Enhancing Selective Adsorption in a Robust Pillared-Layer Metal-Organic Framework via Channel Methylation for the Recovery of C2-C3 from Natural Gas

Topology Prediction of Gas-Separating Metal-Organic Frameworks with Low Symmetry Vertices

Topology serves as a blueprint for the construction of reticular structures such as metal-organic frameworks, especially for those based on building blocks with highly symmetrical shapes. However, it remains a challenge to predict the topology of the frameworks from less symmetrical units, because their corresponding vertex figures are largely deformed from the perfect geometries with no "default" net embedding. Furthermore, vertices involving flexible units may have multiple shape choices, and the competition among their designated topologies makes the structure prediction in large uncertainty. Herein, the deformation index is proposed to characterize the symmetry loss of the vertex figure by comparing it with its ideal geometry. The mathematical index is employed to predict the shapes of two in situ formed Co-based metalloligands (pseudo-tetrahedron and pseudo-square), which further dictate the framework topology (flu and scu) when they are joined with the [Zr6O8]-based cuboid units. The two frameworks with very similar constituents provide an ideal platform to investigate how the pore shapes and interconnectivity influence the gas separation. The net with cylindrical channels outperforms the other with discreate cages in C3H8/C2H6/CH4 separation, benefiting from the facile accessibility of its interaction sites to the guests imposed by the specific framework topology.

One Scalable and Stable Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Separation of CH4/N2 Mixture

Separating CH4 from coal bed methane is of great importance but challenging. Adsorption-based separation often suffers from low selectivity, poor stability, and difficulty to scale up. Herein, a stable and scalable metal-organic framework [MOF, CoNi(pyz-NH2)] with multiple CH4 binding sites was reported to efficiently separate the CH4/N2 mixture. Due to its suitable pore size and multiple CH4 binding sites, it exhibits excellent CH4/N2 selectivity (16.5) and CH4 uptake (35.9 cm3/g) at 273 K and 1 bar, which is comparable to that of the state-of-the-art MOFs. Theoretical calculations reveal that the high density of open metal sites and polar functional groups in the pores provide strong affinity to CH4 than to N2. Moreover, CoNi(pyz-NH2) displays excellent structural stability and can be scale-up synthesized (22.7 g). This work not only provides an excellent adsorbent but also provides important inspiration for the future design and preparation of porous adsorbents for separations.

Microporous Fluorinated MOF with Multiple Adsorption Sites for Efficient Recovery of C2H6 and C3H8 from Natural Gas

Purifying C2H6/C3H8 from a ternary natural gas mixture through adsorption separation is an important but challenging process in the petrochemical industry. To address this challenge, the industry is exploring effective strategies for designing high-performance adsorbents. In this study, we present two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), DMOF-TF and DMOF-(CF3)2, which have fluorinated pores obtained by substituting linker ligands in the host material. This pore engineering strategy not only provides suitable pore confinement but also enhances the adsorption capacities for C2H6/C3H8 by providing additional binding sites. Theoretical calculations and transient breakthrough experiments show that the introduction of F atoms not only improves the efficiency of natural gas separation but also provides multiple adsorption sites for C2H6/C3H8-framework interactions.

Ultramicroporous Lonsdaleite Topology MOF with High Propane Uptake and Propane/Methane Selectivity for Propane Capture from Simulated Natural Gas

Propane (C3H8) is a widely used fuel gas. Metal-organic framework (MOF) physisorbents that are C3H8 selective offer the potential to significantly reduce the energy footprint for capturing C3H8 from natural gas, where C3H8 is typically present as a minor component. Here we report the C3H8 recovery performance of a previously unreported lonsdaleite, lon, topology MOF, a chiral metal-organic material, [Ni(S-IEDC)(bipy)(SCN)]n, CMOM-7. CMOM-7 was prepared from three low-cost precursors: Ni(SCN)2, S-indoline-2-carboxylic acid (S-IDECH), and 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy), and its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Pure gas adsorption isotherms revealed that CMOM-7 exhibited high C3H8 uptake (2.71 mmol g-1) at 0.05 bar, an indication of a higher affinity for C3H8 than both C2H6 and CH4. Dynamic column breakthrough experiments afforded high purity C3H8 capture from a gas mixture comprising C3H8/C2H6/CH4 (v/v/v = 5/10/85). Despite the dilute C3H8 stream, CMOM-7 registered a high dynamic uptake of C3H8 and a breakthrough time difference between C3H8 and C2H6 of 79.5 min g-1, superior to those of previous MOF physisorbents studied under the same flow rate. Analysis of crystallographic data and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations provides insight into the two C3H8 binding sites in CMOM-7, both of which are driven by C-H···π and hydrogen bonding interactions.

