Catalytic Activation of Cobalt Doping Sites in ZIF-71-Coated ZnO Nanorod Arrays for Enhancing Gas-Sensing Performance to Acetone

Efficient mixed-potential acetone sensor with yttria-stabilized zirconia and porous Co3O4 nanofoam sensing electrode for hazardous gas monitoring and breath analysis

For hazardous gas monitoring and non-invasive diagnosis of diabetes using breath analysis, porous foams assembled by Co3O4 nanoparticles were designed as sensing electrode materials to fabricate efficient yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based acetone sensors. The sensitivity of the sensors was improved by varying the sintering temperature to regulate the morphology. Compared to other materials sintered at different temperatures, the porous Co3O4 nanofoams sintered at 800 °C exhibited the highest electrochemical catalytic activity during the electrochemical test. The response of the corresponding Co3O4-based sensor to 10 ppm acetone was -77.2 mV and it exhibited fast response and recovery times. Moreover, the fabricated sensor achieved a low detection limit of 0.05 ppm and a high sensitivity of -56 mV/decade in the acetone concentration range of 1-20 ppm. The sensor also exhibited excellent repeatability, acceptable selectivity, good O2/humidity resistance, and long-term stability during continuous measurements for over 30 days. Moreover, the fabricated sensor was used to determine the acetone concentration in the exhaled breaths of patients with diabetic ketosis. The results indicated that it could distinguish between healthy individuals and patients with diabetic ketosis, thereby proving its abilities to diagnose and monitor diabetic ketosis. Based on its excellent sensitivity and exhaled breath measurement results, the developed sensor has broad application prospects.

Recent Advances in Structure Design and Application of Metal Halide Perovskite-Based Gas Sensor

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are emerging gas-sensing materials and have attracted considerable attention in gas sensors due to their unique bandgap structure and tunable optoelectronic properties. The past decade has witnessed significant developments in the gas-sensing field; however, their intrinsic structural instability and ambiguous gas-sensing mechanisms hamper their practical applications. Herein, we summarize the recent advances in MHP-based gas sensors. The physicochemical properties of MHPs are discussed at first. The structure design, including dimension design and engineering design, is overviewed as well as their fabrication methods, and we put forward our insights into the gas-sensing mechanism of MHPs. It is believed that enhanced understanding of gas-sensing mechanisms of MHPs are helpful for their application as gas-sensing materials, and structure design can enhance their stability, sensing sensitivity, and selectivity to target gases as gas sensors. Subsequently, the latest developments in MHP-based gas sensors are summarized according to their different application scenarios. Finally, we conclude with the current status and challenges in this field and propose future perspectives.

Highly sensitive volatile organic compounds monitoring enabling by silver-nanowire@metal-organic frameworks core-shell heterostructure

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise as advanced chemical sensing materials due to their high surface area and tunable surface chemistry. However, due to the inherent conductivity, building a highly sensitive MOFs-based gas sensor for real-time monitoring hazardous gas operated at room temperature (RT) is still a huge challenge. Herein, an in-situ anchoring strategy is proposed to construct a 1D-0D core-shell heterostructure by integrating silver nanowires (AgNWs) with highly conductivity and Zn-MOF with high specific surface area. The incorporation of AgNWs establishes a highly conductive network architecture to facilitate rapid charge transport while preventing the Zn-MOF nanoparticles from agglomeration, ensuring an effective transmission highway for target gas molecules. Meanwhile, the Zn-MOF nanoparticles induce remarkable absorption capacity and contribute high gas response. By strategically amalgamating the inherent distinctive virtues of the individual components and capitalizing on the synergistic benefits arising from the composite, the sensors hinged upon the refined AgNWs@Zn-MOF (A@Z) heterostructure unveiled remarkable response value of 27 to 20 ppm ethanol at RT, accompanied by a low detection limit of 1 ppm. Moreover, the A@Z sensor further showcases superior selectivity and repeatability. This work offers a fresh standpoint for the fabrication of MOF-based heterostructures, fostering advancements in diverse applications.

