Metal-Organic Framework HKUST-1 Promotes Methane Hydrate Formation for Improved Gas Storage Capacity

MOF-818 nanoparticles as radical scavengers to improve the aging resistance of silk fabric

Silk fabrics hold immense historical value as precious legacies left by our ancestors, yet they face significant damage during archaeological excavations, necessitating urgent protective measures. However, The current protective materials can't effectively prevent the degradation of silk fabrics. Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising avenue for the consolidation and preservation of silk fabrics, offering novel concepts and materials. In this study, we propose an innovative and cost-effective method that uses the MOF-818 with a radical scavenging ability to enhance the protection of silk fabrics. The resulting demonstrates that the MOF-818 was the large surface area and porous properties, which exhibited excellent superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity at 10 ug/mL. The silk fabrics treated by MOF-818 displays small color difference, reduced the oxidation of functional group and prevents the degradation of silk fabrics. The successful development of this nanocomposite marks a significant advancement in silk protection, opening new horizons for the preservation of silk cultural relics.

Labeled sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor based on Ti3C2Tx/AuNP and Ti3C2Tx/HKUST-1/TB composites for early liver cancer detection

A novel sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of the liver cancer marker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in human serum is proposed. The two-dimensional MXene material Ti3C2Tx was first prepared using etching and ultrasonic stripping, and then Ti3C2Tx was used to reduce chloroauric acid to form Ti3C2Tx/AuNP composites which were modified on the surface of the glassy carbon electrodes to form probe-type sensors. The Ti3C2Tx/AuNPs provide a large number of binding sites for the AFP capture antibody (Ab1) and increase the electrochemical reaction active site. The Ti3C2Tx/copper metal-organic frameworks HKUST-1 composite was also prepared by solvothermal method and combined with toluidine blue (TB) and AFP detection antibody (Ab2) to form a labeled sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor. The sensor achieved trace detection of AFP from 0.1 to 100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.073 pg/mL and possesses good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. The sensor performs well in clinical samples and has good potential for clinical applications.

Understanding the effect of moderate concentration SDS on CO2 hydrates growth in the presence of THF

Hypothesis Additives like Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and Sodium Dodecylsulfate (SDS) improve Carbon Dioxide (CO2) hydrates thermal stability and growth rate when used separately. It has been hypothesised that combining them could improve the kinetics of growth and the thermodynamic stability of CO2 hydrates. Simulations and Experiments We exploit atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the combined impact of THF and SDS under different temperatures and concentrations. The simulation insights are verified experimentally using pendant drop tensiometry conducted at ambient pressures and high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry. Findings Our simulations revealed that the combination of both additives is synergistic at low temperatures but antagonistic at temperatures above 274.1 K due to the aggregation of SDS molecules induced by THF molecules. These aggregates effectively remove THF and CO2 from the hydrate-liquid interface, thereby reducing the driving force for hydrates growth. Experiments revealed that the critical micelle concentration of SDS in water decreases by 20% upon the addition of THF. Further experiments in the presence of THF showed that only small amounts of SDS are sufficient to increase the CO2 storage efficiency by over 40% compared to results obtained without promoters. Overall, our results provide microscopic insights into the mechanisms of THF and SDS promoters on CO2 hydrates, useful for determining the optimal conditions for hydrate growth.

Application of metal-organic frameworks-based functional composite scaffolds in tissue engineering

With the rapid development of materials science and tissue engineering, a variety of biomaterials have been used to construct tissue engineering scaffolds. Due to the performance limitations of single materials, functional composite biomaterials have attracted great attention as tools to improve the effectiveness of biological scaffolds for tissue repair. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great promise for application in tissue engineering because of their high specific surface area, high porosity, high biocompatibility, appropriate environmental sensitivities and other advantages. This review introduces methods for the construction of MOFs-based functional composite scaffolds and describes the specific functions and mechanisms of MOFs in repairing damaged tissue. The latest MOFs-based functional composites and their applications in different tissues are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of using MOFs-based composites in tissue engineering are summarized. The aim of this review is to show the great potential of MOFs-based functional composite materials in the field of tissue engineering and to stimulate further innovation in this promising area.

