Elaborate Design of Ag8Au10 Cluster [2]Catenane Phosphors for High-Efficiency Light-Emitting Devices

Aggregation-Induced Emission Phosphorescence Featured Au-Ag Coordination Polymer with a Diphosphine N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand for Highly Sensitive Detection of Cr(VI)

Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics have been recognized as highly selective and sensitive probes for the detection of toxic metal ions in recent years. In this paper, a Au-Ag cluster-based coordination polymer [Au3Ag3(L)2(CN)6(H2O)2]n [1, L = 1,3-bis((diphenylphosphanyl)methyl)-4,5-dihydro-imidazolylidene] was prepared by in situ generation of the diphosphine N-heterocyclic carbene (PCNHCP)-type ligand L in the presence of the corresponding metal salts. Compound 1 exhibited 530 nm phosphorescence under 380 nm excitation with a QY of 6.30% and a lifetime (τ) of 7.14 μs in the solid state. 1 showed good AIE behavior in the mixture of MeOH/H2O while the best aggregation state (fwater = 90%, QY = 6.79%, τ = 6.70 μs) exhibited selective and sensitive emission quenching toward Cr(VI) ions. Ultralow detection limits of 9.7 ppb (w/w) for Cr2O72- and 17.9 ppb (w/w) for CrO42- were achieved.

Efficient and bright broadband electroluminescence based on environment-friendly metal halide nanoclusters

Broadband electroluminescence based on environment-friendly emitters is promising for healthy lighting yet remains an unprecedented challenge to progress. The copper halide-based emitters are competitive candidates for broadband emission, but their high-performance electroluminescence shows inadequate broad emission bandwidth of less than 90 nm. Here, we demonstrate efficient ultra-broadband electroluminescence from a copper halide (CuI) nanocluster single emitter prepared by a one-step solution synthesis-deposition process, through dedicated design of ligands and subtle selection of solvents. The CuI nanocluster exhibits high rigidity in the excitation state as well as dual-emissive modes of phosphorescence and temperature-activated delayed fluorescence, enabling the uniform cluster-composed film to show excellent stability and high photoluminescent efficiency. In consequence, ultra-broadband light-emitting diodes (LEDs) present nearly identical performance in an inert or air atmosphere without encapsulation and outstanding high-temperature operation performance, reaching an emission full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~120 nm, a peak external quantum efficiency of 13%, a record maximum luminance of ~50,000 cd m-2, and an operating half-lifetime of 137 h at 100 cd m-2. The results highlight the potential of copper halide nanoclusters for next-generation healthy lighting.

Electroluminescent Clusters

Optoelectronic cluster materials emerge rapidly in recent years especially for light-emitting devices, owing to their 100 % exciton harvesting and unique organic-inorganic hybrid structures with tunable excited-state characteristics for thermally activated delayed fluorescence and/or phosphorescence and inheritable photo- and thermo-stability. However, for efficient electroluminescence, excited-state compositions of cluster emitters should be tuned through ligand engineering to enhance ligand-centered radiative components and reduce cluster-centered quenching states. Nonetheless, the balance of optoelectronic properties requires delicate and controllable ligand functionalization. On the other hand, in addition to balancing carrier fluxes, it showed that device engineering, especially host matrixes and interfacial optimization, can not only alleviate triplet quenching, but also modify processing and passivate defects. As consequence, the record external quantum efficiencies of cluster light-emitting diodes already reached ≈30 %. Herein, we overview recent progress of electroluminescent cluster materials and discuss their structure-property relationships, which would inspire the continuous efforts making cluster light-emitting diodes competent as the new generation of displays and lighting sources.

