Nitrogen-Centered Concave Molecules with Double Fused Pentagons

Determination of energetic positions of electronic states and the exciton dynamics in a π-expanded N-heterotriangulene derivative adsorbed on Au(111)

Bridged triarylamines, so-called N-heterotriangulenes (N-HTAs) are promising organic semiconductors for applications in optoelectronic devices. Thereby the electronic structure at organic/metal interfaces and within thin films as well as the electronically excited states dynamics after optical excitation is essential for the performance of organic-molecule-based devices. Here, we investigated the energy level alignment and the excited state dynamics of a N-HTA derivative adsorbed on Au(111) by means of energy- and time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. We quantitatively determined the energetic positions of several occupied and unoccupied molecular (transport levels) and excitonic states (optical gap) in detail. A transport gap of 3.20 eV and an optical gap of 2.58 eV is determined, resulting in an exciton binding energy of 0.62 eV. With the first time-resolved investigation on a N-HTA compound we gained insights into the exciton dynamics and resolved processes on the femtosecond to picosecond timescale.

Formation of Nitrogen-Doped Positively Curved Molecules by π-Extension

Two nitrogen-doped positively curved aromatic molecules bearing doubly fused pentagonal rings were synthesized and characterized. Crystallographic analysis confirms the formation of a bowl-shaped structure, which is induced by the fusion of adjacent pentagons to the rigid aromatic planes. Both compounds demonstrate good photoluminescence. These electron-rich bowl-shaped molecules can associate with C60 to form complexes in 2:1 ratio in toluene with different association constants depending on the molecular dimension of the hosts.

Facile Functionalization of Ambipolar, Nitrogen-Doped PAHs toward Highly Efficient TADF OLED Emitters

Despite promising optoelectronic features of N-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their use as functional materials remains underdeveloped due to their limited post-functionalization. Facing this challenge, a novel design of N-doped PAHs with D-A-D electronic structure for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters was performed. Implementing a set of auxiliary donors at the meta position of the protruding phenyl ring of quinoxaline triggers an increase in the charge-transfer property simultaneously decreasing the delayed fluorescence lifetime. This, in turn, contributes to a narrow (0.04-0.28 eV) singlet-triplet exchange energy split (ΔEST) and promotes a reverse intersystem crossing transition that is pivotal for an efficient TADF process. Boosting the electron-donating ability of our N-PAH scaffold leads to excellent photoluminescence quantum yield that was found in a solid-state matrix up to 96% (for phenoxazine-substituted derivatives, under air) with yellow or orange-red emission, depending on the specific compound. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) utilizing six, (D-A)-D, N-PAH emitters demonstrate a significant throughput with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 21.9% which is accompanied by remarkable luminance values which were found for all investigated devices in the range of 20,000-30,100 cd/m2 which is the highest reported to date for N-doped PAHs investigated in the OLED domain.

Carbonyl-Containing Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for Narrow-Band Electroluminescence

Carbonyl-containing derivatives show enduring vitality in the field of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials; they can realize high device efficiency by using both singlet and triplet excitons for electroluminescence. Recently, a system based on fused ketone/amine exhibited huge potential for constructing multi-resonance TADF (MR-TADF) emitters, which exhibit higher narrow-band emission than conventional TADF emitters with twisted donor-acceptor (D-A) structure. Herein, we summarize current research progress in both traditional and MR-type ketone derivatives with TADF characteristics for introducing the molecular design strategy of maintaining high device efficiency while keeping narrow-band emission profile. We hope this review can inspire the emergence of more high-performance narrow-band materials.

Oxidative Cyclodehydrogenation of Trinaphthylamine: Selective Formation of a Nitrogen-Centered Polycyclic π-System Comprising 5- and 7-Membered Rings

We describe a new type of nitrogen-centered polycyclic scaffold comprising a unique combination of 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings. The compound is accessible through an intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of tri(1-naphthyl)amine. To the best of our knowledge this is the very first example of a direct 3-fold cyclization of a triarylamine under oxidative conditions. The unusual ring fusion motif is confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the impact of cyclization on the electronic and photophysical properties is investigated both experimentally and theoretically based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The formation of the unexpected product is rationalized by detailed mechanistic studies on the DFT level. The results suggest the cyclization to occur under kinetic control via a dicationic mechanism.