Methane hydrate efficient formation in a 3D-rGO/SDBS composite

The optimization of storage space and material composition can significantly improve the generation rate and storage capacity of methane hydrate, which is important for the industrial application of solidified natural gas (SNG) technology. In our report, the effects of the presence of SDBS (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate), GO (graphene oxide), 3D-rGO (3D-reduced graphene oxide) and 3D-rGO/SDBS (3D-reduced graphene oxide/sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) on the methane hydrate generation process are investigated. The results show that the heterogeneous effect on the solid-phase surface of 3D-rGO/SDBS and its interconnected three-dimensional (3D) structure can achieve rapid nucleation. In addition, the presence of 3D-rGO/SDBS can increase the dissolution and dispersion of gas in solution and further enhance the gas-liquid mass transfer, thus realizing efficient methane storage. The maximum methane storage capacity of 188 v/vw is obtained with 600 ppm of 3D-rGO/SDBS in water, reaching 87% of the theoretical maximum storage capacity. The addition of 3D-rGO/SDBS also significantly reduces the induction time and accelerates the formation rate of methane hydrate. This study reveals that 3D graphene materials have excellent kinetic promotion effects on methane hydrate formation, explores and enriches the hydrate-promoting mechanism, and provides essential data and theoretical basis for the research of new promoters in the field of SNG technology.

One-Dimensional HKUST-1-Decorated Glassy Carbon Electrode for the Sensitive Electrochemical Immunosensor of NS1 Dengue Virus Serotype-3

In this work, simple and sensitive detection of dengue virus serotype-3 (DENV-3) antigen was accomplished by a one-dimensional (1D) HKUST-1-functionalized electrochemical sensor. 1D HKUST-1 was synthesized via a coprecipitation method using triethanolamine (TEOA) as pH modulator and structure-directing agent. The structure, morphology, and sensing performance of the HKUST-1-decorated carbon electrode were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). We found that 40 wt% TEOA transforms the octahedron HKUST-1 to the nanorods while maintaining its crystal structure and providing chemical stability. The 1D HKUST-1-decorated carbon electrode successfully detects the antigen in the range of 0.001-10 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.932 pg/mL. The immunosensor also exhibits remarkable performance in analyzing the antigen in human serum and showed recovery as high as ∼98% with excellent selectivity and reproducibility.

Enhanced Gas Adsorption in HKUST-1@Chitosan Aerogels, Cryogels, and Xerogels: An Evaluation Study

This study investigates the use of chitosan hydrogel microspheres as a template for growing an extended network of MOF-type HKUST-1. Different drying methods (supercritical CO2, freeze-drying, and vacuum drying) were used to generate three-dimensional polysaccharide nanofibrils embedding MOF nanoclusters. The resulting HKUST-1@Chitosan beads exhibit uniform and stable loadings of HKUST-1 and were used for the adsorption of CO2, CH4, Xe, and Kr. The maximum adsorption capacity of CO2 was found to be 1.98 mmol·g-1 at 298 K and 1 bar, which is significantly higher than those of most MOF-based composite materials. Based on Henry's constants, thus-prepared HKUST-1@CS beads also exhibit fair selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and Xe over Kr, making them promising candidates for capture and separation applications.

Hydrogen Adsorption in Ultramicroporous Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring Silent Open Metal Sites

In this study, we utilized an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework (MOF) named [Ni3(pzdc)2(ade)2(H2O)4]·2.18H2O (where H3pzdc represents pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid and ade represents adenine) for hydrogen (H2) adsorption. Upon activation, [Ni3(pzdc)2(ade)2] was obtained, and in situ carbon monoxide loading by transmission infrared spectroscopy revealed the generation of open Ni(II) sites. The MOF displayed a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 160 m2/g and a pore size of 0.67 nm. Hydrogen adsorption measurements conducted on this MOF at 77 K showed a steep increase in uptake (up to 1.93 mmol/g at 0.04 bar) at low pressure, reaching a H2 uptake saturation at 2.11 mmol/g at ∼0.15 bar. The affinity of this MOF for H2 was determined to be 9.7 ± 1.0 kJ/mol. In situ H2 loading experiments supported by molecular simulations confirmed that H2 does not bind to the open Ni(II) sites of [Ni3(pzdc)2(ade)2], and the high affinity of the MOF for H2 is attributed to the interplay of pore size, shape, and functionality.