Bulk Passivation Enables Hundredfold-Enhanced Electroluminescence of Monophosphine Cu4 I4 Cubes

Electroluminescent (EL) clusters emerged rapidly, owing to their organic-inorganic hybrid character useful for comprehensive performance integration and the potential for large-scale display and lighting applications. However, despite their good photoluminescent (PL) properties, until present, no efficient EL monodentate ligand-based clusters were reported due to structural variation during processing and excitation and exciton confinement on cluster-centered quenching states. Here we demonstrate an effective bulky passivation strategy for efficient cluster light-emitting diodes with a monophosphine Cu4 I4 cube named [TMeOPP]4 Cu4 I4 . With terminal pyridine groups, an active matrix named TmPyPB supports an effective host-cluster interplay for configuration fixation, structural stabilization, and exciton-confinement optimization. Compared to common inactive hosts, the passivation effects of TmPyPB markedly reduce trap-state densities by 24-40 % to suppress nonradiative decay, resulting in state-of-the-art PL and EL quantum yields reaching 99 % and 15.6 %, respectively, which are significantly improved by about 7-fold. TmPyPB simultaneously increases EL luminance to 104 nits, which is ≈100-fold that of the non-doped analogue.

A Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Ag/P/S Complex Showing Solvochromic and Mechanochromic Photoluminescence

The reaction of CF₃COOAg, 3-bdppmapy (N,N-bis(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-3-aminopyridine) and HTZ (1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol) in CH₂Cl₂/MeOH resulted in a dinuclear Ag/P/S complex [Ag₂(TZ)₂(3-bdppmapy)₂]·xSol (1·xSol). Crystals of 1·xSol converted to 1·2MeOH in air at room temperature and further to 1 under vacuum upon heating. The solid-state, room-temperature photoluminescent emission of 1·xSol (510 nm) shifted to 494 nm (1·2MeOH) and 486 nm (1). Grinding solids of 1·2MeOH in air resulted in amorphous 1G characterized by solid-state emission at 468 nm, which converted to 1GR with 513 nm emission upon MeOH treatment. Grinding 1GR in air returned 1G, and this interconversion was reproducible over five cycles. The solid-state photoluminescence of 1G changed in response to vapors containing low-molecular weight alcohols but remained unchanged after exposure to other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or to water vapor. Test papers impregnated with 1G could detect methanol in vapors from aqueous solutions at concentrations above 50%. Complex 1G is, therefore, an example of a stimuli-responsive molecular sensor for the detection of alcohols.

Triple Ligand Engineered Gold Nanoclusters with Enhanced Fluorescence and Device Compatibility for Efficient Electroluminescence Light-Emitting Diodes

Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) are potential emitters for electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (EL-LEDs) but restricted by the limited photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and poor device compatibility. Herein, triple ligand engineered Au NCs enable the fabrication of Au NC-based LEDs with improved EL efficiency. Rigidified triple ligand shells greatly reduce the nonradiative transition and thus increase the PLQY of Au NCs from 2.1 to 73.4%. Most importantly, this strategy significantly improves the compatibility between Au NCs and charge transport materials in EL-LED fabrication. As a result, the EL-LEDs reach a maximum brightness of 1104 cd/m² and an external quantum efficiency of 5.1%, which is the highest recorded for any reported Au NC-based EL-LEDs.

Scissor-like Au4Cu2 Cluster with Phosphorescent Mechanochromism and Thermochromism

Reaction of [Au(tht)2](ClO4) (tht = tetrahydrothiophene), [Cu(CH3CN)4](ClO4), 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,8-diethynyl-9H-carbazole (H3decz), and bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether (POP) in the presence of triethylamine (NEt3) gave the cluster complex Au4Cu2(decz)2(POP)2 as yellow crystals. As revealed by X-ray crystallography, the Au4Cu2 cluster exhibits scissor-like structure sustained by two decz and two POP ligands and stabilized by Au-Cu and Au-Au interactions. The Au4Cu2 cluster shows bright yellow to orange photoluminescence upon irradiation at >300 nm, arising from 3[π (decz)→5d (Au)] 3LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) and 3[π→π* (decz)] 3IL (intraligand) triplet states as revealed by theoretical and computational studies. When it is mechanically ground, reversible phosphorescence conversion from yellow to red is observed owing to more compact molecular packing and thus stronger intermetallic interaction. Variable-temperature luminescence studies reveal that it displays distinct red-shifts of the emission whether the temperature is elevated or lowered from ambient temperature, suggestive of exceptional thermochromic phosphorescence characteristics.

