High-Efficiency Gold Recovery Using Cucurbit[6]uril

Rapid Dissolution of Gold in Alcohols by In-Situ Generation of Halogens

The dissolution of elemental gold is a fundamental step in its recycling by hydrometallurgy but has a significant environmental impact due to the use of strong acids or highly toxic reagents. Herein, it is shown that mixtures of acetyl halides and hydrogen peroxide in alcohols promote the rapid room-temperature dissolution of gold by halogenation to form Au(III) metalates. After leaching, distillation of the alcohol and re-dissolution in dilute HCl, the gold was refined through its precipitation by a simple diamide ligand; this method was also applied to separate gold from a mixture of metals. The leaching process is rapid, avoids the use of highly toxic materials and corrosive acids, and can be integrated into selective separation processes, so has the potential to be used in the purification of gold from ores, spent catalysts, and electronic and nano-waste.

Formation of a Metallomacrocycle Possessing Nitrogen Donors Assembled in the Cavity and Unique Water Clusters

2,2'-Bipyridyl (bpy) is widely used as a chelating unit for metal complexation but is not usually considered as a hydrogen-bonding unit. This is because the metal-free bpy units are usually in a transoid conformation, and the two nitrogen lone pairs are pointed to the opposite sides. We now report a metallomacrocycle whose three metal-free bpy units are in a cisoid conformation and are fixed in the cavity. The complexation of nickel(II) only at the salen units of the triangular bpytrisalen ligand produced this rigid and planar macrocycle. Its cavity is surrounded by hydrogen-bond acceptors (N of bpy and O of salen), and it was found that unique pentagonal prism clusters of water molecules templated by the cavity were formed in the crystal. This study has not only increased the variation of the synthetic methodologies of multinuclear complexes but has also provided the structural platform on which multiple bpy units exert hydrogen-bonding functions.

Selective Gold Precipitation by a Tertiary Diamide Driven by Thermodynamic Control

The simple diamide ligand L was previously shown to selectively precipitate gold from acidic solutions typical of e-waste leach streams, with precipitation of gallium, iron, tin, and platinum possible under more forcing conditions. Herein, we report direct competition experiments to afford the order of selectivity. Thermal analysis indicates that the gold-, gallium-, and iron-containing precipitates present as the most thermodynamically stable structures at room temperature, while the tin-containing structure does not. Computational modeling established that the precipitation process is thermodynamically driven, with ion exchange calculations matching the observed experimental selectivity ordering. Calculations also show that the stretched ligand conformation seen in the X-ray crystal structure of the gold-containing precipitate is more strained than in the structures of the other metal precipitates, indicating that intermolecular interactions likely dictate the selectivity ordering. This was confirmed through a combination of Hirshfeld, noncovalent interaction (NCI), and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses, which highlight favorable halogen···halogen contacts between metalates and pseudo-anagostic C-H···metal interactions in the crystal structure of the gold-containing precipitate.

Selective removal of Cr2O72- in aqueous solution by nonporous pure crystals of cucurbit[6]uril

Cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) could serve as a selective absorbent for the toxic anion Cr2O72-, which was demonstrated by the results of UV-vis, ICP, XPS, SEM, and EDS experiments. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that capture capacity could be attributed to the outer-surface interactions of cucurbit[n]uril between Cr2O72- and the outer surface of Q[6].

Emerging sensing platforms based on Cucurbit[n]uril functionalized gold nanoparticles and electrodes

Cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s, n = 5-8, 10, and 14), synthetic macrocycles with unique host-guest properties, have triggered increasing research interest in recent years. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and electrodes stand out as exceptional substrates for sensing due to their remarkable physicochemical characteristics. Coupling the CB[n]s with Au NPs and electrodes has enabled the development of emerging sensing platforms for various promising applications. However, monitoring the behavior of analytes at the single-molecule level is currently one of the most challenging topics in the field of CB[n]-based sensing. Constructing supramolecular junctions in a sensing platform provides an ideal structure for single-molecule analysis, which can provide insights for a fundamental understanding of supramolecular interactions and chemical reactions and guide the design of sensing applications. This feature article outlines the progress in the preparation of the CB[n] functionalized Au NPs and Au electrodes, as well as the construction and application of supramolecular junctions in sensing platforms, based on the methods of recognition tunneling (RT), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS), and electrochemical sensing (ECS). A brief perspective on the future development of and challenges in CB[n] mediated sensing platforms is also covered.