Porous MOF Featuring 2D Intersecting Channels Based on a Pentanuclear Mn5(COO)10CO3 Cluster with Upgrading of Pipeline Natural Gas

Natural gas plays a crucial role in daily and industrial production, but the impurities contained in natural gas limit its further use. It is very important to develop adsorbents that can separate CH4 from multicomponent mixtures, but there are still many challenges and problems. Herein, a novel porous MOF {[Mn5(pbdia)2(CO3)(H2O)2] ↔ 5H2O ↔ 2DMF}n (pbdia = 2,2'-(5-carboxy-1,3-phenylene)bis(oxy) diterephthalic acid) was successfully synthesized based on a flexible pentacarboxylic acid ligand and a unique pentanuclear Mn5(COO)10CO3 cluster. The MOF reveals a 3D porous structure with 2D intersecting channels, which shows high C3H8, C2H6, and CO2 adsorption capacities and affinities over CH4. Moreover, the ideal adsorption solution theory selectivities of C3H8/CH4, C2H6/CH4, and CO2/CH4 can reach 263.0, 27.0, and 7.7, respectively, suggesting a potential for removing the low content of C3H8, C2H6, and CO2 from pipeline natural gas, which was further confirmed by breakthrough curves and GCMC simulations.

Halogen-modified metal-organic frameworks for efficient separation of alkane from natural gas

As a rich green energy source, natural gas is widely used in many fields such as the chemical industry, automobile energy, and daily life. However, it is very challenging to separate and recover C2H6 and C3H8 from natural gas. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an emerging type of multi-pore porous materials show huge potential in gas adsorption separation. Herein, we report pillar-layered MOFs, Ni (BDC)(DABCO)0.5 (DMOF-X), modified by halogen atoms (F, Cl, Br), and investigate their CH4/C2H6/C3H8 separation performance. The experimental results show that DMOF-Cl exhibited a extremely high adsorption capacity for C3H8 and C2H6. Under the conditions of 298 K and 100 kPa, the adsorption capacities for C3H8 and C2H6 on DMOF-Cl are as high as 6.23 and 4.94 mmol g-1, which are superior to the values for most of the porous materials that have been reported. In addition, DMOF-Cl also shows high C3H8/CH4 (5: 85, V/V) and C2H6/CH4 (10: 85, V/V) separation selectivities, with values of 130.9 and 12.5, respectively. Finally, DMOF-Cl also demonstrated great potential as an adsorbent for separating C3H8/C2H6/CH4.

Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks Prepared by Simultaneous Metal/Ligand Exchange for Enhanced C2-C3 Selective Recovery from Natural Gas

Recovering light alkanes from natural gas is a critical but challenging process in petrochemical production. Herein, we propose a postmodification strategy via simultaneous metal/ligand exchange to prepare multivariate metal-organic frameworks with enhanced capacity and selectivity of ethane (C2H6) and propane (C3H8) for their recovery from natural gas with methane (CH4) as the primary component. By utilizing the Kuratowski-type secondary building unit of CFA-1 as a scaffold, namely, {Zn5(OAc)4}6+, the Zn2+ metal ions and OAc- ligands were simultaneously exchanged by other transition metal ions and halogen ligands under mild conditions. Inspiringly, this postmodification treatment can give rise to improved capacity for C2H6 and C3H8 without a noticeable increase in CH4 uptake, and consequently, it resulted in significantly enhanced selectivity toward C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4. In particular, by adjusting the species and amount of the modulator, the optimal sample CFA-1-NiCl2-2.3 demonstrated the maximum capacities of C2H6 (5.00 mmol/g) and C3H8 (8.59 mmol/g), increased by 29 and 32% compared to that of CFA-1. Moreover, this compound exhibited excellent separation performance toward C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4, with high uptake ratios of 6.9 and 11.9 at 298 K and 1 bar, respectively, superior to the performance of a majority of the reported MOFs. Molecular simulations were applied to unravel the improved separation mechanism of CFA-1-NiCl2-2.3 toward C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4. Furthermore, remarkable thermal/chemical robustness, moderate isosteric heat, and fully reproducible breakthrough experiments were confirmed on CFA-1-NiCl2-2.3, indicating its great potential for light alkane recovery from natural gas.