Engineering Coinage Metal Nanoclusters for Electroluminescent Light-Emitting Diodes

Coinage metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are a new type of ultra-small nanoparticles on the sub-nanometer (typically < three nm) scale intermediate between atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles. At the same time, the ultra-small size and discrete energy levels of MNCs enable them to exhibit molecular-like energy gaps, and the total structure involving the metal core and surface ligand together leads to their unique properties. As a novel environmentally friendly chromophore, MNCs are promising candidates for the construction of electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, a systematic summary is urgently needed to correlate the properties of MNCs with their influences on electroluminescent LED applications, describe the synthetic strategies of highly luminescent MNCs for LEDs’ construction, and discuss the general influencing factors of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs. In this review, we first discuss relevant photoemissions of MNCs that may have major influences on the performance of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs, and then demonstrate the main synthetic strategies of highly luminescent MNCs. To this end, we illustrate the recent development of electroluminescent LEDs based on MNCs and present our perspectives on the opportunities and challenges, which may shed light on the design of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs in the near future.

Self-Assembly of Molecular Trefoil Knots Featuring Pentadecanuclear Homoleptic AuI -, AuI /AgI -, or AuI /CuI -Alkynyl Coordination

Metal-free and metal-containing molecular trefoil knots are fascinating ensembles that are usually covalently assembled, the latter requiring the rational design of di- or multidentate/multipodal ligands as connectors. In this work, we describe the self-assembly of pentadecanuclear Au^I trefoil knots [Au₁₅ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] from monoalkynes HC≡CR (R=9,9-X₂ -fluorenyl with X=nBu, n-hexyl) and [Au^I (THT)Cl]. Hetero-bimetallic counterparts [Au₉ M₆ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] (M=Cu/Ag) were self-assembled by reactions of [Au₁₅ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] with [Cu(MeCN)₄ ]⁺ /AgNO₃ and HC≡CR. The type of pentadecanuclear trefoil knots described herein is characterized by X-ray crystallography, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS. [Au₉ Cu₆ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] is relatively stable in hexane; its excited state properties were investigated. DFT calculations revealed that non-covalent metal-metal and metal-ligand interactions, together with longer alkyl chain-strengthened inter-ligand dispersion interactions, govern the stability of the trefoil knot structures.

Highly Phosphorescent Dimers of PtAu2 Complexes and the Use in Solution-Processed OLEDs

Two asymmetric PtAu2 complexes having HC≡CC6H4C≡CH (1,4-diethynylbenzene) or HC≡CCarbC≡CH (2,7-diethynyl-9-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)-9H-carbazole) and the corresponding bis(acetylide)-linked Pt2Au4 complexes are prepared and characterized. The structures of PtAu2 complexes 1 and 3 together with Pt2Au4 complex 2 are determined by X-ray crystallography. Relative to PtAu2 complexes, bis(acetylide)-linked Pt2Au4 complexes not only display a distinct red shift of the emission but also provide a much higher phosphorescent efficiency. Utilizing highly emissive Pt2Au4 complexes as phosphorescent dopants, high-efficiency solution-processed OLEDs are obtained with peak current efficiency of 75.9 cd A-1 and external quantum efficiency of 19.0% at luminance of 336 cd m-2 and voltage of 5.2 V. When two PtAu2 moieties are linked by a bis(acetylide) ligand, the corresponding Pt2Au4 complexes show a much improved electroluminescent performance compared with that of asymmetric PtAu2 complexes.