Advancements in MXene Composite Materials for Wearable Sensors: A Review

In recent years, advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), manufacturing processes, and material synthesis technologies have positioned flexible sensors as critical components in wearable devices. These developments are propelling wearable technologies based on flexible sensors towards higher intelligence, convenience, superior performance, and biocompatibility. Recently, two-dimensional nanomaterials known as MXenes have garnered extensive attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, outstanding electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, and abundant surface functional groups. These notable attributes confer significant potential on MXenes for applications in strain sensing, pressure measurement, gas detection, etc. Furthermore, polymer substrates such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyurethane (PU), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are extensively utilized as support materials for MXene and its composites due to their light weight, flexibility, and ease of processing, thereby enhancing the overall performance and wearability of the sensors. This paper reviews the latest advancements in MXene and its composites within the domains of strain sensors, pressure sensors, and gas sensors. We present numerous recent case studies of MXene composite material-based wearable sensors and discuss the optimization of materials and structures for MXene composite material-based wearable sensors, offering strategies and methods to enhance the development of MXene composite material-based wearable sensors. Finally, we summarize the current progress of MXene wearable sensors and project future trends and analyses.

Designing State-of-the-Art Gas Sensors: From Fundamentals to Applications

Gas sensors are crucial in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. Due to the rising demand for precise and reliable gas detection, there is a rising demand for cutting-edge gas sensors that possess exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Due to their tunable electrical properties, high-density surface-active sites, and significant surface-to-volume ratio, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in this regard. The traditional gas sensors utilize homogeneous material for sensing where the adsorbed surface oxygen species play a vital role in their sensing activity. However, their performance for selective gas sensing is still unsatisfactory because the employed high temperature leads to the poor stability. The heterostructures nanomaterials can easily tune sensing performance and their different energy band structures, work functions, charge carrier concentration and polarity, and interfacial band alignments can be precisely designed for high-performance selective gas sensing at low temperature. In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms. Further, we highlight the existed challenges in semiconductor gas sensing. In addition, we review the recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for improvement of the gas sensing performance are discussed.

Mixed Potential Type Acetone Sensor with Ultralow Detection Limit for Diabetic Ketosis Breath Analysis

Breath analysis using gas sensors is an emerging method for disease screening and diagnosis. Since it is closely related to the lipid metabolism and blood ketone concentration of the body, the detection of acetone content in exhaled breath is helpful for the screening and monitoring of diabetes and ketosis. The development of an acetone sensor with high selectivity, stability, and low detection limit has been the research focus for this purpose. Here, we developed a mixed potential type acetone sensor based on Gd2Zr2O7 solid electrolyte and CoSb2O6 sensing electrode. The developed sensor exhibits an extremely low detection limit of 10 ppb, enabling linear detection for acetone in an extremely wide range of 10 ppb-100 ppm. The good results of systematic evaluation on selectivity, repeatability, and stability prove the superior reliability of the sensor, which is a prerequisite for the application in actual breath detection. The ability of the sensor to distinguish healthy people from diabetic ketosis patients was confirmed by using the sensor to detect the breath of healthy people and diabetic patients, proving the feasibility of the sensor in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic ketosis.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework as humidity-resistant solid state-chemiresistive gas sensors: A review

With significant technological advances, solid-state gas sensors have been extensively applied to detect toxic gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in confined areas such as indoor environments and industries and to identify gas leakage. Semiconductor metal oxides are the primary sensing materials, although their major drawbacks include a lack of sensitivity, poor performance at high humidity, and operating at high temperatures ranging between 140 and 400 °C. Recently, the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) in gas sensors has received considerable attention as a promising material to overcome the drawbacks possessed by semiconductor metal oxide-based gas sensors. Because of their unique properties, including size tunability, high surface area, and stability in humidity, ZIF becomes a preferred candidate for sensing materials. The use of ZIF materials in gas sensors is limited because of their high-temperature operation and low gas responses. This review outlines the strategies and developments in the utilization of ZIF-based materials in gas sensing. The significant influence of the addition of carbon additives in ZIF materials for temperature operation sensors is discussed. Finally, ZIF-carbon additives and SMO@ZIFs/carbon additives are the proposed materials to be studied for future prospects for the detection of VOCs at low temperatures and exhibiting good selectivity towards the gas of interest.