Facile Synthesis of Ultra-microporous Pillar-Layered Metal-Organic Framework Membranes for Highly H2-Selective Separation

Recently, pillar-layered MOF materials have attracted much attention and shown great potential in separation application due to their fine pore size/channel and pore surface chemistry tunability and designability. In this work, we reported an effective and universal synthesis strategy for preparing ultra-microporous Ni-based pillar-layered MOF [Ni₂(L-asp)₂(bpy)] (Ni-LAB) and [Ni₂(L-asp)₂(pz)] (Ni-LAP) (L-asp = L-aspartic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, pz = pyrazine) membranes on a porous α-Al₂O₃ substrate with high performance and good stability by secondary growth. Through this strategy, the seed size reduction and screening engineering (SRSE) is proposed to obtain uniform sub-micron size MOF seeds by high-energy ball milling-combined solvent deposition. This strategy not only effectively addresses the issue of obtaining the uniform small seeds being significant for secondary growth but also provides an approach for the preparation of Ni-based pillar-layered MOF membranes where the freedom of synthesizing small crystals is lacking. Based on reticular chemistry, the pore size of Ni-LAB was narrowed by making use of shorter pillar ligands of pz instead of the longer pillar ligand of bpy. The prepared ultra-microporous Ni-LAP membranes exhibited a high H₂/CO₂ separation factor of 40.4 with H₂ permeance of 9.69 × 10^-8 mol m^-2 s^-1 Pa^-1 under ambient conditions and good mechanical and thermal stability. The superiority of the tunable pore structure and the remarkable stability of these MOF materials showed great potential for industrial H₂ purification. More importantly, our synthesis strategy demonstrated the generality for preparation of MOF membranes, enabling the regulation of membrane pore size and surface functional groups by reticular chemistry.

Construction of Fluorinated Propane-Trap in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Record Polymer-Grade Propylene Production under High Humidity Conditions

Propane/propene (C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ ) separation is essential in the petrochemical industry but challenging because of their similar physical and chemical properties. Adsorptive separation with C₃ H₈ -selective porous materials can energy-efficiently produce high-purity C₃ H₆ , which is highly promising for replacing conventional cryogenic distillation but suffers from unsatisfactory performance. Herein, through the precise incorporation of fluorinated functional groups into the confined pore space, a new fluorinated metal-organic framework (FDMOF-2) featuring the unique and strong C₃ H₈ -trap is successfully constructed. FDMOF-2 exhibits an unprecedented C₃ H₈ capture capacity of 140 cm³ cm^-3 and excellent C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ (1:1, v/v) selectivity up to 2.18 (298 K and 1 bar), thus setting new benchmarks for all reported porous materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the tailored pore confinement in FDMOF-2 provides stronger and multiple attractive interactions with C₃ H₈ , enabling excellent binding affinities. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that C₃ H₈ can be directly extracted from various C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ mixtures with FDMOF-2, affording an outstanding C₃ H₆ production (501 mmol L^-1 ) with over 99.99% purity. Benefiting from the robust framework and hydrophobic ligands, the separation performance of FDMOF-2 can be well maintained even under 70% relative humidity conditions.

How Effective are Metal Nanotherapeutic Platforms Against Bacterial Infections? A Comprehensive Review of Literature

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria has been deemed a global crisis that affects humans worldwide. Novel anti-infection strategies are desperately needed because of the limitations of conventional antibiotics. However, the increasing gap between clinical demand and antimicrobial treatment innovation, as well as the membrane permeability obstacle especially in gram-negative bacteria fearfully restrict the reformation of antibacterial strategy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the advantages of adjustable apertures, high drug-loading rates, tailorable structures, and superior biocompatibilities, enabling their utilization as drug delivery carriers in biotherapy applications. Additionally, the metal elements in MOFs are usually bactericidal. This article provides a review of the state-of-The-art design, the underlying antibacterial mechanisms and antibacterial applications of MOF- and MOF-based drug-loading materials. In addition, the existing problems and future perspectives of MOF- and MOF-based drug-loading materials are also discussed.

