Rubber Recycling: Mending the Interface between Ground Rubber Particles and Virgin Rubber

A Study on the Preparation of a Vulcanizing Mixture and Its Application in Natural Rubber Latex

The traditional preparation process of natural rubber latex requires tedious treatment of a variety of rubber additives. In this paper, a new process of wet mixed grinding was used to prepare a reinforced vulcanization mixture and a rapid vulcanization effect. The effect of different amounts of vulcanization mixtures on the mechanical properties of natural latex film was studied, and the pre-vulcanization process of latex and the vulcanization process of film were optimized. The results showed that with the increase in the amount of vulcanization mixture, the tensile strength increased from 5.96 MPa to 29.28 MPa, and the tear strength increased from 7.59 kN/m to 52.81 kN/m. When the vulcanization temperature of the latex film is heated from 80 °C to 100 °C, the vulcanization time is shortened by 5~6 times. The new vulcanization mixture prepared in this work has the characteristics of simple production and fast vulcanization speed, which provides a new solution for the development of the latex product industry.

Chemically Recyclable and Biodegradable Vulcanized Rubber

The cross-linked nature of vulcanized rubbers as used in tire and many other applications prohibits an effective closed-loop mechanical or chemical recycling. Moreover, vulcanization significantly retards the material's biodegradation. Here, we report a recyclable and biodegradable rubber that is generated by the vulcanization of amorphous, unsaturated polyesters. The elastic material can be broken down via solvolysis into the underlying monomers. After removal of the vulcanized repeat units, the saturated monomers, constituting the major share of the material, can be recovered in overall recycling rates exceeding 90%. Respirometric biodegradation experiments by 13CO2 tracking under environmental conditions via the polyesters' diol monomer indicated depolymerization and partial mineralization of the vulcanized polyester rubbers.

Composite Flame Retardants Based on Conjugated Microporous Polymer Hollow Nanospheres with Excellent Flame Retardancy

The development of polymer materials with excellent flame retardancy has been paid increasing attention for their valuable applications in saving energy in modern architecture. Herein, conjugated microporous polymers hollow nanospheres (CMPs-HNS) were prepared by Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction with 1,3,5-triacetylenebenzene, 3-amino-2,6-dibromopyridine, and 2,4,6-tribromoaniline as building blocks using SiO2 nanoparticles as hard templates. To enhance the flame-retardant performance of the CMPs-HNS, antimony pentoxide solution (Sb2O5) and bisphenol A-bis (diphenyl phosphate) (BDP) were coated onto the as-prepared CMP-HNS (CMPs-HNS-BSb) by a simple immersion method. The peak heat release (pHRR) from microscale combustion colorimeter (MCC) of CMPs-HNS-BSb was 76.5 and 73.05 W g-1, respectively. By introducing CMPs-HNS-BSb into the epoxy resin (EP) matrix, the CMP2-HNS-BSb/EP (0.5) composites show that the pHRR values were 809.3 and 645.2 kW m-2, reduced by 21% as measured by conical calorimetry (CC), and total heat release (THR) reduced by 29.7%, going from 101 to 70.8 MJ/m2 when compared to the pure sample. Besides, total smoke production (TSP) reduced about 23.7%. The hollow structure can enhance the thermal insulation performance. As measured, the thermal conductivity of CMP1-HNS-BSb and CMP2-HNS-BSb is 0.044 and 0.048 W m-1 K-1. Based on the advantages of simple manufacture, superior thermal insulation, and flame retardancy, our CMPs-HNS-BSb/EP composites may find useful applications in various aspects such as building energy saving in future development.

Homogenizing Blends of Cross-linked Polymers by Interfacial Exchange Reactions

Obtaining homogeneous blends of two covalently cross-linked polymers by mechanical mixing is not possible due to their permanent network topologies. Here, we demonstrate an effective route to prepare polymer blends from the common cross-linked epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and epoxy resin vitrimer (EV) by mechanical mixing. Interfacial exchange reactions between these two networks occur by a dynamic transesterification. The as-prepared ENR-EV blends show excellent mechanical strength, extensibility, and thermal stability. Moreover, they also show typical vitrimeric properties, including self-healing, welding, and reprocessability. This work demonstrates a large-scale preparation of vitrimeric materials with high performance and versatility from commercially available polymers and affords a promising strategy to recycle both waste rubbers and resins.

GTR/NBR/Silica Composites Performance Properties as a Function of Curing System: Sulfur versus Peroxides

In this work, conventional sulfur and two types of organic peroxides (dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and di-(2-tert-butyl-peroxyisopropyl)-benzene (BIB)) curing systems were used to investigate the possibility for tailoring of the performance properties of GTR/NBR blends reinforced with a variable content of highly dispersive silica (0-30 phr). The curing characteristics, static mechanical and acoustical properties, swelling behavior, thermal stability, and microstructure of the prepared composites were investigated. The results show that regardless of the curing system used, increasing the content of highly dispersive silica resulted in the improvement of the mechanical properties of the studied materials. It was observed that sulfur-based systems are the best choice in terms of cross-linking efficiency determined based on torque increment and cross-link density parameters. However, further analysis of the physico-mechanical properties indicated that the cross-linking efficiency does not match the performance of specimens, and the materials obtained using organic peroxides show higher tensile properties. This is due to the improved physical interactions between the GTR/NBR matrix and highly dispersive silica when using peroxide systems. It was confirmed using the analysis of the Wolff activity coefficient, indicating the enhanced synergy.

Preparation of High-Performance Composite Hydrogel Reinforced by Hydrophilic Modified Waste Rubber Powder

In order to reduce the environmental pollution caused by waste rubber and to realize the recycling of resources, we proposed a facile method for the hydrophilic modification of waste rubber powder (HRP) and used it to reinforce a composite hydrogel. In the presence of toluene, dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO) diffused into the waste rubber powder. After the solvent was removed, BPO was adsorbed in the rubber powder, which was used to initiate the grafting polymerization of the acrylamide monomer on the rubber-water interface. As a result, the polyacrylamide (PAM) molecular chains were grafted onto the surface of the rubber powder to realize hydrophilic modification. The success of the grafting modification was confirmed by FTIR, contact angle testing, and thermogravimetric analysis. The hydrophilic modified waste rubber powder was used to reinforce the PAM hydrogel. Mechanical tests showed that the tensile strength and elongation at the break of the composite hydrogel reached 0.46 MPa and 1809%, respectively, which was much higher than those of pure PAM hydrogel. Such a phenomenon indicates that the waste rubber particles had a strengthening effect.