Applications of macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry

Macrocyclic molecules have been used in various fields owing to their guest binding properties. Macrocycle-based host-guest chemistry in solution can allow for precise control of complex formation. Although solution-phase host-guest complexes are easily prepared, their limited stability and processability prevent widespread application. Extending host-guest chemistry from solution to the solid state results in complexes that are generally more robust, enabling easier processing and broadened applications. Macrocyclic compounds in the solid state can encapsulate guests with larger affinities than their soluble counterparts. This is crucial for use in applications such as separation science and devices. In this Review, we summarize recent progress in macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry and discuss the basic physical chemistry of these complexes. Representative macrocycles and their solid-state complexes are explored, as well as potential applications. Finally, perspectives and challenges are discussed.

Efficient Recycling of Gold and Copper from Electronic Waste by Selective Precipitation

The recycling of metals from electronic waste (e-waste) using efficient, selective, and sustainable processes is integral to circular economy and net-zero aspirations. Herein, we report a new method for the selective precipitation of metals such as gold and copper that offsets the use of organic solvents that are traditionally employed in solvent extraction processes. We show that gold can be selectively precipitated from a mixture of metals in hydrochloric acid solution using triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO), as the complex [(TPPO)4 (H5 O2 )][AuCl4 ]. By tuning the acid concentration, controlled precipitation of gold, zinc and iron can be achieved. We also show that copper can be selectively precipitated using 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid (2,3-PDCA), as the complex [Cu(2,3-PDCA-H)2 ]n  ⋅ 2n(H2 O). The combination of these two precipitation methods resulted in the recovery of 99.5 % of the Au and 98.5 % of the Cu present in the connector pins of an end-of-life computer processing unit. The selectivity of these precipitation processes, combined with their straightforward operation and the ability to recycle and reuse the precipitants, suggests potential industrial uses in the purification of gold and copper from e-waste.

Novel Biocompatible Trianglamine Networks for Efficient Iodine Capture

Herein, we report for the first time a biocompatible cross-linked trianglamine (Δ) network for the efficient iodine removal from the vapor phase, water, and seawater. In the vapor phase, the cross-linked network could capture 6 g g-1 of iodine, ranking among the most performant materials for iodine vapor capture. In the liquid phase, this cross-linked network is also capable of capturing iodine at high rates from aqueous media (water and seawater). This network displayed fast adsorption kinetics, and they are fully recyclable. This study reveals the high affinity of iodine for the intrinsic cavity of the trianglamine. The synthesized materials are extremely interesting since they are environmentally friendly and inexpensive and the synthesis could easily be scaled up to be used as the material of choice in response to accidents in the nuclear industry.

Material Design Strategies for Recovery of Critical Resources from Water

Population growth, urbanization, and decarbonization efforts are collectively straining the supply of limited resources that are necessary to produce batteries, electronics, chemicals, fertilizers, and other important products. Securing the supply chains of these critical resources via the development of separation technologies for their recovery represents a major global challenge to ensure stability and security. Surface water, groundwater, and wastewater are emerging as potential new sources to bolster these supply chains. Recently, a variety of material-based technologies have been developed and employed for separations and resource recovery in water. Judicious selection and design of these materials to tune their properties for targeting specific solutes is central to realizing the potential of water as a source for critical resources. Here, the materials that are developed for membranes, sorbents, catalysts, electrodes, and interfacial solar steam generators that demonstrate promise for applications in critical resource recovery are reviewed. In addition, a critical perspective is offered on the grand challenges and key research directions that need to be addressed to improve their practical viability.

Advanced stimuli-responsive membranes for smart separation

Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Handcuff-like metallo-pseudorotaxanes consisting of tiara[5]arene wheels and dimeric silver trifluoroacetate axles

The complexation between tiara[5]arene (T[5]) and silver trifluoroacetate affords a binuclear metallo-pseudorotaxane on account of multiple endo-cavity Ag^I η²-arene interactions. Furthermore, two such enantiomeric [(CF₃CO₂Ag)₂⊂T[5]] complexes are bridged by an extra (CF₃CO₂Ag)₂ dimer through exo-wall Ag^I η²-arene coordination, resulting in a unique handcuff metallo-bis-pseudorotaxane structure in the solid state.