Ligand-Functional Groups Induced Tuning MOFs' 2D into 1D Pore Channels for Pipeline Natural Gas Purification

The solvothermal reactions of CoCl₂  ⋅ 6H₂ O, 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H₂ L) and isonicotinic acid (HL₁ )/3-amino isonicotinic acid (HL₂ )/3-chloro isonicotinic acid (HL₃ ) successfully led to three tfz-d topological pillar-layer [Co₄ (μ-F)₂ (COO)₆ (NC₅ H₄ )₄ ] cluster-based MOFs, namely, [Co₄ (μ-F)₂ (L)₂ (L₁ )₂  ⋅ 2DMA] ⋅ DMA ⋅ 2H₂ O (SNNU-Bai76, SNNU-Bai=Shaanxi Normal University Bai's group), [Co₄ (μ-F)₂ (L)₂ (L₂ )₂  ⋅ 2H₂ O] ⋅ 2DMA ⋅ 2H₂ O (SNNU-Bai77) and [Co₄ (μ-F)₂ (L)₂ (L₃ )₂  ⋅ 2H₂ O] ⋅ 2DMF ⋅ 2H₂ O (SNNU-Bai78). With the 2D pore channels in SNNU-Bai76 and SNNU-Bai77 being tuned to the 1D pore channel in SNNU-Bai78, C₃ H₈ and C₂ H₆ adsorption uptakes are apparently improved and the IAST selectivities of C₃ H₈ /CH₄ and C₂ H₆ /CH₄ almost remain, which indicate that SNNU-Bai78 may be one potential separation material for the pipeline natural gas purification. These were further confirmed by the breakthrough experiments for the simulated pipeline natural gas (C₃ H₈ /C₂ H₆ /CH₄  : 5/10/85 gas mixture) of three isostructural MOFs. Furthermore, GCMC simulations revealed that due to one of the pore channels blocked by Cl atoms in a couple of 3-chloro isonicotinic acid with the changed conformation as the pillar, the pore wall of the formed 1D pore channel in SNNU-Bai78 may interact with the adsorbed C₃ H₈ or C₂ H₆ molecule more strongly, for which more atoms of framework at the new adsorption site will interact with the adsorbed gas molecule by more intermolecular interactions. This was also evidenced by the increased binding energies, being consistent with the tuning of adsorption enthalpies for C₃ H₈ and C₂ H₆ gas molecules, and the reduced C₃ H₈ and C₂ H₆ gas diffusion coefficients in SNNU-Bai78. Very interestingly, this work is the first example of finely tuning the pore connectivity of MOFs toward strengthened host-guest interactions for the gas adsorption and separation.

MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2 for Efficient Separation of CH4 and C3H8 from Simulated Natural Gas

Adsorptive separation based on porous solid adsorbents has emerged as an excellent effective alternative to energy-intensive conventional separation methods in a low energy cost and high working capacity manner. However, there are few stable mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient purification of methane from other light hydrocarbons in natural gas. Herein, we report a series of stable mesoporous MOFs, MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2, for efficient separation of CH4 and C3H8 from a ternary mixture CH4/C2H6/C3H8. Experimental results show that all three MOFs possess excellent thermal, acid/basic, and hydrothermal stability. Single-component adsorption suggested that they have high C3H8 adsorption capacity and commendable selectivity for C3H8 and C2H6 over CH4. Transient breakthrough experiments further certified the ability of direct separation of CH4 from simulated natural gas and indirect recovery of C3H8 from the packing column. Theoretical calculations illustrated that the van der Waals force proportional to the molecular weight is the key factor and that the structural integrity and defect can impact separation performances.

