in a 6–69% yield. For the first time,
very electron-rich substituents (4-Me2NC6H4, 3-(OH)C6H4, pyrrol-2-yl) originating
from aldehydes and sterically hindered substituents (2-ClC6H4, 2-BrC6H4, 2-CNC6H4, 2-(CO2Me)C6H4, 2-(TMS-C≡C)C6H4) present on anilines can be appended to the
pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core. It is now also possible
to prepare 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles bearing
an ordered arrangement of N-substituents and C-substituents ranging from coumarin, quinoline, phthalimide
to truxene. These advances in scope enable independent regulations
of many desired photophysical properties, including the Stokes shift
value and emission color ranging from violet-blue through deep blue,
green, yellow to red. Simultaneously, the optimized conditions have
finally allowed the synthesis of these extremely promising heterocycles
in amounts of more than 10 g per run without a concomitant decrease
in yield or product contamination. Empowered with better functional
group compatibility, novel derivatization strategies were developed.

Abstract
Dimesitylboron-functionalized stilbene derivatives have been found to undergo an unusual regioselective photoisomerization upon irradiation at 365 nm. Using NMR to follow the photoreaction, the structures of key reaction intermediates and the final products were established. This photoisomerization occurs in four steps: trans-cis isomerization, Diels-Alder reaction, di-π-methane rearrangement, and ring opening with [1,3]-H migration. This results in the formation of a rare structure with three fused five-membered rings and a six-membered one.

Abstract
Double reduction of the THF adduct of 9H-9-borafluorene (1⋅THF) with excess alkali metal affords the dianion salts M2 [1] in essentially quantitative yields (M=Li-K). Even though the added charge is stabilized through π delocalization, [1]2- acts as a formal boron nucleophile toward organoboron (1⋅THF) and tetrel halide electrophiles (MeCl, Et3 SiCl, Me3 SnCl) to form B-B/C/Si/Sn bonds. The substrate dependence of open-shell versus closed-shell pathways has been investigated.

Abstract
New chiral N,C-chelate organoboron compounds based on benzylideneamines (bza) with the general formula of B(bza-R)Mes2 (R=H or Me; Mes=mesityl) are reported. A chiral substituent group R- or S-CH(CH3 )Ph (Ph=phenyl) was introduced to the imine center, which imposed a previously unobserved pseudo- or axial-chirality on the BMes2 , creating distinct diastereomers. NMR spectroscopic studies established that the diastereomers undergo slow exchange in solution at ambient temperature. The chiral N,C-chelate B(bza-R)Mes2 molecules undergo photoisomerization in the same manner as their non-chiral analogues, generating chiral BN-cyclooctatriene (BN-COT) derivatives. Most significantly, by tracking the photoisomerization with circular dichroism (CD) and 1 H NMR spectra along with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computational studies, the photoisomerization was established to proceed in a highly stereoselective manner, that is, one diastereomer converts exclusively to the corresponding diastereomer product in the photoreaction.

Abstract
An N-heterocyclic-carbene-ligated 3-benzoborepin with a bridged structure has been synthesized by double radical trans-hydroboration of benzo[3,4]cycloundec-3-ene-1,5-diyne with an N-heterocyclic carbene borane. The thermal reaction of the NHC-ligated borepin at 150 °C gives an isolable NHC-boranorcaradiene. Experiments and density functional theory calculations support a mechanism whereby the borepin initially rearranges to a boranorcaradiene by a thermal 6π-electrocyclic reaction. This is followed by 1,5-boron shift to give a rearranged boranorcaradiene. This shift occurs with stereoinversion at boron through a transition state with open-shell diradical character. This is the first example of the isolation of a boranorcaradiene from a thermal reaction of a borepin.