Rapid Dissolution of Noble Metals in Organic Solvents

The dissolution of elemental noble metals (NMs) such as gold, platinum, palladium, and copper is necessary for their recycling but carries a high environmental burden due to the use of strong acids and toxic reagents. Herein, a new approach was developed for the rapid dissolution of elemental NMs in organic solvents using mixtures of triphenylphosphine dichloride or oxalyl chloride and hydrogen peroxide, forming metal chloride salts directly. Almost quantitative dissolution of metallic Au, Pd, and Cu was observed within minutes at room temperature. For Pt, dissolution was achieved, albeit more slowly, using the chlorinating oxidant alone but was inhibited on addition of hydrogen peroxide. After leaching, transfer of PtIV and PdII chloride salts from the organic phase into a 6 m HCl aqueous phase facilitated their separation by precipitation of PtIV using a simple diamide ligand. In contrast, the retention of AuIII chloridometalate in the organic phase allowed its selective separation from Ni and Cu from a leachate solution obtained from electronic CPUs. This new approach has potential application in the hydrometallurgical leaching and purification of NMs from ores, spent catalysts, and electronic and nano-wastes.

A label-free electrochemical sensor constructed with layer-by-layer assembly of GCE-AuNPs-Q[7]·HAuCl4 for detection of diphenylamine

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) including cucurbit[7]uril block (Q[7]·HAuCl₄) were employed to develop a diphenylamine (DPA) sensor in electrochemical method, the presence of HAuCl₄ improved the conductivity of the macrocyclic compound. To further enhance of the sensitivity, Au nanoparticles were inserted between the surface of glassy carbon electrode and Q[7]·HAuCl₄ MOFs (GCE-AuNPs-Q[7]·HAuCl₄). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were applied for evaluation on the electrochemical behavior. For the electrochemical inertness of DPA, a label-free electrochemical sensor in 5 mM K₃[Fe(CN)₆] solution was achieved, to produce a limit of detection as low as 4.6 µM in a linear range of 5-1000 µM with good reproducibility, high stability and acceptable anti-interference ability. Application of the proposed electrode for the quantitative determination of DPA in tap water and apple juice confirms its real value.

Tuneable separation of gold by selective precipitation using a simple and recyclable diamide

The efficient separation of metals from ores and secondary sources such as electronic waste is necessary to realising circularity in metal supply. Precipitation processes are increasingly popular and are reliant on designing and understanding chemical recognition to achieve selectivity. Here we show that a simple tertiary diamide precipitates gold selectively from aqueous acidic solutions, including from aqua regia solutions of electronic waste. The X-ray crystal structure of the precipitate displays an infinite chain of diamide cations interleaved with tetrachloridoaurate. Gold is released from the precipitate on contact with water, enabling ligand recycling. The diamide is highly selective, with its addition to 29 metals in 2 M HCl resulting in 70% gold uptake and minimal removal of other metals. At 6 M HCl, complete collection of gold, iron, tin, and platinum occurs, demonstrating that adaptable selective metal precipitation is controlled by just one variable. This discovery could be exploited in metal refining and recycling processes due to its tuneable selectivity under different leaching conditions, the avoidance of organic solvents inherent to biphasic extraction, and the straightforward recycling of the precipitant.

Selective Separation of Hexachloroplatinate(IV) Dianions Based on Exo-Binding with Cucurbit[6]uril

The recognition and separation of anions attracts attention from chemists, materials scientists, and engineers. Employing exo-binding of artificial macrocycles to selectively recognize anions remains a challenge in supramolecular chemistry. We report the instantaneous co-crystallization and concomitant co-precipitation between [PtCl₆ ]^2- dianions and cucurbit[6]uril, which relies on the selective recognition of these dianions through noncovalent bonding interactions on the outer surface of cucurbit[6]uril. The selective [PtCl₆ ]^2- dianion recognition is driven by weak [Pt-Cl⋅⋅⋅H-C] hydrogen bonding and [Pt-Cl⋅⋅⋅C=O] ion-dipole interactions. The synthetic protocol is highly selective. Recognition is not observed in combinations between cucurbit[6]uril and six other Pt- and Pd- or Rh-based chloride anions. We also demonstrated that cucurbit[6]uril is able to separate selectively [PtCl₆ ]^2- dianions from a mixture of [PtCl₆ ]^2- , [PdCl₄ ]^2- , and [RhCl₆ ]^3- anions. This protocol could be exploited to recover platinum from spent vehicular three-way catalytic converters and other platinum-bearing metal waste.