Enabling hydrate-based methane storage under mild operating conditions by periodic mesoporous organosilica nanotubes

Biomethane is a renewable natural gas substitute produced from biogas. Storage of this sustainable energy vector in confined clathrate hydrates, encapsulated in the pores of a host material, is a highly promising avenue to improve storage capacity and energy efficiency. Herein, a new type of periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanotubes, referred to as hollow ring PMO (HR-PMO), capable of promoting methane clathrate hydrate formation under mild working conditions (273 K, 3.5 MPa) and at high water loading (5.1 g water/g HR-PMO) is reported. Gravimetric uptake measurements reveal a steep single-stepped isotherm and a noticeably high methane storage capacity (0.55 g methane/g HR-PMO; 0.11 g methane/g water at 3.5 MPa). The large working capacity throughout consecutive pressure-induced clathrate hydrate formation-dissociation cycles demonstrates the material's excellent recyclability (97% preservation of capacity). Supported by ex situ cryo-electron tomography and x-ray diffraction, HR-PMO nanotubes are hypothesized to promote clathrate hydrate nucleation and growth by distribution and confinement of water in the mesopores of their outer wall, along the central channels of the nanotubes and on the external nanotube surface. These findings showcase the potential for application of organosilica materials with hierarchical and interconnected pore systems for pressure-based storage of biomethane in confined clathrate hydrates.

Three-Dimensional-Printed Polymeric Cores for Methane Hydrate Enhanced Growth

Polymeric models of the core prepared with a Raise3D Pro2 3D printer were employed for methane hydrate formation. Polylactic acid (PLA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), carbon fiber reinforced polyamide-6 (UltraX), thermoplastic polyurethane (PolyFlex), and polycarbonate (ePC) were used for printing. Each plastic core was rescanned using X-ray tomography to identify the effective porosity volumes. It was revealed that the polymer type matters in enhancing methane hydrate formation. All polymer cores except PolyFlex promoted the hydrate growth (up to complete water-to-hydrate conversion with PLA core). At the same time, changing the filling degree of the porous volume with water from partial to complete decreased the efficiency of hydrate growth by two times. Nevertheless, the polymer type variation allowed three main features: (1) managing the hydrate growth direction via water or gas preferential transfer through the effective porosity; (2) the blowing of hydrate crystals into the volume of water; and (3) the growth of hydrate arrays from the steel walls of the cell towards the polymer core due to defects in the hydrate crust, providing an additional contact between water and gas. These features are probably controlled by the hydrophobicity of the pore surface. The proper filament selection allows the hydrate formation mode to be set for specific process requirements.

Quinoid-Based Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Fe2(dhbq)3: Porosity, Electrical Conductivity, and Solid-State Redox Properties

We report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic properties of the quinoid-based three-dimensional metal-organic framework [Fe₂(dhbq)₃]. The MOF was synthesized without using cations as a template, unlike other reported X₂dhbq₃-based coordination polymers, and the crystal structure was determined by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure was entirely different from the other reported [Fe₂(X₂dhbq₃)]^2-; three independent 3D polymers were interpenetrated to give the overall structure. The absence of cations led to a microporous structure, investigated by N₂ adsorption isotherms. Temperature dependence of electrical conductivity data revealed that it exhibited a relatively high electrical conductivity of 1.2 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 (E_a = 212 meV) due to extended d-π conjugation in a three-dimensional network. Thermoelectromotive force measurement revealed that it is an n-type semiconductor with electrons as the majority of charge carriers. Structural characterization and spectroscopic analyses, including SXRD, Mössbauer, UV-vis-NIR, IR, and XANES measurements, evidenced the occurrence of no mixed valency based on the metal and the ligand. [Fe₂(dhbq)₃] upon incorporating as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries engendered an initial discharge capacity of 322 mAh/g.