Abstract
Although N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have brought profound changes in catalytic organic synthesis, their generation generally requires an inert atmosphere and harsh conditions. To overcome these limitations, an air-stable NHC photogenerator has been developed involving two mild components: 1,3-bis(mesityl)imidazolium tetraphenylborate (IMesH+BPh4-) and electronically excited isopropylthioxanthone (ITX). In this study, the photochemical mechanism is investigated via the accurate identification of the transient species and photoproducts. Electron transfer reaction between the excited triplet state of ITX and BPh4- is demonstrated as being the primary photochemical step. Nanosecond laser spectroscopy shows an efficient quenching and the formation of the expected ITX radical anion. The oxidized borane species is not observed, suggesting that this short-lived species could dissociate very rapidly to give the phenyl radical - successfully identified using electron paramagnetic resonance - and triphenylborane. As regards the final photoproducts, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies support the formation of the targeted NHC, 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes), suggesting the occurrence of a subsequent proton transfer reaction between ITX radical anion and imidazolium cation (IMesH+). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry reveals three other products: biphenyl, isopropylthioxanthene and ITX. Their formation can be reconciled with a 2-step mechanism of photoinduced electron/proton transfer reactions. 11B NMR spectroscopy demonstrates that the main organoboron photoproduct is diphenylborinic acid formed by oxidation of BPh3. Due to its Lewis acidity, Ph2BOH can react with IMes to yield an NHC-boron adduct.

Abstract
Boron compounds (1-4) containing an internal B-O bond have been found to undergo facile multistructural transformations upon irradiation at 365 or 410 nm, generating rare 8-membered B,O-heterocycles (1c-4c). In addition, 2 and 3 also undergo an intramolecular Diels-Alder addition and oxyborane elimination concomitantly, via intermediates 2b/3b, producing 2d/3d. The pathways to isomer c and product d were found to be a thermal process and a photo process, respectively.

Abstract
The addition of 2 eq. of MesLi to the biphenylene-containing 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene (DBA) 2 results in the formation of the corresponding oxaboraphenanthrene 3 after column chromatography under ambient conditions. In the initial step, the anionic B-Mes monoadduct of 2 is generated, which eliminates a formal [Mes2B:]- ion with concomitant C-C-bond formation (room temperature, 18 h). The resulting biphenylene-containing borafluorene 4 is still sufficiently Lewis acidic to add the second equivalent of MesLi ([4Mes]-). Using pristine 9-mesityl-9-borafluorene as a model system, we confirmed that both 4 and [4Mes]- should be capable of inserting an oxygen atom to furnish the observed oxaboraphenanthrene scaffold. The biphenylene-containing oxaboraphenanthrene 3 is a yellow compound with an absorption maximum at λmax = 450 nm. Similar to its DBA analogue 2, 3 shows no photoluminescence.

Abstract
The synthesis of [1,1'-bis(o-carboranyl)]boranes was achieved through the deprotonation of 1,1'-bis(o-carborane) reagents followed by salt metathesis with (iPr)2NBCl2. X-ray crystallography confirms planar central BC4 rings and Gutmann-Beckett studies reveal an increase in Lewis acidity at the boron center in comparison to their biphenyl congener, 9-borafluorene.

Abstract
N,C-chelate organoborates represent an emerging class of photoresponsive materials due to their photochromic switching at a boron center. Despite the promising applicability of such systems, little is known about the excited-state processes that lead to their unique photoreactivity, which is detrimental to the design of next-generation smart materials based on boron. As part of our ongoing effort to understand and improve the utility of these organoboron compounds, we report some of the first experimental evidence to support an excited-state mechanism for N,C-chelate organoborates. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy combined with steady-state UV/vis and fluorescence measurements gives direct insight into their underlying photochemical processes, such as the formation of a common triplet charge-transfer state which either relaxes radiatively or undergoes the desired photoisomerization through a biradical intermediate. With this information, a complete mechanistic picture of the excited-state reactivity of N,C-chelate organoborates has been established, which is anticipated to lead to new smart materials with improved performance.