MOF-Based Chemiresistive Gas Sensors: Toward New Functionalities

The sensing performances of gas sensors must be improved and diversified to enhance quality of life by ensuring health, safety, and convenience. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit an extremely high surface area, abundant porosity, and unique surface chemistry, provide a promising framework for facilitating gas-sensor innovations. Enhanced understanding of conduction mechanisms of MOFs has facilitated their use as gas-sensing materials, and various types of MOFs have been developed by examining the compositional and morphological dependences and implementing catalyst incorporation and light activation. Owing to their inherent separation and absorption properties and catalytic activity, MOFs are applied as molecular sieves, absorptive filtering layers, and heterogeneous catalysts. In addition, oxide- or carbon-based sensing materials with complex structures or catalytic composites can be derived by the appropriate post-treatment of MOFs. This review discusses the effective techniques to design optimal MOFs, in terms of computational screening and synthesis methods. Moreover, the mechanisms through which the distinctive functionalities of MOFs as sensing materials, heterostructures, and derivatives can be incorporated in gas-sensor applications are presented.

Low Detection Limit and High Sensitivity 2-Butanone Gas Sensor Based on ZnO Nanosheets Decorated by Co Nanoparticles Derived from ZIF-67

2-butanone has been certified to cause potential harm to the human body, environment, etc. Therefore, achieving a method for the high sensitivity and low limit detection of 2-butanone is of great significance. To achieve this goal, this article uses ZIF-67 prepared by a precipitation method as a cobalt source, and then prepares cobalt-modified zinc oxide nanosheets through a hydrothermal method. The microstructure of the materials was observed by SEM, EDS, TEM, HRTEM, XPS and XRD. The test data display that the sensor ZC2 can produce a high response (2540) to 100 ppm 2-butanone at 270 °C, which is 21 times higher than that of pure ZnO materials. Its detection limit is also optimized to 24 ppb. The sensor (ZC2) also excels in these properties: selectivity, repeatability and stability over 30 days. Further analysis indicates that the synergistic and catalytic effects of p-n heterojunction are the key sources for optimizing the performance of sensors for detecting 2-butanone.

Fast and High-Performance Self-Powered Photodetector Based on the ZnO/Metal-Organic Framework Heterojunction

Electrical conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs) are emerging as an appealing class of highly tailorable electrically conducting materials with potential applications in optoelectronics. Here, we in situ grew nickel hexahydroxytriphenylene (Ni-CAT) on the surface of ZnO nanorods (NRs). The self-powered photodetectors (PDs) were fabricated with heterojunctions formed at the interface of ZnO NRs and Ni-CAT. With this, the built-in electric field (BEF) can effectively separate the photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhance the photoresponse. We observe that the PDs based on hybrid ZnO/Ni-CAT with 3 h of growth time (ZnO/Ni-CAT-3) show good photoresponse (137 μA/W) with the fast rise (3 ms) and decay time (50 ms) under 450 nm light illumination without biased voltage. This work provides a facile and controllable method for the growth of the ZnO/Ni-CAT heterojunction with an effective BEF zone, which will benefit their optoelectronic applications.

A humidity-resistant and room temperature carbon soot@ZIF-67 composite sensor for acetone vapour detection

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), and the CNPs@ZIF-67 composite were prepared and used to fabricate sensors for the detection of acetone vapour. The prepared materials were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The sensors were tested using an LCR meter under the resistance parameter. It was found that the ZIF-67 sensor did not respond at room temperature, the CNP sensor had a non-linear response to all analytes, and the CNPs/ZIF-67 sensor had an excellent linear response to acetone vapour and was less sensitive to 3-pentanone, 4-methyl-1-hexene, toluene and cyclohexane vapours. However, it was found that ZIF-67 improves carbon soot sensor sensitivity by 155 times, wherein the sensitivity of the carbon soot sensor and carbon soot@ZIF-67 sensor on acetone vapour was found to be 0.0004 and 0.062 respectively. In addition, the sensor was found to be insensitive to humidity and the limit of detection was 484 ppb at room temperature.