Nitrogen-doped molecular bowls as electron donors in photoinduced electron transfer reactions

In recent years, the chemistry of curved π-conjugated molecules has experienced a sharp rise. The inclusion of a heteroatom in the carbon network significantly affects its semiconducting properties. In this work, we computationally study the photoinduced electron transfer in a series of C₆₀ fullerene complexes with experimentally established nitrogen-doped molecular bowls. Our results demonstrate that introducing nitrogen into pentagonal rings of the bowl-shaped π-conjugated molecules and extending the π-conjugation can modulate their electron-transfer properties. Among the studied complexes, the hub-NCor⊃C₆₀ complex exhibits the most desirable combination of ultrafast charge separation and slow charge recombination, suggesting its potential use in photovoltaics.

Modular Nitrogen-Doped Concave Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons for High-Performance Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Tunable Emission Mechanisms

Although bowl‐shaped N‐pyrrolic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can achieve excellent electron‐donating ability, their application for optoelectronics is hampered by typically low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). To address this issue, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of curved and fully conjugated nitrogen‐doped PAHs. Through structural modifications to the electron‐accepting moiety, we are able to switch the mechanism of luminescence between thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP), and to tune the overall PLQY in the range from 9 % to 86 %. As a proof of concept, we constructed solid‐state organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) devices, which has not been explored to date in the context of concave N‐doped systems being TADF/RTP emitters. The best‐performing dye, possessing a peripheral trifluoromethyl group adjacent to the phenazine acceptor, exhibits yellow to orange emission with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 12 %, which is the highest EQE in a curved D‐A embedded N‐PAH to date.

Recent Advances in Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. The article covers literature published during the period of 2016-2020, providing an update to our first review of this topic (Chem. Rev. 2017, 117 (4), 3479-3716).

TMSOTf-Mediated Formal [4 + 2] Cycloaddition-Retro-aza-Michael Cascade of Vinylogous Carbamates for the Synthesis of Highly Fluorescent Pyridocarbazoles

Trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate mediated dimerization reaction of vinylogous carbamates of carbazoles gave highly fluorescent pyridocarbazoles through a Povarov-type formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition-retro-aza-Michael cascade. The developed strategy was used to access indolo pyridocarbazole and quinolizinocarbazolone in an expeditious manner. Various coupling reactions were successfully performed on synthesized pyridocarbazoles to study the effect of electronics of substitution on photophysical properties. Synthesized carbazoles possess excellent photophysical properties with high quantum yields (Φ_F). Fluorescent carbazole dicarboxylic acid showed potential as a pH probe to give a linear response to pH over a very wide range (7.0-3.0) reflecting high efficiency.

Synthesis and derivatization of hetera-buckybowls

Buckybowls have concave and convex surfaces with distinct π-electron cloud distribution, and consequently they show unique structural and electronic features as compared to planar aromatic polycycles. Doping the π-framework of buckybowls with heteroatoms is an efficient scheme to tailor inherent properties, because the nature of heteroatoms plays a pivotal role in the structural and electronic characteristics of the resulting hetera-buckybowls. The design, synthesis, and derivatization of hetera-buckybowls open an avenue for obtaining fascinating organic entities not only of fundamental importance but also of promising applications in optoelectronics. In this review, we summarize the advances in hetera-buckybowl chemistry, particularly the synthetic strategies toward these scaffolds.

Effect of Fusion Manner of Concave Molecules on the Properties of Resulting Nanoboats

A boat-shaped compound, which can be viewed as the fusion of two concave molecules with crossed quinacridone and indolocarbazole throughout, was synthesized and characterized. The investigation determined that the fusion manner of two concave molecules has little influence on the molecular curvature and aromaticity when compared with its congener containing crossed indolocarbazole throughout. The situation of carbonyl groups is critical in adjusting the electronic structure and physicochemical properties due to the fixed position of nitrogen atoms.

Access to a Phthalazine Derivative Through an Angular cis-Quinacridone

Intramolecular electrophilic cyclization of a bisanthranilate afforded an angular cis-quinacridone compound, which condensed with hydrazine to give a phthalazine derivative. A [2+2+2] cyclization reaction occurred at the C-N double bond position of phthalazine when reacted with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. The structures of these novel compounds were confirmed by crystallographic analysis. The phthalazine derivative decomposes back to quinacridone at ambient condition in the dark and as a solid with a half lifetime of about 22 months.