Overcoming Efficiency Limitation of Cluster Light-Emitting Diodes with Asymmetrically Functionalized Biphosphine Cu4I4 Cubes

Electroluminescent (EL) nanoclusters holding promise for new-generation cluster light-emitting devices (CLEDs) rapidly emerge. However, slow radiation and serious quenching of cluster emitters largely limit the device performance. Herein, we report two monofunctionalized biphosphine chelated Cu₄I₄ clusters [DMACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄ and [DPACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄. The asymmetric modification and electron-donating effect of acridine groups lead to the iodine-to-ligand charge transfer predominant excited states of the clusters, which feature thermally activated delayed fluorescence with markedly improved singlet radiative rate constants and reduced triplet nonradiative rate constants. As consequence, compared to the nonfunctionalized parent cluster, [DPACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄ achieves 16-fold increased photoluminescence (81%) and 20-fold increased EL (19.5%) quantum efficiencies. Such new-record efficiencies make CLEDs achieve the state-of-the-art performance of all kinds of EL technologies.

Heteroctanuclear Au4Ag4 Cluster Complexes of 4,5-Diethynylacridin-9-One with Luminescent Mechanochromism

Two heteroctanuclear Au₄Ag₄ cluster complexes of 4,5-diethynylacridin-9-one (H₂L) were prepared through the self-assembly reactions of [Au(tht)₂](CF₃SO₃), Ag(tht)(CF₃SO₃), H₂L and PPh₃ or PPh₂Py (2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine). The Au₄Ag₄ cluster consists of a [Au₄L₄]^4- and four [Ag(PPh₃)]⁺ or [Ag(PPh₂Py)]⁺ units with Au₄L₄ framework exhibiting a twisted paper clip structure. In CH₂Cl₂ solutions at ambient temperature, both compounds show ligand fluorescence at ca. 463 nm as well as phosphorescence at 650 nm for 1 and 630 nm for 2 resulting from admixture of ³IL (intraligand) of L ligand, ³LMCT (from L ligand to Au₄Ag₄) and ³MC (metal-cluster) triplet states. Crystals or crystalline powders manifest bright yellow-green phosphorescence with vibronic-structured emission bands at 530 (568sh) nm for complex 1 and 536 (576sh) nm for complex 2. Upon mechanical grinding, yellow-green emission in the crystalline state is dramatically converted to red luminescence centered at ca. 610 nm with a drastic redshift of the emission after crystal packing is destroyed.

A Photoluminescent Ag10 Cu6 Cluster Stablized by a PNNP Ligand and Phenylacetylides Selectively and Reversibly Senses Ammonia in Air and Water

A photoluminescent bimetallic cluster [Ag₁₀ Cu₆ (bdppthi)₂ (C≡CPh)₁₂ (MeOH)₂ (H₂ O)](ClO₄ )₄ (1, bdppthi=N,N'-bis(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-tetrahydroimidazole} was synthesized from the PNNP type ligand bdppthi generated in-situ. Upon excitation at 365 nm, 1 exhibited strong phosphorescent emission at 630 nm, which was selectively quenched by NH₃ in air or water. The sensing of NH₃ was rapid and recoverable, with detection limits of 53 ppm (v/v) in N₂ and 21 μmol/L (0.36 ppm, w/w) for NH₃  ⋅ H₂ O in water. Cluster 1 could potentially serve as a bifunctional chemical sensor for the efficient detection of ammonia in waste-gas and waste-water.

Keep it tight: a crucial role of bridging phosphine ligands in the design and optical properties of multinuclear coinage metal complexes

Copper subgroup metal ions in the +1 oxidation state are classical candidates for aggregation via non-covalent metal-metal interactions, which are supported by a number of bridging ligands. The bridging phosphines, soft donors with a relatively labile coordination to coinage metals, serve as convenient and essential components of the ligand environment that allow for efficient self-assembly of discrete polynuclear aggregates. Simultaneously, accessible and rich modification of the organic spacer of such P-donors has been used to generate many fascinating structures with attractive photoluminescent behavior. In this work we consider the development of di- and polynuclear complexes of M(i) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) and their photophysical properties, focusing on the effect of phosphine bridging ligands, their flexibility and denticity.