Challenges and opportunities for SERS in the infrared: materials and methods

In the wake of a global, heightened interest towards biomarker and disease detection prompted by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) positions itself again at the forefront of biosensing innovation. But is it ready to move from the laboratory to the clinic? This review presents the challenges associated with the application of SERS to the biomedical field, and thus, to the use of excitation sources in the near infrared, where biological windows allow for cell and through-tissue measurements. Two main tackling strategies will be discussed: (1) acting on the design of the enhancing substrate, which includes manipulation of nanoparticle shape, material, and supramolecular architecture, and (2) acting on the spectral collection set-up. A final perspective highlights the upcoming scientific and technological bets that need to be won in order for SERS to stably transition from benchtop to bedside.

A Review of the Effect of Porous Media on Gas Hydrate Formation

Most gas hydrates on the earth are in sediments and permafrost areas, and porous media are often used industrially as additives to improve gas hydrate formation. For further understanding its exploration and exploitation under natural conditions and its application in industry, it is necessary to study the effect of porous media on hydrate formation. The results show that the stacked porous media affects the phase equilibrium of hydrate formation depending on the competition water activity and large specific surface areas, while integrated porous media, such as metal foam, can transfer the hydration heat rapidly and moderate the hydrate phase equilibrium. A supersaturated metal-organic framework is able to significantly improve gas storage performance and can be used as a new material to promote hydrate formation. However, the critical particle size should be studied further for approaching the best promotion effect. In addition, together with the kinetic accelerators, porous media has a synergistic effect on gas hydrate formation. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the surface of porous media can stabilize hydrate crystals through hydrogen bonding. However, the hydroxyl radicals on the silica surface inhibit the combination of CH₄ and free water, making the phase equilibrium conditions more demanding.

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) Derived Materials Used in Zn-Air Battery

It is necessary to develop new energy technologies because of serious environmental problems. As one of the most promising electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, the Zn-air battery has attracted extensive research in recent years due to the advantages of abundant resources, low price, high energy density, and high reduction potential. However, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of Zn-air battery during discharge and charge have complicated multi-electron transfer processes with slow reaction kinetics. It is important to develop efficient and stable oxygen electrocatalysts. At present, single-function catalysts such as Pt/C, RuO₂, and IrO₂ are regarded as the benchmark catalysts for ORR and OER, respectively. However, the large-scale application of Zn-air battery is limited by the few sources of the precious metal catalysts, as well as their high costs, and poor long-term stability. Therefore, designing bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent activity and stability using resource-rich non-noble metals is the key to improving ORR/OER reaction kinetics and promoting the commercial application of the Zn-air battery. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is a kind of porous crystal material composed of metal ions/clusters connected by organic ligands, which has the characteristics of adjustable porosity, highly ordered pore structure, low crystal density, and large specific surface area. MOFs and their derivatives show remarkable performance in promoting oxygen reaction, and are a promising candidate material for oxygen electrocatalysts. Herein, this review summarizes the latest progress in advanced MOF-derived materials such as oxygen electrocatalysts in a Zn-air battery. Firstly, the composition and working principle of the Zn-air battery are introduced. Then, the related reaction mechanism of ORR/OER is briefly described. After that, the latest developments in ORR/OER electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries are introduced in detail from two aspects: (i) non-precious metal catalysts (NPMC) derived from MOF materials, including single transition metals and bimetallic catalysts with Co, Fe, Mn, Cu, etc.; (ii) metal-free catalysts derived from MOF materials, including heteroatom-doped MOF materials and MOF/graphene oxide (GO) composite materials. At the end of the paper, we also put forward the challenges and prospects of designing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with high activity and stability derived from MOF materials for Zn-air battery.

Magnetically Recyclable -SO3--Coated Nanoparticles Promote Gas Storage via Forming Hydrates