Tunable Confined Aliphatic Pore Environment in Robust Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Separation of Gases with a Similar Structure

The fine-tuning of the pore structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is of critical importance to developing energy-efficient processes for the challenging separation of structurally similar molecules. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to realize a quasi-three-dimensional refinement of the pore structure that utilizes the tunability of ring size and number in polycycloalkane-dicarboxylate ligands. Two hydrolytically stable MOFs with a confined aliphatic pore environment, ZUL-C1 and ZUL-C2, were, for the first time, synthesized and applied in separating low-concentration C2-C3 hydrocarbons from natural gas and ultralow-concentration Xe from used nuclear fuel (UNF) off-gas. Validated by X-ray diffraction and modeling, an expansion of the polycycloalkane moiety enables sub-angstrom contraction in specific directions and forms a pore surface with more alkyl sites, which affords stronger trapping of guest molecules with relatively higher polarizability. The resultant material exhibits record C₂H₆/CH₄ and C₃H₈/CH₄ selectivities coupled with a benchmark low-pressure C₂H₆ capacity in alkane mixture separation and also a benchmark Xe capacity at extremely diluted feed concentration and record Kr productivity for the Xe/Kr (20:80, v/v) mixture in Xe/Kr separation.

Enhancing CH4 Capture from Coalbed Methane through Tuning van der Waals Affinity within Isoreticular Al-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Efficient separation of the CH₄/N₂ mixture is of great significance for coalbed methane purification. It is an effective strategy to separate this mixture by tuning the van der Waals interaction due to the nonpolar properties of CH₄ and N₂ molecules. Herein, we prepared several isoreticular Al-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different ligand sizes and polarities because of their high structural stability and low cost/toxicity feature of Al metal. Adsorption experiments indicated that the CH₄ uptake, Q_st of CH₄, and CH₄/N₂ selectivity are in the order of Al-FUM-Me (27.19 cm³(STP) g^-1, 24.06 kJ mol^-1 and 8.6) > Al-FUM (20.44 cm³(STP) g^-1, 20.60 kJ mol^-1 and 5.1) > Al-BDC (15.98 cm³(STP) g^-1, 18.81 kJ mol^-1 and 3.4) > Al-NDC (10.86 cm³(STP) g^-1, 14.89 kJ mol^-1 and 3.1) > Al-BPDC (5.90 cm³(STP) g^-1, 11.75 kJ mol^-1 and 2.2), confirming the synergetic effects of pore sizes and pore surface polarities. Exhilaratingly, the ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity of Al-FUM-Me is higher than those of all zeolites, carbon materials, and most water-stable MOF materials (except Al-CDC and Co₃(C₄O₄)₂(OH)₂), which is comparable to MIL-160. Breakthrough results demonstrate its excellent separation performance for the CH₄/N₂ mixture with good regenerability. The separation mechanism of Al-FUM-Me for the CH₄/N₂ mixture was elucidated by theoretical calculations, showing that the stronger affinity of CH₄ can be attributed to its relatively shorter interaction distance with adsorption binding sites. Therefore, this work not only offers a promising candidate for CH₄/N₂ separation but also provides valuable guidance for the design of high-performance adsorbents.

Robust Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Efficient Methane Purification and Capture

Developing energy-efficient alternatives for methane (CH₄) purification from natural gas and methane capture of coal-mine gas is of great significance and challenge in the chemical industry. Herein, we report a robust nickel-based metal-organic framework (MOF), Ni-BPZ, featuring one-dimensional (1D) rhombic channels decorated with abundant pyrazole rings. Ni-BPZ exhibits excellent separation performance toward both C₂H₆/CH₄ and CH₄/N₂ binary mixtures. The C₂H₆/CH₄ selectivity of Ni-BPZ is high, up to 50.2, exceeding those of most MOF adsorbents reported, and it simultaneously possesses a remarkable C₂H₆ uptake of 2.46 mmol/g at 298 K and 0.1 bar. The CH₄/N₂ selectivity of Ni-BPZ reaches 6.6, and its high CH₄ uptake is 1.56 mmol/g, which is also superior to most high-performance CH₄ adsorbents. The molecular simulation reveals that the uniform 1D rhombic channels with abundant pyrazole rings provide a high density of potential adsorption sites for efficient C₂H₆/CH₄ and CH₄/N₂ separations.