Acyclic Cucurbituril Featuring Pendant Cyclodextrins

We report the design and synthesis of the acyclic cucurbit[n]uril-β-cyclodextrin chimeric host H1. The goal of the study is to deepen the cavity of the receptor to allow β-CD complexation of moieties on the guest (especially fentanyl) that protrude from the cavity of the primary acyclic CB[n] binding site to enhance binding affinity and deliver new supramolecular antidotes for fentanyl intoxication. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to deduce the geometry of the complexes between H1 and H2 and the guest panel (G1 - G8 and fentanyl) whereas isothermal titration calorimetry was used to determine the thermodynamic parameters of complexation. Hosts H1 and H2 retain the essential molecular recognition features of CB[n] receptors, but chimeric host H1 binds slightly stronger toward the guest panel than H2 for reasons that remain unclear. Compared to tetraanionic hosts M1 and M2, the dianionic hosts H1 and H2 are less potent receptors which reflects the importance of electrostatic (ion-ion and ion-dipole) interactions in this series of hosts. The work highlights the challenges inherent in the optimization of binding affinity of hosts as potential supramolecular antidotes.

Origins of Clustering of Metalate-Extractant Complexes in Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Effective and energy-efficient separation of precious and rare metals is very important for a variety of advanced technologies. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a relatively less energy intensive separation technique, widely used in separation of lanthanides, actinides, and platinum group metals (PGMs). In LLE, the distribution of an ion between an aqueous phase and an organic phase is determined by enthalpic (coordination interactions) and entropic (fluid reorganization) contributions. The molecular scale details of these contributions are not well understood. Preferential extraction of an ion from the aqueous phase is usually correlated with the resulting fluid organization in the organic phase, as the longer-range organization increases with metal loading. However, it is difficult to determine the extent to which organic phase fluid organization causes, or is caused by, metal loading. In this study, we demonstrate that two systems with the same metal loading may impart very different organic phase organizations and investigate the underlying molecular scale mechanism. Small-angle X-ray scattering shows that the structure of a quaternary ammonium extractant solution in toluene is affected differently by the extraction of two metalates (octahedral PtCl₆^2- and square-planar PdCl₄^2-), although both are completely transferred into the organic phase. The aggregates formed by the metalate-extractant complexes (approximated as reverse micelles) exhibit a more long-range order (clustering) with PtCl₆^2- compared to that with PdCl₄^2-. Vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy and complementary atomistic molecular dynamics simulations on model Langmuir monolayers indicate that the two metalates affect the interfacial hydration structures differently. Furthermore, the interfacial hydration is correlated with water extraction into the organic phase. These results support a strong relationship between the organic phase organizational structure and the different local hydration present within the aggregates of metalate-extractant complexes, which is independent of metalate concentration.

Potential Applications of Cucurbit[n]urils and Their Derivatives in the Capture of Hazardous Chemicals

Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s) are a relatively young family of macrocycles, consisting of glycoluril units bridged by methylene groups, and their unique structures have attracted extensive attention from chemists in recent decades. Due to the presence of a rigid hydrophobic inner cavity and two polar outer portals lined with carbonyl groups, Q[n]s not only encapsulate guest species into the cavity, but also coordinate with metal ions/clusters. Considerable achievements have been obtained in the fields of Q[n]s-based host-guest chemistry, coordination chemistry, as well as the combination of host-guest and coordination chemistry. Furthermore, the outer surface of Q[n]s has been demonstrated to be capable of interacting with definite species to generate supramolecular architectures in recent years. With more in-depth research into Q[n]s, their application studies have also emerged as a hot topic. This Minireview focuses on recent advances in the potential applications of solid-state materials based on Q[n]s and their derivatives for the capture and adsorption of hazardous chemicals from a solution or a gas mixture.