Efficient gas enrichment approaches are of great importance for the storage and transportation of clean energy and the sequestration of carbon dioxide. Of special interest is the regulated gas hydrate-based method; however, its operation requires adequate additives to overcome the low-storage capacity issue. Thus, this method is not economically feasible or environmentally friendly. In this work, a novel recyclable hydrate promoter of copolystyrene-sodium styrenesulfonate@Fe3O4 (PNS) nanoparticles with an integrated core-shell structure was synthesized through emulsion polymerization. This was found to effectively reduce the induction time of methane hydrate formation by one-third compared with the widely used sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS); the corresponding gas storage capacity was also comparable, up to 155 v/v. In addition, the PNS nanoparticles showed a good performance in foam inhibition upon hydrate decomposition, which frequently occurred with the use of SDS and other surfactant-based promoters. In particular, the new promoters contributed to a more than 30% increase in CO2 storage capacity, coacting with the fine sediments that mimic a marine environment. This provided further possibilities of sequestering CO2 in the form a gas hydrate under the seafloor. The underlying mechanism was proposed to involve anchored surfactants on the surface and tiny channels between the nanoparticles that lead to rapid hydrate nucleation and controlled growth. The results showed that the integrated magnetically recovering nanoparticles developed in this study could improve the efficiency of gas storage by forming gas hydrates; the excellent recycling performance paved the way for solving the economic and environmental problems encountered in additive usage.

Preparation of Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks via Slow Chemical Vapor Etching for CO2 Cycloaddition

Hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) are a class of promising functional material with micropores, mesopores, and/or macropores, which can address the issue of slow mass transfer and less exposed active sites for primitive microporous MOFs. Despite many attempts that have been achieved through a variety of techniques to date, there is still a myriad of spaces that urgently need to be exploited. In this work, we report the novel synthesis of HP-MOFs via slow chemical steam etching. The preparation process can be subtly achieved using water vapor as an etchant; meanwhile, the addition of ethanol into the vapor atmosphere is carried out because it can stabilize the MOF framework well with its hydrophobic alkane tails, thereby slowing the etching rate toward MOFs, successfully realizing the controllable etching manner of MOF components. Furthermore, the joint influence of the water content and etching temperature on the MOF backbone structure etched has thus been investigated in detail. Impressively, we can harvest desired HP-MOFs with the retained crystalline structure at a water content of 50% and an etching temperature of 120 °C. The resulting HK-120/50 product etched exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability in [2 + 3] cycloaddition of CO₂ than pristine MOF, which can be attributed to the more exposure of active sites and the acceleration of mass transportation across the entire MOF skeleton. Noteworthy, the strategy proposed in this study may be extended to other HP-MOF construction systems due to the lability of most MOFs toward the chemical water vapor.

Methane Hydrate Formation in Hollow ZIF-8 Nanoparticles for Improved Methane Storage Capacity

Methane hydrate has been extensively studied as a potential medium for natural gas storage and transportation. Due to their high specific surface area, tunable porous structure, and surface chemistry, metal–organic frameworks are ideal materials to exhibit the catalytic effect for the formation process of gas hydrate. In this paper, hollow ZIF-8 nanoparticles are synthesized using the hard template method. The synthesized hollow ZIF-8 nanoparticles are used in the adsorption and methane hydrate formation process. The effect of pre-adsorbed water mass in hollow ZIF-8 nanoparticles on methane storage capacity and the hydrate formation rate is investigated. The storage capacity of methane on wet, hollow ZIF-8 is augmented with an increase in the mass ratio of pre-adsorbed water and dry, hollow ZIF-8 (RW), and the maximum adsorption capacity of methane on hollow ZIF-8 with a RW of 1.2 can reach 20.72 mmol/g at 275 K and 8.57 MPa. With the decrease in RW, the wet, hollow ZIF-8 exhibits a shortened induction time and an accelerated growth rate. The formation of methane hydrate on hollow ZIF-8 is further demonstrated with the enthalpy of the generation reaction. This work provides a promising alternative material for methane storage.

Surface morphology effects on clathrate hydrate wettability

HYPOTHESIS

Clathrate hydrates preferentially form at interfaces; hence, wetting properties play an important role in their formation, growth, and agglomeration. Experimental evidence suggests that the hydrate preparation process can strongly affect contact angle measurements, leading to the different results reported in the literature. These differences hamper technological progress. We hypothesize that changes in hydrate surface morphologies are responsible for the wide variation of contact angles reported in the literature.

EXPERIMENTS

Experimental testing of our hypothesis is problematic due to the preparation history of hydrates on their surface properties, and the difficulties in advanced surface characterization. Thus, we employ molecular dynamics simulations, which allow us to systematically change the interfacial features and the system composition. Implementing advanced algorithms, we quantify fundamental thermodynamic properties to validate our observations.