A novel trigonal bipyramidal cage-based Zn(ii)-MOF featuring two types of trinuclear clusters with high gas sorption properties

A unique trigonal bipyramidal cage-based Zn(ii)-MOF built from a linear trinuclear pin-wheel cluster and a triangular trinuclear cluster was prepared and shows a moderate gas adsorption amounts and high selectivities towards C2Hn/CH4 and C2H2/CO2.

Investigation on a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF-801) for the high-performance separation of light alkanes

A Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF-801) with high thermal and chemical stability was prepared by the solvothermal synthesis method. Notably, MOF-801 exhibits a high separation selectivity for C₃H₈/CH₄ and C₂H₆/CH₄, making it a practical material for the storage and purification of light alkanes.

Formation of a N/O/F-Rich and Rooflike Cluster-Based Highly Stable Cu(I/II)-MOF for Promising Pipeline Natural Gas Upgrading by the Recovery of Individual C3H8 and C2H6 Gases

Due to the ultralow amounts of C₃H₈ and C₂H₆ gases, to design and synthesize water-stable MOFs that are promising for real-world efficient pipeline natural gas (NG) upgrading by the recovery of individual C₃H₈ and C₂H₆ gases is still a great challenge. Here, a N/O/F heteroatom-rich and rooflike [Cu(II)₄Cu(I)₂(COO)₄(tetrazolyl)₆] cluster-based ultra-microporous tsi-MOF (SNNU-Bai68) was afforded as a multiple heteroatom-rich and curved-surface-shaped cluster-based ultra-microporous MOF and the first porous MOF based upon such rooflike [Cu(II)_xCu(I)_y(tetrazolyl)_z]^(2x+y-z)+ cluster. In SNNU-Bai68, the rooflike cluster was further assembled into a 1D chain secondary building block (SBB), which led to a high density of accessible potential adsorptive sites. Very interestingly, it exhibited the most promising balance of high gas adsorption uptakes at 0.01, 0.03, and 0.05 bar, high C₃H₈/CH₄, C₃H₈/C₂H₆, and C₂H₆/CH₄ adsorption selectivities, moderate adsorption enthalpies, and high water and chemical stability for pipeline natural gas upgrading by the recovery of individual C₃H₈ and C₂H₆ gases, which was further confirmed by the breakthrough experiments of the gas mixtures with/without 74% RH. Furthermore, the SC-XRD and GCMC studies revealed that the successful separation of C₃H₈, C₂H₆, and CH₄ gases in SNNU-Bai68 is due to different synergistic effects of H-bonds between the frameworks at three adsorptive sites around each rooflike cluster and those different gas molecules, which were initially described systematically by the number of H atoms from the gas molecules, the total number of H-bonds within the synergistic H-bonds, and the binding energy of the framework at an adsorption site toward the gas molecules. In addition, this work may provide a method for the construction of a multiple heteroatom-rich and curved-surface-shaped cluster-based ultra-microporous MOF as a novel approach to build MOFs with polar pore surfaces, suitable pore sizes, and unique pore shapes to maximize the synergistic H-bonds between the framework and guests.

Flexible Microporous Copper(II) Metal-Organic Framework toward the Storage and Separation of C1-C3 Hydrocarbons in Natural Gas

A flexible and robust microporous copper(II) metal-organic framework (MOF) based on a methyl-functionalized ligand, namely, [Cu₃(μ₃-OH)₂(L)₂(DMF)] (LIFM-ZZ-1; L = 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), was constructed. Its sorption performance for the separation of CH₄, C₂H₆, and C₃H₈ was investigated. LIFM-ZZ-1 showed a breathing behavior that led to a transition between large- and narrow-pore states. The sample also showed outstanding water stability. Gas adsorption experiments revealed that desolvated LIFM-ZZ-1 exhibited higher adsorption capacities for C₂H₆ and C₃H₈ (2.80 and 4.06 mmol·g^-1) than for CH₄ (0.39 mmol·g^-1) at 298 K and 1 bar. Breakthrough experiments showed that a CH₄/C₂H₆/C₃H₈ mixture was completely separated at 298 K, demonstrating the promising potential applications of this material for separating low contents of C2/C3 hydrocarbons from natural gas.