Enhanced selectivity and stability towards CO2 reduction of sub-5 nm Au NPs derived from supramolecular assembly

We report three well-defined types of Au nanoparticles (NPs) protected by rigid macrocyclic cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) (CB[n]-Au), which are prepared via the supramolecular self-assembly of the precursors. CB[n]-Au shows excellent catalytic activity and selectivity, with a performance that can be maintained for up to 72 h in the electroreduction of CO₂ to CO. The effects of the structural features of different CB[n]s on the electrocatalytic performance of the Au NPs have been revealed for the first time.

Supramolecular Gold Stripping from Activated Carbon Using α-Cyclodextrin

We report the molecular recognition of the Au(CN)₂^- anion, a crucial intermediate in today's gold mining industry, by α-cyclodextrin. Three X-ray single-crystal superstructures-KAu(CN)₂⊂α-cyclodextrin, KAu(CN)₂⊂(α-cyclodextrin)₂, and KAg(CN)₂⊂(α-cyclodextrin)₂-demonstrate that the binding cavity of α-cyclodextrin is a good fit for metal-coordination complexes, such as Au(CN)₂^- and Ag(CN)₂^- with linear geometries, while the K⁺ ions fulfill the role of linking α-cyclodextrin tori together as a result of [K⁺···O] ion-dipole interactions. A 1:1 binding stoichiometry between Au(CN)₂^- and α-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution, revealed by ¹H NMR titrations, has produced binding constants in the order of 10⁴ M^-1. Isothermal calorimetry titrations indicate that this molecular recognition is driven by a favorable enthalpy change overcoming a small entropic penalty. The adduct formation of KAu(CN)₂⊂α-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution is sustained by multiple [C-H···π] and [C-H···anion] interactions in addition to hydrophobic effects. The molecular recognition has also been investigated by DFT calculations, which suggest that the 2:1 binding stoichiometry between α-cyclodextrin and Au(CN)₂^- is favored in the presence of ethanol. We have demonstrated that this molecular recognition process between α-cyclodextrin and KAu(CN)₂ can be applied to the stripping of gold from the surface of activated carbon at room temperature. Moreover, this stripping process is selective for Au(CN)₂^- in the presence of Ag(CN)₂^-, which has a lower binding affinity toward α-cyclodextrin. This molecular recognition process could, in principle, be integrated into commercial gold-mining protocols and lead to significantly reduced costs, energy consumption, and environmental impact.

Supramolecular Paradigm for Capture and Co-Precipitation of Gold(III) Coordination Complexes

A new supramolecular paradigm is presented for reliable capture and co-precipitation of haloauric acids (HAuX₄ ) from organic solvents or water. Two classes of acyclic organic compounds act as complementary receptors (tectons) by forming two sets of directional non-covalent interactions, (a) hydrogen bonding between amide (or amidinium) NH residues and the electronegative X ligands on the AuX₄ ^- , and (b) electrostatic stacking of the electron deficient Au center against the face of an aromatic surface. X-ray diffraction analysis of four co-crystal structures reveals the additional common feature of proton bridged carbonyls as a new and predictable supramolecular design element that creates one-dimensional polymers linked by very short hydrogen bonds (CO⋅⋅⋅OC distance <2.5 Å). Two other co-crystal structures show that the amidinium-π⋅⋅⋅XAu interaction will reliably engage AuX₄ ^- with high directionality. These acyclic compounds are very attractive as co-precipitation agents within new "green" gold recovery processes. They also have high potential as tectons for controlled self-assembly or co-crystal engineering of haloaurate composites. More generally, the supramolecular paradigm will facilitate the design of next-generation receptors or tectons with high affinity for precious metal square planar coordination complexes for use in advanced materials, nanotechnology, or medicine.

Advances in applied supramolecular technologies

Supramolecular chemistry has successfully built a foundation of fundamental understanding. However, with this now achieved, we show how this area of chemistry is moving out of the laboratory towards successful commercialisation.

Macrocyclic and acyclic supramolecular elements for co-precipitation of square-planar gold(iii) tetrahalide complexes