Application of Metal–Organic Framework in Diagnosis and Treatment of Diabetes

Diabetes-related chronic wounds are often accompanied by a poor wound-healing environment such as high glucose, recurrent infections, and inflammation, and standard wound treatments are fairly limited in their ability to heal these wounds. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed to improve therapeutic outcomes due to their ease of engineering, surface functionalization, and therapeutic properties. In this review, we summarize the different synthesis methods of MOFs and conduct a comprehensive review of the latest research progress of MOFs in the treatment of diabetes and its wounds. State-of-the-art in vivo oral hypoglycemic strategies and the in vitro diagnosis of diabetes are enumerated and different antimicrobial strategies (including physical contact, oxidative stress, photothermal, and related ions or ligands) and provascular strategies for the treatment of diabetic wounds are compared. It focuses on the connections and differences between different applications of MOFs as well as possible directions for improvement. Finally, the potential toxicity of MOFs is also an issue that we cannot ignore.

Selectivity of a ZnO@ZIF-71@PDMS Nanorod Array Gas Sensor Enhanced by Coating a Polymer Selective Separation Membrane

It is important for noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes to develop acetone gas sensors with high selectivity. ZnO@ZIF-71 has been reported as a highly sensitive and selective gas sensor on acetone detection. However, it is difficult to exclude the interference with similar molecular sizes gas in the gas-sensing process, like ethanol. To solve this problem, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was synthesized on the surface of ZnO@ZIF-71 to form a ZnO@ZIF-71@PDMS sensor by vapor deposition. The new sensor shows inert response to ethanol and effective response to acetone simultaneously. The PDMS membrane acts as a molecular sieve, which shows the acetone selectivity performance and can totally eliminate the response to low concentration ethanol at low temperature. Theory calculations and solubility test are also employed to prove the role PDMS plays in this process. It demonstrated that the acetone selectivity performance comes from the hydrogen bond interaction between the ethanol gas molecules and PDMS, which increases difficulty for ethanol gas molecules to penetrate the PDMS membrane. Further, this work provides a new method for enhancing gas-sensing selectivity and promoting for miniaturization of gas sensors.

Chemical Enhancement Effect of Icotinib-Au Complex Studied by Combined Density Functional Theory and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Icotinib is an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The charge transfer effect between gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and icotinib molecules can be used as a model to study the adsorption mechanism between molecules and metal. The adsorption of icotinib on the AuNP surface was confirmed by UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments. To explain the nature of chemisorption between icotinib and AuNPs from a theoretical perspective, the molecular correlation properties of the complex model of icotinib-Au₆ were studied by the density functional theory method. By studying the molecular electrostatic potential of an icotinib molecule, four potential binding sites of the icotinib molecule were predicted. The calculation results of binding energy showed that the complex formed by chemisorption of icotinib through acetylene group and Au₆ was the most stable one. The molecular frontier orbitals of icotinib and icotinib-Au₆ confirmed that the charge transfer effect occurred on the acetylene group, benzene ring, and quinazoline ring of the icotinib molecule. The Herzberg-Teller surface selection rule was used to explain selective enhancement in the theoretically calculated Raman spectra. By comparing the spectra of theory and experiment, the cause of spectral peak shift and broadening that appeared in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectrum compared with the normal Raman spectrum was explained as well. This work would contribute to the development and application of the icotinib-Au drug carrier system.

Ultrasensitive ppb-level trimethylamine gas sensor based on p-n heterojunction of Co3O4/WO3

Trace poisonous and harmful gases in the air have been harming and affecting people's health for a long time. At present, effective and accurate detection of ppb-level harmful gas is still a bottleneck to be overcome. Herein, we report a ppb-level triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor based on p-n heterojunction of Co₃O₄/WO₃, which is prepared with ZIF-67 as the precursor and provides Co₃O₄deposited tungsten oxide flower-like structure. Due to the introduction of Co₃O₄and the 3D flower-like structure of WO₃, the Co₃O₄/WO₃-2 gas sensor shows excellent gas sensing performance (1101 for 10 ppm at 240 °C), superb selectivity, good long-term stability and linear response for TEA concentration. Moreover, the experimental results indicate that the Co₃O₄/WO₃-2 gas sensor also possesses a good response to 50 ppb TEA, in fact, the theoretical limit of detection is 0.6 ppb. Co₃O₄not only improves the efficiency of electron separation/transport, but also accelerates the oxidation rate of TEA. This method of synthesizing p-n heterojunction with ZIF as the precursor provides a new idea and method for the preparation of low detection limit gas sensors.