Modulating the properties of buckybowls containing multiple heteroatoms

Nitrogen-centered buckybowls with sulfur decoration at the rim were synthesized and characterized. The buckybowls demonstrate tunable properties depending on the state of the sulfur atom.

An Isosteric Triaza Analogue of a Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Monkey Saddle

Since a few years, the interest in negatively-curved fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has significantly increased. Recently, the first chiral negatively-curved PAH with the topology of a monkey saddle was introduced. Herein the synthesis of its triaza congener is reported. The influence of this CH↔N exchange on photophysical and electrochemical properties is studied as well as the isomerization process of the enantiomers. The aza analogue has a significantly higher inversion barrier, which makes it easier to handle at room temperature. All experimental results are underpinned by theoretical DFT calculations.

Embedding Heteroatoms and Adjacent Pentagons in Concave Molecules

Bowl-shaped molecules, which can be viewed as fragments of fullerenes, have been extensively studied owing to their interesting fundamental properties derived from their unique geometry, and the possibilities for their further functionalization, with potential applications in the field of materials science. Most of the reported concave compounds are based on corannulene or sumanene, the simplest representative fullerene subunits possessing isolated pentagons. Syntheses of concave molecules bearing adjacent pentagons have rarely been reported. Inspired by the structure of N-heterotriangulene, the construction of bowl-shaped compounds containing two fused pentagons and a central nitrogen atom is discussed. Further surface extension of such concave molecules can result in the formation of boat-shaped compounds containing embedded double isolated nitrogen atoms.

Synthesis of Pyrrolo[2,1,5-cd]indolizine Rings via Visible-Light-Induced Intermolecular [3+2] Cycloaddition of Indolizines and Alkynes

A range of indolizine smoothly underwent visible-light-induced intermolecular [3+2] annulations with internal alkynes to afford pyrrolo[2,1,5-cd]indolizine in good to excellent yields with high regioselectivity. Through this cascade reaction, a series of fluoroactive fused indolizines with a large π-system were conveniently synthesized. The usage of visible light as energy source with air as a stoichiometric oxidant under simple conditions makes this process attractive and practical.

A Nanoboat with Fused Concave N-Heterotriangulene

The surface extension of all-carbon based bowl-shaped molecules, such as corannulene and sumanene, to synthesize even larger buckybowls has been widely studied, leaving other concave compounds with heteroatoms less considered. Herein we present a highly curved molecule synthesized via stepwise cyclization of fjords of a bisacridone derivative. Crystallographic analysis unambiguously confirmed a boat-shaped structure with deformed bottom benzene ring. Theoretical calculation unravels an inversion process with an S-shaped transition structure rather than a planar one. The enlarged boat demonstrates interesting properties, such as red shifts in absorption and emission spectra, enhanced emission intensity, and convergent frontier molecular orbital energy levels, in comparison to the related concave N-heterotriangulene.

A Spherically Shielded Triphenylamine and Its Persistent Radical Cation

This work reports the design and synthesis of a sterically protected triphenylamine scaffold which undergoes one-electron oxidation to form an amine-centered radical cation of remarkable stability. Several structural adjustments were made to tame the inherent reactivity of the radical cation. First, the parent propeller-shaped triphenylamine was planarized with sterically demanding bridging units and, second, protecting groups were deployed to block the reactive positions. The efficiently shielded triphenylamine core can be reversibly oxidized at moderate potentials (+0.38 V, vs. Fc/Fc+ in CH2 Cl2 ). Spectroelectrochemistry and chemical oxidation studies were employed to monitor the evolution of characteristic photophysical features. To obtain a better understanding of the impact of one-electron oxidation on structural and electronic properties, joint experimental and computational studies were conducted, including X-ray structural analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The sterically shielded radical cation combines various desirable attributes: A characteristic and unobstructed absorption in the visible region, high stability which enables storage for weeks without spectroscopically traceable degradation, and a reliable oxidation/re-reduction process due to effective screening of the planarized triphenylamine core from its environment.

Heteroatom-bridged heterofluorenes: a theoretical study on molecular structures and optoelectronic properties