FINDINGS

We achieve excellent agreement with experimental observations for both atomically smooth and rough hydrate surfaces. Our results suggest that contact line pinning forces, enhanced by surface heterogeneity, are accountable for altering water contact angles, thus explaining the differences among reported experimental data. Our analysis and molecular level insights help interpret adhesion force measurements and yield a better understanding of the agglomeration between hydrate particles, providing a microscopic tool for advancing flow assurance applications.

Multifunctional MgO/HKUST-1 Composite for Capture, Catalysis, and Cyclic Cataluminescence Detection of Esters All-In-One to Rapidly Identify Scented Products

The integration of metallic oxide and metal-organic frameworks has attracted considerable attention as obtained composite materials because they show synergistic effects in applications of catalysis and sensing. Herein, we developed the hybrid MgO and HKUST-1 for efficient capture, catalysis, and cyclic cataluminescence (CCTL) detection of esters all-in-one to rapidly identify scented products. The multifunctional MgO/HKUST-1 composite with high CCTL activity was synthesized and characterized. The multifunctional MgO/HKUST-1 composite acts as an enrichment material for ester capture and serves as a catalyst, assisting the analyte to trigger multistage signals. The multistage signals of ester-containing scented products also satisfy the exponential decay equation with a certain τ-value. The τ-values obtained by the CCTL system were applied to identify the brands of essential oils. The working temperature served as the sensor element to obtain various τ-values. The τ-values constituted a digital code to label the different brands of cigarettes with the same aroma type. The multistage signals could be used to distinguish the origin regions of essential oils and tobacco. This work combines the CCTL strategy with the sample pretreatment, opening up a new direction to develop CCL and providing a new platform to rapidly identify ester-containing scented products.

Convenient synthesis of zwitterionic calcium(II)-carboxylate metal organic frameworks with efficient activities for the treatment of osteoporosis

Calcium supplementation is effective in alleviating the process of osteoporosis and the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures for people with long-term calcium deficiency. Herein, five water-stable calcium carboxylate compounds, that is, mononuclear coordination compound [Ca(Cbdcp)(H₂O)₆]·0.5H₂O (1, H₃CbdcpBr = N-(4-carboxybenzyl)-(3,5-dicarboxyl)pyridinium bromide), and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Ca₃(Dcbdcp)₂(H₂O)₁₂]·2H₂O}_n (2, H₄DcbdcpBr = N-(3,5-dicarboxybenzyl)-(3,5-dicarboxyl)pyridinium bromide), {[Ca(Cmdcp)(H₂O)₄]·3H₂O}_n (3, H₃CmdcpBr = N-carboxymethyl-(3,5-dicarboxyl)pyridinium bromide), {[Ca(Cdcbp)]·2H₂O}_n (4, H₃CdcbpBr = 3-carboxyl-(3,5-dicarboxybenzyl)-pyridinium bromide) and {[Ca_0.5(Cmcp)]·2H₂O}_n (5, H₂CmcpBr = N-carboxymethyl-(3-carboxyl)pyridinium bromide), were synthesized from the reaction of CaCl₂ with five different kinds of zwitterionic carboxylate ligands in the presence of NaOH, respectively. Compounds 1-5 were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, elemental analyses, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Compound 1 features a mononuclear structure and MOF 2 with a one-dimensional (1D) structure while MOFs 3 and 5 with 2D layer structures and MOF 4 showing a 3D structure. Compounds 1-5 exhibited good water stability and possessed considerable biocompatibility with primary mice osteoblasts. The in vitro ability of compounds 1-5 in regulating osteoblastic differentiation was studied via alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, alizarin red S (ARS) staining, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Among these 5 compounds, MOF 4 showed the overall best in vitro osteogenic effects. Then, we administrated MOF 4 intragastrically to bilaterally ovariectomized mice for 8 weeks and found that bone loss caused by ovariectomy (OVX) was significantly alleviated. Besides, MOF 4 administration showed no toxic effects in the main organs of the mice. Altogether, zwitterionic carboxylate ligands-based calcium compounds provide a new strategy for calcium agents development.