Tunable resistance of MOFs films via an anion exchange strategy for advanced gas sensing

Because of their ultra-high surface area, large porosity and excellent structural tailorability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as outstanding candidates among sensing materials for hazardous gas detection. However, most of MOFs-based sensing films show weak film adhesion and low conductivity due to the poor formation ability of MOFs films by traditional sensor fabrication methods as well as the intrinsic insulating character of these MOFs. In this work, we propose a novel strategy to directly grow robust gas-sensing films based on pristine MOFs arrays (ZIF-67 nanosheets) in-situ on the surface of ceramic substrates. To improve the conductivity of MOFs arrays, anion-exchange method is applied to couple Prussian blue analogue (PBA) on the surface of ZIF-67 arrays. Structural characterization revealed that this permutation reaction can significantly improve the conductivity of the MOF films while their sheet-like structures can be mainly remained. Benefiting from the robust structure and improved conductivity, the as-designed ZIF-67/PBA films exhibited superior sensing performances such as good reproducibility, high response value (R_g/R_a=11.7), and fast response/recovery speed (5/182 s) towards triethylamine. This work provides a new strategy to fabricate MOFs gas sensors and paves a new way to modulate the conductivity of MOF films.

Application of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Composites for Gas Sensing and Effects of Synthesis Strategies on Gas-Sensitive Performance

Gas sensing materials, such as semiconducting metal oxides (SMOx), carbon-based materials, and polymers have been studied in recent years. Among of them, SMOx-based gas sensors have higher operating temperatures; sensors crafted from carbon-based materials have poor selectivity for gases and longer response times; and polymer gas sensors have poor stability and selectivity, so it is necessary to develop high-performance gas sensors. As a porous material constructed from inorganic nodes and multidentate organic bridging linkers, the metal-organic framework (MOF) shows viable applications in gas sensors due to its inherent large specific surface area and high porosity. Thus, compounding sensor materials with MOFs can create a synergistic effect. Many studies have been conducted on composite MOFs with three materials to control the synergistic effects to improve gas sensing performance. Therefore, this review summarizes the application of MOFs in sensor materials and emphasizes the synthesis progress of MOF composites. The challenges and development prospects of MOF-based composites are also discussed.

0D/2D CdS/ZnO composite with n-n heterojunction for efficient detection of triethylamine

It is imperative to seek for novel materials with pronounced gas sensing performance towards triethylamine for the sake of human health. Herein, we successfully fabricate an outstanding triethylamine sensor based on CdS/ZnO composite with 0D/2D structure, which are prepared by in-situ growth of CdS quantum dots on ultra-thin ZnO nanosheets. The ratios between the two ingredients are adjusted and their effect is evaluated. The optimal sample exhibits the lowest operating temperature of 200 °C, the highest response value of ~20 and the fastest response time of 2 s. Besides, it also has the virtues of durable stability, excellent selectivity and superior anti-interference ability. The mechanism behind the aforementioned intriguing performance is investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Kelvin probe and density function theory (DFT) simulation. All the results verify that the enhanced gas sensing properties are derived from splendid 0D/2D structure, n-n heterojunction and large specific surface area. Additionally, this study opens an avenue for designing sensors with 0D/2D structure.

Construction of a Stable Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework as a Luminescent Probe for Rapid Naked-Eye Recognition of Fe3+ and Acetone

Four lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), namely {[Me2NH2][LnL]·2H2O}n (Ln = Eu 1, Tb 2, Dy 3, Gd 4), have been constructed from a new tetradentate ligand 1-(3,5-dicarboxylatobenzyl)-3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid (H4L). These isostructural Ln-MOFs, crystallizing in the monoclinic P21/c space group, feature a 3D structure with 7.5 Å × 9.8 Å channels along the b axis and the point symbol of {410.614.84} {45.6}2. The framework shows high air and hydrolytic stability, which can keep stable after exposed to humid air for 30 days or immersed in water for seven days. Four MOFs with different lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, and Gd3+) ions exhibit red, green, yellow, and blue emissions, respectively. The Tb-MOF emitting bright green luminescence can selectively and rapidly (<40 s) detect Fe3+ in aqueous media via a fluorescence quenching effect. The detection shows excellent anti-inference ability toward many other cations and can be easily recognized by naked eyes. In addition, it can also be utilized as a rapid fluorescent sensor to detect acetone solvent as well as acetone vapor. Similar results of sensing experiments were observed from Eu-MOF. The sensing mechanism are further discussed.