From MOF-199 Microrods to CuO Nanoparticles for Room-Temperature Desulfurization: Regeneration and Repurposing Spent Adsorbents as Sustainable Approaches

MOF-199 is one of the well-studied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the capture of small gas molecules. In this study, we have investigated the thermal transformation of MOF-199 microrods to CuO nanoparticles by various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The growth of oxide was initiated by the formation of ∼2.5 nm particles at 200 °C, which ended up as CuO nanoparticles of ∼100-250 nm size at 550 °C. An intermediate presence of Cu2O along with CuO was recorded at 280 °C. The MOF and calcined products were tested for the room-temperature desulfurization process. MOF-199 showed the maximum adsorption capacity for H2S gas (77.1 mg g-1) among all adsorbents studied. Also, MOF-199 showed a better regeneration efficiency than the derived oxide. For a sustainable process, the exhausted adsorbents were used for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. The exhausted materials showed better degradation efficiencies than the fresh materials. This study reports new sustainable approaches for MOF-199 application in air and water decontamination.

Correlating Antiagglomerant Performance with Gas Hydrate Cohesion

Although inhibiting hydrate formation in hydrocarbon-water systems is paramount in preventing pipe blockage in hydrocarbon transport systems, the molecular mechanisms responsible for antiagglomerant (AA) performance are not completely understood. To better understand why macroscopic performance is affected by apparently small changes in the AA molecular structure, we perform molecular dynamics simulations. We quantify the cohesion energy between two gas hydrate nanoparticles dispersed in liquid hydrocarbons in the presence of different AAs, and we achieve excellent agreement against experimental data obtained at high pressure using the micromechanical force apparatus. This suggests that the proposed simulation approach could provide a screening method for predicting, in silico, the performance of new molecules designed to manage hydrates in flow assurance. Our results suggest that entropy and free energy of solvation of AAs, combined in some cases with the molecular orientation at hydrate-oil interfaces, are descriptors that could be used to predict performance, should the results presented here be reproduced for other systems as well. These insights could help speed up the design of new AAs and guide future experiments.

MXene (Ti3C2Tx) as a Promising Substrate for Methane Storage via Enhanced Gas Hydrate Formation

Methane hydrate (MH) makes it possible to store methane using the cheapest and safest solvent: water. However, the sluggish formation kinetics hinders its practical utilization. Recently, the use of nanomaterials has been suggested as a potential solution; however, there is still a lack of high-efficiency kinetic promotors, and the promoting mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrated that MXene dispersion is promising for the storage of methane via MH with rapid formation kinetics, high storage capacity, and impressive cyclic stability. MXene can significantly shorten the induction time for MH formation. The enhanced kinetics was achieved by providing extra nucleation sites and enhancing thermal conductivity, although the increased surface tension of MXene dispersion could impede the MH formation via limited mass transfer. We confirmed that the concentration-dependent promoting effect of MXene dispersions results from regulating the assembly of water molecules. The insight of this work can apply to develop high-efficiency additives to control the formation kinetics of MH.

Construction of MOF-shell porous materials and performance studies in the selective adsorption and separation of benzene pollutants

Metastable Cu2O is an attractive material for the architectural design of integrated nanomaterials. In this context, Cu2O was used as the sacrificial agent to form the core-shell structure of Cu2O@HKUST-1 by in situ growth technology. The MOFs with BOPs adsorption property were gathered together by a Cu2O etching method, and the hollow structure of the HKUST-1 shell material with fast BOP adsorption was successfully constructed. The adsorption experiments showed that the HKUST-1 shell has a good adsorption effect on nitrobenzene pollutants in wastewater. The investigation of various factors affecting the adsorption, thermodynamic and kinetic equations was carried out. The adsorption equilibrium was reached within 30 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 94.67 mg g-1 at 298 K. The adsorption capacity of nitrobenzene by the HKUST-1 shell is in good agreement with the Freundlich model and the second-order kinetic model. The possible mechanism of adsorption of nitrobenzene by the HKUST-1 shell was discussed. The experimental results suggested that Cu-BTC materials have potential applications for wastewater treatment involving benzene pollutants.
